Indulgences are part of the Good News of Jesus Christ, and are generally neglected in preaching and teaching

today. All of the devotions referenced on this website have a least a Partial Indulgence attached; where so noted,

a Plenary Indulgence can be gained daily by the faithful.

Indulgences

"An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been

forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through

the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury

of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints." Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1471

What are the "Usual Conditions" for receiving the Plenary Indulgence, i.e., the complete remission before God

of temporal punishment?

1. have the intention of gaining the indulgence,2. receive the Sacrament of Penance (within several days before or after the prescribed action of the

indulgence),

3. receive the Eucharist (within several days before or after the prescribed action of the indulgence),4. Pray an Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be, within several days of the prescribed action, for the intentions

of the Pope,

5. be free from all attachment to sin,6. perform the action how and where prescribed (eg., in church, in a family setting, before the Blessed

Sacrament, etc.).

Various Plenary Indulgences Every day, the faithful may receive a Plenary Indulgence, under the usual conditions, forreading Sacred

Scripture as spiritual reading, from an approved text and with reverence due to the divine word, for at least

a half an hour. The same applies if, due to infirmity, a person listens to another person or a recording.

Every day, the faithful may receive a Plenary Indulgence, under the usual conditions, forEucharisticAdoration for at least a half an hour.

Plenary Indulgence is granted to the faithful on the anniversary of their Baptism and renew their baptismavows with an approved Formula .

A Plenary Indulgence is granted to the faithful who spend at least three entire days in the spiritual exercisesof a retreat.

On January 1, the faithful who recite the "Veni Creator" on the first day of the year to implore the divineassistance for the year, receive a Plenary Indulgence under the usual conditions.

On the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart (June 11), the faithful who recite the Act of Reparation "Iesudulcissime" receive a Plenary Indulgence, under the usual conditions.

On August 2, the faithful who pray an Our Father and Creed receive a Plenary Indulgence - the PortiuncolaIndulgence -, under the usual conditions.

On November 2, All Souls Day, the faithful who visit a church and pray an Our Father and Creed for thepoor souls receive a Plenary Indulgence, under the usual conditions.

Between November 1 -8, the faithful who visit a cemetery and pray (if only mentally) for the departed. ThisPlenary Indulgence applies to the dead.

On the Solemnity ofChrist the King, the faithful who recite the prayer of personal Dedication, "Jesusdulcissime, Redemptor" receive a Plenary Indulgence under the usual conditions.

On December 31, the faithful who recite the "Te Deum" on the final day of the year, to offer thanks to Godfor gifts received, receive a Plenary Indulgence under the usual conditions.
