“Trainees Facilities” Trainees office

Next to Secretaries / Consultant Offices on corner of corridor

Extremely handy for the bathroom

Two desks, computers, internet access

Also can use the hot desk computers within the department

Free tea/coffee/ milk in theatre

(nespresso coffee maker – please supply your own pods)

Small reference library

Convenient but expensive vending machine by the department

WARNING Do not go to food areas in scrubs (i.e. canteen/ M and

S / Costas)

They may refuse to serve you

OR

If caught by management will ‘tell you off ’

Other issues You will need you ID bade from your host trust at all

times

Car parking – if you park in Hathersage Car Park and show a NHS badge – it is £5 for the day. However there are streets close to the hospital that it is free to park on. (One of the consultants park the far side of Whitworth Park with few issues).

Drug Charts Please do not write drugs up on the chart.

We are fully aware that you are more than capable of doing this in your routine practice!

It is just a safety measure brought in to try and protect the pilot project from unwanted criticism

You can give drugs however please check your dosages (and check again!)

Drug Dosage – a reminder

Recent multiple critical incidents involving:

10 x overdose of Paracetamol (ml for mg)

10 x overdose of Fentanyl

Both occurred in small babies

Please check dosage of drugs with a colleague (consultant/trainee/ODP) FOR ALL DRUGS

Beware dilutions!

The AnaestheticMachine

Drager Primus – some defaults Set up different to adults -

Phillips Monitoring

“Brick” compatible throughA&E, HDU, ICU, TheatresPush for ETCO2 monitoring in Recovery.

Other equipment The other equipment used

are the:

Carefusion fluid pump

Alaris infusion pump –often with a pressure gauge

These are easy to use but get someone to show you how to program them prior to use

Anything else that you have not used before just ask!

Pre operative visiting As you are aware by now this is an essential part of the

anaesthetic journey

Please either accompany the consultant or offer to carry out your own assessment (CBD in the making!). Just be aware that there are some extra questions that we sometimes ask – like about pregnancy and NICU stay – if not sure ask your consultant for advice

Emergencies!

CEPOD/ ARREST BLEEPS This occurs in theatre 24

By definition unable predict what is going to happen!

If want exposure to this please let Dr Morley know

CEPOD trainee holds the emergency bleeps for arrest/trauma.

If want exposure to this please let Dr Morley know and we will try and work something out

Please note trauma calls often at the beginning or end of the day – so you may have to stay late for maximal exposure

Feedback Currently taster weeks are a pilot

and we need your feedback to:

Improve

Continue

At the end of week it is mandatory to fill in the questionnaire and leave in an envelope in Morley pigeon hole/ Christine’s desk.

In return a certificate for the taster week will issued

The questionnaires will not be opened until a batch (5+) come through to maintain confidentially.

Please include in your feedback anything not covered that would have been useful
