Background of the Study

The code switching phenomenon Indonesian-English does not only

occur in a conversation, but also in a song. There are many Indonesian

songs that use English words in the lyrics. The code switching

phenomenon in conversation is of course different from code switching

in the song lyric. In the song lyric, code switching is a deliberate style

used by the composers who have prepared and reflected on their lyrics

before they release their songs. The structural types of the English code

switching within Indonesian pop songs have different features and

functions behind it. The use of Indonesian-English code switching in

Indonesian pop song lyrics will be analyzed in order to get a view that

English may function as part of Indonesian pop songs.

Problems of the Study

1. What are the types of English code switching

found in Indonesian pop songs?

2. What are the functions of English code

switching applied in Indonesian pop songs?

Objectives of the Study

1. To find out the types of English code switching

in Indonesian pop songs.

2. To find out the functions of English code

switching in Indonesian pop songs.

Theoretical Review

Code switching is a bilingual or multilingual

communication strategy consisting of the

alternate use of two (or more languages) in

the same utterance or during the same

conversation.

● Types of Code Switching Based on Poplack (1980)

1. Inter-sentential Code Switching

2. Intra-sentential Code Switching

3. Extra-sentential Code Switching

● Functions of Code Switching Based on Appel and Muysken (1987)

1. Referential function 4. Phatic function

2. Directive function 5. Metalinguistic function

3. Expressive function 6. Poetic function

Research Method

● Descriptive qualitative method

● Source of the Data

The data of this study are 30 Indonesian pop songs which were obtained from website on the internet in the form of written lyrics.

● Data Collection Procedure

1) Finding the lyrics of Indonesian pop songs in the internet.

2) Selecting lyrics that consist of Indonesian-English code switching.

● Data Analysis Procedure

1. Downloading and importing the thirty Indonesian pop songs which will be analyzed into a MP3 player.

2. Italicizing all English words, phrases, clauses, and sentences.

3. Checking the target items in the two dictionaries (Oxford dictionary (2000) and KBBI Luring (2015).

4. Identifying the code switching types, then classifying into three types of code switching based on Poplack (1980).

5. Analyzing the functions of code switching based on the theory of Appel and Muysken (1987).

6. Drawing conclusion from the results of data analysis.
