This is a collaborative effort of members of the Facebook INDog Club, and part of the INDog Project. We are all owners of INDogs and/or INDog-mix dogs. We often discuss our pets on the forum, so we decided to share our collective experiences to help other owners. Our aim is to put together a description of the typical temperament and behaviour traits of our native aboriginal dogs, based on our first-hand experience as owners. We hope it will be useful to new owners, trainers and anyone else interested in ‘Indies’. Though many of the described dogs are INDog-mixes with some modern breed ancestry, they often display the same traits as INDogs, presumably because those traits help in survival as free-ranging dogs. However please note that many of the traits covered are not inherited but are the result of the dog’s experiences and environment. In particular the dog’s behaviour around other dogs, children and other animals depends on the kind of exposure provided by the owner in the first months. We have added a few observations about village INDogs. Please read our INDog breed description – temperament on the next page.

Breed description of the INDog - Aditya Panda From our website www.indog.co.in Temperament It is an extremely alert, very social dog. Its rural evolution, often close to forests where predators like tigers and leopards were common, has made it an extremely cautious breed and this caution is not to be mistaken for lack of courage. They make excellent watch dogs and are very territorial and defensive of their pack/family. They need good socializing as pups and do well with families and children. However, they are not comfortable around strangers and can get defensive. They are highly intelligent and easily trainable, but can get bored equally easily and not want to play typical, repetitive dog games like ‘fetch’. Owners are frequently outsmarted by this expert of escape! They are very modest eaters and will rarely overeat. They are a very active breed and thrive with regular exercise and very long walks, several times a day. They bark at the slightest doubt or provocation and can hence be noisy.

A. Affection

1. Minna Lintu & J. Desai/Roshni & Puru - Roshni is not big on cuddling and kissing, but oh

boy does she love getting her tummy rubs and her back scratched. She will on occasion jump on a lap and allow us to hug her and kiss her, with a royal air to it, like she's doing us a favour. When sleeping however she insists on having her head on the pillow and nuzzles up close. She prefers sleeping against the back of either of us, but doesn't mind having an arm around her or under her head if the pillow isn't exactly right. Puru on the other hand is constantly looking for affection and attention and likes being cuddled. He enjoys lying on his back in a lap and getting his belly rubbed, although he is getting a bit too large for it now. Unlike Roshni he prefers to sleep at the foot end of the bed, either sprawled out or curled up behind the knees and doesn't require to be constantly touching his humans. Both of them have been taught "kissy" and that is usually the extent of licking we get from either.

Page 8: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

2. Rochelle Lucas/Kala, INDog-mix, Sydney (Kala was from Bangalore) Very affectionate. She loves pats, sitting on our laps, cuddling up against you.

3. Dominique Brand/INDog-mix LittleDog, Kolkata, now Thailand - I wouldn’t describe

Little as an affectionate dog. If there is something more interesting or rewarding he’d rather do that than come when called just for cuddles. That’s not to say that he isn’t loving or loyal. He loves being around his “pack” and really doesn’t like it if either my husband or I leave to go out and his pack is divided. When we return to the house we are greeted with such joy from him, his little curly tail wags so fast from side to side that it almost knocks his entire rear end off balance and he cannot even walk straight! He is also mouthy. I’m not sure if I should put this in the affection section. LittleDog loves to wrap his mouth round your arm, leg or whatever body part he can get to. He’s not trying to bite, although sometimes he gets carried away and it can hurt, but mostly he just has to have your hand in his mouth. He even nibbles (with teeth!) ever so gently on your ear!!! I’ve never heard of this before, don’t know whether it’s a typical Indy thing to be so mouthy, but LittleDog is for sure. I don’t want to confuse ‘mouthing’ with ‘chewing’ because Little has never, ever been a chewer, so no fear of coming home one day and finding the sofa has been ripped to shreds.

4. Nolin Chitnis/ INDog-mixes Coffee & Bruze, Thane - Aloof and reserved. Rarely do

INDogs show open affection as one might expect from breeds like Labs or Golden Retrievers. At the same time they are not to be left behind when it comes to showering licks and kisses on meeting them after a prolonged period of time.

5. Lakshmi Ravishankar/INDog-mix Puffy in Pune, Maharashtra - Strange as it may seem, Puffy is more affectionate towards my husband even though he hardly plays any role in her day to day activities. She would welcome him in the same ecstatic way whether he is returning in the evening from work or after being away for a week...my husband claims that on the occasions he is at home and I am not, Puffy is sitting watching the front door forlornly.

6. Mandi Wagner/INDog-mix Winnie - Winnie is very independent and rarely likes to cuddle.

When she is sleepy she will tolerate petting for a short time before moving away. Every once in a while she will place both paws on my shoulders and let me wrap my arms around her as if giving me a hug.

7. Amy Manoharan/INDog-mix Rex - He is affectionate with my husband and I ... when he

feels like it. Basically hes a lot like a cat. When he wants attention he comes and gets it but otherwise... he would rather sit in the sun or chew on his toys.

8. Shawna Weaver/Priya - Very affectionate and loves to cuddle with people and other

animals.

Page 9: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

9

9. Anil Tiwari, Dr Neelam Tiwari, Yash Tiwari/Jackie, Jimmy, Fluffy, Rottie, Brownie, Chottu, Vodka, Martini, Johnny, Grant, Bacardi, Sweety, Chhoti, Hyna, Maria - Jackie is very loving and caring. He is very possessive when he is near us. Does not wants any other dog to come close to us. He needs full love and care. Sweety, a 10 year-old female. Still highly active. She forces her head on our laps and wants to be belly-rubbed a lot. Jimmy wants to be patted on his back. Then will circle around us. Fluffy was the sole survivor of his litter (a car ran over the litter of five.) Since then he is a bit scared of strangers and vehicles other than our’s. Loves to be patted a lot and sits beside us on the sofa. Rottie is surely above 12 years old. He was on the streets for a long time before we adopted him. He is very well versed with human attitude. No animal lover can ignore him as he will jump on humans and ‘shake hands’ with everyone who loves him. Very caring. Choti is very loving and affectionate. She loves her belly to be rubbed. It can go on for hours together. Vodka’s hunger for love and affection is INFINITE. Hyna, Maria, Martini, Johnny, Grant, Bacardi are new puppies in our family. All loving and sit on our laps. Hyna never wants to be away from a lap.

10. Aditi Shankar/Chloe, Rocket: Chloe - very affectionate. Rocket - loves people, extremely

affectionate.

11. Pavithra Chandramowlisharan/Siva - Difficult to explain. If you define affection as liking touch and constantly requiring attention, he is definitely not affectionate. He has his own way of showing his happiness on seeing you. He welcomes my dad when he comes back from the office (lasts 2 minutes) and then goes back to his place to lounge. He is not very fond of human touch and I feel he does not like other dogs' touch either. He does not like to lick anyone. He is not warm towards strangers but he is not cold towards them either. He basically avoids people as much as possible as long as they don't bother him.

12. Amrendra Singh/Rocky - Affection towards me and my domestic help. He is very

protective and has tremendous amounts of love and affection towards us. All visitors are greeted with lots of jumps and licks all over. But people having scents of another unknown dog are dealt with caution and sometimes aggressive barking. Dogs from the street who are known to Rocky are loved by him and he is very fond of them and plays a lot.

13. Dilnaz Hiramaneck-Upadhyay/Tyson, Bruce Lee, Princess - All of them are extremely

very affectionate towards all they meet, except for Tyson, who either takes time to get friendly or directly hates the person.

14. Dr.Srilakshmi Amirtheswaran/Robin, Maya, Tehya - Very affectionate. Not as expressive

as other breeds. There is joy and eager tail-wagging but the licks and kisses are reserved for special occasions.

Page 10: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

10

15. Brittany Powell & Greg Teitelbaum/INDog-Rottweiler mix Mira - Our INDog-mix is extremely affectionate. She loves to snuggle close in bed or on the sofa and is also very friendly with newcomers and children of all ages. She will often try to sit or lay as close as possible to people and also licks and kisses a lot. She has a tendency to prefer women over men and certainly has 1 "person" or "main master" who is a woman.

16. Andy Roper/INDog-mix Vaga - Not outwardly very affectionate like some dogs are, Vaga

does make a point, however, of greeting everyone on first encounter. She hates cuddles but appreciates a good head massage and will display affection in return for that.

17. Ruth Schneider/Incredible Hope - Very sweet from the day we picked her up at the

airport, Hope was sweet gentle, however, it did take her about two to three months to get to the point of asking for attention. Now she politely insists upon it from all members of the family and is returns it willingly.

18. Randi Lildballe/INDog Otto - Otto is and has always been very affectionate. He likes to

cuddle and kiss and cries out loud if he has to sleep by himself at night. He is very group-orientated and does not like it if anybody is missing.

19. Payal Ray/Rocket - Very affectionate. I got Rocket when he was 2 months old. From

Day One he made himself comfortable and irresistible for us. Well let me warn everyone...sometimes the affection was a bit too much J

20. Neha Arora/INDogs Champ, Jebo - Champ is extremely affectionate, he is an absolute

baby and gets treated like one at home. With people he knows and trusts, he barely sets any boundaries and loves getting petted, sitting on the lap. He is very generous with his kisses/licks too. However he is extremely wary of new people and won't allow anyone to touch him till he decides that the person is acceptable. Other dog owners seem to receive extra brownie points. He also gets jealous when I/my parents pet another dog, even his closet friend Jebo Jebo is more independent, she barely tolerates affection, and is likely to get up and leave if she is not in the mood for it. Sometimes,

she does come up and demand to be petted - but this is rare (or seems rare in comparison to Champ). She comes up to gives kisses only when she is extremely happy, or you have been out the whole day. Both behaviors are partly because of their environments and partly of their inherent personalities. Champ lives with my parents and me, and has been cuddled and carried around. Jebo lives with Anoop, who gives her more space and time to be herself.

21. Elizabeth Abraham/ Angel, Blacky, Brandy, Keiko, Max, Mindy, Millie - If socialized well

during puppyhood, they are very affectionate, else, they tend to be aloof and timid.

22. Hutokshi Ichhaporia/Simba - Exremely affectionate. Loves all humans.

Page 11: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

11

23. Sharon Squires/Rupa, Bhura, Muskaan, Ravi - I find that the demands of affection from

Indian dogs are not the same as European dogs. They are more aloof. Do not need constant reassurance and praise. However, they have needs of physical presence of the owner and show loyalty in a different way.

24. Vidya & Samik Biswas/INDog-mix Grumpy - Our baby girl Grumpy is very picky when it

comes to people she showers her affection on. It is as if she's doing us a favour by doing so. For instance, when we return home each evening from work or see her after a gap of a few days during which time she spends time at the kennel, her manner of showing affection is typically characterized by some crazy galloping around, followed by some funny whining and whimpering, and some major throwing of her body weight on our bodies - irrespective of whichever part that might be - and very nearly clawing our guts out. She comes straight for us front paws extended. She trusts us to take her weight (and we do against our rather flimsy frames). But if only licking and tail-wagging can be perceived as traits of dogs showing their affection, our girl NEVER (yes, never) does either. She's very self-important, you see J

25. Caroline Walker/India - She greets friends who come to our home enthusiastically,

whimpering, seeking petting and a kiss. She curls up next to people for warmth. She enjoys being petted but other than that she doesn’t seek or give affection to the neurotic degree that some human-bred dogs do.

26. Cherida Hivale/Blackie, Mud Pack, Whitey aka Cappuccino, Skinny Goldy (female) -

Blackie is stand-offish with others, but extremely affectionate with me. Mud Pack loves cuddling, has to maintain physical contact at all times, loves being kissed and cuddled. Whitey is very affectionate, craves physical contact. Skinny Goldy is very independent and cautious at first, but loves occasional cuddling and belly rubs.

27. Mira Shihadeh/INDog Bindi - She is affectionate, but can also be irritable if you impose

your affection on her. She has to approach you first. She is four years old now, seems increasingly reserved as she gets older.

28. Colleen Doyle & Greg Hitz/INDog-Rottweiler mix Cinnamon - Cinnamon is affectionate

on her own terms. When we first got her she was reluctant to cuddle and always wanted to be moving. However she sleeps with us in bed at night and insists on cuddling up to us. In the morning she can be very sweet and nuzzle into us but once she starts her day she is ready to run.

29. Monique Nerman/Tommy Goldeneyes - Tommy is not a cuddle-loving dog, he hates

being hugged and lifted. However, he is always near me and extremely affectionate in other ways. He has learned that humans like to "kiss" and will come up and "kiss" me when he is happy. But mostly loves being scratched on his back while walking and making funny faces. He loves having contact while on our walks and communicates

Page 12: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

12

during the walks. He always wants to stay close to me. One night I woke up and he was chewing on my nails, as if cleaning them. Many times he will also lick my face or hands as if to clean me, which I take as a sign of affection.

30. Anand M N/INDog Shiro - Very affectionate.

31. Ashwini Kakkeri/Benzi, Browny, Boomer - Benzi was most affectionate, she was with us

for 15 years. She grew up with cats and was protective towards every human, child and cat. Browny was with us for 9 years; possessive, loving, a little grumpy at times…but did love the new member Boomer, like her own (after the ice-breaking!) Boomer has friends everywhere he goes. At just 2 years he sure knows how to make friends with humans and his seniors/peers and juniors J

32. Lisa Warden/Lady Penelope Chatterjee, Button Sengupta, Mr. Shakespeare Patel -

They seem more independent than the Eurobreeds I've had in the past, less interested in affection. Shakers likes to get more physical affection and more rough playing than the other two (their mother was feral, which may explain a bit of their standoffish nature). Button and Penelope like affection, especially when we return home after going out, or while we are sitting on the sofa watching TV at night (with all the dogs), but it seems that Shakers likes to get more of it than they do. Button and Penelope are also more delicate in the kind of affection they like (they're that greyhoundy, intense, delicate type), whereas Shakers is a bit more of a rough & ready, easier going type.

33. Rajvi Mariwala/INDog-mixTequila, Gumps - Tequila is very affectionate with family

members and frequent visitors. Not affectionate with strangers at all. Gumps is affectionate with family members and frequent visitors. Not affectionate with strangers.

34. Rohitangshu Das/Bush - Bush is a very well-mannered & friendly dog.

He bonded with me from the first day I adopted him. He greets me every morning with a lick and a bark. Also he shows more of his affection when he meets me after a long time and never leaves my side for long time after.

35. Manik J. Godbole/INDogs Tommy, Chinky - Tommy is an over-friendly dog with humans, no doubt about it! For Chinky i am her world. I have interacted with pedigree pet dogs, and I feel, in a way, although my INDogs love me, they are independent.

36. Ambar Kumar Gupta/PP - Highly affectionate - she was left in front of our building when she was less than ten days old. Her eyes hadn't opened! She never saw her mother. She only knew that there was a strange noise at the end of which there was a crashing sound, and familiar smelling toes would emerge from a dark place - followed by food. Within weeks she was in our flat, then in my bedroom, then in my bed...as far as she is concerned she is a Gupta, and has no time for any nasty four-legged creature she may meet on the road!

Page 13: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

13

37. Charles Twigg & family/Jake - Hesitant with me but very affectionate with the kids. He seems to like women more than men.

38. Madhu S.K./Foxy - She is very affectionate. She likes to sit close to us wherever we are. My wife is carrying and in her 7th month. Foxy loves to follow her everywhere from day one. She is protective of her mom when I am not at home/or am at work.

39. Vishakha Gangadharan/Twitches - EXTREMELY affectionate and loving towards everyone she's familiar with. Her affection is boundless and she will not rest till she has thoroughly licked your face when she meets you. Not so affectionate with strangers but after a while she will allow them to touch her.

40. Saswati Mukerji/Fudge, Charm, Minx, Rumpus, Zorro, Pebbles, Shaka, Scamp, Rudy,

Chloe, Chutki and Husky - Hugely affectionate, every one of them. They are the centre of my life, and when they greet me, or curl up next to me, I feel the centre of their lives.

41. Sarabjeet Kaur/Angel - Not very expressive

42. Ramya Bala/Sandy - Sandy is a very affectionate dog, always wagging his tail and has a

happy face on 24/7. He snuggles into our laps when we sit down! And he is talker, not barker but actually keep a conversation going with you where you ask him something and pause and he answers and after he finishes, you can ask him the next question. He is big bundle of love!

43. Tina Carver D’Souza/Raju & Deepa - Male Raju - very affectionate since a pup. Raju

loves to be held. Smiles and loves belly rubs. Female Deepa - Wanted to be left alone as a pup. She now wants attention but can't settle down enough to get it. She jumps and claws, refuses to be held or restrained. Deepa is very hyper! Deepa loves Raju. The only sweet thing she does is clean Raju’s ears…So gently! Deepa hates it when Raju jumps the wall and leaves the compound. She even gives him a firing when he returns!

44. Lalitprabha Jadhav & Vidhyut Kargutkar/Perky, Kolaveri - I would describe Perky as

very affectionate and caring. She is also very considerate and understanding. Kolaveri is also loving but very impatient and can get a little rough in expressing love.

45. Rajashree Khalap/Kiba, Kimaya - Kiba is not clingy and doesn’t need to be close to us

all the time, though he likes to cuddle up near us at night. Though not always demonstrative he’s very affectionate in his own way and always ecstatic when we return home from even a short trip. Kimaya is very attached to me and usually stays in the same room as me. She loves cuddling and attention.

46. Aditya Panda/Robin - Extremely high

Page 14: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

14

B. Bonding to owners and family

1. Minna Lintu & J. Desai/Roshni & Puru - Very well bonded and neither likes one of us (or heaven forbid, both of us!) going out. One of us going out results in nervous restlessness, trotting back and forth, crying, howling and in general the feel that they have been abandoned for life. We have yet to see what happens if both of us go out at the same time... Their exuberant joy when the missing person returns is even louder than their misery for them being gone and a lot of howling, tail-wagging, bouncing and prancing commences. 2. Rochelle Lucas/INDog Kala - Very high. Kala is very loyal and likes it when her “pack” is together. She prefers spending time with us and does not like being left for long periods by herself.

Page 15: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

15

3. Nolin Chitnis/ INDog-mixes Coffee & Bruze - Very attached. Normally bond to a single individual very strongly. 5. Lakshmi Ravishankar/INDog-mix Puffy - Very strong. Now limited only to me and Ravi. When my father-in-law was with us, with him, too. 6. Mandi Wagner/INDog-mix Winnie - Winnie is strongly bonded to my husband and I, and has some separation anxiety when I, mommy, am away from her. 7. Amy Manoharan/INDog-mix Rex - When he first arrived he was VERY VERY fearful and skittish. He’s less so now but it took almost a year for him to settle in with us. Being on the farm helped a lot but he’s definitely my husband’s dog and not mine. He adores my husband and gets depressed with hubby leaves for work. 8. Shawna Weaver/Priya - Quickly and strongly bonded. 9. Anil Tiwari ,Dr Neelam Tewari & Yash Tewari/…: Caring, love to be always along us. 10. Aditi Shankar/Chloe, Rocket - Chloe bonds well with women, takes a while to bond with men. Rocket bonds eagerly and well with all members. 11. Pavithra Chandramowlisharan/Siva - Siva is extremely affectionate towards my father and a bit less affectionate towards my mother. My father likes to be very physical with Siva e.g. petting him, kissing him, playfully hitting him etc whereas my mother prefers to just pat him and give him food. Shiva's favorite thing in the world is to ride in cars and since my dad drives him everywhere in his car, he has bonded most with my dad. He likes other family members as in he does not bark at them and is not insecure around them. 12. Amrendra Singh/Rocky - Very strong bonding with the family. My parents come and visit me from time to time and it's amazing to see that Rocky recognizes them as if he knew who they were and always wants to be in their company. My parents love him and he gives the love back multiplied into infinity. 13. Dilnaz Hiramaneck-Upadhyay/Tyson, Bruce Lee, Princess - They are all well bonded to everyone within the family as well as our friends circle. 14. Dr.Srilakshmi Amirtheswaran/Robin, Maya, Tehya - Extremely well bonded to me and my family. 15. Brittany Powell and Greg Teitelbaum/Mira - Mira has bonded closely to one person who is a woman but is also very close with other household members. She is extremely playful and loves children of all ages. She will chase and wrestle and sometimes gives "love bites" or soft nibbles on hands while playing. At times she has shown a tendency to be jealous if her "person" is directing affection to another person or animal but that has started to wane.

Page 16: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

16

16. Andy Roper/Vaga - Very strong bonding 17. Ruth Schneider/Incredible Hope - We find that Hope is extremely loyal to our family members. Walking, sitting and lying beside her people at every chance. She will watch us and anticipate our routines, taking a roll in most everything we do. She is the same with our other dog, a rescue from Georgia, USA. They lie next to each other when their humans are busy. 18. Randi Lildballe/Otto - The bond is close but at the same time we have alway called him "the-one-you’re-with dog". By this we mean that whenever we have travelled and our family or friends have taken care of Otto he has bonded very much with the people taking care of him and even though he seems like he has missed us he will be very depressed when they leave. 19. Payal Ray/Rocket - Bonding was pretty much immediate. Initially I think they bond best with the person who is feeding them.

Page 17: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

17

20. Neha Arora/Champ & Jebo - Both dogs are extremely fond of my family and Anoop. Champ is more expressive, and Jebo is less so, but it is very evident that they are very well-bonded. Even off-leash, while they are likely to make you chase them, they make sure that you are always within sight. 21. Elizabeth Abraham/Angel, Blacky, Brandy, Keiko, Max, Mindy, Millie, Parsley - Bonding very well. Too well, maybe. Moderate to high degree of separation distress. 22. Hutokshi Ichhaporia/Simba - Bonding good. 23. Sharon Squires/Rupa, Bhura, Muskaan, Ravi - When I get a new dog including puppies again, I see they go slower. They need longer to adjust and must bond over time. People are not interchangeable to them. They need to get to know us. Simple petting and affection doesn't really grab them at first. 24. Vidya & Samik Biswas/Grumpy - Grumpy is very, very attached to mommy. Daddy says she is more attached to mommy than she is to daddy. But mommy thinks she loves daddy more simply because he indulges her more than mommy does. And also does this fantastic job of pacifying her when she's given a thorough dressing-down by mommy for doing something really naughty and avoidable. Is extremely protective of mommy and daddy though. In a crowd, she seeks solace in being with both mom and dad. Especially so when mom-dad are desperately trying to squeeze in some romance in their otherwise hectic lives over the weekend in front of the TV on the couch or early weekend mornings with mugs of tea. J She knows precisely whom to approach for foods of her choice. For eg: any non-vegetarian food items: daddy. For curds ,its mommy. She doesn’t let anyone come near mommy to shake hands or say hello unless she approves of that person. Grrr! 25. Caroline Walker/India - She is extremely bonded to me (the sole owner). Even when she is having fun with or getting treats from others she stays loyal to me...and has exhibited this by coming over to sit near me during human to human arguments etc. 26. Cherida Hivale/Blackie, Mud Pack, Whitey, Skinny Goldy - Blackie is very loyal and protective of family members, but tolerates care-giving from only me. Mud Pack is a big baby to everybody at home - loves cuddling and sleeping with whoever gives him the most attention. Sulks if he doesn't get maximum attention. Whitey is friendly with everyone but has very clear boundaries, prefers to be left alone when asleep - more of a one-woman dog, this one. Skinny Goldy is extremely cautious and nervous around everyone except me - she was much older when adopted, perhaps that's why. 27. Mira Shihadeh/Bindi - She seems well bonded to me, the owner.

Page 18: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

18

28. Colleen Doyle and Greg Hitz/Cinnamon - She is very attached to us. She follows us to every room of the house and insists on being near us (but not too close or we may cuddle her). She is happiest when we are all together playing. 29. Monique Nerman/Tommy Goldeneyes - Quite needy and needs to be close to me or be able to see me all the time. Will be checking out what I do, but not nosy. Very quiet in the home. Caring. Very happy when we meet friends. 30. Anand M N/Shiro - Loves all. 31. Ashwini Kakkeri/Benzi, Browny and Boomer - Benzi: I considered her my sibling... she was that caring and bonded with that much love not only to me but with everyone in the family. Browny: Brat of the house...she was the possesive kind. Boomer: the new brat of the house... he loooooves everyone, and is part of our hearts J 32. Lisa Warden/Lady Penelope Chatterjee, Button Sengupta,Mr. Shakespeare Patel - They're all very bonded to us but, as I said, they don't seem as needy as previous Eurobreeds and mixes we've had - a bit more like cats than dogs. 33. Rajvi Mariwala/Tequila, Gumps - Tequila: well bonded to owners and family. Enjoys the company of people inside the house. Gumps: well bonded to the owners and family. 34. Rohitangshu Das/Bush - Bush bonded easily with my father & mother & other family members but when it comes to heeding commands, he generally listen and obeys my commands instantly. But his affection is equal for all the family members. 35. Manik J. Godbole/Tommy, Chinky - Tommy bonds with people in general, anyone who calls him with love, he becomes his or her dog!! To the extent that he went to a friend’s place and stayed overnight, without missing me a bit! He loves my father, although my father doesn’t much interact with him, and gives my mother company when she is alone in the house. Chinky loves me more than anyone else, and is attached to me more. There is a reason for this though: I’ve known her since she was just 2 days old. She loves my parents but wouldn’t be that interactive as Tommy, maybe because she spent almost a year on the streets before adoption. 36. Ambar Kumar Gupta/PP - She is a Gupta and used to being the centre of attention. She always has to have someone in the flat with her, otherwise she is in the verandah howling. Our only holiday away from her in December was ruined by her anxiety attacks. My son staying back to look after her could not soothe her, so my wife had to talk to her daily over the speaker phone!! 37. Charles Twigg & family/Jake - Very cautious and flighty. 38. Madhu S.K./Foxy - Great bonding. She knows our routines. She still gets confused as to who is the boss (me/my wife). She sometimes thinks I am a toy to play with when I get back

Page 19: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

19

home! Very protective of her mom. Goes to her whenever in trouble. Friendly with all family & friends. Loves to talk to even the sweepers on the road, vegetable vendors! 39. Vishakha Gangadharan/Twitches - Least independent dog I have ever come across. ABSOLUTELY NEEDS her humans. She will not be comfortable without them. She has a very strong bond with everyone that I consider important in my life. 40. Saswati Mukerji/Fudge, Charm, Minx, Rumpus, Zorro, Pebbles, Shaka, Scamp, Rudy, Chloe, Chutki and Husky - Bonded completely, and very protective. a couple of them stroke our faces when they sense we are upset. 41. Sarabjeet Kaur/Angel - Strong. 42. Ramya Bala/Sandy - He loves my grandmother who is his primary owner but bonds really well with us (my parents, sister and I) whenever we visit our grandmother on our vacations. It seems to me that he really looks forward to us visiting, He loves our company as we love his! 43. Tina Carver D’Souza/Raju & Deepa - Both dogs are very protective of both me and my husband. They are both more affectionate with Mommy. 44. Lalitprabha Jadhav & Vidhyut Kargutkar/Perky, Kolaveri - Very high. Perky has a pack mentality especially loyal towards the alpha dog of the house (as she sees her) my mother! Kolaveri is loyal towards both me and my mother. She is truly buddies with me. 45. Rajashree Khalap/Kiba, Kimaya - Very high 46. Aditya Panda/Robin - Extremely high to owner; average to the rest of the family

C. Behaviour with strangers

1. Minna Lintu & J. Desai/Roshni & Puru - Affection towards non-family members is non-existent in Roshni, she would prefer everyone else in the world to just go away and leave her alone. If a stranger is at the door, Roshni has to be physically held by her nose to prevent the visitor becoming deaf as she will not stop barking until they are gone - even then she clucks suspiciously for a couple of minutes. However, the few times we have taken her to the market she has been on very good behaviour and didn't even make a fuss over a shop attendant holding her leash while both of us went inside. She is a touch nervous of people while on the leash, but nothing compared to when she is off it and at home. Puru is excited to meet everyone and is fortunately not taking cues from Roshni in how to behave with strangers. He greets everyone with equal happiness - after the initial barks to alert of a stranger. 2. Rochelle Lucas/Kala: Very high. Kala is very loyal and likes it when her “pack” is together.

She prefers spending time with us and does not like being left for long periods by herself. 3. Dominique Brand/LittleDog: LittleDog loves everybody. He want to speak to everybody and be best friends. 4. Nolin Chitnis/Coffee & Bruze - Alert, suspicious and need to be handled with

Page 21: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

21

caution. Owners need to be alert for signs of trouble. 5. Lakshmi Ravishankar/Puffy - Very edgy. Doesn't trust anybody. If anybody tried to touch her, she would give a warning growl. 6. Mandi Wagner/Winnie - Winnie is extremely wary of strangers and does not interact well with them when they come into her territory, i.e. house, walk route, yard. She is not aggressive, but growls and barks along with raising her fur between her shoulder blades. 7. Amy Manoharan/Rex - Nervous and territorial at first. He barks A LOT at people he doesn't know which isn't a good thing as people come over almost every day to buy chicken eggs from us. After about a half hour with someone he will calm down and want to play with them. He is by his nature very alert to intruders and will bark ferociously if he thinks someone’s there that shouldn't be. 8. Shawna Weaver/Priya - Barked at first to unfamiliar noises such as knocking at the door. Quit doing so after a couple weeks. 9. Anil Tiwari ,Dr Neelam Tewari & Yash Tewari/Jackie, Jimmy, Fluffy, Rottie, Brownie, Chottu, Vodka, Martini, Johnny, Grant, Bacardi, Sweety, Chhoti, Hyna, Maria - Jackie, Rottie, Brownie, Chhoti, Vodka are easy going with strangers. Yes initially they will bark and warn us. If we accept the stranger then they will sniff them all, BUT never leave us alone with strangers. Rottie and Jackie will be within 4-6 feet ALWAYS while the stranger is there. 10. Aditi Shankar/Chloe, Rocket - Chloe - very apprehensive. Is more welcoming of strangers at home. Rocket - is a little apprehensive when on the leash or in an open area. 11. Pavithra Chandramowlisharan/Siva - Shiva still is not familiar with our tenants living upstairs and downstairs. He barks every time they come into his vicinity. However, he is pretty warm towards strangers, as in he does not care about them. He will not bark nor will be friendly with them. We find it very convenient to take him when we visit people’s homes. He will survey their house and will settle in a corner. 12. Amrendra Singh/Rocky - If someone comes or knocks at the gate he is very cautious and very protective. If some stranger owns a dog and has the scent of their dog then he becomes very attentive and wants to smell the person vigorously. He starts barking only at some people. He hasn't bitten anyone but those who don’t know him well fear him as he is a strong dog with a very deep and commanding voice. 13. Dilnaz Hiramaneck-Upadhyay/Tyson, Bruce Lee, Princess - Very cautious around strangers. Since I walk them by myself, Bruce is very protective in particular about who comes close to us/me.

Page 22: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

22

14. Dr.Srilakshmi Amirtheswaran/Robin, Maya, Tehya - The male is more cautious and observant. He keeps his distance and is jumpy around strangers. He barks up a storm and growls when approached. The girls bark initially but are very friendly. 15. Brittany Powell and Greg Teitelbaum/Mira - Mira is receptive to most strangers. We find that someone wearing a hat is not well received, but she is friendly and welcoming to strangers and visitors without a hat or hoodie. She will greet them by sitting and "begging" for petting or by running in little circles near them and around the room. She is also hesitant toward people with deep, scratchy voices. If we are out somewhere and a person approaches loudly she is sometimes hesitant toward them as well. Overall, she loves people and is very receptive to a new friend. 16. Andy Roper/Vaga - Polite and then indifferent 17. Ruth Schneider/Incredible Hope - Hope is gentle and respectful of strangers and will wait to be petted. She is accepting of affection, but does not stray from her family members. 18. Randi Lildballe/Otto - Otto is very aware of strangers and does not like them BUT strangers can at the same time become his best friends within a short period of 30 minutes! He is often a little nervous around men but if they are friendly he will often show affection within a short period. 19. Payal Ray/Rocket - Since many Indies start as street dogs, they seem to befriend anyone. But as they become "domesticated", they understand the difference between strangers and known people. 20. Neha Arora/Champ & Jebo - Champ is very wary of new people, however there has been a huge improvement since the time we got him. Initially he would hide in a corner or move away from the path if people were walking on to him. He is still cautious of new people but his behavior is less stressed. All new people are greeted with very loud barks at home. Jebo is not afraid of new people, but on the other hand is still cautious of them. She will go sniffing up to some new people but will shy away from them if they approach her. She does not like to be touched by any person who is not in her immediate circle of humans. 21. Elizabeth Abraham/Angel, Blacky, Brandy, Keiko, Max, Mindy, Millie, Parsley - Depending on early socialization, very well...friendly, outgoing, and amiable. 22. Hutokshi Ichhaporia/Simba - Shows affection and welcomes all well-dressed guests. Is wary at first with others but accepts them fairly quickly. 23. Sharon Squires/Rupa, Bhura, Muskaan, Ravi - Except for Bhura, my four Indies are aloof with strangers. Very polite but totally ignore them. Bhura will greet visitors he knows. The others do not.

Page 23: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

23

24. Vidya & Samik Biswas/Grumpy - Grumpy has a severe dislike of men. She is quite all right with ladies, but can clearly sniff nervous people from a mile away. Nervous women who talk too much and hesitate are a strict no-no for her. 25. Caroline Walker/India - She is friendly and docile toward strangers unless she senses fear or some type of odd energy from them. In those cases she growls or barks. She can also sense if I am fearful of someone and then responds protectively. 26. Cherida Hivale/Blackie, Mud Pack, Whitey, Skinny Goldy - Blackie is very ferocious and territorial with strange males. Mud Pack is wary but friendly if shown affection. Whitey is wary and cautiously friendly. Seems to intensely dislike women of the labour class - has some traumatic history there. Skinny Goldy is wary and fearful around strange men, curious about women but less fearful. One trait they all seem to have in common is a display of aggression around most men of the labour class - especially those who are disheveled and have poor hygiene. 27. Mira Shihadeh/Bindi - Very friendly with strangers, unless they are fearful, in which case she is very sensitive to this and may even growl at them so they do not get closer. 28. Colleen Doyle and Greg Hitz/Cinnamon - She loves women and will run right up to them. She pees when excited very annoying and often pees when she meets girls. 29. Monique Nerman/Tommy Goldeneyes - Does not take treats from strangers. Very friendly, but cautious. Loves walking behind strangers and smelling them. When in a pack can sometimes love chasing joggers. Will keep some distance unless I say it's OK. In his Therapy Dog work he will be very friendly when I say "Go say Hi". Loves old people. As a young dog in India he would make himself very cute and wag his tail at tourists who bought food at the shack, instead of staring and begging - I noticed this trick of his worked quite well as someone would always throw him some food. 30. Anand M N/Shiro - Once with the owner, she is usually fine with strangers. There are exceptions. 31. Ashwini Kakkeri/Benzi, Browny and Boomer - People wanted to have kids like Benzi. She never barked at anyone. Very loving. Browny had a tough exterior but never hurt anyone. All the kids in the apartment building were her friends. Boomer: What can I say. People who meet him want to adopt a dog J 32. Lisa Warden/Lady Penelope Chatterjee, Button Sengupta,Mr. Shakespeare Patel - They all bark like crazy when strangers appear (when they're in the house). If the strangers come in, Shakers will charge up to investigate, which scares non-dog people, so I normally put him in another room. Button and Penelope have been afraid of strangers since a certain point in Ahmedabad when we went away on a trip and the security guards in our neighborhood came into the garden and beat them. Since then, they've been terrified of people, which is a real

Page 24: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

24

downer, and can be difficult to manage while out on walks. If a doggy friend comes to stay with us, it can take a few days before they warm up to her. Shakers is fine with everyone. 33. Rajvi Mariwala/Tequila, Gumps - Tequila is extremely fearful of strangers. Does not like being in close proximity with strangers and will growl to keep people away if they get too close. Will not allow herself to be touched by strangers. Gumps was quite fearful of strangers. Would attempt to increase distance between strangers and himself but even if forced was very stable and did not react to any handling. 34. Rohitangshu Das/Bush - Bush normally sniffs any visiting stranger first and if he finds them suspicious, he barks. But he has never attacked any stranger. 35. Manik J. Godbole/Tommy, Chinky - Tommy will first bark at any unknown person, go near that person, sniff him and unless the person threatens him, he will wag his tail saying 'be my friend.' If the person is a real threat he will bark more aggressively, fur all standing in rage, but never bite, and will look at me, as if asking ‘what should I do with this person!’ Normally I shoo him away from the person. Chinky will first and foremost growl, then bark, then go near the person, sniff and retreat, go to her safest place and keep growling till threat disappears. She believes discretion is the better part of valour. If the person has dog scents which she assumes to be friendly scents, she will (after sniffing and confirmation) wag her tail, rub her body against the person, sometimes leap forward to lick. 36. Ambar Kumar Gupta/PP - She loves men, the stinkier the better! Suspicious of most women. Once she is introduced she's quite friendly, sometimes overwhelmingly so! 37. Charles Twigg & family/Jake - No way... run and hide. Maybe a threatening bark before peeing all over. 38. Madhu S.K./Foxy - If any stranger comes, she waits for our cue. She observes the way we speak/invite them into the house. Gets a little hyper and jumps all around once she gets to know they are guests. With strangers whom we interact standing outside, she guards and growls! 39. Vishakha Gangadharan/Twitches - Getting better. Takes a while to warm up to them. Since she's so young I'm pretty sure she will eventually greet everyone warmly. She has learned not to bark at them and will approach them on her will. Does not take well to being "pounced on" by people she doesn’t know. 40. Saswati Mukerji/Fudge, Charm, Minx, Rumpus, Zorro, Pebbles, Shaka, Scamp, Rudy, Chloe, Chutki and Husky - Bark a lot, but no physical aggression. However alerts us immediately when strangers come to the door. And when 10 dogs line up to vet someone, it’s quite an experience! 41. Sarabjeet Kaur/Angel - Comfortable with women. Very uncomfortable with men. Backs off if a stranger(man) tries to come close even if affectionately. At home seems ok with strangers,

Page 25: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

25

even men, if she believes they're friends of mine. Barks at men who come home for work (plumber, electrician etc) 42. Ramya Bala/Sandy - He is cautious with strangers. He barks whenever there's anybody at the gate/door. But he has never bitten anyone till date. But he has a friendly demeanour if he sees us being friendly with the stranger. 43. Tina Carver D’Souza/Raju & Deepa - Male Raju- quiet and cool but very protective of the family. Raju becomes jealous if a stranger (outside the compound) raises a hand to say hello! Raju has nipped two people. The first was an old woman who waved hello. The second was a child running with other boys outside the gate. Raju jumps the wall to chase a threat. Female Deepa is fine if she knows we are allowing the person inside the compound. Deepa has never bitten. But she barks at everyone and tells Raju who to chase. 44. Lalitprabha Jadhav & Vidhyut Kargutkar/Perky, Kolaveri - Perky can be very friendly with strangers till she hears the tone of our voice change to angry/distressed, which makes her bark at them. Kolaveri is very suspicious of strangers but prefers company of men/boys for some reason rather than women/girls. 45. Rajashree Khalap/Kiba, Kimaya - Cautious and wary. Outside the house they don’t allow strangers to touch them. At home they bark at most visitors to begin with, but after that may either ignore the visitor or become extremely friendly. They are a little more suspicious of strange men than women.

46. Aditya Panda/Robin - Highly suspicious, unfriendly initially. Tolerant/friendly, yet suspicious after introduction.

D. Behaviour with children

1. Rochelle Lucas/Kala - Very good with children. Kala is very calm, she is loves spending time with kids and is good with both kids that she is familiar with, as well as those that she has never met. She does not jump and so children who are frightened of dogs, find her easy to

approach and get used to.

2. Dominique Brand/LittleDog - Loves everybody. Wants to speak to everybody and be best friends. 3. Nolin Chitnis/Coffee & Bruze - My experience has been not very good. Rough even when in a playful mood. 4. Lakshmi Ravishankar/Puffy - Again very unfriendly. She wants to be as far away as possible from running shrieking children. She generally doesn't like it when people/children are in a group.

Page 27: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

27

5. Mandi Wagner/Winnie - Winnie is well behaved with children but treats them like any other stranger initially. Once she warms up to them, she will playfully nip at their pant legs in an attempt to get them to play. Also, she is extremely gentle and patient. A child's quick jerky movement may frighten her if she is not paying attention. 6. Amy Manoharan/Rex - He’s okay with kids but like a 2 year old lab would be...He tends to not know his own strength and plays too rough. At this point he’s not allowed to play with kids because I don't want my customers to see their kids get knocked down. Rex doesn't want to hurt them, and I can tell that he wants to play but he thinks that means doing 'run by knock downs' then running off before we can catch him. 7. Shawna Weaver/Priya - Bonded as with adults. 8. Anil Tiwari ,Dr Neelam Tewari & Yash Tewari/Jackie, Jimmy, Fluffy, Rottie, Brownie, Chottu, Vodka, Martini, Johnny, Grant, Bacardi, Sweety, Chhoti, Hyna, Maria - Children are fun for them. They all jump, run, play with children. Never any issue with children. 9. Aditi Shankar/Chloe, Rocket - Both are wary around children, they have not had too many interactions with kids. 10. Pavithra Chandramowlisharan/Shiva - Shiva is extremely gentle with children. He has lived in a housing complex full of small kids and even babies (2 year old). The babies and toddlers pull his ears and jump on him and what not, but nothing perturbs Shiva. He does not lick the babies either, which makes him the parents' favorite. The only time I remember him being angry was when this 2 year old baby stepped on his tail and he gave a loud bark. He has never bitten anyone till date. He does not like anyone sitting on his back, who does? 11. Amrendra Singh/Rocky - Very friendly with children and always wants to jump and run around and play with them. He loves playing fetch and tug-of-war with anything he can get his paws on like cleaning cloths, dusters, ropes etc. 12. Dilnaz Hiramaneck-Upadhyay/Tyson, Bruce Lee, Princess - Tyson is not too fond of children since he has a low level of tolerance, but the others are good with them. 13. Dr.Srilakshmi Amirtheswaran/Robin, Maya, Tehya - The male does not like children. He growls or barks and moves away from touch. The girls like children. They enjoy playing. 14. Brittany Powell and Greg Teitelbaum/Mira - Mira likes to play with children and loves to hear them laugh and squeal. She will chase them or jump playfully to engage them. With smaller children this can sometimes be problematic at first. She will often bring a toy for our young cousin to throw so she can chase it. She has also done well when her "person" directs attention to children and infants. She has not shown any jealousy when her "person" is engaged with young children.

Page 28: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

28

15. Andy Roper/Vaga - Ignores them. Tolerant to a degree but will growl and give a warning bark if kids don't leave her alone. 16. Ruth Schneider/Incredible Hope - Hope was rescued from a construction site in New Delhi just weeks after giving birth to her litter. The fact that she cared for her pups is apparent around our grandchildren, one 3 years and one 8 months. She is responsive, kind and very gentle. It is apparent that she has transferred her role of motherhood over to our human children. 17. Randi Lildballe/Otto - He simply loves children! He just wants to kiss them all the time.

18. Payal Ray/Rocket - Rocket was 4 years old when our daughter Pari was born. His first reaction on seeing her was very surprising. I was expecting him to bark - but instead he started crying! I was shocked and really did not know what to do. It took around 2 hours to pacify him. After that, Rocket was my assistant and nanny! He would just lie next to the cot and let me know if Pari woke up! Till date, he has been the most loving, caring and TOLERANT brother anyone can have! Despite continuous hugs even when he is sleeping, he will never snap at her. 19. Neha Arora/Champ & Jebo - Champ: He is the same with all people, regardless of age. He is no threat to them, but would rather not play with them. He hasn't known any kid for a decent amount of time. This behavior may change if a kid spends a good amount of time around him and earns his trust. Jebo is curious about some kids, but would rather watch them from afar. Again, there have been very limited interactions with children.

Page 29: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

29

20. Elizabeth Abraham/Angel, Blacky, Brandy, Keiko, Max, Mindy, Millie, Parsley - Tolerant, again depending on early socialization and proper introduction. 21. Hutokshi Ichhaporia/Simba - Fond of children. 22. Sharon Squires/Rupa, Bhura, Muskaan, Ravi - All the Indies love my older kids. Very very protective of my son Seth who is 15 years old. The protective instinct means I must be watchful. She doesn't get it that the kids are just playing rough. 23. Vidya & Samik Biswas/Grumpy - A DEFINITE NO. She was on the streets for 3 months before we took her in and we attribute her dislike for kids to the kids who used to tease and irritate her (albeit affectionately) on the road. 24. Caroline Walker/India - At age 7 I was happy to see India bond with a 5 year old neighbour boy. They are crazy about each other! India was not socialized with children prior to this. Children that she interacted with on the street or in parks made her nervous. I taught her to sit when children approached and to let them pet her as I thought it was important for kids to have a positive experience with dogs. She was never comfortable doing this though. 25. Cherida Hivale/Blackie, Mud Pack, Whitey, Skinny Goldy - Blackie prefers to stay away. Mud Pack is very playful and affectionate. Whitey is wary and suspicious. Skinny Goldy is fearful. 26. Mira Shihadeh/Bindi - Very gentle with children, but even then, there are limits if they get too friendly. 27. Colleen Doyle and Greg Hitz/Cinnamon - Not a lot of input here but the children she has met for brief periods of time she has been great with. 28. Monique Nerman/Tommy Goldeneyes - Very friendly and safe, but cautious. 29. Anand M N/Shiro - Mostly friendly. There are exceptions. 30. Ashwini Kakkeri/Benzi, Browny and Boomer - Benzi was gentle...she knew kids better than I do. Browny: She was the most patient of the three. Boomer: This guy wants to play with every kid he sees! 31. Lisa Warden/Lady Penelope Chatterjee, Button Sengupta,Mr. Shakespeare Patel - Button and Penelope are afraid of everyone. Shakers gets really excited with kids who express an interest in him, and in his zeal can overwhelm the kids. 32. Rajvi Mariwala/Tequila, Gumps - Tequila is very fearful of children. Dislikes any screaming and high-pitched sounds. Not a child-friendly dog. Gumps was stable, kept his distance but wouldn’t react in any way.

Page 30: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

30

33. Rohitangshu Das/Bush - Bush understands the space to be given to children. That was demonstrated when my niece approached him in her "walker". Bush quietly got up and moved to a different location only to be pursued again by my niece. 34. Manik J. Godbole/Tommy, Chinky - Chinky is very protective of my nephew, like to sleep beside him, allows him to touch her anywhere, accepts treats from him gently. But she is not so friendly with other children and doesn’t allow them to touch her. Tommy is okay with my nephew, but sometimes takes him for his competitor. Specially if my sister or I are showing affection to Tommy, my nephew is not allowed by Tommy to come near us. He likes to chase kids running, or even barks at kids on road to scare them. 35. Ambar Kumar Gupta/PP - Initial sniffing. Several students who come to the flat for private coaching have their left hands continually occupied stroking her - any cessation brings up a pleading paw! 36. Charles Twigg & family/Jake - Amazing!! 37. Madhu S.K./Foxy - Loves children. Does not like loud noises/screaming from kids. She does not attack them but barks/protests to stop them making loud noises. Observed that the crying of the neighbour’s 6 month baby upsets and irritates Foxy and she barks a couple of times & then settles down when we tell her to relax! Well, she is on her way to preparing to welcome a new member to our family. 38. Vishakha Gangadharan/Twitches - AMAZING. She actually surprised me there. Gentle with them. She never barks or jumps on any child that has entered my house and let's them touch her even if they are strangers. And no I never tried to make her like them. She is a natural when it comes to kids. I have never let a child pull her ears and mistreat her though; so I don't know how she would react to that. 39. Saswati Mukerji/Fudge, Charm, Minx, Rumpus, Zorro, Pebbles, Shaka, Scamp, Rudy, Chloe, Chutki and Husky - Inquisitive, will sniff and then settle down and want to be petted. 40. Sarabjeet Kaur/Angel - Tolerant. 41. Ramya Bala/Sandy - We don't have any infants but have young nieces and nephews (as young as 3 years old) who come visiting and he is ever so patient and well behaved around them. He is usually a very active, energetic dog but somehow he always knows not to charge his usual energy at kids! 42. Tina Carver D’Souza/Raju, Deepa - Male Raju - While he has bit a child on the road who was up to mischief, he is a regal guard dog sitting so sweetly beside my 4 year old niece. He looks like her little soldier. We can't pull him away from her. She loves to pet him and show attention. With older children who are taller and moving faster he behaves like a border collie.

Page 31: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

Female Deepa - Avoids children. She won’t hurt them. She runs from them unless they are running on the road outside the compound. She can’t jump out of the compound, but she gives them a scare with her bark. 43. Lalitprabha Jadhav & Vidhyut Kargutkar/Perky, Kolaveri - Perky is very friendly with children and cautious. Kolaveri is full of energy and scares kids with her jumping, barking. 44. Rajashree Khalap/Kiba, Kimaya - They haven’t interacted with many children as the kids in our building society are mostly scared of animals and I keep my dogs away from them. They are very calm and patient with my caretaker’s young son. 45. Aditya Panda/Robin - Highly tolerant if introduced early to a child in the family. Impatient and low tolerance otherwise. 46. Minna Lintu/Roshni – Neither Roshni nor Puru have actual experience of children, but visiting pre-teens (for some english tuitions) in the house have been eyed carefully by Roshni and every movement caused barking during the first visits. Puru had not been born yet at the time.

E. Intelligence

1. Minna Lintu & J. Desai/Roshni & Puru – High. Especially Roshni requires some out-of-the-box thinking to "train" her, but she picks up things very quickly once we figure out the how. Puru is motivated by food and has shown very interesting and quite ingenious ways of getting treats. I would say both are highly intelligent, but their independence makes them a slight challenge to train if you are looking for an obedience trained dog. Tricks however can be easily taught.

2. Rochelle Lucas/Kala - High

3. Dominique Brand/LittleDog - He is one smart doggie. Bright as a button we would say in the UK. This is great in one way because he is super easy to train. He can learn a new obedience skill or trick within 10 minutes. And then remember it the next day! His memory is incredible. We have seen this with travelling. We can visit a new restaurant one day, and return to it a few days later, he will remember the precise table we sat at! When we change hotels frequently, it is sometimes difficult for him to remember where our room was. So he sniffs his way past each door to see if it "smells" like our room...that seems to be problem solving to me! The downside of having a super smart doggie is that he will get bored very easily. He needs his brain as well as his body to be used.

Page 33: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

33

4. Nolin Chitnis/Coffee & Bruze - Highly intelligent. Can pick up words and associations very fast. Also learn to look for clues and signs in body language, tone etc regarding what’s in store or what’s coming next for them. 5. Lakshmi Ravishankar/Puffy - Pretty good. For example, she can figure out the shortest route from point A to point B. When she brings the ball to me, she is clever enough to avert her face to make it difficult for me to take the ball from her grip. 6. Mandi Wagner/Winnie - Winnie seems to be thinking every time I look at her. You can tell when she's trying to solve a problem. She's extremely smart and training is a breeze as long as she is not distracted. She learned 'paw' in less than 2 minutes. 7. Amy Manoharan/Rex - One word: EXTREME. He is by FAR the smartest dog I have ever owned...to the point that he can get out of any crate/cage, unlock any door, and manage to get into unbelievable trouble. He knows around 50 commands...doesn't mean that he actually does what I tell him to do though. Like a cat, he does it when he feels like it. 8. Shawna Weaver/Priya - Smartest dog I had ever worked with. Understood mirrors - examined herself in the mirror several times a day. 9. Anil Tiwari ,Dr Neelam Tewari & Yash Tewari/Jackie, Jimmy, Fluffy, Rottie, Brownie, Chottu, Vodka, Martini, Johnny, Grant, Bacardi, Sweety, Chhoti, Hyna, Maria - They are highly intelligent, as evolved to survive on the fringes of human civilization. They understand most commands by seeing our eyes and body language. 10. Aditi Shankar/Chloe, Rocket - Chloe - high intelligence. Rocket - extremely intuitive. Understands what is expected of him, though may not necessarily agree. 11. Pavithra Chandramowlisharan/Shiva - Shiva is very astute. He observes very well. He knows exactly when we are calling him for going somewhere and when we are ‘mock’ calling him. When my dad wears his dhothi, he knows he is not going out but when my dad wears his trousers and shirt, he knows very well that a car trip is waiting for him. He can associate the jingling of keys with going out. Also, when my parents go out in their 2 wheeler, he knows very well that he will not be taken with them, so he silently goes back into the house. Whereas when they take out the car, he will chase it until they take him also. Only drawback is he topples all his food when he is not hungry without understanding that the food will still be there even if he is not hungry so that he can eat it later. 12. Amrendra Singh/Rocky - Highly intelligent species. His memory is amazing. If a cat ever passed through my courtyard even once, he would now and then go there to inspect. It’s like he can read minds and if I'm in a happy mood he will be playful and if I'm in not in a good mood then he would try to make me feel better by showing deep affection. Knows where he has kept his toys. When wanting me to open the door would come and give a nudge with his paws and make squeaking sound.

Page 34: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

34

13. Dilnaz Hiramaneck-Upadhyay/Tyson, Bruce Lee, Princess - Over smart !!! 14. Dr.Srilakshmi Amirtheswaran/Robin, Maya, Tehya - Extremely intelligent. And street smart. For example, if their food is too hot, they spill it on the floor and spread it out to cool it down quicker. 15. Brittany Powell and Greg Teitelbaum/Mira - Mira is very very smart. She has taken very well to training and listened well even as a puppy. She can be defiant at times when she anticipates that she will be asked to go into her crate or when she knows that she has done something wrong. Mira has learned to open her closed crate door from the outside using her teeth to access her food or other toys "buried" in her crate. She will often try to "bury" treats and toys under the bedding in her crate. She will also keep a close watch on her crate to guard her food bowl from our cat. If she thinks the cat is going toward her crate and food, she will get up and "guard" it. She responded very well to a daily routine when it was established. 16. Andy Roper/Vaga - Never a great problem solver, Vaga displays a very stoical serenity, a calmness and instinctive wisdom that carries her through situations where more intelligent dogs would fail. 17. Ruth Schneider/Incredible Hope - We find that Hope is far above the average intelligence level. Once we teach her the rules she is quick to follow them, is eager to please and mature beyond her years. Generally, we don't have to speak to her more than once and she will obey commands. 18. Randi Lildballe/Otto - He is very intelligent. He understands a lot of words and can do a lot of tricks and commands. The dog trainers we have met have been impressed. He is also very aware of moods and how people are feeling. 19. Payal Ray/Rocket - Watch out Einstein...these Indies will give you serious competition. Indies are super Intelligent. 20. Neha Arora/Champ & Jebo - Champ is very intelligent, he has built a vocabulary and can understand several words. When he was barely three months old, he would hide my car keys (both sets) so I that I don't go to work! Jebo is not as bright, but is quite capable. Her special talent is opening bag zippers and looking for things to chew on. 21. Elizabeth Abraham/Angel, Blacky, Brandy, Keiko, Max, Mindy, Millie, Parsley - Very intelligent. Easily trained using positive methods. 22. Hutokshi Ichhaporia/Simba - Fairly intelligent.

Page 35: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

35

23. Sharon Squires/Rupa, Bhura, Muskaan, Ravi - This is a hard one. They are so stubborn that I am never sure how smart they really are. Being trainable and being smart are not the same thing. I will say that they have a long memory and can connect cause and affect almost instantly. 24. Vidya & Samik Biswas/Grumpy - Well, there's no other canine to beat our baby when it comes to intelligence. Don't believe us? Well, Grumpy understands 4 different languages J She knows how to open doors, and clearly remembers exactly where she's hidden her wares in different parts of the house - and we mean EXACTLY where, even after months of being hidden away. 25. Caroline Walker/India - She is extremely intelligent and at 9 years old she is still learning new tricks. This intelligence doesn’t translate to obedience though. 26. Cherida Hivale/Blackie, Mud Pack, Whitey, Skinny Goldy - Blackie is extremely intelligent and independent. Mud Pack is very Intelligent but slower to react, very alert when outdoors - behaviour is totally different depending on his surroundings - placid indoors, very alert outdoors. Whitey is very intelligent. Skinny Goldy is highly intelligent and curious. 27. Mira Shihadeh/Bindi - Smart in a cunning way. 28. Colleen Doyle and Greg Hitz/Cinnamon - Highly intelligent. She is able to play hide and seek with people and objects. She knows over 50 words and is able to choose between choices. We can offer her "walk" or "belly rub" with our hands and she will pick the one she wants. As other people stated she watches TV and only reacts when a dog is on the screen. 29. Monique Nerman/Tommy Goldeneyes - I think that he has high intelligence as he has the capacity to solve problems. 30. Anand M N/Shiro - High intelligence. There is something about Indies that cannot be tamed (something cat like). 31. Ashwini Kakkeri/Benzi, Browny and Boomer - Benzi LITERALLY understood EVERYTHING. Browny: She had selective understanding; if she liked what she heard, then she understood. Boomer talks A LOT!!!!!!.... starts to whine by 10.30... making sure we get tucked-in with him... no lights on after 10.30 for him. 32. Lisa Warden/Lady Penelope Chatterjee, Button Sengupta, Mr. Shakespeare Patel - Dead smart. Button opens and closes doors, and has picked up scavenging tricks from Shakers just by watching him. Shakers shows incredible creativity and problem-solving skills when he wants to get something that’s out of his reach. 33. Rajvi Mariwala/Tequila, Gumps - Tequila: excellent at problem solving [example: learned on her own to open doors and open/shut bags] and very good memory. Thus, highly intelligent - it's tough to tire her out mentally!

Page 36: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

36

Gumps: average intelligence. 34. Rohitangshu Das/Bush - Bush shows great intelligence as he can understand the state of mind I am in and that too when I am not talking to him. He acts according to my state of mind. 35. Manik J. Godbole/Tommy, Chinky - I would say, moderately intelligent. Their independent nature overpowers the trained intelligence. 36. Ambar Kumar Gupta/PP - Knows exactly how many biscuits were taken out and where they are! Knows exactly when my plate is empty and then moves to the next person with food on his/her plate! Recognizes intonation and responds immediately to alarm. 37. Charles Twigg & family/Jake - Seems bright 38. Madhu S.K./Foxy - Very Smart! Knows how to grab attention. At the same time listens very keenly when we speak softly and request her to stay in the utility until we clean the house, she obeys. Till date have only noticed her showing intelligence in her mischievous actions! :P 39. Vishakha Gangadharan/Twitches - BEYOND excellent. Completely potty- trained at 2 months. She knew all the basic commands and then some by 3 months. Super-sneaky and super smart. Her life’s goal is getting chicken and belly rubs . 40. Saswati Mukerji/Fudge, Charm, Minx, Rumpus, Zorro, Pebbles, Shaka, Scamp, Rudy, Chloe, Chutki and Husky - Some of them are very intelligent and some are only blobs of affection. But they pick up instructions and changes in the tone of voice very fast. 41. Sarabjeet Kaur/Angel - 4 on a scale of 1-5. 42. Ramya Bala/Sandy - He's a smart one too. Though he loves to play and always wants to do it, he wouldn't play one game for too long (doesn't play fetch!) He learned to dig to get out of our compound (and make his way back of course). I think he is very intelligent and can pick up a lot of tricks but I haven't had the time to train him and also given his high energy driven ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)! I need to learn to work around that. 43. Tina Carver D’Souza/Raju, Deepa - Both are very smart. 44. Lalitprabha Jadhav & Vidhyut Kargutkar/Perky, Kolaveri - Very high. Perky understands emotions perfectly and is most considerate and understands her boundaries very well especially taking care never to be rough. Kolaveri is highly intelligent. She distinguishes four-legged creatures with tails from humans when watching TV. She also seems to recognize horses on TV and barks at them. 45. Rajashree Khalap/Kiba, Kimaya - Very quick learners. Very quick reflexes and reactions. Kiba is particularly clever at doing naughty things in a stealthy manner, e.g. stealing socks

Page 37: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

37

without getting detected. He likes games with rules, which he may change as he plays. If his ball rolls under furniture and I’m looking for it, he’ll show me where it is and ‘ask’ me to get it out. Outdoors his intelligence is sometimes clouded by his hyper, nervous temperament. Kimaya is extremely clever at understanding what we want and adapting her behaviour. She takes care to do naughty things only when we aren’t present. They are extremely good at ‘training’ their owners. 46. Aditya Panda/Robin - Extremely high. 47. Yvonne de Kock/Leela, Rishi - Super intelligent - they use this to their advantage by communicating on a more subtle level with us humans so as to ensure their lives run smoothly.

Page 38: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

38

F. Capacity for independent thinking and problem-solving

1. Minna Lintu & J. Desai/Roshni & Puru – High. Roshni takes a while to solve problems, I think she is a bit too impatient (or pampered) to figure out for example how to get that yummy treat from the mean plastic bottle to stick with it for long. She'd rather solve the problem by giving us the dreaded "but I'm so cute" look. Puru seems to have actual problem-solving skills as you can almost see the cogs turning in his brain when being taught something new and a treat is waved at him. He tends to sit staring into nothing for a second or two before attempting to figure out what it is we want him to do for the treat and he perseveres until he gets it. He also solved the treat in a bottle puzzle in roughly 5 minutes without destroying the bottle in the process. Granted once the treats run out he will completely demolish said bottle.

2. Rochelle Lucas/Kala - Capacity for independent thinking is very high. She’s good at problem-solving and accustomed to resolving her own problems. She can also ignore commands if the mood suits her. Generally though, she is very calm and well-behaved. 4. Lakshmi Ravishankar/Puffy - I am not sure I have tested it...but I guess the points I made in the 'intelligence' come from independent thinking...I am not sure, though.

5. Mandi Wagner/Winnie - Winnie is mostly an independent thinker. Commands such as 'come' and 'stay' have been a real challenge. She is not dependent on us for much of anything, except meals and fresh water. She figures out solutions to problems or challenges quickly with virtually no direction. 6. Amy Manoharan/Rex - Very very high. He figures things out on his own in no time. He’s generally pretty good at keeping himself busy...or getting into a lot of trouble when he feels like it. Unlike other dogs that I’ve had Rex needs tons of supervision because he’s so darn smart that it’s like having a toddler. 7. Shawna Weaver/Priya - More interested in following people and other dogs around, but did independently play and very curious to explore. 8. Anil Tiwari ,Dr Neelam Tewari & Yash Tewari/Jackie, Jimmy, Fluffy, Rottie, Brownie, Chottu, Vodka, Martini, Johnny, Grant, Bacardi, Sweety, Chhoti, Hyna, Maria - All are capable of independent thinking. They know about house training. Also understand that kitchen and Pooja Ghar are places they should not step inside. they know they will get their prasad FIRST then the humans once the pooja is over.

Page 39: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

39

11. Dilnaz Hiramaneck-Upadhyay/Tyson, Bruce Lee, Princess - Extremely capable of making their own decisions. Tyson at times tends to lean on Bruce's decisions, but only when he thinks he may get into trouble on his own. 12. Brittany Powell and Greg Teitelbaum/Mira - Mira certainly has a capacity for independence and exploration. She has recognized when our neighbor comes home and takes her dogs outside to play. Mira will go to the door and ring the bells to go outside so she can play with our neighbor’s dogs and receive treats and attention from our neighbor. 13. Ruth Schneider/Incredible Hope - Hope almost thinks out loud. We watch her investigating or observing as if she is thinking about her next step. She is inquisitive and cautious and will find a way to accomplish whatever it is that she feels is worth the effort. 14. Randi Lildballe/Otto - Very much - sometimes many even a little too much. 15. Payal Ray/Rocket - Rocket is so loved and pampered....on this front I really dont know. 16. Neha Arora/Champ & Jebo - Champ gets bored with repetitions and is quick to figure out patterns and then behave accordingly. He also understands that the same behavior is not acceptable with everyone and will modify it accordingly, i.e., he knows he can take liberties with me, less so with my mum and none at all with dad. Jebo: It sometimes feels like she is in her own world with all of us on the periphery. This leads me to believe that she is capable of independent thinking, or rather independent living. 16. Elizabeth Abraham/Angel, Blacky, Brandy, Keiko, Max, Mindy, Millie, Parsley - Fairly good. 17. Sharon Squires/Rupa, Bhura, Muskaan, Ravi - Very powerful strong quality they have is to think for themselves. Rupa is my most hard core Indy. She is never a "bad" dog. But she is her own person. Totally does not take direction unless some pressure is applied. 18. Vidya & Samik Biswas/Grumpy - Grumpy is self-reliant. We understood that right from when she was a 3 month old puppy. For instance, there was this time when she was fed some dry food on a piece of paper that would move away as she chomped away or when the wind blew the emptier corner of the paper. She would promptly place her paw on the lighter end of the paper, acting as a weight so the paper would stay in place while she would continue with her meal J 19. Caroline Walker/India - She does no other kind of thinking. She is extremely independent. 20. Cherida Hivale/Blackie, Mud Pack, Whitey, Skinny Goldy - Blackie - highly independent - almost arrogant. Mud Pack - not very independent, prefers human partnership. Whitey – independent. Skinny Goldy – independent, a bit of a loner. 21. Colleen Doyle and Greg Hitz/Cinnamon - Very independent; she creates new games daily.

Page 40: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

40

22. Monique Nerman/Tommy Goldeneyes - Very much so. If caught in fishnet, then will chew off the net. If bored waiting for me at the supermarket then will chew off the leash and go for a stroll. If he has a bad stomach and needs to go out during the night, will not bark but breathe on me to wake me up or walk in a way on the floor that he knows will wake me up. As a young dog would stop and look both ways for cars before crossing the street. 26. Lisa Warden/Lady Penelope Chatterjee, Button Sengupta,Mr. Shakespeare Patel - High capacity -- as above. 27. Rajvi Mariwala/Tequila, Gumps - Tequila: very high. Gumps: high 29. Manik J. Godbole/Tommy, Chinky - Very much. All his life Tommy has taken his own decisions right from when to go for walks, where to go for walks, which dogs to befriend, he never whined when we left him alone right from his puppy days. He had his own ‘pastimes'. Chinky too thinks independently. In fact that’s how she traced me to my house, from the faraway highway where she was staying. 30. Charles Twigg & family/Jake - He is afraid of his own shadow. Loves to chase cats. He can find them even in their best hiding spot. 31. Madhu S.K./Foxy - Now 11 months old. She needs time to grow and make her own calls. Right now her interactions with her stray friends outside are guided by me. Also the way she interacts with strangers and friends. Inside the house too, her spots are very random. But she is given that freedom to do what she wants but we keep watching her. Not allowed to destroy anything! 33. Saswati Mukerji/Fudge, Charm, Minx, Rumpus, Zorro, Pebbles, Shaka, Scamp, Rudy, Chloe, Chutki and Husky - A lot of the time they exhibit it. Sometimes when excited then they are a mob. After all it’s Bengal! 34. Sarabjeet Kaur/Angel - Never really checked. Worth looking at. 35. Ramya Bala/Sandy - I think that is inbuilt in him from generations of his ancestors being free roaming canines. 36. Tina Carver D’Souza/Raju, Deepa - Both think independently. What one is lacking the other has. 37. Lalitprabha Jadhav & Vidhyut Kargutkar/Perky, Kolaveri - High - Kolaveri doesn’t obey commands which she thinks are trivial like ‘shake hands’ for example. Applies her mind especially when she needs to eat stuff like peanuts when she must break the shell and eat only

Page 41: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

41

the peanut inside! Perky is more of a follower than an independent dog and is much too attached to be on her own.

38. Rajashree Khalap/Kiba, Kimaya - At one time Kimaya used to dig herself out from under the garden fence in Nagaon and roam around but was always able to find her way home. We replaced the fence with a wall for her safety. Watching her on Nagaon beach I find that she isn’t naïve or overfriendly with new people or dogs. Rather she seems to evaluate them and decide how to interact with each one. That seems to indicate a capacity for independent decision-making and survival. Kiba has been following her lead since he was very small and his capacity for problem-solving hasn’t ever been tested.

39. Aditya Panda/Robin - Extremely high

Page 42: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

42

G. Independent nature

1. Rochelle Lucas/Kala - Independence is low. She is a very sociable dog and prefers to spend time with people. She doesn’t like to be left alone for long periods. 2. Dominique Brand/LittleDog - He is very strong willed. It can sometimes be a battle of wills when he doesn't want to do something. So he needs consistent training, firm rules, and determined owners not to give in to him when he is being stubborn.. otherwise we would have mayhem!!

Page 43: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

43

3. Andy Roper/Vaga - Vaga enjoys wondering off on her own and there have been times when I'd only ever see her at meal times. 4. Amrendra Singh/Rocky - Very independent dogs, and have a mind of their own. Training has to start from early stages and with a very strict regime as the hardship of living on the streets and every day being a survival has made them very tough mentally and physically and over that very intelligent. My Rocky is his own boss and a minotaur might be trainable, but not Rocky, and I love it as if we as humans can appreciate independent thinking then why not with the most faithful and trustworthy beings to ever exist. 5. Vidya & Samik Biswas/INDog-mix Grumpy - Grumpy is not exactly what I would term ‘sociable’. She likes her own space. She can stay alone at home without us around for she is used to that lifestyle now. Earlier was tough, but she has conditioned herself in such a way. However, food will only be eaten after we are back home from work. 6. Ambar Kumar Gupta/PP - Very little. Totally used to the flat and its confines. on the rare occasion she has slipped her leash she has remained frozen, not knowing what to do! 7. Anand M N/Shiro - High energy. If that energy is not channeled properly, highly destructive behavior. If there is something bad about Indies (or Indian Dingo as I call them) is their roaming behavior. 8. Ashwini Kakkeri/Benzi, Browny and Boomer - Benzi: She did not like walking on leash. She preferred to walk independently. Browny: Since she was always with her mom (benzi) a part of her never grew up. But she did have her choice of friends and food (very choosy and never ate 'junk'). Boomer does show traits of independence too. 9. Pavithra Chandramowlisharan/Shiva - Shiva is an extremely independent guy. We never trained him to do anything against his will other than making him eat on time, which he never does. Occasionally, he ventures into the streets at night and prowls around and comes home. Maybe, he goes out to meet his dog friends or is out hunting cats and mice, no one knows and no one has ever dared to ask him. He knows when he is sick and will refuse a single bite or sip of milk, topples all his food if he is forced. He hates human touch and will try to run out of your grasp when the time comes. When he is at the beach, he always knows his limits, he knows where to find us and he also has his own way of being adventurous. On the whole, these traits make Shiva a very independent person. He knows what he wants and how to get it. 10. Vishakha Gangadharan/Twitches - She has this capacity. She has a basket full of toys and she won't play with the one you pick out, it always will be her choice and she will dig out toy of choice even from the bottom of the basket.

Page 44: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

44

11. Rajashree Khalap/Kiba, Kimaya - Very independent and strong-willed specially Kiba. 12. Yvonne de Kock/Leela, Rishi - Independent, and so self-respecting that you can't help but have immense respect for them 13. Minna Lintu/Roshni, Puru - Yes and no. Independent in the sense that obedience training would be a challenge but not in the sense that they enjoy being away from their humans.

Page 45: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

45

H. Obedience

1. Minna Lintu & J. Desai, owner of Roshni & Puru, INDog-mixes, Delhi - Moderate to very

good, depends on the situation. Both have very selective hearing and obedience is not a popular word in their dictionary. Things change completely if a treat is promised, then they become models of obedience. For as long as there are treats, of course. Fortunately Roshni has developed a common sense and knows when being disobedient will result in her being removed from the room and yelled at. Puru is still a work in progress in the common sense department.

2. Rochelle Lucas, owner of Kala, INDog, Australia - Moderate, depends on the situation. She is very calm and well behaved, however if she was to see a cat and started chasing it, she forgets any other “instructions”

3. Nolin Chitnis, INDog-mixes Coffee and Bruze, Thane - OK OK. Independent to an extent.

Will not fetch objects every time. Need firm hand. Often resemble rich spoilt kids if not controlled or tamed.

4. Lakshmi Ravishankar, Puffy - I would say 50%. If someone's at the door, no matter what

I say, she will not stop barking. I have to outshout her or banish her to the interior of the

Page 46: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

46

house if I have to have any conversation going with the guest...this is one aspect I have not been able to correct.

5. Mandi Wagner/Winnie - Winnie is fairly obedient, but her stubborn side shows quite a lot.

She generally has no interest in following commands unless the reward is significant. Food is a great motivator, but at places such as the dog park, she pays no mind to my presence.

6. Amy Manoharan/Rex - When he feels like it he’s great. He KNOWS what he’s supposed

to do. He just chooses not to because he seems to think he knows better than us. When he gets caught he looks guilty and slinks off to his bed like "fine...I will put myself in time out." We don't even have to tell him. He just goes. LOL.

7. Shawna Weaver/Priya - Very obedient and quick to learn commands and tricks.

8. Anil Tiwari ,Dr Neelam Tewari & Yash Tewari/Jackie, Jimmy, Fluffy, Rottie, Brownie,

Chottu, Vodka, Martini, Johnny, Grant, Bacardi, Sweety, Chhoti, Hyna, Maria - HIGHLY obedient. Never had a problem so far. Once you treat them as your own kid, they tend to learn faster.

9. Aditi Shankar/Chloe, Rocket - Very obedient and quick to learn commands and tricks.

10. Pavithra Chandramowlisharan/Shiva - I would not say Shiva is extremely obedient as we

never trained him to be this way like obeying commands. He knows what his name is and will respond to his name. He can understand everything we say in the way he reacts with his body language. He sits in the couch when my mom tells him to go take rest. He is the first one to get ready for car trips more out of his love for going out in the car rather than obedience. He is extremely obedient when we are outside in friends' houses, he knows his limits and is a golden child who will listen to every command my dad says.

11. Amrendra Singh/Rocky - Well with Rocky I can say that he isn't very obedient because

of too much of pampering. These dogs like any other dogs tend to get spoilt (and I love spoiling him) if not trained well but can be obedient as they are very intelligent.

12. Dilnaz Hiramaneck-Upadhyay/Tyson, Bruce Lee, Princess - Have a mind of their own.

They're all obedient, but take me for a ride when they aren't in the mood.

13. Dr.Srilakshmi Amirtheswaran/Robin, Maya, Tehya - Usually very obedient and not bratty. And usually to one person only.

14. Brittany Powell and Greg Teitelbaum/Mira - Mira is very obedient for her "person" and

listens fairly well to others. She will be defiant at times if she senses that there is change to her routine. She has been crate- trained and we are working on allowing her to spend time outside of her crate in a specific area of the house when we are gone. She is doing

Page 47: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

47

well with this. She was easily trained and has learned to sit at intersections while on walks and stop and sit when the person walking her stops. She is at times defiant but responds to dominant discipline and will even assume a submissive position if she anticipates that she has done something "bad".

15. Andy Roper/Vaga - Very obedient. Vaga is a service dog and allowed to be with me

wherever I go. She needed no special training to display perfect behaviour in public while on the leash. Off the leash, however, she still obeys but in her own time.

16. Ruth Schneider/Incredible Hope - She carries herself with a sense of dignity and does

not want to disappoint. Simple commands and tricks have been mastered with positive reinforcement.

17. Randi Lildballe/Otto - Yes and no - but I think most of the problems we have are

because of us and not Otto. He is not an easy dog and not a "first time dog owner" dog.

18. Payal Ray/Rocket - Do Ireally have to write anything here? My spoilt brat is not obedient...but that’s not his fault. We have spoilt him rotten.

19. Neha Arora/Champ & Jebo - Champ is quite obedient in terms of not majorly acting out.

However he will follow certain commands only if he sees a treat in your hand or is in the mood. We have had limited success with Jebo. While she does respond to her name and understands no, she does not follow commands. Neither of the dogs have had any professional training yet.

20. Hutokshi Ichhaporia/Simba - Obeys instantly if there is a treat offered. Otherwise, obeys

when he feels like or when a more authoritative tone is used.

21. Sharon Squires/Rupa, Bhura, Muskaan, Ravi - Again, my dogs are independent. They can't be expected to obey just because it is expected. I have long years of experience training dogs. Including police work and personal protection. These dogs are not suited to police work. They lack the drive to work and don't like repetitive tasks. When it comes to being in the household they listen. They are protective and faithful. But I don't see they are trainable for the sake of training. Getting them to obey is something I must be quite strict with. Submission also, is not obedience. They submit quickly, but don't obey.

22. Vidya & Samik Biswas/Grumpy - Ahh :) we are the obedient humans of our canine baby.

Honestly, we hardly try to control Grumpy unnecessarily or try to show who's boss. And it never came to the stage where we had to control her. For when we are in a crowd, she clings to either mommy or daddy and her eyes follow us wherever we go. Her eyes are always fixed on our movements. But yes, she has her own stubborn traits, just like that of a child. For instance, if she's busy chasing a cat up the tree in the park or looking at two other dogs play, she wouldn't want to go back home and it would be a chase till we finally got her to decide that home is better than the streets!

Page 48: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

48

23. Caroline Walker/India - I have not had much luck training India to be obedient. I’m not

sure how much of it is me and how much of it is the breed. She does seem to respond better to a male handler.

24. Cherida Hivale/Blackie, Mud Pack, Whitey, Skinny Goldy - Blackie has a mind of his own,

was a naughty adolescent but a very disciplined adult - obedient but highly independent. Mud Pack is extremely obedient. Whitey is obedient but has bouts of mischief. Skinny Goldy is extremely obedient.

25. Mira Shihadeh/Bindi - Will follow orders if there is reward.

26. Colleen Doyle and Greg Hitz/Cinnamon - Very easy to train. She is able to pick up new

tricks from watching other dogs. She learned "give me paw" at 5 months when watching another dog.

27. Monique Nerman/Tommy Goldeneyes - Very obedient. Will not touch anything in the

house (didn't tell him he couldn't). Will not steal food, can leave a plate next to him and walk into another room, come back and food still on it. Will always try to please. Will not listen or obey when he is off chasing a cat or car.

28. Anand M N/Shiro - Thinks she owns me.

29. Ashwini Kakkeri/Benzi, Browny and Boomer - Benzi: Not obedient to me. She only

listened to Dad. Browny: If she likes: she listens...but as she grew older, she did start getting obedient. Boomer : for his age, he is alright... still does things for attention :(

30. Lisa Warden/Lady Penelope Chatterjee, Button Sengupta,Mr. Shakespeare Patel - Not

very obedient -- but I think that has a lot more to do with my lack of efforts in this area. Button and Penelope are submissive. Shakers is strong-willed and basically does what he wants.

31. Rajvi Mariwala/Tequila, Gumps - Tequila: very good at obedience with owner, not as

much with other family members. Gumps: Very good at obedience - even with strangers.

32. Rohitangshu Das/Bush - He respects & heeds my every command and also understood the importance of walking by my side when without a leash.

33. Manik J. Godbole/Tommy, Chinky - Tommy is very stubborn. Chinky is far better than

Tommy. She has a very good recall, may be because she trusts me a lot.

34. Ambar Kumar Gupta/PP - Most disobedient, unless there is a biscuit in hand.

35. Charles Twigg & family/Jake - Strong willed…does not listen to wife or kids.

Page 49: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

49

36. Madhu S.K./Foxy - I would say she is 80% obedient. The 20% is a giveaway. What is a

dog if it has to obey us always…She has a huge mischievous streak. On all the important things she obeys.

37. Vishakha Gangadharan/Twitches - Very Good. She will follow 99% of commands.

Except when she's fearful she will want to run away. Not from me though, just far enough from the thing causing fear (mostly overbearing puppies). I’m working on it though and I believe she will be the most obedient Indy in a few month’s time.

38. Saswati Mukerji/Fudge, Charm, Minx, Rumpus, Zorro, Pebbles, Shaka, Scamp, Rudy,

Chloe, Chutki and Husky - Generally obedient. Never aggressively disobedient or vicious.

39. Sarabjeet Kaur/Angel - 4 on a scale of 1-5

40. Ramya Bala/Sandy - He is obedient and takes commands from my grandma and also from us. He sits, shakes hands and calms down when we ask him to.

41. Tina Carver D’Souza/Raju, Deepa - Raju has a conscience and can be shamed. After he

bit he knew for days that he had done something wrong. For days after his dirty deed, he would do many nice, gentle things to get attention. Deepa is…Deepa! She is obedient when she knows that it will give her something.

42. Lalitprabha Jadhav & Vidhyut Kargutkar/Perky, Kolaveri - Perky is highly obedient and

understand change in tone and emotion in the voice very well. Kolaveri is especially moderate and needs a scolding sometimes.

43. Rajashree Khalap/Kiba, Kimaya - Very obedient at home, less so when outdoors and

distracted. Kiba was obedient outdoors as a pup, then went through a disobedient phase in adolescence and is now becoming obedient again. Kimaya mostly ignores commands outdoors, but though she doesn’t have prompt recall on the beach, she understands that I don’t want her to roam far. She comes to me at regular intervals and does a ‘sit’ without being asked – for treats or petting!

44. Aditya Panda/Robin - High.

Page 50: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

50

I. Trainability

1. Minna Lintu & J. Desai/Roshni & Puru - Very good, though requires “out of the box”

thinking at times. Quick and easy with the right motivation, which luckily is food for both. Repetition is boring however so I try to do a little at a time and hope it will stick. Trainability for every day things like not rushing to the garbage bag as soon as the kitchen door is open is pretty good and treats work wonders there too.

2. Rochelle Lucas/Kala - Good. We adopted her from the street as an adult and she was

toilet trained from day one, easily took to the leash, sits on command etc. She can have a mind of her own though and so we are careful letting her off the leash.

3. Dominique Brand/LittleDog - Super easy to train. He can learn a new obedience skill or

trick within 10 minutes. And then remember it the next day! His memory is incredible. We have seen this with travelling. We can visit a new restaurant one day, and return to it a few days later, he will remember the precise table we sat at! When we change hotels frequently, it is sometimes difficult for him to remember where our room was. So he sniffs his way past each door to see if it "smells" like our room... that seems to be

Page 51: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

51

problem solving to me! The downside of having a super smart doggie is that he will get bored very easily. He needs his brain as well as his body to be used.

4. Nolin Chitnis/Coffee & Bruze - Good. Can be house trained easily.

5. Lakshmi Ravishankar/Puffy - She gets distracted very easily. I haven't tried it with all my

heart.

6. Mandi Wagner/Winnie - Winnie is very easy and fun to train. She shows a lot of enthusiasm for tasks and enjoys a challenge.

7. Amy Manoharan/Rex - How much patience do you have? He’s EXTREMELY smart and

learns at a phenomenal rate. In ONE day he learned to give us each paw separately for shake, both at once, high 5, sit, lay down, come, stay and 'go there.' ONE DAY. He also learned to do a belly crawl to a given point then stay there until he was told to come in about 15 minutes. So long as you have treats you have his attention. But once the food’s gone so is he. Easiest dog I’ve ever trained... too bad he chooses to ignore commands just as quickly.

8. Shawna Weaver/Priya - Loved learning new things.

9. Anil Tiwari, Dr Neelam Tewari & Yash Tewari/Jackie, Jimmy, Fluffy, Rottie, Brownie,

Chottu, Vodka, Martini, Johnny, Grant, Bacardi, Sweety, Chhoti, Hyna, Maria - What I found that if we take them as a puppy it becomes easy to train them. Older dogs also get trained but we need to break the barrier of the wolf- sort of behaviour which they have been living. Luckily all my babies were easy to train and intelligent.

10. Aditi Shankar/Chloe, Rocket - Chloe shows aptitude for training. Rocket - Training does

not interest him, though he understands commands.

11. Pavithra Chandramowlisharan/Shiva - Not applicable. We never tried training him. I assume he learns quickly as he was quick in responding to his name in the earlier days.

12. Amrendra Singh/Rocky - My experience with INDogs (had them from the time I was born

and I'm 31 years old now) is that they can be trained; but just like alpha males/females they tend to boss over you from time to time because of their natural instinct. If you just make them realize that who is the boss in the house they can be trained.

13. Dilnaz Hiramaneck-Upadhyay/Tyson, Bruce Lee, Princess – We've never really trained

them as such, and they've learnt all they know watching the others or following hand gestures and speech patterns.

14. Dr.Srilakshmi Amirtheswaran/Robin, Maya, Tehya - Training is slightly harder than with

pedigreed dogs but ultimately rewarding.

Page 52: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

52

15. Brittany Powell and Greg Teitelbaum/Mira - She learned commands early and easily and

we used treats as rewards when training. She will sit, stay, come, and lay down on command and also responds to hand signals directing commands. Mira has also learned to communicate with us when she needs to go outside to use the bathroom. We have trained her to ring a set of bells that hang on our door and when she needs to go outside, she will go to the bells and ring them to be let out. Also, she has learned to sit at intersections while on walks and stop and sit when the person walking her stops.

16. Andy Roper/Vaga - Never needed to train her to do the standard things. She just does

them.

17. Ruth Schneider/Incredible Hope - Quick, easy and effectively trained. She enjoys the challenges of learning new things and following rules.

18. Randi Lildballe/Otto - Very much - you can teach him almost anything and he picks it up

very fast.

19. Payal Ray/Rocket - INDogs if trained properly can be really good. We got a trainer for Rocket, but one day I saw him being harsh with him and immediately stopped his training.

20. Neha Arora/Champ, Jebo - Champ is food motivated and thus easier to train. However,

will follow commands only for treats and is easily bored with repetitions. For example a game of fetch is not very enticing to him, even though he understands it. He was very easily house-trained in the first few weeks. He does pee in the house very rarely, but it is usually when he is acting out for being left alone or insecurity (when Jebo comes over). Jebo is not food-motivated, and is extremely choosy about what she eats. This makes it very difficult to train her. She is mostly house-trained and without any training efforts from our end. She only regresses when she is in a new environment.

21. Elizabeth Abraham/Angel, Blacky, Brandy, Keiko, Max, Mindy, Millie, Parsley - Excellent

22. Hutokshi Ichhaporia/Simba - Fairly good

23. Sharon Squires/Rupa, Bhura, Muskaan, Ravi - It is a great feeling when I get them to

learn something because it takes so long. When Rupa finally get's it and listens even when distracted, I am pleased with her and myself! However, "training" them to be housebroken was easy. It isn't training, it's just showing. They want to be clean. I don't think this is training, it is showing. Many times with them I haven't trained I just showed.

24. Vidya & Samik Biswas/Grumpy - Grumps is a very fast learner. We house-trained her

right from when she was 3 months old and despite spending most of the first 3 months after her birth on the streets, we were amazed at how fast she picked up the corner in

Page 53: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

53

the house where she was to potty and pee. She would never EVER dirty any other part of the house. If she felt like she wanted to go out, she'd paw at the front door or would just stand next to the door looking at it longingly till we realized she'd prefer to relieve herself outside. Even while travelling in our car, she has been through several bouts of motion sickness. Never once has she dirtied the car seats. In fact, she'd get down on the floor of the car and potty on the rubber mats or wait for us to stop at a place where she could relieve herself outside comfortably.

25. Caroline Walker/India - In the home I can teach her to do about anything if I have a treat

in my hand. Outside the home she is to distracted and often will not even take food when offered.

26. Cherida Hivale/Blackie, Mud Pack, Whitey, Skinny Goldy - Blackie: high. Mud Pack: high.

Whitey: average. Skinny Goldy: high.

27. Mira Shihadeh/Bindi - Learns quickly if focused on training, maintenance required otherwise she gets bored.

28. Colleen Doyle and Greg Hitz/Cinnamon - Amazing! She can learn a new trick in less

than a day. We taught her how to play throw and catch a couple of days ago.

29. Monique Nerman/Tommy Goldeneyes - Very easy to train, and gets very bored easily. Hates "Down". He loves to please and loves to be praised.

30. Anand M N/Shiro - Nothing great.

31. Ashwini Kakkeri/Benzi, Browny and Boomer - Benzi trained us into listening to her.

Browny didn’t need any training. She would understand if told once. Would never repeat a mistake. I don’t know how she did that. But she never jumped for a biscuit…she was too classy for that. Boome: Only thing till date is "walk/chalo/hogana/polama" is what he understands.

32. Lisa Warden/Lady Penelope Chatterjee, Button Sengupta, Mr. Shakespeare Patel -

Can't really comment since I have not applied myself seriously enough to training them.

33. Rajvi Mariwala/Tequila, Gumps - Tequila: very quick and easy to train using varied motivations such as treats and toys. Gumps: only food motivated and easy to train.

34. Rohitangshu Das/Bush - Giving training to Bush was quite a task because it took more

time but eventually he understood all basic commands.

35. Manik J. Godbole/Tommy, Chinky - Tommy was difficult to train, but may be because he was my first dog, so even I was learning doggy ways and he took advantage of that.

Page 54: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

54

Chinky is not trained as per training books, but it doesn’t matter as she understand a few words and behaves well enough to be a very acceptable pet dog.

36. Ambar Kumar Gupta/PP - Responds to biscuits. Occasionally to a bouncing ball.

37. Charles Twigg & family/Jake - Good so far.

38. Madhu S.K./Foxy - Again I would say she is perfect. 80% trained. Whatever is lacking in

her is our mistake. Probably I have not been able to give that consistent time to train her day in and day out on regular stuff, like walking without leash, controlling her hyperactive side which scares me when she is on the road and with strangers. Finally, on whatever she has been trained it was pretty easy to train her.

39. Vishakha Gangadharan/Twitches - High. Goes to pee on command. Sit, come, go get it

(fetch), no bark, no bite, drop it, off, down, up. All of the above commands she had mastered by 3 months of age. Stay, heel, stop and perfect walking are what we are working on. Later I'll go to the fun stuff like roll over, jump, shake hands etc.

40. Saswati Mukerji/Fudge, Charm, Minx, Rumpus, Zorro, Pebbles, Shaka, Scamp, Rudy,

Chloe, Chutki and Husky - To an extent. The basic training of sit, paw, no sound and sleep time, and garden time.

41. Sarabjeet Kaur/Angel - 4 on a scale of 1-5

42. Ramya Bala/Sandy - He knows the few basic tricks that my grandma has taught him but

not more. But I do believe he is intelligent and can be trained well if only I had the time and knew how to do it effectively. Unfortunately I visit my grandma and Sandy only for a month in a year.

43. Tina Carver D’Souza/Raju, Deepa - Raju is my baby, but he is a dog. I want him to enjoy

a dog’s life. I guess I could have trained him better to do fancy tricks, but we love him like he is. Deepa is too smart! Her excitement makes her a problem when it comes to training. We could use an expert trainer for her!

44. Lalitprabha Jadhav & Vidhyut Kargutkar/Perky, Kolaveri - Moderate - Have never tried

much training on both dogs. They can follow simple commands like sit, up, quiet. Although the younger one Kolaveri is difficult to train especially to be quiet!

45. Rajashree Khalap/Kiba, Kimaya - Extremely easy to train using food, praise and petting

as rewards. Both my dogs love training sessions because of the treats! Kimaya had an excellent positive trainer for two months. She had already learned ‘sit’ by watching my older dog. I taught Kiba basic obedience from when he was 2 months old. He is motivated by play as much as treats i.e. I throw his ball for him to fetch every time he

Page 55: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

55

does a task correctly. I keep training sessions short as they both get bored with too many repetitions.

46. Aditya Panda/Robin – High.

47. Yvonne de Kock/Leela, Rishi - Only ever use positive reinforcement training which is fun

and gets MUCH better results a lot sooner, even if they think it is silly it is still FUN. I sometimes get the impression that training is seen as puerile and rather silly by Leela and Rishi, as if I am the childish one imposing clicker training and words on them. Never punish as this is hurtful to both you and your dog.

Page 56: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

56

J. Nervousness

1. Minna Lintu & J. Desai/Roshni & Puru - Roshni is quite high on nervousness and reacts to every sound from outside the apartment. Wedding parades with drums and the disco trucks with phonebooth sized speakers freak her out and she doesn't stop shivering until they have moved so far they can't be heard. Outside she is nervous of trucks and tractors and people walking by talking loudly, which is why her walks take place when less people and traffic are present. Puru is very rarely nervous, but doesn't like the drums or disco trucks either. He's also skittish when given a bath, the first few times he screamed his little lungs out. Fireworks make them both a little jumpy.

2. Rochelle Lucas/Kala: None. She is a very calm dog.

3. Nolin Chitnis/Coffee & Bruze - Sometimes. Especially in presence of larger breeds.

4. Lakshmi Ravishankar/Puffy - Very nervous around kids and anything loud

5. Mandi Wagner/Winnie - Winnie definitely has a nervous side and many things spook her.

If she is not aware I've changed my clothes, she will bark at me as if I am a stranger. New noises make her nervous as well as new items introduced into her normal routine. She seems to always be alert and ready to take action.

Page 57: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

57

6. Amy Manoharan/Rex - At first he was exceptionally nervous and fearful. He’s since gotten over much of that. Now he’s mostly just nervous if strangers are around. He’s ok with loud sounds, thunder, wind, everything else...except motorcycles. He REALLY REALLY doesn't like motorcycles. He’s fine with cars and mostly ok with trucks…but motorcycles set him off. We think he probably remembers being on the street and we suspect he may have been hit at some point.

7. Shawna Weaver/Priya - Not nervous about anything.

8. Anil Tiwari ,Dr Neelam Tewari & Yash Tewari/Jackie, Jimmy, Fluffy, Rottie, Brownie,

Chottu, Vodka, Martini, Johnny, Grant, Bacardi, Sweety, Chhoti, Hyna, Maria – Fluffy is very nervous because he saw the death of his litter mates. Scared of strangers but will stay around us anyhow. Will not allow strangers to pat him.

9. Aditi Shankar/Chloe, Rocket – Chloe: high; Rocket: high.

10. Pavithra Chandramowlisharan/Shiva - He can get nervous when people touch him or

hug him. He even gets angry when you try to kiss him or hug him too much. I have noticed him getting nervous around some dogs too (excessive peeing around the place).

11. Amrendra Singh/Rocky - Rocky is a very confident dog. He wants to check everything

out but is very cautious until he figures out that it will not harm him. He can get a bit nervous with firecrackers and explosions but then he regains his confidence and wants to check out where the sound came from. I had other breeds before and most of them who were not familiar with such sounds would just go and hide in the darkest corner of the house. But Rocky is quiet, confident and wants to check it out after a few minutes of nervousness.

12. Dilnaz Hiramaneck-Upadhyay/Tyson, Bruce Lee, Princess: Tyson is the only one who

shows signs of nervousness, as he’s undergone shades of trauma in his early life. Bruce on the other hand is confident of his strength and that shows in the way he carries himself.

13. Dr.Srilakshmi Amirtheswaran/Robin, Maya, Tehya - Very nervous and cautious. Around

strangers. When there is more noise. While out on a walk in a new area.

14. Brittany Powell and Greg Teitelbaum/Mira - Mira can be nervous when it comes to change in her routine. This usually manifests in stomach trouble and loose stools. She is not frightened of loud noises or new people but is also easily excited. As a puppy she would often urinate out of excitement when introduced to a new person or puppy. She also tends to get nervous when we take her to the vet, but is generally relaxed and enjoys rides in the car.

Page 58: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

58

15. Andy Roper/Vaga - Pretty nervous. Of water. Of balconies. Of being picked up. Of the vet. Of being in the back of pick-up trucks. To be honest she has good reason to be wary of many things - it seems almost like she doesn't like taking risks. If there is no choice she will be brave however.

16. Ruth Schneider/Incredible Hope - Hope has not shown any signs of nervousness. She

does get a little defensive if a male dog approaches without warning from behind. Then the nervousness turns to "you better watch it, or else!"

17. Randi Lildballe/Otto - Very nervous - this is his main problem.

18. Payal Ray/Rocket - They are made of stern stuff...no nervousness at all. They know how

to fend for themselves.

19. Neha Arora/Champ,Jebo - Champ: Exhibits nervousness when he is around new people. This possibly goes back to his experiences as a pup in the shelter. He also has extreme separation anxiety and cannot be left alone at home. There has been marked improvement on both fronts, and we continue to work on improving them. Jebo is nervous in new environments; this stems from the fact that she has spent most of her time at home, and her walks are also limited to her building's compound. She is extremely fearful of loud noises - fireworks, washing machine, trucks - everything. She starts shaking, trembling and wants to get away as far as possible from the source.

20. Elizabeth Abraham/Angel, Blacky, Brandy, Keiko, Max, Mindy, Millie, Parsley - Depends

on early socialization. If not done, can become reactive to loud sounds (firecrackers, thunder, etc), new sounds and sights.

21. Hutokshi Ichhaporia/Simba - Doesn't like being left alone and gets agitated. Doesn't

want or like toys.

22. Sharon Squires/Rupa, Bhura, Muskaan, Ravi - Except for Bhura, they fear all new things. Very wary. Out of my four here, Rupa and Bhura have what can only be called PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). There is no other way to describe it. Dogs must have that and I didn't realize it till I got Indian dogs. Rupa was so terrified of cars and so terrified of planes and helicopters that I couldn't trust her even if we were nowhere near a road. She had panic attacks that made her almost impossible to handle off leash. Bhura is the same way. Out of his mind, just out of his tree when he hears cars or road noise. Cannot be comforted. Since two of my four are like this, it must be considered common? I didn't know dogs could get actual PTSD. Yes, they get scared from abuse or other bad experiences, but this was different. They are/were set off to the point of blind panic by particular things, it wasn't random. Both are set off by cars and roads engine noise and

wheels humming, truck engine braking.

Page 59: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

59

23. Vidya & Samik Biswas/Grumpy - Yes, crowds and crazy traffic with all kinds of street noises make Grumpy nervous. But if either mommy or daddy is with her, she clings to either and would do just fine, although her tail would be dismally stuck to her cute bottom :(

24. Caroline Walker/India - She is very alert outside the home. She reacts to every noise in

the street. She is terrified of fireworks or firecrackers.

25. Cherida Hivale/Blackie, Mud Pack, Whitey, Skinny Goldy – Blackie: very low, Mud Pack: average, Whitey: high, Skinny Goldy: extremely high.

26. Mira Shihadeh/Bindi - She is more nervous than calm.

27. Colleen Doyle and Greg Hitz/Cinnamon - She is very alert and in new situations is

nervous. One of her favorite activities is looking out the window to monitor outside.

28. Monique Nerman/Tommy Goldeneyes - Gets very nervous when I get in an argument or get angry. Will have tail between legs and shake if my temper goes trough the roof. Gets nervous/growls a lot in big gatherings of dogs and doesn't like people yelling. Otherwise very stable and confident.

29. Anand M N/Shiro - Never.

30. Ashwini Kakkeri/Benzi, Browny and Boomer - Benzi hated the little ‘tempo travellers’.

Ones that were used to take away street dogs. Always got restless near them. Browny hated crackers and gadgets...it was very difficult to take a picture of her. Boomer does not like loud noise (crackers/loudspeaker sounds).

31. Lisa Warden/Lady Penelope Chatterjee, Button Sengupta, Mr. Shakespeare Patel -

Button and Penelope are very tense and on edge when outside the home or in the car or if strangers come to the house. Shakers is not the nervous type. Interestingly, none of them get really bothered in thunderstorms or by fireworks, unless they're right over the house and really loud.

32. Rajvi Mariwala/Tequila, Gumps - Tequila: nervousness off the charts! Scared of people,

dogs, vehicular traffic, thunder, firecrackers and any other animal larger than a cat. Needs at least 6-7 play sessions with someone to be okay with them. Gumps: quite nervous of new people but not reactive. No problems with sounds or any other stimuli.

33. Rohitangshu Das/Bush: I think that Indian dogs have a general tendency of

nervousness/fear. It can be seen many times. For instance when one day a passing policeman waved his stick, Bush got frightened and put his tail down when I was walking him on a leash. And on other instance when a boy jumped suddenly in front of us.

Page 60: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

60

34. Manik J. Godbole/Tommy, Chinky - Tommy under normal circumstances not nervous at all. Very composed. Chinky nervous with strangers, new places, vehicles, crackers, unknown dogs.

35. Ambar Kumar Gupta/PP - Only nervous when going to the vet.

36. Charles Twigg & family/Jake - Very nervous!!! Too nervous!

37. Madhu S.K./Foxy – Nope, nothing! She literally is not scared of anything unless it is

something very new and huge! This too she likes to go and inspect closely. Otherwise she takes her cue from us to see if she can go and inspect new things.

38. Vishakha Gangadharan/Twitches - Average. Nervous of overbearing puppies, and wary

of strangers. Nervous when left in strange places alone. Nervous of packs of barking street dogs. Generally like a normal dog.

39. Saswati Mukerji/Fudge, Charm, Minx, Rumpus, Zorro, Pebbles, Shaka, Scamp, Rudy,

Chloe, Chutki and Husky - One of them is a frightened one. We rescued her when she was 2 months old and was being cannibalized by 5 adult dogs. But in the last 2 years she has improved remarkably.

40. Sarabjeet Kaur/Angel - Nervous when I am not around, or when her mentor the society

dog is not around when outside.

41. Ramya Bala/Sandy - He isn't particularly nervous, even around friends who visit first time (in fact he his friendly once he recognizes them as friends). But I have only seen him in his own environment (our house), not sure if he could get nervous when taken elsewhere.

42. Tina Carver D’Souza/Raju, Deepa – Male Raju: The only thing that makes Raju nervous

is crackers. This comes in handy when he is outside the compound and I want him in. I simply say “Mommy’s going to put a cracker.” He comes right in. BTW…I never have to put one only the threat is enough! Female Deepa: This gal is nervous about everything! I think she sleeps with her eyes open! She is a jumper, a singer, always hungry, scratches and chews her paws. I try to whisper with Deepa as she gets excited by loud or excited voices.

43. Lalitprabha Jadhav & Vidhyut Kargutkar/Perky, Kolaveri – Perky: very calm. Kolaveri:

Extremely nervous. I would also describe her as anxious sometimes especially when going out for walks seems to want to run into the house rather than be outside.

44. Rajashree Khalap/Kiba, Kimaya – When outdoors Kiba is a bit nervous of new things

and new places, but soon gets over it and wants to explore. Reactions vary from loud barking to staying quiet and close to me. I attribute his nervous reactive behavior to the

Page 61: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

61

fact that he’s descended from village dogs who are unused to the commotion of Indian cities. He doesn’t let strangers touch him when outdoors. At home he’s confident except for a very few nervous reactions to odd things (like the gym ball). He’s very scared of firecrackers, perhaps because he experienced his first Diwali as a very tiny pup. He is very nervous of any veterinary procedures and tends to tremble. Kimaya is sometimes nervous of new people and sometimes very friendly. She’s very nervous of all owned, leashed dogs (any breed) but less so of village dogs whose owners are not present. Perhaps she faced some aggression from a leashed dog in her street days. She is very scared of being walked on the street but likes new parks and new places, other peoples’ homes, as long as I’m present. She gains confidence from Kiba’s presence.

45. Aditya Panda/Robin – Extremely high.

Page 62: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

62

K. Reaction to anything new

1. Minna Lintu & J. Desai/ Roshni & Puru – Roshni is suspicious of anything new and if it is something big she will bark until she is convinced it is not a puppy-eating monster. Then her curiousity wins over. Puru huffs a bit but he is much too curious to be more than cautiously suspicious. Toys are received with enthusiasm from both.

2. Rochelle Lucas/ Kala, INDog - Very adaptable. She has lived in Australia, India and the US. She has lived on the street, in an apartment, in a house etc. She has travelled in rickshaws, planes, cars and boats. She adapts very quickly to new surroundings and new situations.

3. Nolin Chitnis/Coffee & Bruze - Curious.

4. Lakshmi Ravishankar/Puffy - Very curious initially. But curiosity wears off very quickly.

5. Mandi Wagner/Winnie - Winnie will either shy away or cower from new things or bark

and growl at them.

6. Amy Manoharan/Rex - New things mostly result in nervous investigation which typically involves barking, raised hair, and the sniff and run thing.

7. Shawna Weaver/Priya - Cautious and curious, open and interested.

8. Anil Tiwari, Dr Neelam Tewari & Yash Tewari/Jackie, Jimmy, Fluffy, Rottie, Brownie,

Chottu, Vodka, Martini, Johnny, Grant, Bacardi, Sweety, Chhoti, Hyna, Maria - Curious I guess. Will try to warn by barking but sniff and become easy soon.

9. Aditi Shankar/Chloe, Rocket – Chloe: apprehension; Rocket: is willing to give it a shot.

10. Pavithra Chandramowlisharan/Shiva - Shiva can adapt to new places very well. We

have lived in 4 different houses in a span of two years and he has adjusted brilliantly to all these places. He takes some days to completely become warm to new people in the house. He loves the car and will stay in it permanently if he is allowed to, so it has been easy to relocate him.

11. Amrendra Singh/Rocky - Very cautious and wants to smell it and sometimes just

urinates over some household item to show that it now belongs to him and he controls it.

12. Dilnaz Hiramaneck-Upadhyay/Tyson, Bruce Lee, Princess: Depending of what it is, Tyson will either get scared and hide, or bark his head off. The others will wait for the object to settle and sniff their noses off.

13. Dr.Srilakshmi Amirtheswaran/Robin, Maya, Tehya - Cautious. Then curious.

Page 63: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

63

14. Brittany Powell and Greg Teitelbaum/Mira - Mira reacts all right to new people, toys, and

environments. She certainly prefers her routine, but adjusted well when we moved.

15. Andy Roper/Vaga - Nervous but brave and then accommodating.

16. Ruth Schneider/Incredible Hope - Adaptive. Examples: first vet appointment in USA, cautious but trusting. First dog park visit, inquisitive then she loved it. Food was an interesting experience, letting us know what she definitely did not want to eat, but otherwise accepting.

17. Randi Lildballe/Otto - He is very aware of anything new and reacts to it within seconds.

Sometimes in a positive way but also sometimes negatively. In the woods he will bark at bicycles but in the streets they are all right!

18. Payal Ray/Rocket - Anything new is first sniffed, sniffed and sniffed some more. Then if

we like it we wag our tail and if we don’t like it we bark till everyone turns deaf.

19. Neha Arora/Champ & Jebo – Champ is extremely cautious of anything new - even new toys. However, he loves exploring new open spaces, that does not scare him at all. Jebo is a curious cat and loves to explore anything new introduced in her territory/familiar environment. However she dislikes being in a new environment.

20. Elizabeth Abraham/Angel, Blacky, Brandy, Keiko, Max, Mindy, Millie, Parsley - Depends

on early socialization. If not done, can become reactive to loud sounds (firecrackers, thunder, etc), new sounds and sights.

21. Hutokshi Ichhaporia/Simba - tentative at first.

22. Sharon Squires/Rupa, Bhura, Muskaan, Ravi - None of the four like anything new and

hang back from new things including toys.

23. Vidya & Samik Biswas/Grumpy - Grumpy is super duper inquisitive. Everything and anything new has to be - absolutely has to be - inspected and to pass her seal of approval. Especially if it is something that has to be brought inside the house. Parcels and other deliveries have to be sniffed to perfection. Any new machines or fixtures in the house that look or sound weird have to be inspected from close range. Once she familiarizes herself with them, she doesn't give two hoots :) The only thing that has managed to get her super duper angry till date is the moving disc from inside our DVD player. She would bite any DVD that goes in or comes out. Chomp chomp! We hate you!

24. Caroline Walker/India - She is curious about new things, people, places etc. I have

driven cross-country with her and I think she enjoyed it very much.

Page 64: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

64

25. Cherida Hivale/Blackie, Mud Pack, Whitey, Skinny Goldy - Blackie: not too concerned. Mud Pack: curious but not overly concerned. Whitey: highly curious. Skinny Goldy: curious but cautious.

26. Mira Shihadeh/Bindi - She is on the fearful side with new things...not sure if this is a

result of being a street dog, found as a puppy.

27. Colleen Doyle and Greg Hitz/Cinnamon - She is nervous in response to anything new. The first time we took her swimming she refused to go in the water. After a little bit of coaxing she went in and loved it.

28. Monique Nerman/Tommy Goldeneyes - Very confident. Can be protective.

29. Anand M N/Shiro - Curious.

30. Ashwini Kakkeri/Benzi, Browny and Boomer – Benzi was the curious kind, she was

smart. Browny: Curiousity got the better of her. Always came back with a wasp sting…Boomer loves to explore. Is more like Browny.

31. Lisa Warden/Lady Penelope Chatterjee, Button Sengupta, Mr. Shakespeare Patel - Very

interested.

32. Rajvi Mariwala/Tequila, Gumps - Tequila: very scared and can range from visible distress such as panting and sweating paw-pads to just increasing distance between herself and the object/person causing concern. Gumps: wary but all right quite soon.

33. Rohitangshu Das/Bush - Reaction to anything is very prompt but depend on the situation.

34. Manik J. Godbole/Tommy, Chinky - Tommy will like to explore, although cautiously, will

sniff, if finds it harmless will think of it as a play thing, might pull, scratch it, try to open it apart and explore more. Chinky will growl at the new thing, run away from it, then will take her time, approach with tail all tugged in, sniff around, even though it’s harmless will try to avoid anything new.

35. Ambar Kumar Gupta/PP - sniffing, backing away.

36. Charles Twigg & family/Jake - Cautious and untrusting.

37. Madhu S.K./Foxy - Initially scared and on her guard. If we get her to relax and introduce

it, she gets used to it. Otherwise she takes her own time to inspect it.

38. Vishakha Gangadharan/Twitches - She's curious about everything. New toy = unbounded joy. New food she’s discovered = even more unbounded joy. She will play with newly discovered food like a dried fig or a piece of orange. New people = she is

Page 65: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

65

curious but takes a while to warm up. New places = very curious. Will explore new houses thoroughly. As long as her human is with her. New objects = curious.

39. Saswati Mukerji/Fudge, Charm, Minx, Rumpus, Zorro, Pebbles, Shaka, Scamp, Rudy,

Chloe, Chutki and Husky - Barking generally. Reaches a crescendo as there are so many of them.

40. Sarabjeet Kaur/Angel - Curious at home. Sceptical or sharp depending on the size of the

thing when outside.

41. Ramya Bala/Sandy - He is usually curious and wanting to explore and will accept it if he likes it.

42. Tina Carver D’Souza/Raju, Deepa - Both dogs will alert us of anything that they have

never seen before. Sometimes in the middle of the night! Raju never barks, but he is the only dog in the neighborhood that kept barking non-stop when a big banyan tree was about to fall. He has alerted us when scorpions were in the yard.

43. Lalitprabha Jadhav & Vidhyut Kargutkar/Perky, Kolaveri - Perky is very adaptable and

depends on us to adjust the new situation so she can best adapt to it. Kolaveri is very suspicious and barks at new stuff or can show indifference in some cases. She barks at ants or spiders if she spots any moving around!

44. Rajashree Khalap/Kiba, Kimaya - Kimaya loves new toys. Kiba used to love new toys

but has lately become suspicious when given something new, except new rope toys which he loves. He ignores all the new balls he’s been given and even moves away if they’re thrown at him, preferring to play with the old ones. He is 18 months old. Both accept their winter tees but Kimaya doesn’t like her raincoat and it’s unlikely Kiba will accept one at all. Their reaction to new people visiting our house depends on whether they are my guests or workers/delivery men. Outside the house they are sometimes curious about strangers but not friendly. Kiba is hyper-alert about new people met in our building compound and even takes a step towards them to look at them more closely, which often alarms them. He may even bark at them, something I’m trying to strongly discourage.

45. Aditya Panda/Robin - Highly suspicious.

Page 66: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

66

L. Alertness

1. Minna Lintu & J. Desai/Roshni & Puru - Higher for Roshni than for Puru, although sometimes Puru notices a person in the courtyard first.

2. Rochelle Lucas/Kala - High

3. Nolin Chitnis/Coffee & Bruze - Very alert. Make excellent excellent security dogs. Dogs

howling in your neighborhood at midnight are a testament to this.

4. Lakshmi Ravishankar/Puffy – Very alert

5. Mandi Wagner/Winnie - Winnie is always alert and knows if something is wrong or out of place. She will investigate noises immediately. It is nearly possible for anyone or anything to sneak up on her. Her attention is always trained on her surroundings.

6. Amy Manoharan/Rex: Very very alert to the point of being annoying. We live next to a

busy rural high way and near a truck detailing place, so every time a truck rumbles down the road he barks. You would think he would figure out the sound by now considering the fact he hears it dozens of times a day…but he doesn't. Each time requires barking. And he really really doesn't like the mail man.

Page 67: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

67

7. Shawna Weaver/Priya: Very alert all the time.

8. Anil Tiwari ,Dr Neelam Tewari & Yash Tewari/Jackie, Jimmy, Fluffy, Rottie, Brownie, Chottu, Vodka, Martini, Johnny, Grant, Bacardi, Sweety, Chhoti, Hyna, Maria: Phew no doubt on that. HIGHLY ALERT ALWAYS.

9. Aditi Shankar/Chloe, Rocket: Chloe: medium. Rocket - extremely high.

10. Pavithra Chandramowlisharan/Shiva: This guy is very alert, he knows where my dad is

and what he is doing all the time. He used to recognize the person standing outside the gate even when he used to be inside the house hidden from the view. He can also listen very well as he used to hear the sound of my dad's 2-wheeler and wag his tail knowing who was back home. At the beach. Shiva can be seen concentrating on the sand, looking for lobsters. Of course, he has never caught a single one but you can see the intense concentration.

11. Amrendra Singh/Rocky: Very very alert to the extent that every bark on the street or any

unknown noise would make him raise his ears and become extra attentive. He would run on the roof and check it out and barks followed. They make perfect guard dogs. No one would dare enter your house without your consent. He never bites anyone but no one would want to sneak into my house in the night even if Rocky is deep asleep. Astoundingly amazing hearing and smelling skills.

12. Dilnaz Hiramaneck-Upadhyay/Tyson, Bruce Lee, Princess: Very very alert at all times,

especially when I'm alone at home with them.

13. Dr.Srilakshmi Amirtheswaran/Robin, Maya, Tehya: Extremely alert

14. Brittany Powell and Greg Teitelbaum/Mira: Mira is fairly alert, especially when she is in a playful mood. She will often run to the window and peer out at passersby or when she hears and noise close by. She will also guard her crate against the cat if the cat is nearby and trying to get to her food. Loud noises and things out of the ordinary will cause her to investigate.

15. Andy Roper/Vaga: About as alert as any dog.

16. Ruth Schneider/Incredible Hope: Extremely alert. I deemed her to be a sound and sight

hound from day one. I am not sure if INDogs are known for exceptional senses, but Hope has an incredibly advanced sense of sight, even in the dark. There is not a squirrel within a two block area that she can't pick out on our walks, be it tracked by sight or smell.

17. Randi Lildballe/Otto: Very very much. His sight is very good and he sees everything and

reacts to it.

Page 68: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

68

18. Payal Ray/Rocket: Very alert ! We know who will ring the door bell before the bell

actually is heard. This is understood seeing Rocket's expression, sway of the tail and nature of the bark.

19. Neha Arora/Champ & Jebo: Both dogs are extremely alert, any new sound, thing, person

elicits immediate response.

20. Elizabeth Abraham/Angel, Blacky, Brandy, Keiko, Max, Mindy, Millie, Parsley: Excellent

21. Hutokshi Ichhaporia/Simba: good.

22. Sharon Squires/Rupa, Bhura, Muskaan, Ravi: They are extremely alert and suspicious. They have very good eyesight. Above the railroad bed where we walk there are "creepers." These strange people who live up there. I don't like them. Rupa knows about creepers. When we approach that area she can almost actually see through trees up there. She can spot creepers at 100 yards. I am totally being serious. She makes me feel safe up there. Ja bi hates them also. But Rupa spots them much faster! It has to be seen to be believed. Rupa impresses the hell out of me.

23. Vidya & Samik Biswas/Grumpy: Grumpy is one alert dog. And we aren't saying this

because we love her, but simply because she has this incredible sense of hearing and of course smell. She seems to believe that duty comes first. And she would do anything to guard her home and humans. The slightest noise around the house - rustling leaves, papers flying around - things we humans cannot hear, she does. And she's up and ready to alert us within a fraction of a second. When the music in our apartment elevator goes off four floors below, she starts to bark knowing fully well that the elevator is something used by strangers to approach our home. She can even hear footsteps down two floors.

24. Caroline Walker/India: She is extremely alert. She barks though the door at any noise in

the hallway of our apartment building. She is also very aware of the people around us when she is walking on leash.

25. Cherida Hivale/Blackie: Highly alert; Mud Pack: Highly alert; Whitey: Extremely alert;

Skinny Goldy: Highly alert.

26. Mira Shihadeh/Bindi: Very very alert to sound and smell and mood of owner.

27. Colleen Doyle and Greg Hitz/Cinnamon: Very alert. She is aware of everything that is going on!

28. Monique Nerman/Tommy Goldeneyes: Very alert.

29. Anand M N/Shiro: Very high. Very good eyesight, good enough for a 5-acre property.

Page 69: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

69

30. Ashwini Kakkeri/Benzi, Browny and Boomer: Benzi, Browny: Hunted rat a couple of

times. Boomer: quite alert. Figures out family vehicles, people approaching the house even before they ring the bell.

31. Lisa Warden/Lady Penelope Chatterjee, Button Sengupta, Mr. Shakespeare Patel:

Hyper-alert.

32. Rajvi Mariwala/Tequila, Gumps: Tequila: on constant alert! Gumps: very alert.

33. Rohitangshu Das/Bush: Bush is very alert especially in the night, any little sound and he is up with his ears perked.

34. Manik J. Godbole/Tommy, Chinky: Chinky very alert at all hours of day and night. At

night she growls at the slightest noise of our society gate. Tommy, is alert but doesn’t immediately react.

35. Ambar Kumar Gupta/PP: Very aware of people coming to our flat even while they are in

the elevator!

36. Charles Twigg & family/Jake: Always alert and ready to run

37. Madhu S.K./Foxy: Very alert. Sleeps very little!

38. Vishakha Gangadharan/Twitches: She gets a 150/100 here. No sound goes unheard. Before she learned "no bark " living, her barking at everything that made a sound was hellish. EXTREMELY alert and observant.

39. Saswati Mukerji/Fudge, Charm, Minx, Rumpus, Zorro, Pebbles, Shaka, Scamp, Rudy,

Chloe, Chutki and Husky: Highly alert. The slightest sound or disturbance and they alert us.

40. Sarabjeet Kaur/Angel: 4 on a scale of 5

41. Ramya Bala/Sandy: Very alert. He barks whenever he thinks something is suspicious

(which isn't a bad thing, as he is my grandma’s companion and guard).

42. Tina Carver D’Souza/Raju, Deepa: Both very alert

43. Lalitprabha Jadhav & Vidhyut Kargutkar/Perky, Kolaveri: Perky is highly alert and Kolaveri alert to any sounds even to faint knocks on the door we can’t hear.

44. Rajashree Khalap/Kiba, Kimaya: Highly alert, they react to everything happening in the

lobby outside our apartment, to dogs down in the compound and even in the street

Page 70: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

70

outside. Specially at night if we return from somewhere Kiba seems to sense our presence even from five floors up, and we hear him start to bark. I don’t know whether this is coincidental or he can actually hear or smell us from so far up. On the beach they seem to recognize faraway dogs that are just specks to me. But Kiba has sometimes surprised me by not reacting to visitors during the afternoon when he’s sleepy. In general he seems to take cues from me. If he sees me usher the person in, he may pay no further attention to her/him.

45. Aditya Panda/Robin: Extremely high

Page 71: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

71

M. Abilities as security dogs How do Indies perform as watchdogs and guard dogs? (Watchdog = alerts owner to intruder presence; guard dog = attacks intruders)

1. Minna Lintu & J. Desai/Roshni & Puru: Roshni does a thorough job informing about movements and sounds, Puru is too young to know yet, no info on what either would do if we were attacked. Both react quickly to people knocking on the gate or coming in to the courtyard and alert the entire house with their barking. Roshni takes it a bit too far at times, as people walking past the gate can launch her into a tirade. So as a watch dog both are excellent. We haven't needed to test their guard dog qualities yet, luckily. Roshni has however raised her hackles and growled at two or three persons while I have walked her late in the night or early in the morning - usually she doesn't react to a lone person at all after the initial suspicious glance.

2. Rochelle Lucas/Kala: Kala does not bark at all and so not ideal as for security. She

would protect us in a situation if required.

Page 72: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

72

3. Nolin Chitnis/Coffee and Bruze: Excellent. Always alert. Also have sufficient strength and stamina to fend off intruders and attackers. I have seen people who are not scared of Eurobreeds but fear INDogs and INDog-mixes. If anyone has any doubts contact me. I will take you to a very old person in my society who was attacked when he got too close.

4. Lakshmi Ravishankar/Puffy: I think it is programmed in her DNA. I think she would make a good security dog.

5. Mandi Wagner/Winnie: Winnie is a superb watchdog, as she is always aware of her

surroundings. Even small noises will pique her attention and she will investigate. She usually knows when someone is outside our home before we do.

6. Amy Manoharan/Rex: Great. He wouldn't let anyone in the house/yard without

permission. No way. He also is very alert for things that go near the chickens. He’s run off a few coyotes, racoons, and hawks as well. Hes a great security dog that's for sure.

7. Shawna Weaver/Priya: Probably wouldn't be a good guard dog, trained to be friendly.

8. Anil Tiwari ,Dr Neelam Tewari & Yash Tewari/Jackie, Jimmy, Fluffy, Rottie, Brownie,

Chottu, Vodka, Martini, Johnny, Grant, Bacardi, Sweety, Chhoti, Hyna, Maria: Great. While at my farm house, about 5 or 6 are left loose the whole night and they do a great job as security. They can also sniff/sense a rat about 700 feet away. Chottu is highly protective of our house. No unknown person can be around our house if he does not like the guest. Brownie is highly protective about us.

9. Aditi Shankar/Chloe, Rocket: Capable, but do not know how to attack

10. Pavithra Chandramowlisharan/Shiva: Shiva can be trained to be a security dog as he is

very alert and can distinguish between family members and outsiders very well. With some training, he will make a very good security dog. However, this guy is very soft and will not bite anyone, so if that is considered as a requirement, then Shiva will not qualify.

11. Amrendra Singh/Rocky: Just perfect security dogs. Since they are over protective of

their humans and their home they make amazing guard dogs even without any training. It’s their instinct to protect whatever they could get from the mean streets.

12. Dilnaz Hiramaneck-Upadhyay/Tyson, Bruce Lee, Princess: Bruce and Princess are

excellent watch dogs. Super alert and feisty. Tyson is alert, but will not take the initiative to charge unless there's a serious threat.

Page 73: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

73

13. Dr.Srilakshmi Amirtheswaran/Robin, Maya, Tehya: Males make better security dogs although females are just as watchful. But males are not as friendly and are better for security.

14. Brittany Powell and Greg Teitelbaum/Mira: Mira might make a good security dog if

trained to act like one. She could certainly learn more aggressive commands and behavior but we have not trained her to be aggressive.

15. Andy Roper/Vaga: A good bark. She has twice stepped in to threaten people who were

acting aggressively to me.

16. Ruth Schneider/Incredible Hope: As gentle as Hope is (and she is loves to snuggle), I wouldn't want to be the person to come between her and one of our family members. She has defended us on walks with her mere growl that has sent larger dogs running away. It's a comfort to know that she would protect us.

17. Randi Lildballe/Otto: Yes! Not much will be under his radar!

18. Payal Ray/Rocket: As I mentioned earlier - INDIES should be seriously trained by the

police to be in the dog squad. They will be fantastic and also off the roads.

Page 74: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

74

19. .Neha Arora/Champ & Jebo: Champ: His wariness of new people, and his alertness will

make him a great security guard. However, this will be limited to raising an alarm. He likely to go hide from a new person. Jebo: She does start barking when things are not right, but she is usually too friendly to be a good guard dog. She will welcome a stranger home.

20. Elizabeth Abraham/Angel, Blacky, Brandy, Keiko, Max, Mindy, Millie, Parsley: Excellent.

21. Hutokshi Ichhaporia/Simba: Barks when a stranger is at the door but is a little too

friendly to be security dog.

22. Sharon Squires/Rupa, Bhura, Muskaan, Ravi: Guardians of property and people with no formal training...I'd bet my life on it. These dogs are aces. You don't need all this lag time for them to mature. Once the bond is there, you have your guard dog.

23. Vidya & Samik Biswas/Grumpy: A terrific watch dog, Grumpy would do anything to guard

her humans and home from strangers.

24. Caroline Walker/India: She is very protective of me and senses if I am feeling fear or anxiety. She barks at noises in the hallway of our apartment building.

25. Cherida Hivale/Blackie: Extremely good. Mud Pack: Low. Whitey: High. Skinny Goldy:

High.

26. Mira Shihadeh/Bindi: I think she is a great security dog, barks at sounds outside the door.

27. Colleen Doyle and Greg Hitz/Cinnamon: Cinnamon is a great guard dog. Her bark is very loud and she is larger than typical INDogs (60 pounds). Not sure what she would be like if she actually had to defend us.

28. Monique Nerman/Tommy Goldeneyes: Protective and growls at weird-looking and

strong-smelling people. Watchful of sounds and people passing. Territorial. However, not sure he would bite someone who would attack me.

29. Anand M N/Shiro: Good watchdog. Not intimidating though. If you partner it with a big

dog, would be better.

30. Ashwini Kakkeri/Benzi, Browny and Boomer: Benzi, browny, Boomer: great!!! I can stay home alone without fear.

31. Lisa Warden/Lady Penelope Chatterjee, Button Sengupta, Mr. Shakespeare Patel:

Excellent as alarms!! Major barkers. Shakers is probably the only one who might actually charge an intruder though.

Page 75: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

75

32. Rajvi Mariwala/Tequila, Gumps: Tequila: very good. Will bark at night in case there is a

sound out of the ordinary. Did raise the alarm when there was an attempted intrusion in the middle of the night. Watching the gate from a perch is her favourite pastime. Gumps: Below average.

33. Rohitangshu Das/Bush: Bush is very much a watch dog rather than guard dog. That

means he can alert when any intruder is entering but he will not personally attack him.

34. Manik J. Godbole/Tommy, Chinky: Tommy definitely will protect me, come what may. I feel even Chinky will try her best. They might not be trained as security dogs, but by instinct, yes they provide me security.

35. Ambar Kumar Gupta/PP: She has not been trained as a guard dog.

36. Charles Twigg & family/Jake: I don't see too much of an ability as a guard dog.

37. Madhu S.K./Foxy: Pretty good I would say. She is not the usual barking type. She barks

only when required. Good to know that she does not bark at dogs passing by!

38. Vishakha Gangadharan/Twitches: Good. Very alert. Loyal. Wary of strangers . At three months old she attacked a person who was acting like he was going to kick me. Just went at him also she has hated him ever since. She will attack people (not people she trusts ) who try to hit me even in jest. She's protective of Kartik; no one should hug him or hit him.

39. Saswati Mukerji/Fudge, Charm, Minx, Rumpus, Zorro, Pebbles, Shaka, Scamp, Rudy,

Chloe, Chutki and Husky: More to alert. Not trained to attack, but as I said 10 dogs is quite a deterrent.

40. Sarabjeet Kaur/Angel: Very good watch dog. However has had an abused past so not

very confidant of her ability to be a security dog. She was rescued as a stray at 2 years age.

41. Ramya Bala/Sandy: He is not very muscular or menacing looking (in fact he is skinny

sweetheart) but due to his alertness he usually warns us of anything he considers a threat.

42. Tina Carver D’Souza/Raju, Deepa: Raju protects when he feels a threat. Deepa works

full time.

43. Lalitprabha Jadhav & Vidhyut Kargutkar/Perky, Kolaveri: Very good guard dogs; both are very alert to intruders and any trouble makers.

Page 76: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

76

44. Rajashree Khalap/Kiba, Kimaya: Very loud barkers and excellent security dogs. They gang up to intimidate workers and delivery men who come to the house. I don’t know whether they would bite an intruder but I wouldn’t rule out the possibility. Recently a painter in our apartment claimed Kimaya nipped him, but I was not present and feel he may have been exaggerating. My earlier dog Lalee once nipped a delivery man who she felt walked too close to me, but it was a very inhibited bite. In the building compound both Kiba and Kimaya react instantly to a new person and pull to get close, stare and sniff (which I don’t allow as it alarms people). Kiba raises his hackles when he sees strangers. People seem to find Kiba’s appearance intimidating though he is not large.

45. Aditya Panda/Robin: Extremely high. Extremely alert watchdogs. Big males and packs

can be lethal guard dogs against unwanted intruders. If aggression is channeled through training, will not hesitate to bite intruders.

46. Yvonne de Kock/Leela, Rishi - Good watchdogs. Very sensitive to human body signals

too, they will pick up human emotions and react e.g. will bark if someone has an angry disposition or if this is reflected in the person's gait (walking or running), even at a distance.

Page 77: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

77

47. Rajashree Khakap - Observation on village INDogs: They always bark loudly to warn people away from their owner’s property. If I intrude into the owner’s house they may bite. I haven’t put this to the test. But though they are excellent watchdogs, their potential as guard dogs or attack dogs must be hampered by the pressure to be non-aggressive around humans. Tolerance from humans is a necessity for survival for free-ranging dogs. I have usually found that urban free-rangers bite only as a last resort, giving many warning signals first.

N. Socialization to other dogs Free-ranging Indies are ‘pack’ animals and perfectly socialized to other dogs. It seems safe to assume that how pet Indies relate to other dogs depends more on early experiences and socialization than on heredity.

1. Minna Lintu & J. Desai/Roshni & Puru: Roshni - Not interested, Puru - Friendly, curious, playful. Roshni is indifferent to most dogs and doesn't introduce herself. She will do a walk-by-sniff if the opportunity presents itself, but other than that she tries to ignore them. Some dogs at the end of our street have brought out a completely different mentality in her; she rushes at them with hackles raised and growls until they move off HER street. Puru has not had contact with other dogs yet as "our" street dogs consist of an older female and male, of which the male is the one who chases most dogs off the street (they are relatively friendly towards Roshni though and we have in fact chased off strange dogs as a trio with Roshni and me as his backup sidekicks). So until Puru has been snipped he doesn't get to go out unless I'm sure both dogs are elsewhere to minimize the chances of him getting a bad impression of other dogs.

Page 79: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

79

2. Rochelle Lucas/Kala: Uninterested at best. Kala does not get along with other dogs and would take time to adjust to a family with a second dog.

3. Dominique Brand/LittleDog: What can I say here. LittleDog, loves everybody and every

dog. He wants to speak to everybody and be best friends. He loves all other dogs and we have never, EVER seen or heard him growl… except in his sleep when he’s dreaming!! Which is most hilarious!

4. Nolin Chitnis/Coffee & Bruze: Possible but takes time and patience.

5. Lakshmi Ravishankar/ Puffy: Unfriendly with most dogs. Strangely, some dogs seem to

evoke friendship and bonding instincts buried somewhere deep in her psyche. One thing is for sure, if she doesn't like a dog at first sight, she isn't ever going to like him or her again. By the way, all the dogs she has taken fancy to so far are of the opposite gender.

6. Mandi Wagner/Winnie: Winnie loves other dogs and even though we adopted her at 3

1/2 months old, she was socialized relatively quickly. She thrives off of interactions with other dogs, and enjoys the local dog park immensely. In situations of aggression she keeps her distance and does not engage.

7. Amy Manoharan/Rex: BAD. Rex showed issues with other dogs before he came to us

and unfortunately that really hasn't gotten any better. He always reacts with snarling, raised hair, and loud ferocious barking. If he was near another dog he would probably attack them. We briefly had a 14-week old black and tan coon hound puppy but Rex was so aggressive to the puppy we had to find her a new home. He kept trying to stalk her and he bit her on the back and neck. We think he would have probably hurt her if we had left them alone together. He shouldn't be this bad with dogs considering the fact that back in India he would be in a pack and his behavior wouldn't be tolerated by other dogs. We wish he would get along with other dogs but he just seems to hate them.

8. Shawna Weaver/Priya: Very social, nice, never aggressive.

9. Anil Tiwari ,Dr Neelam Tewari & Yash Tewari/Jackie, Jimmy, Fluffy, Rottie, Brownie,

Chottu, Vodka, Martini, Johnny, Grant, Bacardi, Sweety, Chhoti, Hyna, Maria: Puppies get on well and very easily when socialized from the start. Since at my home they share the same place and love as my other dogs, Mastiffs, Bordeauxs and Labs. Easy so far.

10. Aditi Shankar/Chloe, Rocket: Both socialize better with bigger or same size males.

11. Pavithra Chandramowlisharan/Shiva: Shiva is generally neither warm nor cold towards

other dogs. He generally avoids them. He does not even defend himself when stray dogs on the road attack him in a pack. This might be due to domestication and hence lacking the skills to survive on the road. He is generally scared of other dogs - both pets

Page 80: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

80

and strays on the road and hence avoids them completely. He does take advantage of very weak and timid dogs and picks fights with them.

12. Amrendra Singh/Rocky: The dogs he has known on the streets he loves playing with in

the park, running and wrestling with them. Since he is a very strong and muscular dog he tries to bully them from time to time but they don't mind it and the moment he goes for his daily evening play at the park this couple of street Indies would run around him and follow him to the park to play. Very social and it’s amazing to see this bonding between them. But I have also seen that Rocky is not very friendly with strange dogs especially male ones and on occasion he also barks at female dogs whom he has never seen. I think it’s just the genetic instincts that make him so wary of dogs he has never seen. He is smaller in size to my friend's huge Golden Retriever called Rio. I tried to make Rocky friends with Rio and Rio is a superfriendly calm dog and wanted to play with Rocky. But it couldn't happen as Rocky was not scared at all and wanted to jump on Rio and have a fight. So I guess these dogs need their time to get accustomed with new dogs but once the bond is made it never breaks.

13. Dilnaz Hiramaneck-Upadhyay/Tyson, Bruce Lee, Princess: Tyson does not show

aggression or love towards other dogs, unless he truly hates them, whereas Bruce is friendly only with those that he’s known since he was a pup. Princess has her favorites.

14. Dr.Srilakshmi Amirtheswaran/Robin, Maya, Tehya: Better when started early. As they

grow older, socializing becomes harder.

15. Brittany Powell and Greg Teitelbaum/Mira: Mira loves to play with other dogs and we have tried to train her to sit and wait for permission to play with other dogs or people. She is responding well to this training. She will wrestle, run, bait, chase, jump, etc. with other dogs in a very playful way. She loves to run after toys and race around. She has never been aggressive toward other dogs.

Page 81: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

81

Playfighting

16. Andy Roper/Vaga: Generally Ok and enjoys being out with friends new and old. At home she keeps herself to herself.

17. Ruth Schneider/Incredible Hope: Hope shows no signs of intimidation with other dogs.

She is not aggressive and when playing with other dogs will often submit and lie on her back showing playfulness. She will however nip when inappropriately approached by another dog, clearly setting the boundaries in a firm yet non-confrontational way.

18. Randi Lildballe/Otto: No but I don’t know if this is due to the young age when he was

taken from his mother, or his personality. But he cannot be around other dogs. There are a few he accepts but most dogs he shows aggression towards.

19. Payal Ray/Rocket: This is a strange one...Rocket loves the "girls". He has a string of

lovely lady friends! But when it comes to the males, he does not like them AT ALL. And if they are black in colour or are dalmatians....then that’s it !! He likes German Shepherds as we had one (who Rocket would torture).

20. Neha Arora/Champ & Jebo: Both love other dogs - absolutely love them to bits. They are

always looking to play, however they don't completely understand when the other dogs are not as friendly.

21. Elizabeth Abraham/Angel, Blacky, Brandy, Keiko, Max, Mindy, Millie, Parsley: Depends

on the early introduction and availability of playmates.

Page 82: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

82

22. Hutokshi Ichhaporia/Simba: Gets along well with our spitz who is the more dominant dog,

tolerates the street dogs who stay in our area but is quite territorial & doesn't take kindly to other dogs. Is quite capable of fighting if left alone.

23. Sharon Squires/Rupa, Bhura, Muskaan, Ravi: They are good with their own. I don't know

how they'd be with strangers. Rupa is a boss. She is very aggressive to the others. But she is not psycho. She knows when she took it too far. But she can be quite mean sometimes.

24. Vidya & Samik Biswas/Grumpy: Slightly dicey here, are we? :) Grumpy amazed us with

her traits in this aspect. We were always worried that she wouldn't adjust to another dog/puppy at home since she was spoilt and the apple of our eyes. Not so. The one time we got a 1 month old puppy to foster, Grumpy made sure she played big sister to her, played with her the entire time and even slept with her, comforting her whenever she cried. Then we thought she would never be able to adjust with bigger, fully grown dogs. Not so again. We got this 2 year old dog to foster at home recently and to our utter surprise, Grumpy charmed her with her compassion and understanding. All she demands from new dogs coming home is that they play with her. For everything else, our baby has been gifted with an extremely big heart and she wouldn't mind sharing any of her space and food with another needy dog. Having said all this, we have noticed that she isn't quite alright with pedigreed dogs - especially labradors and golden retrievers. They are noisy and jumpy and she dislikes dogs that bark unnecessarily and get on her nerves. There was this one time she even took on a golden retriever nearly twice her size and bit his tail (and his ego) to shape. Not something we're proud about, but we're sure there was a reason - and we did realize that he was after her throughout, literally barking away in her ear, following her everywhere. Well... :)

25. Caroline Walker/India: She is generally not good with other dogs in spite of the fact that

she was socialized with other dogs from an early age. She is also a bit of a bully...picking on small or timid dogs. She has had dog friends over the years though...for some reason she bonds with certain types of dogs.

26. Cherida Hivale/Blackie: Choosy - friends with a lot of street dogs but aggressive with

leashed dogs. Mud Pack: Friendly with street dogs - extremely aggressive with leashed dogs. Whitey: Cautiously friendly. Skinny Goldy: Not very friendly.

27. Mira Shihadeh/Bindi: This is where I have a problem. She does not like most dogs and I

can never predict her reaction to a dog, could be friendly one moment then want to fight the next.

28. Colleen Doyle and Greg Hitz/Cinnamon: She is obsessed with other dogs. We have

taken her to the dog park since she was 4 months old and she loves other dogs. If we see a dog walking she insists on saying hi.

Page 83: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

83

29. Monique Nerman/Tommy Goldeneyes: Tommy has a "real dog" behavior which

European dogs and dog owners are not used to. He pounces, growls a little, walks proudly towards the other dog, and keeps a safe distance until all is clear and both dogs can start sniffing each other. As a young dog he only had another dog as a pack, and didn't really learn how to play with other dogs until he was 2 years old.Meeting big packs of dogs on the beach he submits quickly. He can be quite bossy to puppies. Very protective of his dog friends.

30. Anand M N/Shiro: Very poor with other females.

31. Ashwini Kakkeri/Benzi, Browny and Boomer: Benzi was AWESOME. She earned

respect. Her commanding walk was enough...other dogs just respected her, period. Browny: Not really. Boomer: Has friends in every lane/apartment complex, new areas. Makes friends everywhere.

32. Lisa Warden/Lady Penelope Chatterjee, Button Sengupta, Mr. Shakespeare Patel:

Button and Penelope like to play with other loose dogs (i.e. back in Vietnam on the beach). Shakers is a dominant bully type. I have seen him attack dogs while off leash soon after we got him so I don't think he is an off-leash candidate any more, unless I get lots of help from a professional trainer. When he was a free-roaming dog at IIM, his behaviour was quite different -- dominant but much more easy- going and tolerant. I suspect his transfer into a life of captivity has had an effect on him similar to what happens to dogs that are kept chained for long periods -- they become more aggressive.

33. Rajvi Mariwala/Tequila, Gumps: Tequila: not okay around dogs unless they are

completely disinterested in her. If they show interest - she snarles and keeps them away.Gumps: well socialized with most other dogs. He would go out and play with stray doggie friends.

34. Rohitangshu Das/Bush: His greatest quality is that he makes friends with other "Indie"

dogs very easily. He makes some dog sounds & other local dogs get attracted. Loves to stay outdoor rather than indoor. On a few occasions, he invited a few of his stray friends to lunch when kept alone.

35. Manik J. Godbole/Tommy, Chinky: both my dogs are socialized, although they don’t

make friends with each and every dog, but tolerence level is good enough. My experience is that my dogs make friends with street dogs more easily than pedigreed owned dogs.

Page 84: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

84

36. Ambar Kumar Gupta/PP: She is a Gupta. No way she is a dog!

37. Charles Twigg & family/Jake: Seems ready to acccept other animals. Maybe too playful at first.

38. Madhu S.K./Foxy: Pretty good. I made it a point to introduce her to dogs from the 4th

month (3rd month is when we adopted her from the streets.) She now has about 5 stray, 2 labradors, 2 German shepherds, 1 rottie pup to socialize with. Among the 5 strays, there are 2 females she is pretty close to. They help her gain confidence and interact with her in exchange for petting from me! Recently from the past 1 month, since Foxy is in her dominating age the strays growl and keep Foxy grounded! Am happy to see her learning how to respect elders and give space to other dogs.

39. Vishakha Gangadharan/Twitches: If the other dog behaves (ie does not snarl) she is

great. Has lots of dog friends. She is SCARED TO DEATH of overbearing puppies that vibrate with puppy energy.

40. Saswati Mukerji/Fudge, Charm, Minx, Rumpus, Zorro, Pebbles, Shaka, Scamp, Rudy,

Chloe, Chutki and Husky: Amongst themselves they are more or less socialized, there are the occasional scraps. With other dogs they bristle, since when they go out together they think they are the special forces.

41. Sarabjeet Kaur/Angel: Low. I have seen her struggling for survival when people would

beat her and other dogs would attack her as she was sickly and skinny.

Page 85: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

85

42. Ramya Bala/Sandy: He is extremely friendly to other dogs. Gets along really well and absolutely LOVES other canine company.

43. Tina Carver D’Souza/Raju, Deepa: Raju loves to play with the neighbour dogs. Deepa

won’t tolerate other dogs (other than our free roaming dog Brutus). Deepa despises other female dogs!

44. Lalitprabha Jadhav & Vidhyut Kargutkar/Perky, Kolaveri: Not very social to other dogs

except the ‘pack’.

45. Rajashree Khalap/Kiba, Kimaya: Kiba is very curious about other dogs and loves interacting with them though he isn’t super-friendly. He tends to bark at and bully timid dogs. Kimaya loves interacting with free-roaming dogs but tends to be fearful/aggressive towards owned, leashed dogs of any breed. She has improved enormously after attending dog meets and trainer courses where she was kept in the company of other dogs. Both my dogs dislike dogs who blunder up to them directly without any doggy protocol of sniffing etc.

46. Aditya Panda/Robin: High. Males can be very alpha, but in general will socialize very

well with any other dog given ample time and particularly if raised alongside the other dog/s or introduced to the other dog as a pup.

47. Yvonne de Kock/Leela, Rishi - Very clear in their signalling to other dogs, set the

parameters of interaction even at a distance. They are unmistakeably traditional in conveying appropriate body signals.

Page 86: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

86

O. Behaviour with other animals e.g. cats Depends more on socialization than heredity

1. Minna Lintu & J. Desai/ Roshni & Puru - Roshni - Cats are chased vigorously. Puru -

Curious. Roshni will chase cats and has once cornered the wandering female cat that chooses to dine at our house every other day or so, but fortunately for the cat Roshni actually listened to the duet of NO!! and didn't harm her. Puru is curious about the cat but doesn't seem to consider it something to be chased.

2. Rochelle Lucas/Kala - All small animals are seen as prey (eg cats, rats, squirrels,

possums). It would be hard for Kala to live in a family with another smaller pet.

3. Nolin Chitnis/Coffee & Bruze - Cat chasers. Mice chasers. Bird chasers, Fly catchers. Everything that moves under the sun which they have not yet sniffed.

4. Lakshmi Ravishankar/Puffy - ‘go for the jugular' is her motto.

Page 87: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

87

5. Mandi Wagner/Winnie - Winnie does not understand other animals well, as she considers them prey. Her whole body will shake in response to seeing a cat, as her drive to chase is extremely strong. Bigger animals have not been introduced to her such as horses or cows.

6. Shawna Weaver/Priya - Curious about cats, gave them space, never threatened or

attacked them (even when attacked by a cat).

7. Anil Tiwari ,Dr Neelam Tewari & Yash Tewari/Jackie, Jimmy, Fluffy, Rottie, Brownie, Chottu, Vodka, Martini, Johnny, Grant, Bacardi, Sweety, Chhoti, Hyna, Maria - Never had a cat, but they chase squirrels and cats.

8. Aditi Shankar/Chloe, Rocket - Both love cats.

9. Pavithra Chandramowlisharan/Shiva - Shiva hates cats and mice and will chase them

until the end of his life. However, he gets scared when the cats start chasing him back, he will run for his life. I have seen him chase around crows. He has a habit of hitting roaches, ants and grasshoppers. But, only as long as they move. If they stop, he will also stop hunting them.

10. Amrendra Singh/Rocky - Since INDogs have lived on their own for thousands of years

and food has always been an issue I feel that they are very cautious with smaller animals and sometimes see them as food. I live in a place which has lots of greenery and forested area and sometimes I have cats, rodents, moles, monitor lizards, scorpions, tree frogs coming in to my garden and sometimes in the house. And what can I say but that they just entered the wrong neighborhood. Rocky wants to know who they are, where they are from, why they are here and wants to confront them. But if a cat is introduced to an INDog puppy from early stages then that's another story of friendship.

11. Dilnaz Hiramaneck-Upadhyay/Tyson, Bruce Lee, Princess: Princess shows anger and

hatred at first, but makes friends with those I rescue, after some time. Tyson is indifferent. I feel he knows that they're just temporary visitors. Bruce on the other hand will help me look after any animal or bird that I’ve rescued and brought home, especially if it’s a pup or a kitten (but only in the house, not outside). He sits with them and lets them cuddle up to him etc, but not when he's tired or sleepy. Bruce doesn’t let anyone other than me hug him while he's asleep.

12. Dr.Srilakshmi Amirtheswaran/Robin, Maya, Tehya: The male is very aggressive with

other animals. The females are merely curious and playful.

13. Brittany Powell and Greg Teitelbaum/Mira: Mira does well with out cat and has not shown any aggressive behavior. She will "guard" her crate when the cat attempts to get to her food bowl, but that is not in an aggressive way. She sometimes would like to play with the cat, but in general is submissive to the cat and avoids her.

Page 88: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

88

14. Andy Roper/Vaga: She has complete respect for pet cats and any animal bigger than

her.

15. Ruth Schneider/Incredible Hope: At any given time there could be as many as 6 or 7 dogs visiting with our immediate relatives on a Sunday afternoon. Hope is a good playmate, a respectful hostess and one of the gang. We also have a cat that gets along well with all of the family dogs.

16. Randi Lildballe/Otto: He has grown up with 2 cats and we have trained him to accept a

new cat but if he sees a cat on the street he see it as a catch and will try to get it (and would properly kill it if he where allowed). His hunting instinct is very strong.

17. Payal Ray/Rocket: Not much concerned.

18. Neha Arora/Champ & Jebo: They are both curious about frogs, haven't had much

exposure to other animals yet. I fostered a few kittens for a couple of days, and Champ was extremely curious about them and wanted to play. The kittens on the other were not as friendly. Jebo has never been around a cat.

19. Hutokshi Ichhaporia/Simba: Attacks and would easily kill a cat if it strayed in his path.

20. Sharon Squires/Rupa, Bhura, Muskaan, Ravi: I don't trust them with my cats in a pack.

But alone they are great. They must be taught and socialized. I don't let the cats near their food.

21. Vidya & Samik Biswas/Grumpy: Cats?!!!! Grumpy's mortal enemy! She has several cat

enemies in and around our apartment complex. She knows exactly where they pee, where they sleep and the kind of weird noises they make when they fight. We think she might do well if she were introduced to a kitten and the kitten were to grow up with her in the same house, but we woudn't take the chance.

22. Caroline Walker/India: She is not good with other types of animals...she barks and

lunges at cats, squirrels, etc.

23. Cherida Hivale/Blackie: Aggressive. Mud Pack: Aggressive with cats, friendly with my rats. Whitey: Aggressive with cats, tolerates my rats. Skinny Goldy: Aggressive with all other species.

24. Mira Shihadeh/Bindi: With cats, she likes to play and chase for the fun of it, but

otherwise quite aloof around them.

25. Colleen Doyle and Greg Hitz/Cinnamon: She raises her hackles at cats. There is a cat in the neighborhood that she is starting to become friends with so this is changing.

Page 89: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

89

26. Monique Nerman/Tommy Goldeneyes: Will chase cats. Will chase and try to kill sheep.

Will run after and bark at horses and cows, but will stop when I tell him to.

27. Anand M N/Shiro: Killed around 5 chickens, 1 duck, 1 turkey. The cat left the house because of her.

28. Ashwini Kakkeri/Benzi, Browny and Boomer: Benzi: LOVED CATS. Browny: nope.

Boomer: He is learning.

29. Lisa Warden/Lady Penelope Chatterjee, Button Sengupta, Mr. Shakespeare Patel: It depends a lot on the cats’ reactions. Around here there are many stray cats. The tough ones that stand their ground and hiss back -- the dogs keep their distance. Those that run off -- well, the dogs think they're just begging to be chased. I'm currently giving them a two-week chance to learn to get along with a kitten I've taken in. It's a highly controlled experiment.

30. Rajvi Mariwala/Tequila, Gumps: Tequila: dislikes most cats unless she has been

introduced to them when they were kittens. High prey drive. Gumps: stable/ non-reactive.

31. Rohitangshu Das/Bush: Bush has some personal enmity with cats and loves to chase them.

32. Manik J. Godbole/Tommy, Chinky: Cats are strictly the enemy for Chinky. Tommy

tolerates them, if the opportunity comes then as a pack member he too shoos them away.

33. Ambar Kumar Gupta/PP: Chases cats. Barks at goats.

34. Charles Twigg & family/Jake: He wants to play…(the cats don’t)

35. Madhu S.K./Foxy: Not much Interaction directly. But whenever she sees a cat on the

road, she wags her tail and waits to get introduced! Well, the cat always seem 'not' interested! :P With cows it‘s again trying to be a little frisky around them. I had a pigeon once at home for a couple of days, she was over-curious, ended up standing in front of the pigeon and exploring it from a foot away. I was confident that she was no way going to attack!

36. Vishakha Gangadharan/Twitches: Loves chasing birds. She used to be very respectful

towards cats until one of the stray cats I feed tried to scratch her for no reason. Now she keeps her distance but is pretty respectful still. Won't growl or bark and never bite. Curious with insects.

Page 90: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

90

37. Saswati Mukerji/Fudge, Charm, Minx, Rumpus, Zorro, Pebbles, Shaka, Scamp, Rudy, Chloe, Chutki and Husky: They don’t like cats. but my two outside dogs are very friendly with my little cat who stays in my courtyard.

38. Sarabjeet Kaur/Angel: Quite tolerant with cats at home. Chase instinct is visible with

stray cats outside, when she's on a walk.

39. Ramya Bala/Sandy: I have never observed this, so I can't really comment.

40. Tina Carver D’Souza/Raju, Deepa: I had to save a cat’s life once. They won’t allow other animals in the compound other than Brutus.

41. Lalitprabha Jadhav & Vidhyut Kargutkar/Perky, Kolaveri: Both friendly with pet cats.

Kolaveri seems to be more friends with the tomcat and hates the female for some reason. All outside creatures are strictly enemies.

42. Rajashree Khalap/Kiba, Kimaya: Kimaya lived with my two cats from the age of 5

months, but she plays rough and the cats don’t like it. She chases our building cats, I think it’s play as she doesn’t pounce if she gets close to one, just play-bows and barks. Kiba is nervous of cats specially after getting slapped by one. I wouldn’t leave them unsupervised with my cats though. They chase horses on the beach and now the unfortunate camel that has been brought there. Both dogs are nervous of cattle (probably because I am).

43. Aditya Panda/Robin: Highly intolerant unless socialized from very early age. 44. Rajashree Khalap: Observation about village INDogs – Most of the INDogs I’ve seen

around rural India are socialized to goats, chickens, cows and other domestic animals (not wild animals). Many are flock-guarding dogs. Dogs not used for livestock guarding may attack goats or poultry.

Page 91: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

91

P. Prey drive

1. Minna Lintu & J. Desai/Roshni & Puru: Very high. Roshni has a high prey drive and will

try to catch and kill anything from a cat to a mouse. The only known kill she has made was an unfortunate pigeon that wandered into our bedroom when she was around 6 months old while we were out getting groceries. Only thing left was feathers, half a wing and some blood. Puru seems to be more curious about the mice and rats that occasionally find their way into our kitchen, but Roshni goes into high alert whenever she hears the squeaks and tries to convince us that she just HAS to get out right now and get rid of the intruder. She has also rushed an adult pig with piglets but I'm unsure if that was territorial or prey-induced towards the piglets. Needless to say I almost had a heart attack when I saw the size of the mother pig and quickly retreated back inside the gate until she had gathered her brood and taken off. Both of them get excited when monkeys travel our courtyard walls and Roshni is trembling with the desire to try to catch them.

2. Rochelle Lucas/Kala: Very high

3. Nolin Chitnis/Coffee & Bruze: Very high

4. Mandi Wagner/Winnie: Winnie has an immense prey drive, and anything she sees that is

not canine and smaller than her is considered prey. Although, she got a hold of a bird once but just held it. She did no damage to the animal. She will chase squirrels, birds and especially cats. We have pet gerbils that are in a glass tank, and she will paw and bite at the glass if it is within her reach.

Page 92: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

92

5. Amy Manoharan/Rex: Way too high. I KNOW better than to trust him around anything

small. While he’s never hurt our chickens I take precautions so that he’s never allowed the chance to kill them. The only exception seems to be baby bunnies. He finds them out in the field and brings them to me…alive and unharmed.

6. Shawna Weaver/Priya: Minimal.

7. Anil Tiwari ,Dr Neelam Tewari & Yash Tewari/Jackie, Jimmy, Fluffy, Rottie, Brownie, Chottu, Vodka, Martini, Johnny, Grant, Bacardi, Sweety, Chhoti, Hyna, Maria: HIGH. They have more traits of wolves like hunting small preys (rats etc) in fields.

8. Pavithra Chandramowlisharan/Shiva: Very high. He loves to catch mice but I have never

seen him eat any. He holds them in his mouth. I have not seen him preying on other animal.

9. Amrendra Singh/Rocky: Raw instincts are abundant in Rocky. For example when I or my

maid are playing with him in the house running around and him following. Then at times he just wants to catch hold of our calf muscles as if he wants to hunt. Well he is intelligent so he never hurts us and does it just enough for me to know that he sees me as a deer or something. I have seen Wild Dogs in Panna National Park (very close to where I live) and the way they behave amongst the pack and how they live is not very different from INDogs. And he will first run away from something he doesn't understand and if someone intimidates him with a stick or anything but he will always return after few seconds with confidence and confront the person with mild barks, growls and pouncing.

10. Dilnaz Hiramaneck-Upadhyay/Tyson, Bruce Lee, Princess: They all chase after cats,

rats, birds etc, but have never harmed or maimed any till today.

11. Dr.Srilakshmi Amirtheswaran/Robin, Maya, Tehya: Hard to say.

12. Brittany Powell and Greg Teitelbaum/Mira: I think Mira's prey drive is fairly moderate. She will chase birds or squirrels and has tried to engage with dead animals on a hike or in the street. She tries to hide or bury treats and toys and does a lot of digging when out in the dirt or grass. She has not shown any tendency toward marking.

13. Andy Roper/Vaga: Enjoys chasing and digging

14. Ruth Schneider/Incredible Hope: See squirrel, will chase!. Varmints beware.

15. Randi Lildballe/Otto: Very high. He will try to hunt anything.

16. Neha Arora/Champ & Jebo: Champ: Loves to eat insects, leaps at mosquitoes like a frog.

Likes to chase birds, but has never caught one. Not sure if he would actually attack them.

Page 93: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

93

Jebo: Does like to chase insects and hold down frogs, but has never attempted to attack or eat them.

17. Elizabeth Abraham/Angel, Blacky, Brandy, Keiko, Max, Mindy, Millie, Parsley: Moderate

to high predatory instinct as evident from the tendency to chase moving objects, like small animals, sometimes children, cyles, joggers, cars etc.

18. Hutokshi Ichhaporia/Simba: Can’t comment

19. Sharon Squires/Rupa, Bhura, Muskaan, Ravi: So far they have low prey drive. Bhura is

the only one I question. He must be a sighthound. He wants to chase much more than the others. But no, I'd say low prey drive over all. All in all, if trained they can learn to cool it. If socialised to large animals they are really excellent.

20. Vidya & Samik Biswas/Grumpy: Very strong. Anything small and that moves has to be

chased - and not necessarily killed. Lizards and frogs are weird-smelling creatures that probably emanate some dangerous liquids and gases - so we steer clear although we dislike them. Cockroaches and spideys are to be chased and mauled/killed. Cats definitely don't deserve to live :D

21. Caroline Walker/India: She tries to chase cats, squirrels, and small dogs. I suspect this is due to her prey drive. Fortunately she has never killed anything.

Page 94: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

94

22. Cherida Hivale/Blackie: High. Mud Pack: High. Whitey: Extremely high. Skinny Goldy: Extremely high.

23. Colleen Doyle and Greg Hitz/Cinnamon: Strong but does not appear to be interested in

chasing squirrels.

24. Monique Nerman/Tommy Goldeneyes: Definitely a hunting instinct but only with certain animals. Very good eye sight for small animals or birds.Tried drowning a sheep once, so always on leash when around sheep or goats.

25. Anand M N/Shiro: High.

26. Ashwini Kakkeri/Benzi, Browny and Boomer: Benzi: Only rats. Browny: everything was

for hunting. Boomer: He is friendly with dogs... but sometimes his body language is different.

27. Lisa Warden/Lady Penelope Chatterjee, Button Sengupta, Mr. Shakespeare Patel: Very

high for small wiggly things.

28. Rajvi Mariwala/Tequila, Gumps: Tequila: high prey drive. Gumps: low prey drive.

29. Manik J. Godbole/Tommy, Chinky: Chinky has more than Tommy.

30. Ambar Kumar Gupta/PP: Caught a sparrow by instinct once. Having caught it, didn't know what to do!

31. Charles Twigg & family/Jake: He is always searching...

32. Vishakha Gangadharan/Twitches: Exists. Sometimes the way she slowly approaches her teddies and then jumps on them and "kills" them, makes me feel like I'm watching a tiger kill a deer with stealth on National Geographic.

33. Saswati Mukerji/Fudge, Charm, Minx, Rumpus, Zorro, Pebbles, Shaka, Scamp, Rudy,

Chloe, Chutki and Husky: A couple of them have caught birds that have flown too low, it’s happened twice.

34. Sarabjeet Kaur/Angel: Never had an opportunity to observe.

35. Ramya Bala/Sandy: He gets his share of food at home everyday without fail and I

haven't really seen him charge at anything else for food/as prey.

36. Tina Carver D’Souza/Raju, Deepa: Raju chases pigs with the neighbour dogs…if he’s not napping. Deepa chases anything that moves!

Page 95: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

95

37. Rajashree Khalap/Kiba, Kimaya: Kimaya: Very high and uncontrollable once she eye-stalks. She is not pure INDog and seems mixed with some local sighthound breed judging by her appearance and behaviour. She chases birds, has killed many rats and mice and tried to catch bats. She is particularly excited when monkeys visit our garden and she’d definitely kill them if she could. She chases joggers sometimes. Kiba is INDog and chases crows and other birds but has not caught anything yet. He also chases moving objects on the beach e.g. the pony cart, motorbikes. Perhaps because I took him from his family at an early age, he is rather juvenile in this respect and his prey drive isn’t very serious or focussed; more like a game.

38. Aditya Panda/Robin: Extremely high. Will hunt and kill garden birds, squirrels, rats and

mice, cats if not restrained.

39. Aditya Panda & Rajashree Khalap/village INDogs: INDogs have been used as hunting dogs by many tribal societies including Santhals and Gonds. Used by many tribal communities for hunting large animals such as deer and wild pig, and even monitor lizards, hare, etc. INDogs and INDog-mixes are frequently observed chasing and killing wildlife around protected areas.

Q. Noisy/quiet

1. Minna Lintu & J. Desai/Roshni & Puru: Mostly quiet, except when something triggers

their barking. Feeding time is also rather noisy as they can't wait to get their food. Puru has been leashed a couple of times while we eat due to bad behaviour towards Roshni and he entertained us by singing the song of his hungry, hungry people. Also as previously stated they are exceedingly noisy when one of us has to go out.

2. Rochelle Lucas/Kala: Quiet. Kala is not able to bark and so does not make noise. She

can howl, growl and whimper, but only tends to do so when she is stressed.

3. Dominique Brand/LittleDog: Vocalization - sometimes I think LittleDog is really a Basenji. He sings and vocalizes as if he is actually talking to you. Although he occasionally barks, he is far more inclined to ‘yodel’ I have never, ever heard any other dog making such sounds, except LittleDog’s mother, and he will look you straight in the eye whilst doing so...I swear he is trying to talk!

4. Nolin Chitnis/Coffee & Bruze: Quiet. Not very noisy.

5. Lakshmi Ravishankar/Puffy: Quiet until somebody rings the doorbell.

6. Mandi Wagner/Winnie: Winnie is very quiet and rarely barks. When she hears a noise

that puts her on alert she will bark once or twice and then intently listen. When she is

Page 97: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

97

sure 'danger' has passed she will lie down or go back to whatever activity she was doing prior to the interruption.

7. Amy Manoharan/Rex: He barks a lot at every noise. And he joins in the nightly bark with

the neighborhood/rural dogs. He seems to also like to howl with the coyotes...I’ve only lived with one other dog that seemed to howl like that and that was a husky. When people come to the door he will bark constantly for a good half-hour which drives me and my customers up the wall...especially if they are afraid of dogs. 8. Shawna Weaver/Priya: Very quiet. Seldom barked. 9. Anil Tiwari ,Dr Neelam Tewari & Yash Tewari/Jackie, Jimmy, Fluffy, Rottie, Brownie, Chottu, Vodka, Martini, Johnny, Grant, Bacardi, Sweety, Chhoti, Hyna, Maria: Quiet and calm breed.

10. Aditi Shankar/Chloe, Rocket: Fairly quiet 11. Pavithra Chandramowlisharan/Shiva: The guy will not make a tiny bit of noise. Unless he is snoring at night. He is an introvert and likes to be by himself.

12. Amrendra Singh/Rocky: Rocky is quite a speaker. He barks a lot as he is very attentive of his surroundings.

13. Dilnaz Hiramaneck-Upadhyay/Tyson, Bruce Lee, Princess: Bruce and Princess bark only when needed, but Tyson will squeak his head and our ears off when we take them for a drive or when he sees his father (my husband), or some of our friends he's very attached to. 14. Dr.Srilakshmi Amirtheswaran/Robin, Maya, Tehya: Usually quiet. 15. Brittany Powell and Greg Teitelbaum/Mira: Mira is a very quiet dog most of the time. She will occasionally bark or grumble at a noise or sound, but it is rare. She will bark for attention if she is has been ignored or will "talk" through little grumbles and "yawns" from time to time if she needs attention. Her bark is very loud when she wants it to be, but she is not prone to barking unless prompted. 16. Andy Roper/Vaga: Very quiet. 17. Ruth Schneider/Incredible Hope: Hope is a quiet girl, but can be a talker. Often sitting in front of us and softly rolling her throat as if having a conversation. If the water dish is empty, she will let us know! She does not bark unless someone is approaching our home.

Page 98: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

98

18. Randi Lildballe/Otto: He is quiet most of the time but the vacum cleaner, visitors and cars get him to make a lot of noise. 20. Neha Arora/Champ & Jebo: Champ: He barks only when there is someone at the door. He is very quiet otherwise. Jebo: Barks when there is someone at the door, and while playing with Champ. She growls often during play. 21. Elizabeth Abraham/Angel, Blacky, Brandy, Keiko, Max, Mindy, Millie, Parsley: Noisy. 22. Hutokshi Ichhaporia/Simba: Quiet and laid-back. 23. Sharon Squires/Rupa, Bhura, Muskaan, Ravi: They are noisy! They bark a lot. They make many weird noises and communicate with lots of different sounds. 24. Vidya & Samik Biswas/Grumpy: Grumpy is quiet through most of the day, but when there's some strange movement around the house or if there's someone coming up the stairs or the elevator, she starts to bark and alert us. Her barks get really loud and fierce as a stranger approaches the front door. Her sense of sound, smell and hearing play an extremely vital role in her daily life. 25. Caroline Walker/India: Somewhat noisy...she howls at sirens, barks at noises in the hall and likes to sit in the window and bark at dogs that pass in the street. 26. Cherida Hivale/Blackie: Quiet. Mud Pack: Quiet most of the time except for when he sees another dog. Whitey: Mostly quiet, Shrill and noisy when he sees another dog. Skinny Goldy: Quiet.

27. Colleen Doyle and Greg Hitz/Cinnamon: She can be loud when nervous, sad or in pain. She "howls" if she is very upset.

28. Monique Nerman/Tommy Goldeneyes: Very quiet. 29. Anand M N/Shiro: Very noisy. 30. Ashwini Kakkeri/Benzi, Browny and Boomer: Benzi: Quiet. Asks for walks.Browny: Quiet. Asks for walks/food. Boomer: Quiet. Asks for walks, sleep, food...play... 28. Lisa Warden/Lady Penelope Chatterjee, Button Sengupta, Mr. Shakespeare Patel: They bark at the slightest provocation. 29. Rajvi Mariwala/Tequila: Tequila: average. Gumps: very quiet. 30. Rohitangshu Das/Bush: Bush is very quiet but responds to other dogs’

Page 99: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

99

barks. 31. Manik J. Godbole/Tommy, Chinky: Tommy quiet. Chinky has her small or loud growls every now and then. No unnecessary barks. 32. Ambar Kumar Gupta/PP: Generally quiet. Loves sitting in the verandah on warm evenings watching people go by, and scolding the stray dogs or children. 33. Charles Twigg & family/Jake: Quiet. 34. Madhu S.K./Foxy: She likes quiet environs. More comfortable with familiar noises at home, our voices, TV. And more importantly the immediate surroundings. 35. Vishakha Gangadharan/Twitches: She’s has perfected the "no bark" command. But other wise she is a VERY LOUD BARKER. If unchecked she would make me deaf. 36. Saswati Mukerji/Fudge, Charm, Minx, Rumpus, Zorro, Pebbles, Shaka, Scamp, Rudy, Chloe, Chutki and Husky: Very noisy when a stranger come. Very noisy when a stranger comes. 37. Sarabjeet Kaur/Angel: Very quiet. Barks only in response to some stranger coming home, or to the barks of the society dog. Does not bark in response to the dogs in the neighbour's house though. The society dog is her mentor and has helped her get back her confidence. She knows that Sweetie only barks at strangers and maybe that's why she only responds to her barks when at home. 38. Ramya Bala/Sandy: He does bark when suspicious but I wouldn't call him noisy but just being alert. And he is a talker, not barker but actually keeps a conversation going with you where you ask him something and pause and he answers and after he finishes, you can ask him the next question. 39. Tina Carver D’Souza/Raju, Deepa: If Raju barks…something is really wrong. Deepa barks at everything! 40. Lalitprabha Jadhav & Vidhyut Kargutkar/Perky, Kolaveri - Perky is quiet. Kolaveri is extremely noisy. Barks at the smallest instance and can bark continuously for long time.

41. Rajashree Khalap/Kiba, Kimaya: Kiba is extremely noisy and barks on every possible occasion - in response to the doorbell, the sight of a dog downstairs, while waiting for his food, and sometimes just for attention. His bark is very loud and can be heard even from the neighbouring park. His vocalizations include a multi-note loud yawn to express impatience. Kimaya barks less often but her bark is shrill and actually hurts the eardrums. She has a different pleasant yapping bark when playing. She is a howler

Page 100: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

100

and sometimes gets Kiba to howl too. She squeaks and whines when she wants something or when she’s discontented. 42. Aditya Panda/Robin: Can be very noisy. Over-alert to the slightest noises, particularly at night. Will bark at every possible suspicion. Will howl during the mating season. If restrained/locked-up or left behind alone at home, will protest very vocally. 43. Yvonne de Kock/Leela, Rishi - Very sensitive to human body signals, they will pick up human emotions and react eg will bark if someone has an angry disposition or if this is reflected in the person's gait (walking or running), even at a distance. So I would say it is good to first look, assess the situation, and then try and understand why they react by barking or growling and not just discipline them for so-called 'unwanted' behaviour. It is probably justified if one looks at the humans or other dogs in the situation. Remember barking is communication!

R. Energy levels and exercise requirement This can be age-related; diet-related; there will also be differences between INDog and INDog-mix here, depending on what the non-INDog half is

1. Minna Lintu & J. Desai/Roshni & Puru: Roshni has moderate energy levels and I'm sure that with more chances to exercise they would go up. Puru has an abundance of energy and if I can't give him something to do he will find things to do by himself. Usually not the kind of things that one would want a young dog to do. Moderate exercise seems to suffice but I'm sure they would not mind more.

2. Rochelle Lucas/Kala: Requires moderate to high levels of exercise. She is grumpy if she does not go for a daily walk/ run. Kala loves digging and is also a big chewer. We always have a range of toys for her to chew when she is bored. She is not interested in “fetch” and so needs someone who will actively exercise her.

3. Dominique Brand/LittleDog: He is HIGH energy. Combined with being bright, this means we need to do lots of exercise, and mix up play time too. He'll get bored of just playing fetch after 3-4 throws, and will want another challenge. He needs several hours of running around and physical challenges each day.

Page 102: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

102

4. Nolin Chitnis/Coffee & Bruze: Medium.

5. Lakshmi Ravishankar/Puffy: Huffs and puffs after a couple of fetches. Weight is an issue, though her diet is not the reason for it. Doesn't get as much exercise as she should.

6. Mandi Wagner/Winnie: Winnie has a very high energy level and breaks out into a full run at least 3 times a day. On average, she begs to play for about 3 hours a day. On park days, we will spend about 2 hours with other dogs and she is active the entire time.

7. Amy Manoharan/Rex: Fairly high...But he’s like the world’s fastest couch potato. He has two speeds...full tilt run and asleep. There seems to be no in between. He was a terrible apartment dog (it was only temporary). He spends most of his days running out in the field and patrolling the perimeter fence of our property. 8. Shawna Weaver/Priya: She was ill. N/A. 9. Anil Tiwari ,Dr Neelam Tewari & Yash Tewari/Jackie, Jimmy, Fluffy, Rottie, Brownie, Chottu, Vodka, Martini, Johnny, Grant, Bacardi, Sweety, Chhoti, Hyna, Maria: Energy is high in them. We have a huge space of 200,000 sq ft and a swimming pool of 100 x 30 ft so they get ample exercise. Swimming is one thing I make them learn. And they all enjoy swimming a lot. There is

Page 103: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

103

a small agility field where they jump and play by themselves. Vodka is a pariah who is tall and runs like a tiger. Very active and playful. Brownie is like a hound and can jump our boundary of 12 feet height. 10. Aditi Shankar/Chloe, Rocket: Chloe - Medium Energy level, walked twice a day. Rocket - High energy level, can run/walk up to 6-10km without getting tired. 11. Pavithra Chandramowlisharan/Shiva: Extremely energetic outside the house and very lazy inside the house. Exercise requirement - 2 days every week at the beach where he will run and frolic to his heart's content. Half an hour to one hour walking everyday for ‘bathroom’ purposes. 12. Amrendra Singh/Rocky: Rocky needs lots of exercising and running around. He loves running and jumping to such an extent that I now think I should have named him Usain Bolt rather than Rocky. Very energetic and it’s like he has an unending source of energy and wants to play all the time. He gets bored if he has had his full sleep and is in attentive mood. He wants to do something or the other. So I take him to the park and make him run a lot and exercise and once he gets tired he comes home, eats a bit and again goes back on the roof to check out what is happening around.

13. Dilnaz Hiramaneck-Upadhyay/Tyson, Bruce Lee, Princess: Princess & Bruce are, I would say, hyper-active children with high energy levels. Luckily for them, we have a nice open house with a small terrace, so they get to run around quite a bit. Other than that, after we finish our night walk, I leave them free in our building compound, so they can tire themselves out. Tyson on the other hand is a lazy lazy bum and would like nothing more than to sleep. 14. Dr.Srilakshmi Amirtheswaran/Robin, Maya, Tehya: Rather energetic. Minimal exercise requirements. Usually play briskly with one another for most of the day. 15. Brittany Powell and Greg Teitelbaum/Mira: Mira is a medium to moderate energy dog. She loves to run around in an open field or park and is very very fast, but she is also happy to snuggle and lounge around the house. She will play with toys independently or bring them for throwing and fetch. She is learning to run with her owner and has been very receptive to running for exercise and staying "on task" while running as a companion. She was the runt of her litter and we have been discouraged by the vet when it comes to a strict diet or limitations on treats. She will graze on her food throughout the day and receives two meals and a handful of treats throughout the day. She is lean and muscular with minimal intensive exercise. Her bursts of high energy usually occur around 7:30 or 8 am and in the evening around 8 pm. 16. Andy Roper/Vaga: Sleeps 16 hours a day minimum but if required she'll trot for miles behind my bike. 17. Ruth Schneider/Incredible Hope: Hope does have a routine. Early mornings start with breakfast, then a romp outside. She often takes a nap until play time, at which point it is best to stay out of her way. She and our other dog, Jack will run and wrestle and wear themselves out

Page 104: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

104

for a good hour. Then the day becomes a spa-like setting, basking in the sun and relaxing until dinner. Then the routing starts again. A good long walk serves as a good replacement for the evening wrestling matches! 18. Randi Lildballe/Otto: High energy level and needs to be walked at least twice a day. As he gets older he needs less exercise but he never gets tired no matter how long the walk is. Mental stimulation is also very important. 19. Payal Ray/Rocket: Very high energy levels...mainly as a puppy when he would really tire us out. 20. Neha Arora/Champ & Jebo: Both have extremely high energy levels and need long walks twice a day/play time with each other. 21. Elizabeth Abraham/Angel, Blacky, Brandy, Keiko, Max, Mindy, Millie, Parsley: Moderate energy levels. 22. Hutokshi Ichhaporia/Simba: Quite happy to lie around all day. Just needs to go outside for his job. 23. Sharon Squires/Rupa, Bhura, Muskaan, Ravi: For what they are I'd say low. They are hyper as puppies but then settle in. They need room to run every day. But if they can blow off steam for an hour each day they are quiet. 24. Vidya & Samik Biswas/Grumpy: Yay! We're the official Red Bull Dog (yeah the canine that didn't feature in the Red Bull energy drink commercial), in case you didn't know. We can forget all about food and water if we have a playmate that can run with us jumping over bushes and potted plants throughout the day. We're super high on energy and love daily exercise. If you bring us toys, please make sure we get to chomp through them. Otherwise, you can use them to entertain yourself, thank you very much! We have to be taken out to the park at least for 30 mins everyday. We're OK with a day's gap, but we will make sure you know just how uncomfortable we are, holed up inside this mansion of yours :( 25. Caroline Walker/India: Very energetic, requires a lot of exercise. She is a very good running partner. 26. Cherida Hivale/Blackie: Extremely high. Mud Pack: High. Whitey: Extremely high. Skinny Goldy: High. 27. Mira Shihadeh/Bindi: Needs exercise in order to be calm around the house, otherwise she gets nervous, and even starts itching with skin problems etc. 28. Colleen Doyle and Greg Hitz/Cinnamon: Lots. We run her and she has a dog door to go outside to play. She is always walking around and exploring.

Page 105: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

105

29. Monique Nerman/Tommy Goldeneyes: Very high energy. Needs a lot of walking but mostly stimulation. 3 hrs walk/day. Very quiet in the house. 30. Anand M N/Shiro: High energy. One needs to channel this. 31. Ashwini Kakkeri/Benzi, Browny and Boomer: They played around the house everyday. Now that Benzi and Browny are no more, Boomer makes sure we play with him everyday. 32. Lisa Warden/Lady Penelope Chatterjee, Button Sengupta, Mr. Shakespeare Patel: Now that they are 4 years old, they need a lot less exercise than they used to. They lie around most of the time. However, we may be moving to the UK this year and if we do I will be taking them on long treks in the countryside. 33. Rajvi Mariwala/Tequila, Gumps: Tequila: hyperactive and requires much exercise. Runs 4-5km a day apart from other exercise. Gumps: Average energy levels and average exercise requirement. 34. Rohitangshu Das/Bush: Bush loves to sit idly on the stairs watching people passing by, but during playtime shows full energy levels and never gives up.

16. Manik J. Godbole/Tommy, Chinky: High levels of energy. In Tommy's pup and youth days, 4 walks of half an hour, plus 1 hour play on the terrace.

17. Ambar Kumar Gupta/PP: Taken for a walk twice a day - enjoys the evening walk. Often playful and brings a ball or some piece of our clothing, [eg a sock!] to tempt us into chasing her and playing catch. 18. Charles Twigg & family/Jake: Seems calm. The mornings seem to be his "let's play" time! 19. Madhu S.K./Foxy: High energy levels. She has her 10 min playtime at home. 2 walks, once each morning & night - 20 mins each walk.

20. Vishakha Gangadharan/Twitches: EXTREMELY HIGH. This dog has boundless energy. Needs lots of play and at least one long walk a day.

21. Saswati Mukerji/Fudge, Charm, Minx, Rumpus, Zorro, Pebbles, Shaka, Scamp, Rudy, Chloe, Chutki and Husky: Very high energy levels, especially since most of them are young, between 1 and 4 years of age. Only the oldest is 8 years old.

22. Sarabjeet Kaur/Angel: Are high, however she does not get the opportunity to burn it up with me. The only guilt that I live with post her rescue.

Page 106: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

106

23. Ramya Bala/Sandy: He is an active dog and has lots of energy but we have a large open space/yard and he is able to burn off there and also accompanies my grandma on her daily walks, so that keeps him exercised.

24. Tina Carver D’Souza/Raju, Deepa: Raju likes to go out late night and roam with the neighbour boys. He sleeps in the day and just looks cool and regal! Deepa is very high energy. I don’t know when she sleeps.

25. Lalitprabha Jadhav & Vidhyut Kargutkar/Perky, Kolaveri: Very energetic, need good amount of walks and exercise especially when young like Kolaveri. Older dogs like Perky need moderate walks.

26. Rajashree Khalap/Kiba, Kimaya: High energy levels specially when young. Kiba and Kimaya walk on leash (usually with running) outside for at least 75 minutes a day, and play a lot indoors as well. At our beach house they are even more active and play for several hours during the day. They get very hot with exercise and don’t play non-stop but with short breaks to rest and cool down. If they don’t get enough exercise they tend to be destructive. Kiba was born a village INDog and is happiest outdoors. I play ‘fetch’, ‘tug’ and ‘find’ games with him to use up his abundant energy. Kimaya was hyperactive, but now she’s 5 her activity levels have reduced a little. She loves running for its own sake and is ecstatic when able to run free at our beach home. 27. Aditya Panda/Robin: Packed with energy. Requires heavy exercise and ample playing space. Relishes very long walks, outdoor life. Very, very high stamina, well into old age.

107

S. Food Aggression About food aggression with other dogs and food aggression with humans. In single-dog households the former trait obviously can’t be seen.

1. Minna Lintu & J. Desai/Roshni & Puru: No food aggression towards humans, although Puru will try to clamp his mouth shut regardless of the amount of human fingers in there if he has something we don't want him to have in his mouth. Puru also has food aggression towards Roshni and if given free reign he would simply eat her food as well as she doesn't defend it.

2. Rochelle Lucas/Kala: None.

3. Nolin Chitnis/Coffee & Bruze: Sometimes depending on training. Both my Indies have

excellent table manners. (Does not mean they use a fork and spoon or say their prayers before meals or say please and thank you!)

4. Lakshmi Ravishankar/Puffy: None, whatsoever.

Page 108: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

108

5. Mandi Wagner/Winnie: Winnie only exhibits food aggression in the form of a low warning

growl when she is chewing a rawhide or marrow bone. Once, she growled at another dog when she came near her while she was eating.

6. Amy Manoharan/Rex: None whatsoever. THANK GOODNESS!! I can and have taken

food right out of his mouth and he just looks at me like "really?!"

7. Shawna Weaver/Priya: Did not display

8. Anil Tiwari ,Dr Neelam Tewari & Yash Tewari/Jackie, Jimmy, Fluffy, Rottie, Brownie, Chottu, Vodka, Martini, Johnny, Grant, Bacardi, Sweety, Chhoti, Hyna, Maria: Each has a separate bowl and stands for the food.

9. Aditi Shankar/Chloe, Rocket: Nil

10. Amrendra Singh/Rocky: He is very protective of his food even with his dog friends. He is

a bit finicky when eating (reason: pampering) but never wants to share his food with anyone other than a female INDog from the street who he has known from childhood. But even with her it depends on his mood whether or not he lets her eat his food. She climbs over different houses using stairs to come and meet him on the roof. He will not over- eat most of the time. When I’m giving food to the dogs on the street he will jump all over me and want to have the food himself even if he has just eaten.

11. Dilnaz Hiramaneck-Upadhyay/Tyson, Bruce Lee, Princess: Tyson has slight food

aggression, but it’s manageable as long as I'm around. The others arent so fussy.

12. Dr.Srilakshmi Amirtheswaran/Robin, Maya, Tehya: Quite aggressive when the other tries to steal food. Baring of teeth, warning growls and then a fight.

13. Brittany Powell and Greg Teitelbaum/Mira: Very little food aggression. She will "guard"

her food from our cat. But will not attack or growl if another dog or animal is near her food. She grazes on her food throughout the day and is generally not protective of her food bowl.

14. Andy Roper/Vaga: None

15. Ruth Schneider/Incredible Hope: Absolutely no food aggression what so ever. When

Hope first arrived, she did have to adjust to the fact that no one would be taking her food away. Within days she was comfortable and secure. Hope's normal position is lying down to eat, just as Jack does and they often share their "leftovers". One of the things we have always done, since we have so many dogs over at once, is to make sharing a game. I will hold a bowl of soft treats and have them sit in a semi circle as one treat is givien at a time. As they wait their turn, they feel secure that they will get one in time.

Page 109: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

16. Randi Lildballe/Otto: No not at all. You can take out food from his mouth.

17. Payal Ray/Rocket: NONE. You can pick up his bowl anytime...even if he is eating. He is

possesive about his chewies :)

18. Neha Arora/Champ & Jebo: Both are very civil about food, love to even eat from each other's bowls.

19. Elizabeth Abraham/Angel, Blacky, Brandy, Keiko, Max, Mindy, Millie, Parsley: Depends

on environment management and early experiences. If positive experiences are provided during puppyhood, zero food aggression is seen.

20. Hutokshi Ichhaporia/Simba: None at all towards us but growls and bares his fangs at

Tuffy if he tries to get near his food.

21. Sharon Squires/Rupa, Bhura, Muskaan, Ravi: Extreme food aggression in all four dogs. Must be dealt with right away, no excuses. I don't allow it.

22. Vidya & Samik Biswas/Grumpy: Grumpy did show aggressive traits when it came to food

- especially her favourite foods right from when we brought her in as a puppy. Probably the tough life she led on the roads, vying with other dogs/puppies for food. But she does let mommy mix her meal in the middle of her lunch/dinner.

23. Caroline Walker/India: She is not food agressive as far as I can tell.

24. Cherida Hivale/Blackie: low. Mud Pack: low. Whitey: low. Skinny Goldy: low.

25. Colleen Doyle and Greg Hitz/Cinnamon: None. We leave the food out for her and she

only eats what she needs.

26. Monique Nerman/Tommy Goldeneyes: None. Will growl if another dog tries to take his chewies.

27. Ashwini Kakkeri/Benzi, Browny and Boomer: Benzi: never growled but knew how to eat

other’s food using trickery. Browny: always growled but always gave up her share. Boomer: Doesnt mind us...but never shared with Benzi and Browny.

28. Lisa Warden/Lady Penelope Chatterjee, Button Sengupta, Mr. Shakespeare Patel: No

problem unless they are given a meat bone or rawhide bone. Then the 2 boys tend to growl and get quite protective if you want to take the bone away.

29. Rajvi Mariwala/Tequila, Gumps: Tequila: none. Can put hand in the bowl when she's

eating and can take away bones/treats without any problem. Gumps: none.

Page 110: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

110

30. Manik J. Godbole/Tommy, Chinky: no aggression after they settled in as pets.

31. Ambar Kumar Gupta/PP: None at all. I have removed food being chewed by her from

her mouth without any aggression from her. It’s a different tale where other dogs and food on the road is concerned! She will not tolerate any other dog near us if there is any food nearby!

32. Charles Twigg & family/Jake: Haven't seen any.

33. Madhu S.K./Foxy: Would say 5%, depends on how hungry she is and who is at home

and their interactions with her. Since she was a stray rescue, she has that aggression built-in as she had to find food outside.

34. Vishakha Gangadharan/Twitches: Exists. Not with kibble or everyday treats but if I

snatch some exotic item she has claimed as her’s she will not take well to it. Unless I say "off " and she backs off then I can take it.

35. Saswati Mukerji/Fudge, Charm, Minx, Rumpus, Zorro, Pebbles, Shaka, Scamp, Rudy,

Chloe, Chutki and Husky: Get very excited when I put their bowls in front of them. Have fought over the odd scrap they find on the floor.

36. Sarabjeet Kaur/Angel: Almost nil. Allows Pudding, my cat, to eat her rotis or slurp her

porridge, first. Waits till he moves away before starting her meal. Is okay with any of my other cats taking a bite first as well. However the moment there is another cat that joins the first one, she starts off with a low growl as a warning.

37. Ramya Bala/Sandy: I don't know if this one is particularly a softie but I have never seem

him aggressive, not towards food, not even towards strangers (he is very alert, but is not aggressive). He looks very enthusiastically towards food when we fill his plate, wagging his tail very vigorously, but has never been aggressive.

38. Tina Carver D’Souza/Raju, Deepa: Deepa rules the bowls. She is always hungry! If she

decides to take Raju’s food, he will walk away. Sometimes he will tease her with his biscuits and just leave them sitting in front of him waiting for her to try to take them!

39. Lalitprabha Jadhav & Vidhyut Kargutkar/Perky, Kolaveri: Perky - none. Kolaveri - high.

Doesn’t want any other pet close by when eating.

Page 111: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

111

40. Rajashree Khalap/Kiba, Kimaya: Probably depends on the age at which adopted. Kimaya was adopted at 5 months when she had already been foraging on the street with her family for some time. She is not at all food aggressive with humans but is with other dogs and has to be separated from Kiba at meal times. She did try to guard her chewbone from me initially but got over that. Kiba was adopted before he started eating solids. He has no food aggression with humans or dogs.

41. Aditya Panda/Robin: Naturally very food aggressive, heightened by inherent suspicion

and nervousness. But, if raised properly, can be very tame while feeding.

Page 112: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

112

T. Cleanliness About self-grooming, clean habits and natural odour 1. Rochelle Lucas/Kala: High. Kala is very clean. She cleans herself like a cat and was

toilet trained when we adopted her from the street as an adult dog.

2. Mandi Wagner/Winnie: Winnie is extremely clean. Her coat seems to repel dirt. When she gets muddy, once it dries, it will flake off and she will look like she never got dirty. Her smell is virtually odorless, and she always smells quite nice. After bathing, she doesn't have a wet-dog smell.

3. Amy Manoharan/Rex: Other than liking to run in the field after it rains and jump right up

on the couch... *grumbles*… lol – he’s not a messy dog... it’s just that darn Texas clay mud! But the good thing about him is that he knows to go jump into the tub and stand still so we can wash his feet when he comes in from the field. He doesn't like it much but tolerates it and hops into the tub without needing to be told to get in.

4. Shawna Weaver/Priya: Average.

5. Anil Tiwari ,Dr Neelam Tewari & Yash Tewari/Jackie, Jimmy, Fluffy, Rottie, Brownie,

Chottu, Vodka, Martini, Johnny, Grant, Bacardi, Sweety, Chhoti, Hyna, Maria: They are all house trained.

6. Aditi Shankar/Chloe, Rocket: Chloe – Clumsy. Rocket - Extreme cleanliness.

7. Pavithra Chandramowlisharan/Shiva: The cleanest dog you will ever find. He has

impeccable hygiene standards, never seen him dirtying in the house. His skin coat is also good and he does not shed too much either. He strangely does not give a bad dog smell even if you do not bathe him for a long time. This may be due to the fact that we do not feed him wet meat food and only dry food. The only dirtying he does is when he pushes around his food.

8. Amrendra Singh/Rocky: From time to time to time he soils his legs and would dirty the

whole house and I have to clean his feet. But I have seen him licking himself all over including his feet when he is sitting on my bed. If he is in a playful and mischievous mood he will roll around and dirty but once ready to sleep on the bed he will even beat even a cat in cleaning himself.

9. Dilnaz Hiramaneck-Upadhyay/Tyson, Bruce Lee, Princess: OMG, they keep themselves

clean and how!!! I’ve noticed that street dogs Cindy, Joey and Don also manage to keep themselves pretty clean though they aren’t lucky enough to live in a home.

Page 113: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

113

10. Dr.Srilakshmi Amirtheswaran/Robin, Maya, Tehya: Very clean. They clean their paws

often. Are not very messy.

11. Brittany Powell and Greg Teitelbaum/Mira: Mira is fairly clean. She sheds very little and grooms herself regularly through licking. She also does not make messes with water or food.

12. Andy Roper/Vaga: As clean as any dog.

13. Ruth Schneider/Incredible Hope: Hope has a soft furry coat that is shiny and clean. She

grooms herself often and loves getting brushed every day. She will allow her ears to be cleaned but is not crazy about her nails being clipped. Her cleanliness is relatively effortless.

14. Randi Lildballe/Otto: Very clean almost like a cat.

15. Payal Ray/Rocket: Mr Rocket HATESSSSS to have a bath. He has to be dragged inside

the toilet and will growl the entire time.

16. Neha Arora/Champ & Jebo: They hate baths - absolutely hate baths. Champ has gotten used to getting his paws washed after a walk, but Jebo still raises hell.

17. Elizabeth Abraham/Angel, Blacky, Brandy, Keiko, Max, Mindy, Millie, Parsley: Ha ha

ha....will roll in dead animal carcasses and animal dung and frolic in water puddles if given the opportunity.

18. Hutokshi Ichhaporia/Simba: ok

19. Sharon Squires/Rupa, Bhura, Muskaan, Ravi: They are all four so clean and so easy to

housebreak. Just a joy...a joy to live with. Clean bodies and clean habits. They smell good also with almost no body odor. But as hot weather set in I saw that my otherwise super clean dogs would roll in mud. The mud is very smelly. So I guess sometimes they do gross things!

20. Vidya & Samik Biswas/Grumpy: Grumpy HATES baths. Hates water too. Wouldn't be

seen within a 10 mile radius of a water body if she could. We've tried our hand at pushing her inside a pool and even a small muddy lake and she even swam - but she hates water. She obviously hates her potty and pee and wouldn't want to be seen close to anything that smells of either of these things!

21. Caroline Walker/India: Very clean...cleans herself often. Doesn’t have much of an odor.

Dosn't have the urge to roll in or eat poop as some dogs do.

Page 114: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

114

22. Cherida Hivale/Blackie: Extremely clean. Mud Pack: Extremely clean. Whitey: Very clean. Skinny Goldy: Extremely clean.

23. Mira Shihadeh/Bindi: Very very clean

24. Colleen Doyle and Greg Hitz/Cinnamon: Very clean. Always cleaning herself. 25. Monique Nerman/Tommy Goldeneyes: Very clean. Spends time cleaning himself and is

spotless. Loves being brushed and pampered, hates the vet.

26. Anand M N/Shiro: Very clean. Easy to maintain.

27. Ashwini Kakkeri/Benzi, Browny and Boomer: Benzi: Was a clean one :)Browny: cleanest. Boomer: hates bath...

28. Lisa Warden/Lady Penelope Chatterjee, Button Sengupta, Mr. Shakespeare Patel:

Extremely clean.

29. Rajvi Mariwala/Tequila, Gumps: Tequila: so clean that we joke that she has an identity disorder and thinks she's a cat! Will lick herself clean often. Gumps: loved getting and staying dirty.

30. Manik J. Godbole/Tommy, Chinky: They never pee or poop in the house.

31. Ambar Kumar Gupta/PP: Bathed every week. Brushed daily. Lice and fleas are rare.

32. Charles Twigg & family/Jake: No shedding; likes to dig and gets dirty in the yard but

seems clean enough.

33. Madhu S.K./Foxy: Pretty clean. While eating, she stops each time a grain of food drops outside of her bowl, cleans it and goes back to eating again! Same with water; does not spill it out.

34. Vishakha Gangadharan/Twitches: She would roll in the mud if I let her. But she is kept

extremely clean. Paw wash after walks and butt wipes after potty and I bathe her regularly. She lets me do all of that willingly. SHE LOVES tooth-brushing. Nothing gives her more joy than me brushing her teeth.

35. Saswati Mukerji/Fudge, Charm, Minx, Rumpus, Zorro, Pebbles, Shaka, Scamp, Rudy,

Chloe, Chutki and Husky: I keep them all very clean. Some of them are very particular themselves, some love to roll in the earth.

36. Sarabjeet Kaur/Angel: Very clean. Am not aware of what I am expected to elaborate

here.

Page 115: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

115

37. Ramya Bala/Sandy: He is fairly clean, only poops on his walks outside the house.

38. Tina Carver D’Souza/Raju, Deepa: Both dogs are very particular about their grooming.

39. Lalitprabha Jadhav & Vidhyut Kargutkar/Perky, Kolaveri - Low - depend on us for baths. Neither of the dogs seem to like bathing but tolerate it at most.

40. Rajashree Khalap/Kiba, Kimaya: Very little natural odour even if they aren’t bathed for

several weeks. Kimaya the INDog-mix has a heavier coat and sheds a lot twice a year but Kiba has a very short coat and his shedding isn’t very noticeable. They do not drool. They clean their paws and stomachs regularly by licking. Kimaya likes to roll on dead rodents/fish but Kiba doesn’t. Both were easily house-trained. When urinating Kimaya often raises a paw to avoid getting it wet in the puddle. They rarely get fleas or ticks.

41. Aditya Panda/Robin: Extremely high (relatively, among dogs). Shedding is very controlled and strictly twice a year, unlike European breeds which shed round the year in Indian climate. Odour is almost undetectable unlike European breeds. Requires very little grooming, self -grooms to some extent. 42. Yvonne de Kock/Leela, Rishi - Never smell, their beds never smell. Like to be bathed in warm water, not cold! Like to feel clean. Like clean beds without wet and muddy paws marks. 43. Mina Lintu/Roshni, Puru - Very clean, both groom themselves on a more or less regular basis and have their preferred places to go potty. Natural odour is very mild, even when wet. Roshni also understands that after walks her paws need to be rinsed and doesn't fuss about having them dunked in a jug one by one.

44. Rajashree Khalap/village INDogs – they probably don’t get groomed or bathed often, but generally look very clean unlike urban street dogs. Owned dogs look particularly clean.

U. Sense of smell

1. Dominique Brand/LittleDog: He has an incredible sense of smell. He can detect the tiniest

morsel of food buried under the ground. But whilst his desire to scavenge for whatever rotten, decaying food he can find is somewhat disgusting, we try to turn this skill of his into a positive. He loves to play scent oriented games and to work to find a treat based reward.

2. Mandi Wagner/Winnie: Winnie seems to have an average sense of smell in dog terms. I

haven't noticed any sort of difference or speciality on this.

3. Amy Manoharan/Rex: If he has one…he’s never once used it. He is PURELY a sighthound type of dog. We have tried to get him to use his nose but he just doesn't at all. Even to find treats hidden around the house...he just won’t. He uses his eyes every time.

4. Shawna Weaver/Priya: Above average sense of smell and ability to find treats.

5. Anil Tiwari ,Dr Neelam Tewari & Yash Tewari/Jackie, Jimmy, Fluffy, Rottie, Brownie,

Chottu, Vodka, Martini, Johnny, Grant, Bacardi, Sweety, Chhoti, Hyna, Maria: Dogs have this basic feature which is their survival tool. HIGH.

Page 117: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

117

6. Aditi Shankar/Chloe, Rocket: Both – high

7. Pavithra Chandramowlisharan/Shiva: He is really good at smelling out his treats, milk sweets, mice, people, what not!

8. Amrendra Singh/Rocky: Very acute sense of smell. I have seen him looking for small

insects making the faintest of sounds. If I even touched a dog somewhere and I came home he would know it and would start licking me and go crazy running all over the house out of excitement.

9. Dilnaz Hiramaneck-Upadhyay/Tyson, Bruce Lee, Princess: Very very strong, especially

Princess & Bruce.

10. Dr.Srilakshmi Amirtheswaran/Robin, Maya, Tehya: Terrific.

11. Brittany Powell and Greg Teitelbaum/Mira: I think Mira's sense of smell is light to moderate. She does sniff for things, but seems to respond more to sight and sound.

12. Andy Roper/Vaga: As any dog.

13. Ruth Schneider/Incredible Hope: Excellent. I am amazed at her senses.

14. Randi Lildballe/Otto: Not that good. Is more visual oriented.

15. Neha Arora/Champ & Jebo: Both have very keen sense of smell. Champ can usually be

found lurking outside the kitchen.

16. Elizabeth Abraham/Angel, Blacky, Brandy, Keiko, Max, Mindy, Millie, Parsley: Excellent...can detect anything remotely edible and then sit next to it hoping to get some, even if the neighbors are cooking.

17. Hutokshi Ichhaporia/Simba: Good.

18. Sharon Squires/Rupa, Bhura, Muskaan, Ravi: I find they are normal in this regard with

polite habits. They don't smell everyone or everything. They don't appear to trail when outside.

19. Vidya & Samik Biswas/Grumpy: Grumpy has a very keen sense of smell. She is the official sniffer dog of our house - has successfully led us a couple of times to hidden intruders - rats, cockroaches etc. in corners of the house we couldn't have thought about.

20. Caroline Walker/India: Very good sense of smell when it comes the scavenging...she can

smell through garbage bags...also knows when there is a discarded bone in the street etc.

Page 118: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

118

Poor sense of smell when it comes to hunting...we have walked right past a cat that was behind a fence and she didn’t even notice.

21. Cherida Hivale/Blackie, Mud Pack, Whitey, Skinny Goldy: High in all of them.

22. Mira Shihadeh/Bindi: Amazing sense of smell.

23. Colleen Doyle and Greg Hitz/Cinnamon: Great sense of smell. She is able to play hide

and seek based off of smell or based of her vision. Her senses all seem to be very strong.

24. Monique Nerman/Tommy Goldeneyes: Not so good. Very good eyesight though.

25. Anand M N/Shiro: Could be high, not sure.

26. Ashwini Kakkeri/Benzi, Browny and Boomer: All have/had great sense of smell...They knew who were strangers and who were relatives... even when they met them for the FIRST TIME!!!!

Page 119: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

119

27. Lisa Warden/Lady Penelope Chatterjee, Button Sengupta, Mr. Shakespeare Patel: Very good. They open cupboard doors if they know there are rawhide bones in there (or Andrew's leather shoes, in Shakers' case!) Shakers pulled the toaster oven clear off the counter once to get the carrot cake that was inside.

28. Rajvi Mariwala/Tequila, Gumps: Tequila: great sense of smell. Does a lot of nose-work games and tracks the cat when asked to/tracks rodents etc. Gumps: average sense of smell.

29. Rohitangshu Das/Bush: Bush has a great sense of smell.

30. Manik J. Godbole/Tommy, Chinky: very high.

31. Ambar Kumar Gupta/PP: Knows exactly where that biscuit or that ball is hidden. Good

sense of smell.

32. Charles Twigg & family/Jake: He is always smelling and searching for something.

33. Madhu S.K./Foxy: Very good. She sniffs me out from the utility area when I get back home (I consciously come in like a thief).

34. Vishakha Gangadharan/Twitches: Amazing. She can be a tracking dog under the right

guidance. She used her nose more than her eyes as a puppy and I often make her find her treats using her nose. When I go out to meet Kartik and I come back she will sniff (for like 10 minutes) the side he sat next to me in the rickshaw.

35. Saswati Mukerji/Fudge, Charm, Minx, Rumpus, Zorro, Pebbles, Shaka, Scamp, Rudy,

Chloe, Chutki and Husky: Extremely sharp, all of them.

36. Sarabjeet Kaur/Angel: Strong. Although I haven't tested her for her sniffing instincts yet.

37. Ramya Bala/Sandy: He isn't a sniffing hound but I suppose he has normal sense of smell.

38. Tina Carver D’Souza/Raju, Deepa: Deepa wins this one. She digs up bones that she has hidden months back.

39. Lalitprabha Jadhav & Vidhyut Kargutkar/Perky, Kolaveri - Very good sense of smell. Both

dogs reject food if it’s spoiling/going sour a little even if we are unable to detect it.

40. Rajashree Khalap/Kiba, Kimaya: Average. Lalee tracked me by scent outside our house once but I haven’t seen any marked scenting ability in any of my dogs otherwise. When searching for hidden treats they seem to get the scent only when quite close. Their vision seems very good as they seem to recognize dog friends/enemies from a considerable distance away. Kiba seems to have particularly keen hearing. But they

Page 120: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

120

don’t react to their dog ‘enemies’ if their view of them is obscured by cars or other objects, even if these dogs are fairly close. They have to see them to react.

41. Aditya Panda/Robin: Average 42. Minna Lintu/Roshni, Puru - Seems to be quite keen with Puru and I have high hopes of

trying out tracking with him once we are in Finland. Roshni is more sight-oriented and doesn't really use her nose on the ground, she's more interested in air-borne smells and what she can see.

43. Rajashree Khalap/village INDogs – they were used as sighthounds (not scent) by

many tribal communities and are still used that way by poachers

Page 121: INDog and INDog-mix Owner’s Manual 1- Temperament

121

Some comments… We see a number of INDog traits in INDog-mixes as much as in pure INDogs, particularly those traits connected with survival in a free-roaming niche. Caution around new people and new objects, a strong independent streak, high intelligence and an ability to ‘train’ the owner, nervousness, high energy levels are displayed by many of the dogs whose owners contributed here. New owners should be prepared to see some or all of this temperament in their pets. To ensure a happy and peaceful life with your Indy, we would strongly recommend:

• Early socialization to other dogs, other animals, new people – This is critical. Indies are social animals but if isolated from other dogs in their first four months, can become fearful or aggressive towards them. This is usually a problem for urban apartment-block living where your pet will have to encounter other dogs, cats and unknown people on every outing. Dogs also enjoy interacting with their own species, so why deny them that pleasure? However please expose your puppy to other dogs in a controlled, supervised environment and in accordance with her/his vaccination schedule.

• Early exposure to as many new experiences as possible • Adequate outdoor exercise for at least one hour a day. An under-exercised Indy,

like any other under-exercised dog, may become destructive or irritable or display other problem behaviour.

• Mental activity to keep that sharp brain occupied! There are lots of fun activities you can engage in with your dog, such as ‘finding’ toys and treats, or basic obedience using reward-based training methods. Rotate his toys, hiding some away for a few weeks so he doesn’t get bored with them.

• If adopting from a shelter or foster home, insist on knowing the pup’s history. There may have been some trauma or abuse in her/his past that will affect his temperament. For instance if he was abused by children in the past he may retain a dislike of them which would not make him a suitable pet for families with young children. Any kind of abuse can make a pup unnaturally fearful or aggressive.

• Don’t overlook behaviour that might become problematic, e.g. biting too hard while playing, attacking visitors, food aggression. Contact a positive trainer or behaviour consultant as early as possible as most problems can be corrected if detected early.

• Get your dog used to being alone in the house for a few hours every day, to avoid separation anxiety.
