Industrial EngineeringA part of Engineering
1
Definition
“Industrial engineering is the engineering approach applied to all factors, including the human factor, involved in the production and distribution of products or services.”
2
Development
Industrial engineering developed initially over a 30 year period spanning 1882 to 1912. The mile stones in this period are:
The idea that engineers have to design and fabricate products at costs. This idea gave birth to the subject of Engineering Economics subsequently in 1886 to American Society of Mechanical Engineers “The Engineer as an Economist”.
Engineers got interested in wage incentive methods between 1880 and 1895.
3
Nature of the Work
Using math and science industrial engineers develop economical solutions to technical problems.
4
5
They use the latest scientific advancements to create commercial applications to meet consumer needs.
They simulate system operations, generate specifications for parts, produce and analyze designs, monitor quality and control efficiency.
Industrial engineers make a product or provide a service by determining the most effect ways to use the five basic factors of production: Machines, materials, energy, information and people.
Employment and Job for Industrial Engineers
Overall, engineers held about 1.6 million jobs last year and 214,000 of them were industrial engineers.
6
Earnings and Salary
In foreign context the median annual salary of industrial engineers is $75,110. The highest 10 percent earn $109,220, the lowest 10 percent earn $48,840 and the middle 50 percent earn between $60,350 and $92,080. Industrial engineers earn some of the highest starting salaries, $58,358 on average among college graduates with bachelor’s degrees.

In context of Nepal
In the professional level, the value or the work sector of the industrial engineer is still unknown, but its performance as the senior and capable engineers of Industrial sector, hydro-power sector, mechanical sector, The Institute of Engineering (IOE) has given us an equivalent certificate of mechanical engineer for recognition of our work sector.
Though we are equivalent with mechanical its self sector is always with us.
8
Academia & Industry
There is huge gap between its work sector and its academia.
Although Industry is the important factor of the Nation development, the manpower (industrial Engineers) has not been visualized as important part yet.
Industry can take our study as the beneficial factor, this process makes dual benefit to the both.
9
Equivalency
The equivalency certificate for the Industrial Engineers to the Mechanical Engineers.
10
Job Placements In Nepal
Students of Industrial engineers go to Industry frequently for OJT.
Pass out Industrial engineers are involved in the industries like Hulas, Surya Nepal, CG, Uniliver, etc and getting well response from it.
Although Industrial Engineers involved in the industry many of them are believe in entrepreneurship (creating own jobs).
