Garment exports on track to meet 10-year targetMyanmar’s garment exports rose from US$349 million in 2010 to nearly US$4.6 billion in 2018, contributing around 10% of the nation’s total export value.

According to the Myanmar Garment Manufacturers Association Chairman U Myint Soe, the garment sector has attracted increasing investments along with the growing number of factories and ever-expanding exports over the past decade, and the export volumes are expected to rise further in 2020. Ministry of Commerce Deputy Secretary U Khing Maung Lwin has also indicated that more and more Chinese firms have set up operations in Myanmar to benefit from preferential tariffs and counter US-China trade tensions.

The ever-growing demand accompanying with the new factories setting upWhile smaller factories were set up in the past, about six large-sized new garment plants are being set up in Myanmar per month each with at least 3,000 employees. The ever-growing demand for advanced manufacturing machinery is expected to stoke the development of the country’s garment industry. Imports of core weaving machines and sewing machines reached US$1.78 billion and US$1.26 billion, respectively, in 2018. However, Myanmar relies heavily on foreign supply of textile and garment raw materials including silk, yarn and cotton. Annual imports of such materials exceeded US$1.8 billion for a 9.4% share of the country’s total imports of US$19 billion in 2018. This has indicated close business ties between local factory owners and foreign suppliers.
