Dear Friends,

The idea of “maker culture” is thought of in many different ways. Author Richard Sennett wrote, “Craftsmanship names an enduring, basic human impulse, the desire to do a job well for its own sake.” And Peter Korn said, “We have a certain innate biological character, and I think that working creatively with actual materials — bringing new and meaningful things into the world with your own skills — helps us inhabit our humanity to the fullest.” Bill Watterson, creator of Calvin and Hobbes, would agree. He exclaimed: “We have a human need for craftsmanship!”

At The Crucible we embrace all these ideas. We welcome makers who just want to dabble or delve, as well as those looking to master their craft. To express themselves artistically. To have fun with family and friends. To scratch a curious itch about how to weld, or melt glass, or work leather.

Our Volume 4 catalog offers something for everyone, from short courses designed to give you a glimpse of our programs (p. 6) to longer intensives and “immersion” courses — including a series of weeklong adult intensives next January (p. 7). While summer camps have wrapped up, we still have many options for young craftspeople this fall (page 30.)

And though every year it seems to take me by surprise, the holidays will soon be here. What better time to create a unique handmade gift for someone on your list? How about forging your own bronze bell to toll the New Year (p. 14)? Try creating a glass ornament or Halloween pumpkin (p. 15). Gifts of jewelry are always welcome, especially something crafted by hand (p. 20-21).

Our fall schedule includes classes only offered during this time of the year, including painting and drawing (p. 23), mechanical sculpture (p. 22), and timberframing (p. 29).

Don’t forget to mark Saturday, Sepember 10. Our Fall harvest-themed Tools to Table open house features materials used in cooking, serving, and eating the fruits of the harvest. And our most popular open house, the Holiday GIFTY, will be December 10-11, highlighting irresistible arts and crafts for everyone on your list. Both events are free and open to the entire family!

So whether you’re joining us this Fall to perfect your craft, make a gift, explore an idea, or simply have a good time, we look forward to having you join our community!

Sincerely,

David C. MillerExecutive Director

P.S. Want to see The Crucible for yourself? Come by for a free guided tour. We’ll show you around our 20 studios and 56,000 square feet of creative space. Tours are offered every two weeks, on the first Tuesday of the month at 6 pm and on the third Saturday at 3 pm.

Weekend IntensivesWeekend intensives are a full weekend, Saturday and Sunday of immersing yourself in a new skill.

Master ClassesMaster classes are more advanced classes taught by experts in the field.

Lab SessionsLab sessions are a great benefit, exclusively for Crucible members! Practice the skills you learn in class and explore new possibilities with your craft. No instruction is provided during lab sessions, but a lab monitor will be present to answer questions, manage safety, and provide overall support. You are free to come and go at your convenience during open lab hours, however you must provide your own materials.

Founded in 1999, The Crucible is a nonprofit arts education organization that fosters a collaboration of arts, industry and community. We aim to inspire creative exploration and expression through hands-on arts education and experiences. A hub of innovation built around the industrial arts, The Crucible serves as a catalyst for personal growth and community transformation.

At The Crucible, forges roar, sparks fly, glass bends, neon glows and creativity explodes! Over 85 celebrated faculty and industrial arts experts teach nearly 175 courses and workshops to around 5,000 students a year at our impressive 56,000 square foot West Oakland facility, making The Crucible the largest institution of its kind on the West Coast. Our programs include adult classes as well as our award winning youth programs, in which ages 8-17 gain memorable learning experiences and make new friends.

Using metal, wood, stone, glass, clay, leather and many other materials, Crucible courses have something for everyone: from novices to experienced artists and tradespeople. We offer a noncompetitive, open atmosphere for people with diverse interests and backgrounds. Our instructors have extensive experience and a passion for what they teach, and make learning industrial arts fun and unintimidating. Our students agree: 75% of those who take a Crucible class return for another, and another.

The Crucible features a low faculty-to-student ratio (often 1:6 or better), which fosters a hands-on teaching approach. Our pricing structure includes both tuition and studio fees, as well as all the materials, tool access, and safety training that students need. There are no hidden costs, however some classes may require additional materials as noted.

TEAM BUILDING WORKSHOPS Many leading Bay Area businesses participate in our Team Building Workshops, encouraging their employees to learn and collaborate in new ways. These take place in a single day and range from 2 to 8 hours in length (see page 4).

ACCESSThe Crucible provides two special options for continuing access to our studio and tools.

Studio Rentals The Crucible offers 24-hour access to private or shared spaces with industrial pallet racks, 120-volts in a secure building, and access to The Crucible’s studios and tools during studio hours, with appropriate studio area checkouts.

CREATE ProgramOur CREATE program (CRucible Expanded Access to Tools & Equipment) gives members a chance to work in the studio area of their choice during regular studio hours, with access to professional-level equipment that would otherwise be unavailable to most home-based makers (see page 5).

THE STUDIOToursTake a free tour to see what we’re all about! Tours take place the first Tuesday of the month at 6 pm, and the 3rd Saturday at 3 pm, except during holidays and special events. Call to schedule or for more information.

Open HousesWe love having people visit our place. We roll the caboose out in front and light the arch to welcome visitors to our open houses, where studios are open, sparks are flying, and there are plenty of hands-on opportunities to learn about The Crucible. Admission is free and our family-friendly open houses are fun for everyone.

EVENTSWhile industrial arts and crafts education is at the core of our mission, we like to weave in a healthy dose of fun and entertainment while we’re at it! Each year, The Crucible hosts, produces or participates in many high-profile events that help distinguish our unique role in the Bay Area community. Many are free and open to visitors of all ages.

All youth MUST HAVE a completed parental consent form and a completed medical authorization form on file before the first day of class. These forms MUST BE SUBMITTED for each and every quarter at The Crucible. Youth cannot participate without these forms on file. NO EXCEPTIONS. Youth attending all day classes should bring a sack lunch. Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. No weapon making in youth classes.

The Crucible offers a unique and fun learning experience for youth between ages 8 and 17. Youth classes explore blacksmithing, welding, woodworking, glass blowing, ceramics, and other arts. Students can apply what they’ve learned here—creative problem solving, scientific principles, and teamwork— at school and beyond.

Hands-on CreativityAt The Crucible, we learn by doing. Classes can involve exploring geometry and welding a customized bike frame, blowing glass vessels after learning about heat application, or soldering components to build a battery powered “beetle-bot.” We have a range of courses available in our Youth Weekend Programs and After School Programs.

Putting the “A” in STEAMBlending creativity and art into STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) helps kids really enjoy designing and building projects from their own imagination. The Crucible’s non-competitive environment lets students choose their own direction, not just copy what the teachers demonstrate. Kids make something in every class that they take home at the end of the course.

Something for EveryoneYouth classes are geared specifically for ages 8-11, ages 12-17, or ages 14-17. In addition to regularly scheduled classes, The Crucible offers weeklong camps in the Summer and on Spring Break, project-based school and organization workshops, and the popular bicycle Fix-A-Thon and Earn-A-Bike programs. Need based scholarships are available.
