I n January 2013, OSSGA members gathered for the association’s annual Operations, Health & Safety Seminar, where attendees had an opportunity to raise a toast to individual excellence during the Safety Awards Luncheon. Hosted by Craig Copping, chair of the Niagara Regional Committee, and Mike Scott, OSSGA Health & Safety Committee staff liaison, the event honoured members who have made a significant contribution to the overall health and safety of their peers and industry in 2012 through their roles within various member companies. This year’s individual awards included a record-breaking 20 winners. OSSGA would like to congratulate the following individuals on their contribu- tions to workplace safety. Angelo Bevilacqua Superintendent, Walker Aregates Inc. Angelo’s dedication to safety procedures and practices has shone a positive light on Walker and the aggregate industry as a whole. His initiatives have helped Walker Brothers’ Quarry in Thorold, ON achieve over 500,000 person-hours (10+ years) without a lost time injury (LTI), and the Ridgemount Quarry in Fort Erie, ON clocked 110,000 person-hours (10+ years) without an LTI thanks to Angelo’s influence. Kevin Biggs Plant Manager, Lafarge Canada Inc. A key player in the development of Lafarge’s universal Emergency Response Plan template, Kevin is a champion for safety at the West Paris plant. Thanks to numerous safety changes and Kevin’s central role in organizing Emergency Response Plan drills with the local fire department, he has helped eliminate risk across the plant with no medical incidents reported for over five years. Dane Clark Health and Safety Coordinator, James Dick Construction Limited

Dane’s steadfast approach to workplace health and safety has generated benefits for employees at every James Dick Construction worksite. As the health and safety coordinator, Dane served a critical role in designing and implementing the Company Driver Safety Program, and also had an active hand in introducing other positive changes across the company.

Jason DingmanLead Hand, Dufferin Aggregates -- a division of Holcim (Canada) Inc.

A respected leader at Dufferin’s Flamboro Quarry, Jason consistently seeks innovative and effective ways to promote safety on the job site. From developing new safety plans, improving existing programs, or training young employees, Jason’s work has led the Flamboro Quarry to achieve the equivalent of 9.7 years worked without an LTI.

Vince ForbesPlant Manager, Lafarge Canada Inc.

Vince is a steadfast leader at Lafarge’s Fonthill plant, where he helped develop a universal Emergency Response Plan template that has since been incorporated into all Lafarge aggregate sites in southwest Ontario. In addition to carrying out a gap analysis for the plant, Vince has also introduced numerous safety initiatives and regularly educates the public on topics concerning jobsite safety at community events.

Chris CoulsonPlant Manager, Lafarge Canada Inc.

As plant manager for Lafarge’s plant in Cambridge, ON, Chris promotes safety in all areas of his work. A key member of Lafarge’s Emergency Response Plan development team, Chris recently helped design a safer way to install rubber media in a discharge chute without the need to remove the chute and crawl inside. Chris also performed a gap analysis for all pieces of equipment, further safeguarding his employees.

Matt DonohueForeman, Dufferin Aggregates -- a division of Holcim (Canada) Inc.

As a management member of the Joint Health & Safety Committee, Matt is active in training new staff and transferring operators on issues related to jobsite safety. In his seven years with Dufferin, Matt has worked to help eliminate complacency risks and find new and innovative ways to improve everything from housekeeping to maintenance methods and work procedures.

Aaron HamillSafety Coordinator, The Seegmiller Group (Preston Sand & Gravel Company Limited)

With an eye for safety and an affinity to risk analysis and prevention, Aaron has helped The Seegmiller Group improve near-miss reporting by 90 per cent, and has produced company-wide hazard alerts for each occurrence. In addition, Aaron has been instrumental in developing and imple-menting company-wide hazard analysis and job task guidelines.

Wayne HarriesPlant Manager, Lafarge Canada Inc.

Wayne plays a critical role in ensuring plant safety, having helped create Lafarge’s universal Emergency Response Plan. Wayne has also carried out a number of other important initiatives, including a plant gap analysis, followed by a number of safety changes, such as extending catwalks for some of this equipment to allow for safe and easy access without requiring a man lift.

Brian JanssensForeman, Dufferin Aggregates - a division of Holcim (Canada) Inc.

Since joining Dufferin in 2001, Brian has been a passionate advocate for workplace safety. He has implemented numerous safety processes and tools, and goes above and beyond the call of duty when training both new and experienced employees in safe work practices. Brian’s leadership at Cayuga Quarry has helped record the equivalent of 9.1 years in person-hours worked without an LTI.

Bruce KleinPlant Manager, CBM Aggregates

As plant manager for Cambridge Pit, as well as a Joint Health and Safety Committee member and designated MTCU Common Core trainer, Bruce is a proven leader who demonstrates that safety takes top priority in everything he does. Bruce has been actively involved in the continual development and implementation of the occupational health and safety policies, programs, procedures and training at CBM.

Wesely LawlerEquipment Technician, Walker Aggregates Inc.

Wesely plays a pivotal role in maintaining safety at Walker. His many initiatives include designing and implementing first-aid rooms at Duntroon Quarry and Anten Mills Pit. In addition, Wesely regularly contributes to the health and well-being of his colleagues by sharing his knowledge of jobsite equipment and the risks it may pose to employees and visitors.

Rick LawsSuperintendent, Walker Aggregates Inc.

Combining a passion for safety and his expertise as a leader, Rick’s day-to-day oversight of Walker’s Duntroon Quarry, Anten Mills and Edgar pits has resulted in a combined total of 781,497 person-hours worked (10+ years) without an LTI. His unwavering adherence to safety regula-tions and policies helps ensure all pit employees make it home without incident on a daily basis.

Matt MacDonaldManager, Health and Safety, James Dick Construction Limited

For over 15 years, Matt has been the go-to expert for safety at James Dick Construction. He is responsible for the design and imple-mentation of the company’s safety system, and his dedication to training ensures all employees are up to speed on all safety and risk aversion initiatives. Matt’s knowledge, expertise and initiative in the areas of health and accident prevention make him a company staple.

Chad McCombPlant Manager, Lafarge Canada Inc.

Chad’s safety stewardship at the plants in Woodstock and Downie has brought effective change to both job sites. In addition to having a hand in Lafarge’s universal Emergency Response Plan template for all Lafarge aggregate sites in southwest Ontario, Chad has made improvements to Woodstock Quarry traffic flow, and has enacted a gap analysis for the plant concerning height risks for any job required for every piece of equipment.

Roger McGillvraySuperintendent, Walker Aggregates Inc.

Roger’s day-in and day-out commitment to creating a safe workplace has brought considerable gains to Walker’s Severn Quarry. Through his safety stewardship, the quarry has worked 309,965 person-hours without an LTI, contributing to a positive public image for the industry and proving that quarrying can be done in a responsible and risk-free manner.

Wayne Randell(Previously) Foreman, Dufferin Aggregates - a division of Holcim (Canada) Inc. (Now employed with CBM Aggregates.)

Wayne contributed greatly to safety in all positions with Dufferin over his 18 years with the organization. As site foreman and management representative for the HHSC at Dufferin’s Millcreek site, Wayne actively promoted a culture of health and safety through extensive training, regular assess-ments and rigorous plant inspections. His efforts helped the Millcreek site achieve 4,633 days (12.7 years) without an LTI.

Dominique StievenartHealth and Safety Representative, James Dick Construction Limited

As a role model for risk assessment at James Dick Construction, Dominique works tirelessly to enhance the safety culture at Guelph Limestone. He is recognized among his peers as a natural leader who champions the true meaning of the Internal Responsibility System in every aspect of his work and employee training. Dominique’s all-encompassing approach to safe work practices has made him invaluable to the company’s ongoing commitment to safety.

Eric RobsonPrimary Haul Truck Operator, Dufferin Aggregates - a division of Holcim (Canada) Inc.

Since starting his post with Dufferin in 1987, Eric has made safety a top priority at the company’s Milton Quarry. His involvement with the Milton Quarry Joint Health & Safety Committee, his leadership within the quarry’s health and safety programs, and his unwavering drive to enhance jobsite practices have enhanced workplace safety within the quarry and across the company.

Joe WilsonPlant Supervisor, Aggregate Processing Services Ltd.

Joe’s commitment to workplace safety has made him a key member of Aggregate Processing Services’ team. His ability to swiftly assess and address workplace hazards has contributed to another accident-free year for the company, and his skills in safety training and mentorship play a crucial role in protecting the health and well-being of all site employees.
