The Evolution of 4K and Content Distribution Networks (CDNs)
Intelsat,PSSI,Ericsson,NewtecandiStreamPlanetwilldemonstratetheevolutionoftrue4KUHDTVusingHEVCcompressionandCDNcontentdistributionwithend-to-endvideo transmissions via satellite and the Internet to the Las VegasConventionCenterduringthe2015NABShow.
ThediagramaboveshowstheIntelsatOnePrismmulti-media transmission chains for the simultaneous distribution ofa4KvideofeedandaCDNStream,withcontentplayoutoriginating from a PSSI production vehicle.
TheEvolutionofTrue4K,UHDTVDistributionIntelsatOne Prism provides a new paradigm in media net-working, allowing customers to easily upgrade a legacy satellite-basednetworktoanext-generationautomatedhybrid converged IP network. 4K UHDTV content provided byDiscoveryCommunicationswillbetransmittedfromPSSI’sproduction vehicle located in Las Vegas. Using a Playout Server,areferenceUHDHEVCEncoder,andtheNewtecMDM6000SatelliteModem,thevideofeedwillbeuplinkedinKu-bandtoIntelsat’sGalaxy17satelliteat25MbpsinaDVB-S2Xmodulatedstream.Attheconventioncenter,a
NewtecMDM6000SatelliteDemodulatorandareferenceHEVCDecoderwilldelivera4:2:2,10-bit4KUHDTVsignalat60framespersecondstreamwillbedownlinkedandfedtothe UHDTV monitor in the Intelsat stand. This portion of the demonstration will showcase how IntelsatOne Prism, based ontheNewtecDialogmultiserviceplatform,combinedwithHEVCtechnologyandPSSI’sversatilefleetofSNGvehiclescan be combined to deliver the highest quality media content efficientlyandwithsimpleautomatedprocessesfromalmostany geographical location.
MaximumFlexibility–SimultaneousContentDistribution Network (CDN)Withinthesamevehicle,PSSIwilluplinkanadditional 5Mbit/sCDNmezzaninevideostreamtoGalaxy17usingNewtec’sefficientMx-DMA™ return channel technology andEricsson’sAVP3000encoder,whichwillbedownlinkedatIntelsat’sAtlantateleport,andconnectedtotheNewtecDialog4IFhub(HUB6504),whichservesasthecoreoftheIntelsatOnePrismservices.Themulti-servicePrismplatformcan simultaneously coordinate several services and applica-
tionssharingthesamespacesegment,whileoptimizingQuality of Service and offering simple, automated opera-tionsforcustomers.TheCDNstreamwillberoutedviatheinternetatIntelsat’steleportanddeliveredtoiStreamPlan-et’sAventus®serviceforlivemediaencoding,multi-screenpackagingandpublishingtoCDNfordeliveryviatheInter-nettoiPadsforliveviewingintheIntelsatstandatNAB.
UnparalleledControlLeveraging the Prism transmission management mecha-nismsandwebuserinterface,the4KandCDNstreamtransmissions can be controlled remotely and automatically viaalaptopintheIntelsatboothatNAB.Overall,thedem-onstration shows how the Prism platform enables custom-ers to manage multiple types of video content delivery and otherIPapplicationswithinasingleplatformthatoptimizesbandwidthandautomatesandsimplifiesoperationswithonly a small incremental investment in hardware and man-aged service from Intelsat.
