Preface

The Lab-Volt Mechanical Training System, Model 46101, is a modular program that covers the installation, use, maintenance, and troubleshooting of mechanical drive systems.

The curriculum is divided into five levels, and covers the following topics:

About This Manual

The topics covered in this manual are presented in the form of work orders. Eachwork order includes a brief description of the task, a drawing of the equipment setupwhen necessary, and the main steps of the work to be done.

The objective of this manual is to familiarize with laser alignment.

Safety considerations

Safety symbols that may be used in this manual and on the equipment are listed in the Safety Symbols table at the beginning of the manual.

Safety procedures related to the tasks that you will be asked to perform are indicated in each exercise.

Make sure that you are wearing appropriate protective equipment when performing the tasks. You should never perform a task if you have any reason to think that a manipulation could be dangerous for you or your teammates.

Prerequisite

As a prerequisite to this manual, you should be familiar with the different types of alignment methods. You should have read the manual Alignment and Couplings,p/n 36965-2.

You should also have read Appendix E in this manual before starting with Work Order 1.

Systems of units

Most of the components in the Mechanical Training System are machined using the imperial system of units. For this reason the imperial system of units was preferred in the manual.

In the figures, however, distances are also indicated using the SI system of units. These values are shown in parentheses.

The distances are estimates and may vary due to the play in the components.

Refer to the Conversion Table in Appendix D if necessary.

To the Instructor

Before a student begins a work order, ensure that the equipment is in good condition and does not represent any risk when used.

Your evaluation must relate to the quality of the accomplished work.

Make sure that the students understand the objectives of the task they are to do. They should have read the Appendix E in this manual before starting with Work Order 1.

To familiarize yourself with the Laser Alignment System, and learn how to set up the equipment.

1. Perform the Safety Procedures listed in Appendix C.

2. Set up the system shown in Figure 1.

a The spacers from the Laser Alignment panels are used to maintain the spacing between the extrusions and to add rigidity.

If you are using the stand-alone Laser Alignment system, Model 46621-A, install the four leveling mounts under the extrusions to install your training system on a table.

3. Perform the following steps to complete the setup shown in Figure 2.

a In this manual, the section at the right of the coupling (containing the positioning guide) is called the moveable section and the section at the left of the coupling is called the stationary section.

Install the stationary and moveable bases as shown in Figure 2. Do not tighten the screws now.

Install the pillow block bearings.

Slide a shaft (from the Laser Alignment panels) in each pair of pillow block bearings.

Align the end of the shafts with the end of the pillow block bearings as shown in Figure 2.

Install the grid coupling (leave a gap of 1/8 in. (3.2 mm) between the hubs of the coupling).

Install a positioning guide on each side of the moveable base.

Install and tighten the metal strips on the stationary and moveable bases just enough to prevent the shafts from rotating freely.

a The metal strips are used as a brake to simulate the friction produced by a motor and its load. If the strips are too tight, the shafts could bend. It will also be impossible to rotate the shafts as required by the alignment procedure. The correct tension will allow the shafts to be hand-rotated with a minimum of effort.

4. Install the measuring units as described in Appendix E and shown in Figure 3. Install the measuring unit (S) at the left of the coupling and the measuring unit (M) at the right of the coupling.

5. Connect the measuring units to the display unit, and switch on the display unit.

6. Configure the display unit by entering the machine dimensions.

7. Aim the laser lines. If the laser lines are outside the detection areas of the measuring units, perform a rough alignment.

8. Ask the instructor to check your work.

9. Do not disassemble the setup now if you plan to continue with the next work order. Otherwise, disassemble the setup and return the equipment to the storage location.
