individual impact
It may begin with one action, even one gift, but the result is something far greater.
Since its founding in the mid 1980’s, the Sequoia Hospital Foundation has received nearly $56.5 million in donations, every penny of which began with a conscious decision by one or more people to make a difference at Sequoia. These actions reveal themselves in the form of outright donations, estate gifts, grants, and contributions made at events. They come to our foundation from eight year-old girls with zip-lock bags of coins earned at lemonade stands, pioneering inventors, and seasoned investors with seven-figure donations. Their contributions, regardless of size, have touched every patient care department at Sequoia. They helped to fund our new Patient Pavilion, opening later this year. Each comes as a result of an individual’s decision and each impacts countless thousands over generations to come.
As is too often the case, the true depth of one’s impact is often revealed after their passing. In Fall 2011, we lost our treasured friend and Sequoia Hospital Foundation Board member, Kathy Cresci. A model of the spirit of Individual Impact, Kathy left her mark on every one of our Foundation’s programs in a unique and wonderful way.
In the coming pages, we look forward to sharing with you not only Kathy’s impact, but the indelible mark made by others who committed themselves to assuring that Sequoia Hospital is always here in the moments our community needs us most.
May their stories serve as an inspiration for each of us to consider our own impact, what we hope it will be and whom we hope it will touch.

dear friends
the belief that a single person, living life purposefully, can make a difference
kathy cresci
a lifetime of impact
When this community lost our friend Kathy Cresci, we lost more than a member of our Foundation’s Board of Directors and more than a tireless advocate for Sequoia Hospital. Kathy knew that a life lived purposefully could shape those around her for the better. With a quiet, confident, and elegant grace Kathy devoted her life to others.
Like many, Kathy’s first experience with Sequoia Hospital was as a new mother in our Birth Center. In 1970 she and her husband Andy welcomed a daughter, Lisa, into the world and in that joyous moment not only established their own young family, but also forever joined Sequoia’s family. Kathy lived her life always putting family first, and Sequoia was blessed to be a part of her extended circle.
Kathy and Andy lived locally and remained donors and supporters of Sequoia. Lisa even served as one of Sequoia’s “candy stripers” for a time. However, the depth of their relationship with the hospital changed in the summer of 1998 when Kathy was diagnosed with breast cancer. Together with Sequoia’s skilled oncology team, Kathy fought the cancer with chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. With time, and in remission, Kathy could have returned to her life as it had been before. Instead she chose to dedicate herself to ensuring that others would always receive the same quality, compassionate care that she had received at Sequoia Hospital.
As donors, Kathy and Andy Cresci helped fund Sequoia’s first linear accelerator, a then-new technology used to deliver targeted doses of radiation precisely on cancer cells, while preserving the surrounding tissue. Kathy openly shared her own powerful story as a cancer survivor, helping to motivate donors and encourage those facing the disease. She continued her involvement with Sequoia and in 2000 was
elected to the Sequoia Hospital Foundation’s Board of Directors.
Never identifying as a cancer victim, Kathy continued to share her own story with the community and in 2002 she and Andy co-chaired the Foundation’s East Meets West gala. Together they inspired others to support the hospital’s programs and to assure that world-class care was available to their friends, family, and neighbors. When discussions began regarding the new Sequoia Hospital, the Cresci’s were outspoken ambassadors for the hospital. As a member of the Foundation Board, Kathy helped to guide the Capital Campaign in support of the project. Though she continued to face cancer, Kathy was a tireless advocate and was appointed to Sequoia Hospital’s Community Advisory Council and elected Vice Chair of the Foundation’s Board of Directors before concluding her nine-year term.
In Fall 2011, after a 13-year battle with cancer, Kathy Cresci passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by Andy, Lisa, and her loving family. Her enduring legacy continues to fill the halls of Sequoia Hospital.
Foundation events provide grateful patients and prospective donors a forum to learn more about the hospital and the foundation while allowing existing donors to identify their opportunity for impact.
In 1985, in the Foundation’s early days, legendary actor and comedian Bob Hope entertained our Foundation guests and in 2012 we continued the tradition welcoming another legendary
performer, Dr. Bill Cosby. Honoring his boyhood friend, esteemed Sequoia cardiologist, Dr. Edward Anderson. Dr. Cosby entertained a sold-out room of Foundation guests at the Ritz-Carlton in Half Moon Bay. Proceeds from the event benefitted the Sequoia Hospital Heart and Vascular Institute.
The traditional Foundation gala, like that hosted by Kathy and Andy Cresci, and our annual food and wine event were blended once again in 2012 to become the magical Under the Big Top evening. Held in a new location, under the shade of the oaks on a private Atherton estate, the event was co-chaired by Lisa Ulibarri Kerns and Kelley Roberts and benefitted the expansion of Sequoia Hospital’s award-winning Birth Center.
Closing the year was our annual Invitational Golf Tournament co-chaired by Gregory Engel, M.D.; Beverly Joyce, M.D.; and Greg Kemist. We were joined this year by PGA Tour and Champions Tour veteran Mark Pfeil as we raised funds in support of Sequoia Hospital’s Emergency Department.
foundation events
Impactful gatherings. Meaningful discussions.Kathy and Andy Cresci served as Chairs of the Foundation’s
2002 East Meets West gala, engaging friends and raising both
awareness and funds for the hospital’s life-changing programs.
In 2005, Olga Sommer, a long-time patient of Sequoia Hospital received the unfortunate news that her lengthy battle with leukemia and lupus was nearing its end. Rather than retreating quietly, Olga and her husband, Fred, openly approached the Sequoia Hospital Foundation to see what they could do in support of the hospital’s Infusion Center that had so compassionately cared for Olga. Their first gifts helped purchase comfortable chairs for those receiving infusion treatments. Next, they funded a blanket warmer for the department, followed by a patient scale, and a television. They had only just begun.
Olga passed away late in 2006 but not before instilling in Fred the importance of providing for Sequoia Hospital’s future. He continues to give passionately in her memory, and to assure that Sequoia is cared for even after his passing. Fred Sommer has joined the Foundation’s Legacy Circle by including Sequoia Hospital in his planning with a charitable gift annuity. When the new Sequoia Hospital opens this year, the Infusion Center’s waiting department will be named in memory of Olga Sommer, loving wife and mother. The dedication to Olga is a lasting honor to the impact she and Fred have had on the care provided to Sequoia’s patients.
planned giving
Giving today. Impacting our tomorrow.
Before her passing Kathy Cresci, together with her husband Andy,
met with the Sequoia Hospital Foundation to discuss providing
for the hospital’s exciting future in her estate planning.
Like Kathy, Andy, and Lisa Cresci, involvement with Sequoia Hospital is also a family affair for the Burns family. Harmon Burns joined the Sequoia Hospital Foundation’s Board of Directors in 1996 and in 2007 his now widow, Sue Burns was elected to the Board. The family’s legacy at Sequoia crosses generational lines and today Harmon and Sue’s son-in-law, Robert Dean, is a member of both the Foundation’s Finance and Grants Committee and the Board of Directors.
A family’s giving comes as the result of individual care and unique experiences. Sequoia has cared for three generations of the Burns family and as we looked towards the hospital’s future, the family stepped forward. Harmon and Sue, with their daughters Trina Dean and Tori Humphry (and their husbands Robert and Steve), agreed that the future of Sequoia Hospital was of critical importance to our community. In that spirit, and
in Harmon’s memory, Sue pledged $1 million from the Burns Family Foundation to the new Sequoia Hospital Campaign. Within the new Patient Pavilion, the Burns Family Cardiac Special Procedures Area will serve future generations seeking care at Sequoia Hospital’s Heart and Vascular Institute.

guardian angelsSequoia Hospital’s grateful patients often ask how they can thank a caregiver who made a profound impact on their care. The Foundation’s Guardian Angel program provides an opportunity for donors to honor their caregivers while giving support to patient care and programs.
The following 340 physicians, nurses, volunteers, staff members, and departments are members of the Sequoia Hospital Foundation’s Guardian Angel Registry.
Contributions of all sizes help to determine the funding Sequoia Hospital Foundation is able to provide for hospital equipment and programs, but the ties forged over time often result in the greatest impact. The Sequoia Hospital Foundation’s relationship with the Carl Gellert and Celia Berta Gellert Foundation spans nearly two decades and has resulted in gifts of more than $680,000. Gifts dramatically increased when the Gellert Foundation’s generosity inspired others to give.
Board members of the Carl Gellert and Celia Berta Gellert Foundation, including Kathy Cresci’s husband Andy, have voted to approve funding that has touched Sequoia Hospital’s Laboratory, Birth Center, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Radiation Oncology, cardiac programs, and nursing students, among others. The Gellert board’s decision in 2010 to grant $300,000 to the new Sequoia Hospital campaign was a milestone action that assures their generosity will impact every member of our community who enters Sequoia’s new Patient Pavilion for generations to come.

Gifts may be made to the Sequoia Hospital Foundation in honor or in memory of friends and loved ones. Giving in this way provides a touching tribute and a meaningful way to remember those who have impacted your life. Gifts made in these individuals’ names were received during the 2011–2012 fiscal year.
An individual’s impact is not always measured by what they are able to give financially. It may also be a factor of their contribution of time and talent. The Sequoia Hospital Foundation provides numerous opportunities for community involvement through our advisory committees, events, and strategic programs.
As a tireless advocate and ambassador for Sequoia Hospital, Kathy Cresci knew the importance of continually educating and expanding Sequoia’s family and our reach in the community. She brought those close to her to our Foundation events to learn more about Sequoia and included them in our programs whenever possible. Many in turn brought their own friends while others became volunteers and advocates themselves. Most recently, when Kathy’s husband Andy joined the Foundation’s Board of Directors, the Cresci name joined others that include Hannig, Burns, and Parcell; families with multiple members who have been elected to leadership positions and who have made Sequoia Hospital a family priority.

board of directors
The capacity for individual impact is limited only by our own imagination. Nine women in 1938 shared a vision for a community hospital in the mid-peninsula and today that hospital — Sequoia Hospital — is a 2013 HealthGrades™ America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award™ winner, according to the leading independent healthcare ratings company. In partnership with individuals like you, Sequoia impacts the lives of tens of thousands of patients each year and together we are planning today for the care of our community’s future generations.
Our friend Kathy Cresci was one of those touched by Sequoia’s care. In return, she left her own indelible mark within our halls. She shared her story, increasing awareness of the path she travelled so that others might travel the same road with comfort, dignity, and care. She led by example, inspiring others to do what they could for those in need. And when that was done, she took the time to reach out to those who had listened by picking up the telephone on behalf of the Foundation to simply offer her thanks to our donors.
I am inspired by the efforts of our hospital’s caregivers, touched by the support of our community, and humbled by the fact that Sequoia is where they choose to make their impact. It is these individuals, and those who appear on the preceding pages, that help to make Sequoia Hospital a special place.
