Presentation Overview• Challenges Working with the Industrial Sector• Key Features of Programs that Demonstrate

Success with the Industrial Sector• Discussion of Example Programs That

Demonstrate Such Success• Example Industrial Case Study Projects

4

Challenges Working with the Industrial SectorThe industrial sector presents a unique challenge to the energy efficiency and renewable energy program. While industrial facilities also have the same end uses as commercial buildings (lighting, HVAC, basic plug loads, etc. ) energy use is often dominated by industrial process. Motivating these customers requires programmatic approaches and expertise that are respectful of an industrial plant’s unique patterns of use and the focus on its fundamental manufacturing needs.

Industrial Program Attributes for Success inEnergy Efficiency and Renewable Energy

• Field and Outreach Staff That Work Directly with Industrial Facility Staff and the Markets that Serve Them

• Program Staff and Consultants with Manufacturing and Industrial Expertise and Understanding of Need for Process Integrity

• Insights into the Industrial Facility Decision-Making Process

• Ability to Identify Measures and Quantify Measures for Process and Cross Cutting Technology (Compressed Air, Process Heating & Cooling, Steam, Etc.) Projects

• Well-Designed Prescriptive Tracks That Incentivize Industrial Measures

• Custom Measure Tracks That Readily Incorporate Complex Industrial Measures

Case Study 2: Sugarloaf Mountain Efficient Snow Making Project

(Efficiency Maine Funded Project)• Sugarloaf Mountain is Known for Its History of Environmental

Stewardship and Energy Efficiency Practices– Energy Efficiency– Waste Management– Waste Water Treatment– Use of Bio-Fuels

• Sugarloaf Mountain has Developed a Long-Term Relationship with Efficiency Maine Field and Technical Staff

• Efficient Snow Making Projects Motivated by Ongoing Discussions and Promotion by Efficiency Maine Technical Staff

Page 13: Industrialsectorpresentation

13

Facility Characteristics• Energy Use Dominated by Snow Making

– Compressed Air (1000s of HP)– Water Pumping (1000s of HP)

• Short Snow Making Operating Season• Had Been Dominated by Low Efficiency,

Traditional Compressed Air-Water Snow Guns• New Technologies Are Now Prevalent

– Single-Ring Fan Systems– Multi-Ring Fan Systems– HKD Systems

Page 14: Industrialsectorpresentation

14

Multi-Ring Fan Systems/HKD Systems Adopted at Sugarloaf Mountain

• High Efficiency Fan Systems– On-Board Compressor for Snow Nucleation– Primary Energy for Ducted Fan System– High Velocity Fan Propels and Distributes

Snow to Desired Locations– Water and Electrical Connections– Performs Well in Marginal Weather

Condition Performance• HKD Snow Guns

– Higher Efficiency Variant of Traditional Air-Water Snow Gun

– Typically Used as Base Locations– Tower Design Reduces Compressed Air

15

Sugarloaf and Efficiency Maine• Long-Term Relationship

Between Steinway and Efficiency Maine– Consultants Have Comprehensive

Understanding of the Sugarloaf Environmental and Cost Saving Objectives

– Efficiency Maine Technical Staff Have Significant Expertise in Snow Making Efficiency Operations

• Long-Term Participation with a Wide Array of Efficiency Maine Program Offerings
