Welcome Back Green Wave!
What another exciting fall season here at
Newark Catholic High School. Our
volleyball team made it all the way to the
state semi-finals and our tradition-rich
football team is in the midst of yet
another spectacular season, playing in
the regional final this Friday night against
Bishop Ready.
It’s hard to believe that the first game of
the 2013-14 basketball season is just two
weeks away and our guys have been hard
at work since the end of last season. We
will have a relatively “inexperienced”
group of young men this year, however
their hard work and dedication over the
summer has our coaching staff very eager
for the start of this season. Our guys
have a chip on their shoulder and are
excited to show that they are ready to
put their names into the history books
here at Newark Catholic.
Heading into my 3rd season as the head
boys basketball coach and history teacher
at Newark Catholic I continue to marvel
at just how many people we have in our
community that simply care about one
another. The amount of time and effort
that everyone puts in (teachers, adminis-
trators, coaches, student-athletes, and of
course, parents) truly represents what
the Newark Catholic FAMILY is all about.
I feel blessed and honored that I get to
come to a job everyday that I truly love.
The students that we get to work with on
a daily basis makes me proud to be a part
of the Green Wave Family.

Our 2013 Summer Youth Basketball Camp had over 60 boys from our area
to come in and learn the skills and fundamentals of the Newark Catholic
Basketball Program. Our camp focused on teaching proper offensive
techniques (shooting, passing, ball handling, etc.) while encouraging the
concept of the TEAM through 3 on 3 and 5 on 5 league play. There were
daily contests such as hot shot, free throw, knock-out and the always
popular “dollar shots.” The four day camp ended with our coaches and
counselors selecting a first and second TEAM “All-Camp.” These individuals
were selected based on their teamwork, attitude, effort, and overall
commitment to learning the game of basketball. Those members (listed to
the right) then got to play an exhibition game against our high school boys.
A special thanks to my assistants, John Wheeler and Jamie Cox. Both of
them put in a lot of time and effort behind the scenes to once again make
this years camp a success. Additionally, I have to thank our high school kids
who came in to work camp as well. Their presence and willingness to help
instruct the youth in our area shows how the Green Wave basketball
program continues to grow.
It was another great week of instruction and games and we look forward to
another great summer camp next June.
CAPITAL TEAM CAMP—2013
This past summer we took eight of
our older guys (pictured below) to a
TEAM Camp held at Capital
University. This two-day event was
exactly what our TEAM needed to
experience. We certainly took our
lumps at times, but we competed on
every possession. As coaches, there’s
not much else we can ask of them.
On Day 1, we finished 1-3. We were
competitive in all of the games, but
we just needed to learn how to “get
over the hump.” It seemed like we
were in every game until the last few
minutes. Whether it was
inexperience, fatigue, or we simply
didn’t get it done, our guys continued
to believe in what we were preaching
to them. It was simply going to take
some time for this new group to gel.
On Day 2, it didn’t get any better early
on. Playing without Conor Keck
(resting an injury from the day
before), we got beat by 30 points and
looked “not very good.” I can even
remember joking around with some
of the guys on the bench saying “Well
guys… if we can’t catch the ball when
it’s passed to us and we can’t dribble
the ball without it getting stolen and
we can’t make any shots when we are
open, it might be pretty tough for us
to win any games this year.”
However, our staff learned a lot about
this young group of guys as the
second day continued to play out. We
were able to win our last game to
finish the regular session at 2-4.
Going into the tournament at the end
of the TEAM Camp, it’s safe to say we
weren’t planning on “winning the
whole thing”, but to our young guys’
credit, they continued to battle. One
win turned into two wins, turned into
three wins and before you knew it we
were playing in the championship
game of the tournament. Even in the
championship game, we found
ourselves with our backs against the
wall. We were down two points with
less than three seconds to go and our
opponents had the ball out of bounds
under our hoop. Well… Conor was
able to tip the in bounds pass and
Max Hogue picked up the loose ball,
hitting a floater as time expired to
send the game into overtime.
In the overtime, we got a defensive
stop late in the game and Luke
Ceneviva knocked down a 15’ jumper
with about five seconds to go to seal
the championship for us.
It was a wonderful experience for our
young guys to go through and built a
lot of positives for our TEAM moving
forward.

We took some of our older guys to a three day basketball
TEAM Camp held at Ohio University in Athens. Not only
was this a great basketball atmosphere for three days, but
our guys continued to mesh together and build
relationships both on and off the court. The event had a
great mix of both big schools and small schools. We took
care of business against some teams that we should beat
and we competed like crazy in our losses against some of
the bigger, stronger, more physical schools. There were
times that our guys could really begin to understand first
hand that the varsity game is played at a different speed,
and different level, from the Junior Varsity. It was exactly
what our guys needed to experience over the summer.
We finished the pool play event with a 14-6 record and
headed into the overtime tournament with some
confidence. Again, this tournament was something that
would only benefit our guys. We won the first three games
of the tournament (all in the final seconds—we had a
buzzer beater, some clutch free throws, and dodged a last
second shot). As we headed into the semi-finals, we once
again found ourselves with our backs against the wall.
Down two with less than 10 seconds left, we called
timeout and drew up a play for the win. Our guys executed
it to perfection. Max came off a double screen and stroked
the game winning three pointer at the buzzer to send us to
the finals.
In the finals, we matched up against a very talented
Zanesville Blue Devils squad. This team actually beat us by
10 during pool play. We were able to jump out on them
early and made our free throws down the stretch to pull
the upset.
The trip to Athens built confidence with our young guys
and showed that when they play and compete together,
good things can happen for this group.
The winter will show what you did all summer!

JV Heach Coach: Matt Buchanan
Freshmen Head Coach: Taylor Harle
The 2013-14 Varsity Green Wave will have some relatively fresh faces on the floor this season. We lost eight seniors,
including Newark Catholic’s All-Time leading scorer and Division IV state player of the year Jett Speelman as well as
1,000 point scorer David Meurer. Add in the loss of current Senior Chayce Crouch, who signed to play Big Ten
football with Illinois next fall, the Green Wave only returns one player with extended varsity experience. Senior #21
Conor Keck, 6’7” (8 points, 8 rebounds) will look to expand his role on the floor this season and provide leadership
and guidance for the new-comers to the varsity level. Conor will be joined by fellow seniors #1 Jacob Capretta, 6’1”
and #33 Spencer Chapman, 6’4” to help lead a young group of first year varsity players who are eager to begin to
make their mark in the growing tradition of the Newark Catholic Basketball Program.
We learned a lot about our guys from this summer. We worked on establishing roles within our program, we
worked to further develop our roles on the floor, we learned the speed of the varsity level, and focused on building
relationships both on and off the court that would give us the best chance at continuing our success here at Newark
Catholic.
This summer was about learning from each other and growing as a TEAM and I believe that we have a group of
young men who are ready to make their mark on the Newark Catholic Basketball Program.
