I am delighted to welcome you to our first performance season for 2013!

as a QUT dance graduate, I am very conscious of the importance of the performance opportunities that Essentially Dance provides to our students. as a key component in our BFa (dance Performance) course, these seasons present valuable real world experiences where students gain exposure to national and International choreographers, work with creative design and production teams, and look to further develop the art of stagecraft as part of their journey towards a professional dance career.

2013 marks the 35th anniversary of QUT dance. not only are we proud of the discipline’s history of contributions to the dance industry both here in australia and overseas, we take great pleasure in recognising the achievements of our graduates in their careers. To assist in emphasising this year of celebration, we invited five of our Alumni to contribute their creative passions to choreographing and working with our students. a key responsibility when considering our programming is to ensure we scaffold a variety of dance genres and artistic approaches across the three years of study to assist in developing versatility. a big thank you to Lisa Wilson, Vanessa Mafe-Keane, sammie Williams, Kym stokes and Les Livesey for providing such diverse and rich learning experiences for our students!

Being situated as part of the QUT Creative Industries Faculty presents wonderful opportunities to connect across various disciplines and departments, and I would like to recognise the significant contribution from Drama – Technical Production, QUT Precincts, QUT/CIF Marketing, and the school of MeCa in helping to produce, stage and promote Essentially Dance. a heartfelt thank you also goes to our dance Team and dance health Team members, who have invested considerable time, energy and care into supporting the students in their performance preparation and learning journey.

Lastly, thank you very much for your patronage, support and encouragement of our students as audience members. They have worked incredibly hard and we are proud of the effort they have made to rise to the challenges presented to them. We hope you enjoy the show!

ROSA HIRAKATACostume Designer and Wardrobe Supervisor

rosa’s long career in Costume Making & designing has seen her working on over 100 drama and dance shows and festivals around Brisbane. From humble beginnings working at QUT Technical Production’s old shed on Merivale street (demolished long ago), her involvement with QUT has been long and most gratifying. Working with and mentoring Technical Production students, many of whom are now very successful professionals, are her fondest memories.

rosa had a two year “retirement” from theatre when she “hung up” her scissors, thinking that this chapter was closed and it was time to pursue another adventure! somehow the yellow brick road brought her back to theatre, where she realised her heart is. Essentially Dance 2013 is only the beginning!

KIM STOKES & LES LIVESEY (MAJESTIC)Choreographer

Kym stokes and Les Livesey, know in the industry as Majestic, were recently seen on Australia’s Got Talent in 2011 as finalists. For 22 years, Kym and Les have been performing their brand of aerial/adagio acts in australia and overseas.

Working with the second-year students, they wanted to share their extensive knowledge in aerial and adagio and create a unique piece that would be both challenging for the students and enjoyable for

the audience to watch. Kim and Les trained them extensively in core stabilisation, giving the students a new platform at which to develop the piece and taking them to a new dimension in aerial dance. straps are a common apparatus, however Kim and Les have utilised them in this piece as an original concept.

VANESSA MAFE-KEANEChoreographer

Vanessa Mafé-Keane graduated from stuttgart Ballet school and danced with The Queensland Ballet for seven years. Fulfilling her ambitions to live and work overseas, she spent 10 years in Geneva as a soloist with Le Ballet du Grand Theatre and freelance artist with Vertical danse - Compagnie noemi Lapzeson as well as co-founding her own performance group Co M-s-K.

In Brisbane, Vanessa has created works for expressions dance Company, Brisbane Festival and QUT dance where she regularly lectures. Vanessa has obtained her MFa (QUT) and is currently undertaking a practice-led Phd focussed on the choreographic process in relation to embodiment, interdisciplinary and collaborative practice. she remains engaged in the local dance community as an independent choreographer, teacher and board member of ausdance Qld.

10 BRUISED MOMENTS

Choreography: Vanessa Mafé-Keane in collaboration with Csaba Buday & 3rd Year QUT students 2013 (avril huddy & 3rd Year QUT students 2009)Concept & Direction: Vanessa Mafé-KeaneRehearsal Director: Csaba BudayLighting Designer: Glenn hughes (based on Jason Organ’s original design)Costume Designer: shaaron Boughen & Vanessa Mafé-KeaneMusic/Composer: david PyleDancers: 3rd Year BFa dance Performance

10 Bruised Moments is an exploratory work that plays with ideas of rupture and structure. It was originally choreographed for QUT dance in 2009. This work comprises ten fragments, where each fragment investigates a choreographic concept that ends abruptly, without resolution, leaving behind a feeling of rupture. The repetition of distinct musical cues is used to signal the beginning and end of each section and provides a sense of structure to the eclectic musical score composed by david Pyle. Lighting plays an integral role and sweeps across the stage, allowing strange abstract forms to escape into the light. This helps create a layer of visual complexity together with shaaron Boughen’s costume designs, which suggest the discolouration of bruises. On stage, groups of dancers assemble; their unruly movements trigger waves from inside the pack, moving both in and out of unison. however, the pack quickly disperses and another concept begins to emerge.

We have many aspirations for ourselves but often they get lost in the pursuit of a single one. Thank you to the 1st Year dancers for their hard work and the QUT staff and crew for their support.

Traces looks at the idea of ‘emotional residue’; the belief that people’s emotions leave traces in the physical environment, which can later influence others or be sensed by others. In creating the work we explored the interplay between forgotten spaces and the remnants of what we leave behind and played with a series of kinetic studies around the ideas of presence and absence. Looking at residual or fragmented movement in relation to memory, movement that refers to something other, to something that is now absent, we explored what you discard and what you keep. Traces starts where memory and imagination collide and become something altogether new. Created in collaboration with the performers.

fascia“[1] A fascia is a structure of connective tissue that surrounds groups of muscles, binding some structures together, while permitting others to slide smoothly over each other.”dorland’s Medical dictionary

This aerial dance piece explores the connective tissue fascia; fascia is what binds our muscles allowing them to function in isolation and collectively. The dancers are flexible structures able to resist great uni-directional tension forces until the pulling force has straightened out the bands of fibers. The straps provide a sliding and gliding environment for the dancers to articulate aerial movement as well as suspending and transmitting movement from dancer to dancer, providing a supportive and movable wrapping apparatus for dancers as they pass through and between each other.
