Individual Idleness towards Social Idleless

Marcio Galli

7:11AMThis is a day I had to do a presentation to a room full of students working

with IT in Brazil. A keynote in a local event, a lot of students from 1st to 3rd year of a technology course. My presentation was to related to the

topic of using of web for kiosks in public and semi-public spaces.

7:11AM then, and I had an idea, I wanted to change my whole presentation that day. But before you know,

I recall something a friend once told me about mornings.

Am

A friend once told that when he gets up in the morning his brain

simply does not work. He takes a few hours to warm up and to start focusing.

m

"When I go to sleep I assign myself a problem." ...

"It might be some mathematical problem" ...

"or even a business strategy question or an interpersonal problem." ...

"And then I go to sleep. Doing this primes my subconscious to think about it. "

Says Ray Kurzweil. And he adds that when we dream,

some of our brain censors in our brain are relaxed.

That day I blinked at 7:11AM ( think Blink the book ). The feeling, the free thought with no attachments. I believed so much, so intense it was real.

Can I control time?

( are we stuck with a social routine )

Do I own my time?

( can I leave a life of securities )

What can I do when I have to wait?

( snippets of time in between a safe world, bank line, before sleep, after sleep, holding on the phone, in the

train, sleeping in the bus, and more.

Another case: Sao Paulo city in Brazil: 2 hours + to get to work. Going back home? some people wait the next bus because the

current has no available seats to go back sleeping.

Who controls time?

U$275.00 : Doc's souvenir

And worse? in between my duties I have to wait - it frustrates

Body = Idle between? So waiting in that bus, transit for 1 hour, boarding, traveling, time to get up, to eat, bath, to fight, to kiss, to think, to recover, to heal = I tend to think this is not me or is the body part

Brain = Duties: To finish my work, to progress more than my co-workers? To do a trip I wanted, to have a vacation to evaluate all I did - a run where goal is sometimes hijacked by the system -d =

Back to Sao Paulo:the bus takes me, for 2

hours, back home, I need to recover the brain,

relax.

Goods from the Distributed Open-based Rediscovery of the Idle

In the computer word is easy, if you configure the idle network moments, you can make a mass force:

Can we mix technology with the idle in our routines in our environment?Case: City of Sud Mennucci in Brazil: 6000 with free internet, yet what are they searching online? Twitter trending topics shows that a lot of top topics are TV related - Does the TV expands beyond the time in front of the TV? When people go home, with free internet , late night. What they do? Challenge Question

Can we take the web to communities, to public and semi-public spaces, to physical locations, to promote participation and improvements to community environments, places like parks, hospitals, schools, walls of houses, and more.

Escaping opportunities

Not a TV, not broadcast, not an image. Yes to ideas and idealsPromotes participation via open web movementsTake the web to communities, hack the spaces with thoughts, with awareness to good for locality and aiming social benefit

How will it Work?

Can You Embed a bit of this intention in Your Idle Time?

Old TV with open door byhttp://www.flickr.com/photos/zagrobot/2688204772/

Embedding turns to unintended good thingsAt SESC-SC/Brazil, a social lan house, you can watch a user using the computer in realtime. This was unintended benefit as the sytem was originally put in place to let a IT professional give classes at the location

Embed to the Idle for Public and Semi-Public spaces Whiteboard? Digests the web? Shows videos? Local community programming? Can I play? Can I interact? Is this social interaction? It's Ad space? What is this?

It's not mobile, it's not the desktop. It's not the TV too, it may impact Idle mode, it could even grow beyond.

A web-connected catalystkiosk to help out this idea: Social-aware Kiosk for Public and Semi-Public:

* Supports Drumbeat * Powered by Mozilla* Started in University In Brazil, probably not the target that needs most. * Uses Open Web/based Stack, Connects with the Web directly, Aggregator for Social Environments

First prototype, first circleAt the computer science week at ICMC-USP, we run an experiment with grown up kids ( 20-30 year old ). The display kiosk was through the social web, Twitter and other sources. Connected alumni with students, new twitter accounts created, at the end of the week, a student hacked the system with a beer bash party flier

Case: Marcio placed a post-it first next to the TVs, while we had no online twitter-based post-its open ( first version ). A student was writing something and Marcio interrupted her: What are you writing? She said " this TV is not good. It has a bad layout". Then I asked why and she added "The layout is broken because the mathematical functions are showing as Latex encoded characters instead HTML or graphic language. This caused the TV to break the layout, it looks bad".

We looked the problem better. Then we realized that the main web site of the organization had the problem in there too. The panel was in this case, a simple reflection of the organization's communication problem. The locality had about 1300 students and professors looked the problem in the TV. The web site, with thousands of users consuming the same problem was not an issue. Only when the problem was exposed in the local kiosk they became aware. A social local pressure perhaps.

Now and future

We are locked in a 4:3 and now in the 16:9 full HD box. We gotta put the TV in the

vertical, take the panel to the space, break these boxes, embed a new idea for

participation.
