First PersonAs TOLD To KEVIN ZIMMERMAN

Tim DuBoisOn Growing But Not Too Fast

Arista/Nashville president TimDuBois started at the top, and hasstayed there. Prior to being chosenby Arista president Clive Davis tolaunch Arista's country division in1989, DuBois had no record compa-ny experience, instead making aname for himself as a manager, songwriter and producer.

He has built a roster that yields ahigher percentage of gold- and plat-inum -selling acts than any of hiscompetitors. Arista/Nashville nowaccounts for about 20% of Arista'soverall sales volume; the total com-pany recently completed its best -everfiscal year, with US sales exceeding$300 million.

Here DuBois explains how he'smade it work.

Icame from the production/songwriter/managing side of thebusiness. All my relationships

had been from the other side of thedesk. I've become very sensitive tothe artists' perspective. When theopportunity arose to runArista/Nashville, I wanted to build acompany that was music -driven,instead of marketing -driven, andone that was very artist -friendly.

What I didn't want to do was tobe guilty of over -hyping somethingthat I didn't personally feel a pas-sion for, and trying to sell it throughhype.

Partly because of that, we haveonly signed 15 artists betweenArista/Nashville and our secondcountry label, Career Records. Wedon't move real fast; we like to waituntil we really believe in somethingand then put all our efforts behindthat. My philosophy has alwaysbeen to take some well-chosen

first Words

shotswith awhole lotof mus-cle.

Thecountryside ofthe busi-ness isvery dif-ferentfrom

Tim DuBois most ofthe other genres, where you usuallyput out an album, work four or fivesingles, and then wait three yearsuntil the next album comes out. Thegood side of country music from aplanning viewpoint is that when thelast notes of that fourth or fifth sin-gle are just starting to fade away, you've got a new single and a newalbum, so it creates more of a con-stant flow. The downside of that isthat you can only work a certainnumber of acts without starting tocompete with yourself. You canalways hire more people to workon those artists, but you can't buymore weeks in the year.

So we decided that building sepa-rate promotional staffs who hadtheir own priorities and their owncalendars to fill was the best wayfor us to grow, and that led toCareer Records. The philosophy hasalways been to build another labelunder the Arista umbrella, and con-tinue to pick carefully which artiststo work with. This way these sepa-rate labels can develop their ownrelationships with radio to best ben-efit the artists and keep the qualityof music high.

We've also started Arista Texas, whose initial area of growth hasbeen in Hispanic music, particularlyTejano music. We're also interestedin other things that are uniquelyTexan.

All three of these labels werestarted from scratch. Now we're alsoinvolved with the contemporaryChristian label Reunion, which hasbeen a very good fit for us. It's asmall company with a tremendousemphasis on the music and theartists.

Despite all of this activity, I don'twant to build an empire, By that Imean that I don't want my employ-ees to be hanging around hopingone of us will die in order to moveforward in the organization. [SeniorVP of sales and marketing) MikeDungan and [VP, promotion andartist development] Jack Weston arevery supportive executives whounderstand our need to grow, andgrow carefully. Each step we'vetaken has been very calculated, tomake sure we maintain the samelevels of integrity.

We're not about being the biggestrecord company. But we do wantto be the best record company, tomake the best possible music andrepresent some unique artists.

The struggle we have now is tomaintain that small, family -typespirit we have, where everybodyhas the ability to affect what's hap-pening. As we grow, it takes atremendous amount of effort tokeep that spirit alive. It's a realchallenge. I'd say it's the biggestpriority for Mike and Jack andme-to grow without destroyingthat integrity. GAVIN

We feel we are on a hot streak right now and if GAVIN is anygauge, business generally is very healthy. Tim DuBois knowsall about hot streaks, having engineered several of his own outof Arista Nashville. But forget Nashville, DuBois is one of themusic industry's brightest and clearest thinkers, applying ana-lytical skills honed in his financial career before he ever gotcaught up in the music business. He would do well runningalmost any business but clearly enjoys working with talented, creative people who have a message to convey.

It's all very well having the message. It's altogether anotherchallenge to get that message across to the right people in apositive fashion. That's where the seasoned practitioners ofpromotion come into their own. They have the connections, thecharisma and the chutzpah. Even more important, they have

GAVIN SEPTEMBER 29, 1995

the telephone. And while sensitive artistsmay not enjoy rejection, hard-bitten promo-tion folk absorb it close-up the way JerryRice takes tackles. To them, the word "No"is simply a delayed acceptance of theinevitable. The best in the business spreada positive message, break records and help build careers.GAVIN is delighted to applaud those hardworking professionalsin a focus starting on page 11. And if you have been omitted, don't take it as a rejection. Think of it simply as a delayedacceptance of an inevitable inclusion in a future issue.

Infinity ForBY BEVERLY MIRE

We were right.Last week, GAVIN reported that

Infinity chief Mel Karmazin had$1 billion worth of credit burninga hole in his pocket, and we won-dered what he was going to dowith it. He answered by plunkingdown an estimated $275 million topurchase the Walnut Creek, Calif. -based Alliance Broadcasting.

Alliance parted with seven sta-tions, including KFRC/AM&FM andKYCY/FM-San Francisco. Other sta-tions are located in Dallas(KYNG/FM and KSNN/FM), Detroit(WYCD/FM), and Seattle(KYCW/FM). Except for oldiesKFRC and mainstream countryKSNN, all the stations are formatted

ms New Alliance"young country."

While Karmazin declined to com-ment on the sale, Alliance CEO JohnHayes predicted little change in for-

mats or employee status. "TheInfinity business plan is to buyongoing concerns and enhancethem," he said. "Based on what Iknow about Infinity, the only reasonany station employee wouldn't stayis if that employee chooses not to."

Before the sale, which is subject toFCC approval, Infinity owns a totalof 17 FM and 10 AM stations. Thetotal of Alliance stations would putInfinity over the current ownership

Warner SellsInterscope StakeWarner Bros. long-awaited divesti-ture of its stake in Interscope camebecame official on Wednesday(September 27) and contrary torumors, the lucrative label landed inthe hands of its founders, Ted Fieldand Jimmy lovine.

Warner Bros. has been anxious tosell the label since earlier this yearwhen it was attacked by presidentialhopeful Bob Dole, former educationsecretary William Bennett and activistC. Delores Tucker for its associationwith Interscope. Dole saidInterscope markets evil throughcommerce.

"If music is being distributed in our

name, we will bear the responsibilityfor that music," said Warner Musicchairman/CEO Michael Fuchs. "Thenature of our agreement withInterscope precluded us from anymeaningful involvement or discussionregarding Interscope's music. Wetherefore decided, in conjunction withInterscope, that is joint venture nolonger made sense for either party."

"From our respective vantage pointsthis was simply the right thing to do,"said Field. "We at Interscope willcontinue our tradition of providing ahome for young and exciting artistsand we are confident that WarnerMusic will continue the same."

LIKE A ROLLING STONE

At the Beat, theGong Show is Over"The Beat" (KKBT-Los Angeles) has agreed to stop beating onAsian -Americans. As chronicled last time out, the station'smorning show, anchored by John London, had been targetedfor protests-including an advertising boycott campaign-bya local group, MANAA (Media Action Network for AsianAmericans). That's because, for more than a year and a half,London and his "House Party" crew had been depictingprominent Asian -Americans with thick, false accents, andplaying gongs behind Asian -American callers.

Unrepentant-in fact, downright defiant-until the groupstarted calling advertisers-KKBT offered MANAA a no -windeal in July. The station would either drop all Asian -orientedhumor-but also stop inviting Asian -Americans in for inter-views (KKBT is strong on community issues), or it'd keep onkeeping on, having Asian -Americans on the air and doing whatthe House Party cast thought funny. When MANAA rejectedboth proposals, KKBT unilaterally adopted the first option.

Finally, as our last column went to press two weeks ago, sta-tion management came to its senses. In a statement madejointly with MANAA, KKBT said that "The House Party staffand station management publicly apologized to those whowere unintentionally hurt by their broadcasts. In addition,KKBT VP/GM Craig Wilbraham decided that "the best way toavoid future offenses is to eliminate the comedy bits pertain-ing to Asian Americans...Asian American guests and issues willstill he included on all parts of the Beat's programming as theyalways have under our 'No Color Lines' policy." The morningshow's humor, KKBT said, only "meant to entertain throughgross exaggeration."

MANAA president Guy Aoki stressing that his group wasnever anti -humor, praised the station. "Although MANAAsought only to stop the use of foreign accent depictions," hesaid, "we commend the station's desire to avoid unnecessari-ly offending Asian Americans."

Here's to the end of the gong show-on KKBT and in allmedia. BETTER THAN CRISWELL: Did we say last week that StanFreberg, the maker of funny commercials and song parodiesdating back to the mid -'50s, was ahead of his time? Check thisout: In the liner notes of his classic A Child's Garden ofFreberg, he wrote that he began satirizing pop records "whenit seemed to me that the country was being overrun withfeathered vocal groups, e.g. the Crows, the Eagles, theOrioles"...The Eagles? In 1957, when Freberg wrote that, DonHenley was ten and in Texas; Glenn Frey, nine, was growingup in Detroit. Of course, they may have heard Freberg on theradio, and read those liners and thought, "Someday, when wemeet in LA in the early '70s and start a hand-why, we'll havea name for it. Thanks, Mr. Freberg!"

FAREWELL: This is Beverly Mire's last issueof the GAVIN. Warner Keeps Growing,

But What About Music? It could be that the summerof 1995 will be rememberedfor giants merging withgiants.

This week's big deal wasannounced last week whenTime Warner reached anagreement with cable entre-preneur Ted Turner to buyTurner Broadcasting, Inc.The move makes TimeWarner the largest media andentertainment company.

The prizes in this buyoutare the among the mostdesirable in the industry: theCable News Network, TurnerClassic Movies and theMGM/UA CommunicationsCompany.

What the move bodes for

Time Warner's music divisionis not yet clear. MichaelFuchs, who heads the divi-sion, was expected to becorporation chief GeraldFuch's number two man. However, the deal has thrustTed Turner into a vice chair-manship, and analysts say he(Turner) takes that spot.HBO, which was underFuchs, is now under Turner.

Music PublishingHits the Internet

BY DAVID BERAN

The Don Williams MusicGroup has launched I -SITE,the first on-line systemdevoted to music publish-ing. Although the musicindustry has plenty ofInternet sites associated withit, very few deal with directbusiness to business com-munications.

"The cumbersome processof finding out who controlsa song, doing the paper-work on it and negotiating adeal can all be done on-inein a matter of minutes,"Williams told GAVIN. I-SITE'sMusic Industry Information& Licensing Engine (I -MILE)gives professional usersaccess to information per-taining to catalogs andlicensing agreements.

"Response has come fromprofessionals because theywant to put their titles inand browse available cata-

logs," says Williams. I -SITE

is currently getting around1,200 hits a day, but anotherreason for that is one of theDon Williams Group'sclients.

"We control publishing ofthe Jimi Hendrix catalog, and there's a lot of peoplechecking out the Web sitebecause of him," saysWilliams, who promotes hiswriters (who include IsaacHayes, Chicago and LennyBruce) at the Web site the

RTV: They're Listening In...In a room not much bigger than a decent -sized produc-tion studio, they are monitoring you: taping you, listeningto you, taking down what you're saying.

"They" are the employees of Radio TV Reports, a NewYork -based company whose ten offices manage to can-vass stations covering 176 markets.

In San Francisco, RTV operates out of a posh down-town building, in a room that could be a couch potato'sdream, with nine television monitors, all tuned to differ-ent stations, on a metal rack, while another wall is linedwith several more sets, each of them being watched by anemployee.

Among other services, RTV sells video and audiotapesof broadcasts-up to two months old-to anyone whowants them. Most clients are from advertising and PR, andmost of the stations being monitored are news and busi-ness -oriented.

Although founded in the radio age-1936-RTV focus-es on television. But "there's a definite need for radiomonitoring," says Harry Telles, the San Francisco branchmanager. While ad and PR agencies want to know howtheir (and competitors') spots and video news releaseslook, clients also want to hear how their promotionssound on radio morning shows.

(RTV is not in the DJ air -check business. Rates for its ser-vices, which range from transcripts to edited audio and videotapes of up to an hour, are geared toward businesses.)

RTV is not alone. "There's lots of competition poppingup," says Telles, both on the national and local level.Despite his company's vintage, "the industry is fairlynew," he says. "We've entered the information age."

same way labels spotlighttheir artists.

The I-SITE's online licens-ing system is what reallyputs it on the map. By refor-matting the job of licensingsongs, the system is a timesaver for everyone frommusic compilers to sound-track supervisors.

The I -SITE also carriesWeb pages for the NationalAcadamy of Songwriters,House of Blues RecordingStudios, and is developing asite for attorney DonPassman, author ofEverything You Need ToKnow About The MusicBusiness.

"We're basically creating ahotel for people that aredefinitive in various fields ofthe music industry," saysWilliams. Like a hotel, theslowest part of the processis signing the check forroom service. Applicants stillhave to sign traditionalpaper contracts deliveredthrough the mail.

Access the I -SITE athttp://i-site.com/.

R. Charles Turns 21U -Haul managers should have

WANTED poster of R. CharlesSnyder hanging in their offices.

The Medford,Oregon PD canhardly be consid-ered good for busi-ness. The engine onthe helicopter thatlifted then -Presi-dent Nixon and hisfamily off the WhiteHouse lawn was stillwarm when R.Charles first hit theair at Medford'sKYJC on September29, 1974. He got offto a shaky start byasking listeners, "Are

you ready to rock?" and then hit thewrong turntable, playing Chicago's"I've Been Searching For So Long."He's never forgotten the date, sinceit also happens to be his sister'sbirthday. Who could've known backthen when he kept listeners awakefrom midnight 'til dawn that itwould be the beginning of morethan two decades in the market, minus a short stint cross state inKlamath Falls, where he got hisfirst PD gig.

There was also what might beconsidered a sabbatical in the early90s when Snyder sold cars, only toreturn to KTMT four years ago. Awell -liked and respected program-mer who's been a GAVIN Awardnominee on numerous occasions,R. Charles would no doubt be backkicking tires or in another line ofwork if not for his passion-music!Teamed up with new partnerBrian O'Connor for KTMT'smorning show, R. Charles regularlyputs in 12 -hour days.

In his opinion, the narrowermusical focus of Top 40 is thebiggest change in the format sincehis early days, and one gets thesense he bemoans the fall of full -service Top 40 radio. Thoughsome might view playing new,

R. CharlesSnyder in 1974and today.

untested titles a liability, Snyderhas always championed newmusic. "Being in a small marketgives me the luxury of taking afew more chances and even breaking songs on the morning show,"he says. R. Charles disagrees withthe long -accepted theory that newmusic should generally he avoidedin AM drive. He reasons that kidscontrol the radio and, in turn, whattheir parents are listening to in themorning. And, he adds, "Mom anddad want to find out what theirkids are listening to and don't wantto appear uncool."

For Snyder a key to being a trailblazer lies in how the unfamiliar ispresented. "We need to eliminatethe fear of the unknown. We spena lot of time at KTMT setting upthe new music, selling it with pas-sion and giving people backgroundon the artists. He encourages labelsto provide all the information pos-sible about a new act, citing as anexample the package compiled onThe Corrs by 143/Lava andAtlantic. When it comes to testinga new song, the rule he says, is"Never take calls until the tune fin-ishes playing. We don't want someone to form an opinion hearing 15or 30 seconds of a song. There's areason we get triple play cassettes. How often do we identify a songas a hit on the first audition?"Snyder can't stress enough theimportance of getting the audienceinvolved. "That requires properstaging. The first time we playedP.M. Dawn's 'Downtown Venus,'we asked listeners to figure outwhat song was being sampled. Then we played Deep Purple's'Hush.- Besides giving the staff thetools to sell new music, Snydermakes sure they don't blow credi-bility and pronounce names incor-rectly. He thinks back over hisyears in Medford and admits, "If Idon't know the market by now Inever will!" Happy 21st (but watchthe champagne, OK?).

On-line BY QUINCY McCoy

Harold Childs: "It's the Music, Stupid"

Harold Childs is know as an executive who canmanage any kind of promotion or sales job, adminis-ter a large staff and develop sales success with estab-lished and new artists. He has served in top positionswith Warner Bros., A&M and Polygram. Currently, heis the marketing consultant for Orchard Lane Music, alabel owned by the Musicland Corporation.

QMC: You wrote a guest edito-rial in GAVIN in 1981 called "Let'sTalk." You said, and I quote, "Inthe long run, music radio andmusic companies are strikinglysimilar. That which hurts ushurts you... that which helps ushelps you. The point becomeseven more relevant as marketsfragment, demographics shiftand technological advances

such as cable TV bring the potential to change the verynature of our industries, we need each other" Theycan't say Harold wasn't a visionary!

Harold Childs: (laughs) Well, I think it's all helpedthe growth of both industries. Obviously, videos haveplayed a major part in developing, spreading andmaking acts bigger. Cable and video shows areresponsible for breaking all kinds of acts worldwide.Radio still plays the fundamental part of being thething that's most available to people. In the car or thebathroom, radio still delivers exposure with frequency.

What do you think about radio's diversification?I think it's real healthy. When you move around

the country and see all the different acts out here, acts that touch on all types of formats-country, A3or urban-these acts get exposure at all kinds ofradio stations. Now you're going to find radio sta-tions that won't allow themselves to be put in anycategory. There is a whole sense that music is com-ing back, and it's because of radio's fragmentation.

So you don't miss the old Top 40, where you couldget a mix of different music on one station?

No, because with the fragmentation of music andradio, each artist can get the needed rotation he or sheneeds on the station that matches their style. This willeven help the crossover process, and make it faster. This is more exciting. I think that with the help of newtechnology, music has moved beyond the borders of

Harold Childs

Nashville, L.A. and New York. Artists that couldn't hesigned can make their own CD at a reasonable costand compete in the business by selling their CD's inbookstores, computer stores or on the Internet.Independent distributors are reaching out to theseartists and are marketing them with sophistication.

Radio stations aren't broadcasting anymore; they'renarrowcasting. You seem to echo that but, feel like it'sa breath of fresh air. Independent air.

Narrowcasting is allowing many little companies tocrop up and artists to get recorded and played. It'shelping on the local scene. Artist are selling productin clubs and on the streets. Stations are picking upand paying attention to what's happening locally. That's narrowcasting at its best.

Black artists have been employing many of thesetechniques for years, but especially lately with rap.

For years the only way for black performers to getexposure was selling in the clubs, on the street anddoing in -stores before they became fashionable. Theold saying "everything old is new again" applies here. It's come hack, but on a more sophicated and fasterlevel.

What's your take on the splintering of urban radio, from hip -hop to classics?

I think it's great. The bottom line is we werealways classified as a hit single -oriented people. Thefact is there are as many different tastes among blackpeople as there are among white. We are not all onemindset. Also, the idea that black consumers buytheir music only from Mom and Pop stores is wayoutdated.

Well, it's 1995. Where are radio and records going? We need to get back to what it's all about-the

music. We need to build real relationships betweenradio and record people again. Clinton says, "It's theeconomy, stupid." I say it's the music, stupid. It'salways the music. With all the conference calls, allthe bull, and all the stuff we go through, it alwayscomes down to the music. Clive Davis has alwaysbeen able to keep that at the forefront. Jerry Moss(Childs' former boss at A&M) would always say,"Harold, you're great with radio, but remember, it'sthe music." The greatest feeling in the world is beingable to say, "The new music I just heard was a killer"and express that feeling to radio.

Urban WorkshopIf you're one of the unfortunateprogrammers who's had to start thisrating period without the benefit of a

television, direct mail or outside market-ing campaign, your toughest job will be

trying to keep your station's call letterstop -of -mind with your listeners. Here are

a few suggestions on how to overcome

this obstacle.

Set up a major contest that employs theuse of the call letters, frequency or yourstation's slogan. Give away T-shirts and

hats that boldly display your calls. Useguerrilla marketing techniques and flood

the marketplace with outdoor stickers on

legal posting places around town. Hand

out bumper stickers at every majorevent: concerts, sporting events and

movie premieres.

2. `®fnDevelop several community projectsthat will get your station on televisionor ink in other media. The press likestopical issues and projects like "Coatsfor the Cold" or gun return projectsstructured around community services.

Develop every sales and promotional

appearance into a cume-building opportu-

nity. Sales promotions and air personali-ties doing charity work can bring in

media coverage if properly promoted

on and off the air. Make sure to do pressreleases for all your station projects.Always have on hand at your events

banners, T-shirts, bumper stickers,

photos, etc.INTERN!'

Don't overlook this new and excitingarea's potential to promote your stationand gain new listeners. You can bill-board your staff lineup, pump yourpromotions and do contests. Personalities

or guests can have chats with listeners, and your call letters will be seen by mil-lions. You can't get more top of mind

than that.

College

College PicksMERCURY REVSee You On The Other Side(WORK)The departure of eccentric frontmanDavid Baker left the fate of MercuryRev hanging in the balance. Yeton their third full-length, MR hasunleashed a renewed sonic crunch, proving without a doubt that theband is still very much intact andin control. The opening track,"Empire State (Son House inExcelsis)" is a glorious wash of tex-tured guitars, shimmering cymbalsand wavering flute. The Rev abrupt-ly shift stratospheres for "YoungMan's Stride," which delivers aswaggering guitar blitz in achameleonic aggressive mannerbefore drifting back into the quasi-prog intensive "Sudden Ray of Life."But by far the most exhilaratingsonic excursion comes in the formof "Close Encounters of the 3rdGrade," which celebrates the innerchild trapped deep within us allwith a swirl of quirky, triplistik war-bled sonic wackiness. Mercury Revpreside over an intrinsic lushnesswhich is altogether absent frommuch of today's musical musing. The eight tracks encoded uponthis disc will most certainly takeyou to the other side. Enjoy theride. -SPENCE D.

ROBERT MITCHUMCalypso Is Like So...(Scamp Records)Here it is finally-one of the mostsought-after collectors items in themusic world, rereleased for yourpleasure. Lauded in Research maga-zine's Incredibly Strange Music andsought after by the vinylphile pub-lic, this collection of traditionalcalypso tunes is made truly uniqueby the fact that actor RobertMitchum is the vocalist. His larger -than -life reputation has obviouslyadded to the mystique surroundingthe recording. To some overly seri-ous music buffs, Mitchum's presenceas vocalist might detract from thiscalypso's credibility. However, theamazing thing is that this album, despite an almost novelty status, isquite good. Maybe it doesn't com-pare to your prized Perez Pradorecords, but as far as Hollywoodstar recordings go, this one's topnotch. Released in 1957, Calypso isLike So... was probably not much ofan inspiration to a generationhooked on Elvis, but to the 1990sCocktail Nation it seems to beachieving a new life, and songs like"Mamma Looka Boo Boo" and "TicTic Tic" will he likely capture theimagination of a new generation, one whose style suggests that kitschis cool, and cool is the way to he.Like wow. -WALT REED

Punks Part 2: The Leftovers1,1 me, it's not like I

planned it this way. It's justthat due to space considera-

tions in last week's issue some ofyou were, like they say in themovie biz, left on the cutting roomfloor. Sorry kids. Look, I had alsoplanned on a separate featureabout those who are tailgating themore established movers and shak-ers. It was going to be called either"Moving The Movers Out Of TheWay," or "Better Check Your Rear -View Mirror." Yes, there is a wholenext level of eager heavers just sali-vating to have your job. And someof them are riding the bullet trainto success. Maybe the title shouldbe "They May Use OXY 10, ButThey're just As Dangerous As You."But, again, I was a hit verbose andwe wound up running out of room. Here, then, are some more upstartsthe format can't live without.Mary Divney, CapitolRecords

really nice people. You see, MaryDivney is the Ivory Girl. just lookat her picture. She's (and I'll try notto get really sappy here, hut it'sgonna be hard) the nicest personyou will ever meet in this industry. It's so weird. When gossipingbehind her back, we are all amazedthat Mary has had the patience tostay this long in a business filledwith characters that are, to be kindabout it, less than savory, some-times. I've never, ever heard heruse the "F" word. And her voicenever rises above the level of sin-cere pleading. She's just so damnpleasant all the time. That's whymost radio people like talking toher and adding whatever she'sworking. The alternative (Brian) ismuch too scary. Before Capitol,Mary was the national alternative

expert for Zoo, and before ZooMary did time at Warner Bros.Chuck Summers, PDKCXX/Riverside-SanBernardino, CA

In the next month or two I'mgoing to devote an entire columnto KCXX. Why? It's the story of a"David" living in the shadow of a-Goliath." To most sunburned andbreathing -impaired SouthernCalifornians, Riverside is just partof the sprawling mega -city that isL.A. But, to Arbitron, it's marketnumber 28. Pretty surprising, yes?

Sort of the West Coast version ofNassau/Suffolk. Now, you'd thinkKROQ would just OWN this territo-ry, but I got some news for ya.Chuck Summers is not going to letthat happen. Ever since KCXXflipped format about a year and ahalf ago, their numbers (both 12+and 18-34) have been trendingsteadily upward. And when Chuckclimbed into the drivers seat, thestation became a true force to bereckoned with. Chuck is very seri-ous about broadcasting, knowshow to do a lot with a little, andknows how to play the street. Some of his battle tactics comefrom working at XHRM "The Flash"in San Diego. And we all knowhow ugly that battle has been.Keep a very careful eye on Chuck.Rochelle Fox, GeffenRecords

That leavesThe Booties with a current thirdplace ranking despite its 130 reportsat a spin rate of 28 or better from 130stations. Unfortunately, the singleonly has about 80% of the format.Where it's played it kicks butt.

Sophie B. Hawkins' "As I LayMe Down" is setting an endurancerecord for female vocalists on theA/C chart in a manner similar toMartin Page's "In the House ofStone and Light" earlier this year. It'sunderlined at -#.1 a mere 37 weeksafter we took our first A/C reports onthe track hack in mid January.

Only one new entry in the top tenand that's Mariah Carey's "Fantasy"at #8 with an even 4,600 spins andthe second best Spincrease of anysingle in the format (+559).

This track launches the newly -con-figured Fleetwood Mac and its nextalbum, Time. The song is co -writtenby veteran Macster Christine McVieand her frequent writing partner,Eddie Quintela. It's a song that's notso much a sacred vow as it is astatement of acceptance. It's alsoironic that this lead single comesfrom the one member of the hand,Christine McVie, who won't partici-pate in the hand's next extensiveconcert tour.HEARTAlone (Capitol)Heart is in the process of celebrating20 years of musicmaking with theirlive album, The Road Home, and thisemotional, yet unplugged version ofone of their signature songs wasproduced by ex -Led Zepplin, JohnPaul Jones.BETTE MIDLERIn My Life (Atlantic)

A3 PicksGRATEFUL DEADHundred Year Hall (Arista)Watching Jerry Garcia on theWGBH/BBC television Rock N Rollseries (yes, GAVIN single-handedlydissed the Byrds' "Eight Miles High")makes us miss the Jer-man all themore. His description of Altamont1969 was dead -on; an amber, tire -burning evening of hell. Some twoyears later, during April of 1972, theDead trekked on over to Germanyto give the krauts a little lesson inlooseness. Why the Dead chose thisconcert to showcase in major labeltwo disc form is a puzzle, though itgets more obvious the deeper youget into each set. For instance, justwhen you conclude that "Lovelight"doesn't hold up to the Live Deadoriginal, Jerry's solo takes off like abat out of hell. In light of A3's recentloss, Hundred Year Hall is all themore historically relevant, a tragicway to shine a love light on twodiscs crammed with tasty, vintageDead. Obviously this release wasplanned eras before Garcia's untime-ly departure.

PAUL KELLYDeeper Water (Vanguard)Paul Kelly has always been a shortstory writer with a guitar. DeeperWater is no exception. The contentranges from the melodic to theintense. "I'll Forgive But I Won'tForget" is a scathing tale of betrayal, and Kelly drags you right into the liv-ing room where it's all going down."Deeper Water" is another harrowing

tale with a rather shocking ending."Madeleine's Song" is an African -flavored dance tune, not unlike PaulBrady's "World Is What You MakeIt." Throughout Deeper Water, Kellyinvents Raymond Carver type scenar-ios, often with rock n roll, less fre-quently as a folksy story -teller. Eitherway, Kelly's got lots to say to sophis-ticated adult listeners. "Extra Mile" isa good starting point.

JOAN ARMATRADINGWhat's Inside (RCA Victor)

After spending her entire recordingcareer on A&M, Joan Armatrading isback with her 14th album and a freshoutlook, an album that touches newground as well as recalling the stylesof past work with Glyn Johns andSteve Lillywhite. What's Inside is afirst class package produced byDavid Tickle, with high caliber play-ers and Sting/Petty/Gabriel sidemenlike the Kronos String Quartet, Manu

Katche, Tony Levin, Darryl Jones andBenmont Tench. "Songs" is ourabsolute favorite, the epitome ofArmatrading's revived spirit, notunlike something Sting might pro-duce. With a baker's dozen worth ofsuperb songs to choose from, wenarrowed down to keepers like"Lost The Love" (a superb modernblues song akin to Little Willie John's"Need Your Love So Bad") and"Merchant Of Love" (the best acousticsong of the batch) as emotionalstandouts. Welcome hack, Joan.

INDIGO GIRLS"Bury My Heart At WoundedKnee"! "Thin Line" (Epic)Let's hope Wounded Knee isn't agambling casino these days. Thefirst shot out of the chute from theIndigo's upcoming "live" album is astudio and live choice of BuffySainte -Marie's "Bury My Heart AtWounded Knee." Isn't it the finalirony that Native Americans arefinally getting it on the hack endfrom the blue rinse gambling set? Those who prefer a less didacticentry should consider "Thin Line,"amazingly recorded in a dressing

room at the Santa Monica Civic.MIKE SCOTTBring 'Em All In (Chrysalis/EMI)After a frustrating career of ups anddowns in America, Mike Scott retiresthe Waterboys, heads for the hillswhere he enters an artists colony andregains his muse of creativity. This isthe poignant opening/title track ofScott's first solo album. Bring 'ErnAll In falls into the Lennon PlasticOno Band/Dylan Blood On TheTracks category of unflinching hon-esty and simplicity. In other wordsor in Lennon's words, Scott "foundout." Wait until you hear songs like"What Do You Want Me To Do?" or

"Edinburgh" where the songwritingprocesses are transparent.

ERIC MATTHEWSR's Heavy In Here (Sub Pop)We first heard the music of EricMatthews at our favorite record store,Mod Lang in Berkeley. Alec (of theSneetches who works there) selectedMatthews' previous hand Cardinal ashis fave of 1994. On his own,Matthews has taken half of Cardinal'smelodic ingenuity and applied it to ahost of intriguing solo musical cir-cumstances. Don't be scared off bythe alternative reputation of Sub Pop.Instead, dive into the arrangementsof this fine Northwestern hand. You'llhear a little Brian Wilson, Moodiesand Colin Blunstone/Zombies flavorinside the intricacies of songs like"Fanfare," "Soul Nation Select Them,"or "Hop And Tickle."

G LOVE & SPECIALSAUCECoast To Coast Motel (OKeh/Epic)G Love's sound is steeped in originalcharm, an encompassing mixture ofbeat poetry and blues that's current-ly roping in young listeners, includ-ing swooning females. "Nancy" hasall the rhythmic poise of an old-fash-ioned hump and grind strip tease, with sparse pastie-and-a-g-stringinstrumentation. "Kiss And Tell" isa fatter entry, the closest thing to ahook -driven single you're likely tohear from this hunch. Last timearound, G Love spent many monthson the road working up a solidfollowing.

CLOCKERSSOUNDTRACKVarious Artists(MCA/40 Acres & A Mule)Besides including a hell of a lot ofcinema -graphic style in his movie,Spike Lee has put together a stunningsoundtrack for Clockers with musicthat reflects the demographic he seeksfor his film-adult-oriented multi-kultisongs. The best tracks are the sameones that jump off the screen, includ-ing Des'ree's "Silent Hero" (a nice mixof acoustic guitar and soul singing),Seal's textural "Bird Of Freedom" and

Chaka Khan's duet with BruceHornsby, "Love Me Still." Granted, it'san odd collision of culture, but themusic is original and daring.

DAN ZANESCool Down lime (Private Music)Folding the Del Fuegos after theirfourth album in 1989, Dan Zanesretreated to upstate New York fora seven month chill out. Sevenmonths turned into seven years, asZanes concentrated on instrumentalmusic (that's his vibrato guitar usedin the opening massacre scene ofOliver Stone's Natural Born Killers).Zanes kept in contact with Fuegosproducer Mitchell Froom, and nowhe's reactivated his vocals with theoriginal starkness the later Fuegosrecordings strayed away from.Cool Down Time's Muscle Shoalishgrooves fits in well with currenttimes. It's welcome breathing spacefor A3. "Rough Spot" is the beststarting point while our favorite is"No Sky." "Tested" is a candidopener-the kind of song onlythe '90s could produce.TOM COCHRANEI Wish You Well (Capitol)Tom Cochrane has a knack forcoining catchy songs. "Life Is AHighway" was a stand-up song, worthy of a thousand consecutivespins. "I Wish You Well" is more ofa builder, potentially at home on anearly Who album. But it's the eventempo and the wheezy harmonicathat puts it in the pocket for com-mercial rock -leaning A3 stations.

JEFF ARUNDELRide The Ride (Triad)Ride The Ride follows up 1993'sCompass as a pride -filled Minneapolisexport. "Ride The Ride" the openeris a jaunty introduction, the disc'sobvious airplay starter. "HarmonKillebrew" has a Harry Chapin-esquering as Arundel reveals more TwinCities roots, the writer mourning aloss of innocence as baseball andan abandoned amusement parkserve as faded American symbolsthat Arundel utilizes with pleasing, literate results.

KERRY KEARNEYRockin' Blues in the style of Stevie Ray Vaughan,

Duane Allman and Freddie King.

Inside Country By CYNDIHorrz E

Pareigis: On RadioLarry Pareigis will soon be leavinghis post as PD of KYCY-San Francisco,to become the vice president of pro-motion at Nashville's new AlmoSounds. He is leaving the station justas Infinity Broadcastingpurchased Alliance, andwith it four "YoungCountry" properties (KYNG-Dallas, WYCD-Detroit,KYCY-SF and KYCW-Seattle.) We asked Pareigisto give some parting wordson radio, and, since heknew he probably wouldno longer be mentioned inthe Friday Fax every week, he con-sented to the interview.

How do you think Infinity willinfluence the Young Countrystations?

Infinity is a very heavy dutyplayer, and they seem to buy intothe mission and understand theconcept of personality radio, andthe values that Young Country sta-tions have. Infinity is a companythat is very hands-off. They wantthe local general managers to beresponsible for cash flow, and theway they arrive at that cash flow isultimately up to them, so all thedecisions are going to be local.

What do you think is the biggestproblem facing country radiotoday?

I think records need to be walkedthrough rotations more slowly, because there are a lot of recordsreaching heavy that aren't familiarenough with the audience yet. I'mnot a subscriber of cutting lists-I'ma proponent of keeping a larger list, but keeping it slower. There is a lotof great material out there right nowand to not utilize it is a waste. Playthings as long as they are working, and if you have a larger list walkthings through more slowly until theaudience is familiar with them.

How do you see the state of

Larry Pareigis

country radio?Confused. There's the old Zen

saying "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear." Maybe itstime for someone to come in and

show it a different way. Idon't think retreating intoideas of the past is theway to go. There is noth-ing to find there exceptthe past.

What will you missmost about radio?

That's probably a bet-ter question to ask me inabout six months. Right

now I can say the thing I'll proba-bly miss the most is the day-to-dayhandling of the air talent. The staffhere are exceptional. It's like ateam of race horses. It's been a joyworking with them, to try to articu-late the mission of the station.

Are you encouraged by the stateof Country music?

Yes. If Nashville were a factory itwould be running at alx)ut 99°/o

capacity. Just when you are thinkingthere isn't a good record in thisentire stack, along comes somethinglike "The Car" that gives you goosebumps and makes you believe again.

Country music is going to havethe largest fourth quarter sales in itshistory, because of all the superstarmaterial out there. A great fall hookis being handed to radio on a silverplatter with the Garth Brooks,Wynonna, the George Strait box,Travis Tritt, Faith Hill, Shania Twain,John Michael Montgomery, andAlan Jackson-just to name a few.

What's the best advice you'veever gotten?

My father told me: "Stay low andyou will come walking out of thecannon smoke smiling." But prob-ably my favorite piece of advice is:"you can win more people withsugar than you can vinegar."

If you had control over the wholeContinued on page 42

I'd try to create a more radio friend-ly, radio aware environment at labels.I would put a little less money towardsvideo, hire the absolute best promo-tion staff I could and throw a littleless money towards independents. Ithink you have to have an awesomeindividual team and not give themany excuses not to perform. Mostimportantly, I would make sure themusic wasn't in-elevant. As Tom Peterswrote in his most recent book, "excel-lence is the price of admission to thestadium." If you're not excellent, youdon't even get in to compete.

Will you be doing things different-ly at Almo Sounds?

By virtue of my years in broad-casting, I can't help but approachthings differently. There are going tobe a lot of things that I shouldn't dothat I'm going to do and learn from.Out of all of that trial and error, there are going to be some punchesthat are going to land. I think ithelps coming from a different envi-ronment because I won't know thatsomething won't work. Don't tell methat I can't climb that hill becauseI may end up climbing it. A goodfriend once told me I was a mix ofstreet smarts and Forrest Gump.I thought that was a pretty goodassessment. There are a lot of thingsyou know, but you also end up ina lot of places by accident."

HAPPY HOLIDAYS ALREADYThere's more than the usual reasonto look forward to Halloween thisyear; Dwight Yoakam's first studioalbum in two years, Gone, will bereleased October 31. With each newalbum Dwight comes more into hisown. He's outdone himself again;the album features guest appear-ance by the Rembrandts, JimLauderdale and Joy Lynn White.

Clint Black is releasing his firstChristmas album this season, with thefirst single, "The Kid," due in earlyNovember. I haven't heard for sure, butI hope the album contains my favoritecontemporary country Christmas song:Black's "Til Santa's Gone." RCA is alsoreleasing a Christmas compilation fea-turing Lari White, Lonestar, ClintBlack, Aaron Tippin, John Ander-son, Lorrie Morgan, and of course, the ever popular Singing Dogs ver-sion of "Jingle Bells."

Once again, Americana gets toembrace a truly gifted singer -song-writer who is relatively unknown.David Olney has been kickingaround Nashville for years, hasreleased a string of honest andintense records, and has hadnumerous songs cut by the likes ofEmmylou Harris and LindaRonstadt. On High, Wide andLonesome, Olney serves up some ofhis best songs and performances todate. "Another Place, AnotherTime" could easily he a Hank

Williams Sr. song, except for thefact that Olney wrote it. "MyFamily Owns This Town" revealsthe dark side of one of a communi-ty's higher -standing members in astyle that Olney has mastered-bru-tal, lasting honesty. "In Your Eyes"marks the recording return ofFlying Burrito Bros. steel guitarist"Sneaky Pete" Kleinow, "Vincent'sBlues" features a duet with RodneyCrowell, and Band members RickDanko and Garth Hudson alsomake appearances. On1 Corner BY KEITH ZIMMERMAN

Interview With an IndicMichael Carlson, who heads upMC Promotion out of Seattle, hasbeen in this business since theNew Age and jazz fusion days ofthe early '80s. Since this week's

cover story isdevoted to

Promotionindies, we invit-

MC Promotion's ed Mike to stepMike Carlson up to Z Corner. In our conversation, Carlson asksas many questions as he answers, stressing the importance of sup-porting artists who actively tour aswell as record.

What's the difference between pro-moting jazz and adult alternative?

With jazz music folks, I'm deal-ing generally with a music inten-sive atmosphere, and with peoplewho hear music from all corners ofthis world. They don't necessarilyhave a greater musical sensibility, but it's more in the center of theirplate. On the AA side, with theconsultants and such, I need toknow if stations make their ownmusical decisions. If they don't, dothey have any input in makingmusic decisions? Either way, itwon't denigrate my feelings towardthose stations, but I will temper myapproach. If I'm talking to some-body who, with their programdirector, sits and makes a decisioneach week, my interest is in talkingabout the project as a whole.

What is the bottom line of pro-moting records in jazz/A2?

I'm interested in working withmusicians who are actually trying toget out and get paid for playing onstage. If I represent artist A, no mat-ter who I'm talking to at jazz or AA,be it a consultant or not, I want tomake sure that they're aware thatthis person is out there touring.Secondly, if that person is comingto their market, what can I do? Can

we bring him by for an interview?Do you want to meet him? Wouldyou like seats for the show?

What's your role as a musicaladvisor to the stations you speakwith each week?

In talking to stations not consult-ed, I have a greater sense that theyhave an interest in hearing aboutmy personal impressions of a par-ticular record. I have less of thatsense these days when I deal withconsulted stations. They want toknow the track, but given thesixty -plus AA stations out there, itdoesn't seem logical that one trackis going to appeal to all of them.

Do you worry about AA being toosingles- or single -song oriented?

I do in this sense: You don't goto the store to buy the latest singlefrom Rick Braun, or whoever isnumber one on the GAVIN AA chartany particular week. If you're inthe record and career -buildingbusiness, your expectation is forradio to look at multiple tracks.Having had the typical number ofretail experiences from age 15 on,I realized early on that buyingrecords based on one track can bea ripoff. That's what runs throughmy mind when people tell me AAshould be a singles -based format. Ifeel that exposing multiple tracksprovides for a more informed retailexperience and shows greaterdepth on the part of the artist.

Isn't it all about playing greatsongs, regardless of which format?

If we're talking about great songs, play them. But am I listening toindividually great songs when I lis-ten to AA radio? Is it a mass appealexperience? Is it lyrical? Is it newinformation in some way,-maybelike Bela Fleck and his banjo, dis-covering a new texture-the soundof an instrument being reinvented?

Should there be more energy inthe music AA is currently playing?

The answer has to be yes. It'sdesirable, given the context of theworld we live in. Once you put

Continued from page 46energy into music, i.e., a beat peo-ple tap their feet to, then that meansyou've got their bodies. When youhave their bodies, you have theirminds. They become involved. Isn'tinvolvement a vital element stationswant from their listeners?

What is your background in themusic business?

I worked with Windham Hill in theearly '80s. Prior to that I was sitting ina loft in Seattle playing piano, writingsongs and jamming with musicians. In late 1983 I was the first personhired by Windham Hill to call com-mercial radio stations. Jeff Heimanand I called every AOR station thathad a signal, trying to convince themthey ought to have a jazz show ifthey didn't already. At that time, jazzshows at AOR stations were jazzfusion shows. I was calling on thecusp of George Winston. Winstonwas a great success on the road, andthere was quite an interest in hismusic and its simplicity. I remained

with Windham Hill until late 1987.What are your feelings about

jazz radio? Some jazz stations do a good job

of mixing things together-blues intobop into fusion into Duke Ellington, full circle. No matter how much Ilove it and regardless of how manynew young players are comingalong, I have to believe the audiencefor mainstream jazz is a diminishingitem. At some point there isn't muchinterest in hearing 'My FunnyValentine' again, or another guy whocan play every Charlie Parker riffright hack to me just like I originallyheard it on the record. Maybe jazzradio has painted themselves a littlebit narrow in terms of what they playall day long. I'd like to see the doorswing open just a little bit wider.

What is your criterion for accept-ing projects?

Particularly where AA is concerned, Imost often turn things down on a pro-duction value basis. There's certainlyexceptions, but I get much less warmth

JAZZ/ADULT ALTERNATIVE

Continued from page 48or reception at radio tor music that'scomputer -generated. If you're a newguy playing drum machines and a pro-grammed bass, you might have a hardtime unless it's a dam great sound.Lush string arrangements, sophomoriclyrics and lack of feel cause problems. If it's jazz, where are the lines of influ-ence? A project used to be an eight- to12 -week commitment, now it's boiled

down to four weeks if people listen ontime. You find out real quick whatsinks or swims.

What are _yourfrelings aboutlabels that hire multiple indies?

I have nothing against being on aproject with somebody else, but atsome point there's a diminishing lawof returns. It's a way for labels toshow emphasis and commitment. On the other hand, sometimes

you're annoying programmers withtwo folks asking the same questions. You have to work that out. Thereare some instances where youbelieve in a record artistically, butyou know in your gut it's going tobe a real hard road ahead promotingit. That might be one of the best cir-cumstances for having a couple ofpromoters on one record.

What's your view of consultants

these days? It's a curious situation right now,

and it's also an early experiment to adegree with Broadcast Architecturebeing so important. On the positiveside, the four or so of my recordsadded at BA so far stayed on thecharts longer. The negative I see isthat I can't put my finger on the moti-vation behind stations looking intoadditional tracks. When a programmer

JAZZ/ADULT ALTERNATIVE A/Csays to me they only have 23 slotsand have to drop somebody else'srecord if they add one of mine, I thinkthat too tight. On the other hand, BAis there to increase ratings, not solelyto make sure my artists have careersand sell records, which is my primarygoal.

How should radio deal with somany new releases?

One way to prioritize is to find outwho is touring. Maybe you mightwant to listen to their releases quicker. To tie the format together nationally, maybe stations should announce aU.S. tour calendar for our format eachweek, and show their listeners thatwe're on a moving train here.

Metal ScrapsI'm still recovering from SanFrancisco `49ers' loss to the DetroitLions so please excuse theabsence of a cohesive story. Iblame myself for the `49ers loss tosuch an inferior team because Ididn't avert my eyes during theirattempted field goal kick in the last12 seconds. If I had looked awayor closed my eyes the ball wouldhave gone through the uprights, the game would have gone intoovertime and Steve Young wouldhave connected with Jerry Rice forthe winning touchdown. I'll neverlook at a crucial play again...It'sgoing to be a busy add day forhard rock/metal radio on October

up talking about his Down showexperience. "I wasn't at allimpressed with Down," he says."It was the same Pantera banterbut with different tunes. It's a littleknown fact that there's an EastLansing punk hand called Down, who originally owned the rights tothe name but have since sold therights to Phil and the boys. They're now called Down MF andI have to say I'm more impressedwith them than with Down."

Well that's just down right weird.Ciancio may not have beenimpressed with their show but it's afact that they're huge favorites outin radio land. "My listeners havereally taken to Down," says KZRK-Amarillo's Eric Slayter.

KZAK-Reno Chris Payne reportsthat Down is getting "greatresponse. Down is doing reallywell here," says KUPS-Tacoma'sHeidi Stiegmann.

I haven't seen the band play soI don't know how they are livebut I do know this is the secondweek that they reign over mychart with 420 spins...Here's meand Jill Castellano getting closewith Ozzy.

Rock PicksOZZY OSBOURNEPerry Mason (Epic)The Ozzyman has returned to hauntrock radio with his latest single"Perry Mason." Not too manyrock/metal directors will be able toresist Ozzy's eerie vocal chants orthe low -end string rhythms thatmake up this single. "Perry Mason,"taken from Ozzy's next full-lengthOzzmosis, which is going for addson October 23/24, will get the nodfrom commercial rock radio with itscrunchy guitars and overall cohesiverock 'n' roll beat. College metal

directors will appreciate the teethychords and brooding drum beats, and the fact that this is Ozzy. Theman who's been making metalrecords before many of them wereeven thought of.

ANTHRAXFueled (Elektra/EEG)

The firstsinglefromAnthrax'snextalbumStomp442, isappropri-ately titled

"Fueled" and it will rip hardrock/metal radio a new frequency."Fueled" offers a bold mix of gyrat-ing guitar riffs that riot off of solidbass lines and double-time drumslams. Anthrax fans, and metal lis-teners in general, will get off onthe band's aggressiveness andintense style of play which hasalways been their trademark. Someof you may think this sounds likeprevious Anthrax material, butbefore passing judgment give it afew spins and watch your phoneslight up. "Fueled" will inject yourshow with volatile guitar blasts andfuming vocal shots. A must -play forany metal show.

INTO ANOTHER

FROM: New York

LABEL: Hollywood

RADIO PROMOTION CONTArT*

Will Knapp (818) 560-5670

LATEST RELEASE: Seemless

ADD DATE: October 3, 1995

ABOUT THE BAND: Into Another was

formed in 1990 by Richie Birkenhead

(former Underdog vocalist and Youth

Of Today guitarist-prominent names

in the late '80s New York hardcore

scene) and Drew Thomas (drummer

from the seminal sassy youth crew

Bold). They hooked up with Peter

Moses and Tony Bono to explore their

mutual love for unique music.

ABOJT THE ALBUM. Seemless is

the rasult of Into Another's growth

over the last year combined with the

freedom that signing to a major label

has allowed. "The most wonderful

thing about this experience was bein:

able to make a record without the

pressure of having to finish in a

couple of days," says Birkenhead.

"Also, I could stop working the doors

at nightclubs and Tony could stop

delivering pizzas."

THOJGHTS FROM ROCK RADIO:

"The single Kicks ass. Ignaurus did

really well and it is everything I

expected from Into Another"-Mike

Haines, WOZN.

"I was really surprised. I really liked

it. They have a totally unique sound

and should get a bunch of new fans

fron this."-Chris Hoffman, WCWP.

"It's really good. Better than their

older stuff, they seem to be getting

better each time I hear them."

-Bob Hutchings, WXCI

TOM COCHRANEI Wish You Well (Capitol)Working out of his home stu-dio, Tom's Cabin, thisCanadian singer/song-writer/poet certainly can't beaccused of rushing out pro-jects too quickly. Cochrane'ssoon -to -be -released albumRagged Ass Road is his firstin four years. Early program-mer reaction makes it clearthis initial track is destinedfor plenty of exposure.

PIZZICATO FIVEHappy Sad

(Matador/Atlantic)Quirky pop courtesy of thegroup from Japan with thefunny name. It's infused with

a bouncy rhythm reminscentof '80s acts like Swing OutSister and it only makessense a song like this wouldbe used to compliment amovie about the world offashion modeling. "HappySad" is bound to keep 'ernsmilin'.CROSSOVER PICKGROOVE THEORYTell Me (Epic)It hasn't taken long for themusical partnership of BryceWilson and Amel Larrieux towind up top ten at urbanradio, but the music ofGroove Theory defiesboundaries and all popmusic programmers woulddo well to pull in this out ofthe stack and listen up if theyhaven't already. A call -outmonster in several marketsand simply one of thecoolest releases of '95.

The Gold Experience(Warner Bros./NPG)Part of wearing your mantleas a pop icon is reservingthe right to re -invent your-self from time and time. Theartist that's previously beenknown to fans around theworld as Prince has donethis with his new collection,The Gold Experience. Nodoubt his fans will find thedeeper meaning in thesongs because, as the linernotes say, he "isn't showingoff; he's searching." On thesurface though, the songsare radio and pop -friendly,as evidenced by stationsadding album cuts thisweek. Highlights include:"The Most Beautiful Girl InThe World" (his hit from1994), "Endorphinmachine,""Shhh," "319," "Gold" andthe single, "(Eye) Hate U."

THE MAVERICKSMusic For All Occasions(MCA)This aptly -titled third releasefrom the Mavericks showsoff their virtuosity and leadvocalist Raul Malo's forayinto a world beyond countrymusic. The Sinatra influenceis apparent long before thealbum -closing "SomethingStupid," which features aduet with Trisha Yearwood. But don't think for a minutethese boys have abandonedwhat they do best, which ismake great country -oriented

rockers("HereComes th(:Rain," "AllYou EverDo isBring MeDown")and two -steppers("One StepAway,""TheWritingOn TheWall"). It'sgreat tosee a bandof theMavericks'stature notplay it safeand followtheir nat-ural muse.

DAVID BOWIEOutside (Virgin)Ritual art with a live humanbody has existed fordecades. Now it's found itsway into music via DavidBowie's latest album,Outside. Nineteen cuts sur-round a ritual art crimestory. Read the gruesomediary, observe morphedBowie images and hear theindustrial onslaught of"Hallo Spaceboy" and "NoControl." Absorb ambient -avant garde tracks like"Voyeur of UtterDestruction (As Beauty)"and "Wishful Beginnings,"or opt for "A Small Plot OfLand," for its erratic jazzpiano. Friendlier tunesinclude "The Hearts FilthyLesson," "I Have Not BeenTo Oxford Town" and "WePrick You."

FIG DISHThat's what love songsoften do (Atlas)Chicago: home to the blues

and deep dishpizza. Nowthere's a newdish in town:Fig Dish. ThisChi -town quar-tet serves up13 songssmothered intangy guitarsauce, creatingan array ofhard drivin'rock -n -rollwith a sweetundertone.

While "Seeds" may be theradio pick hit, don't forgetto try a plate of "Nimble"or a side order of "Chewtoy." The more aggressive-ly inclined should be sureto taste test "Going gone"and "Rollover, please," aswell as "Wrong nothing,"which is garnished withsprigs of power guitar andlilting vocal harmonies. And to wash it all downthere's the cool refresh-ment of "Lemonader."Whether you get it to go ordecide to eat in, Fig Dish isa most satisfying sonicmeal.
