WHO's forecast is that the global market for herbal products would be of the order of $5 trillion by year 2050. Herbal remedies would become increasingly relevant as people seek to avail natural remedies.

Thailand has tremendous diversity of living organisms and has had policies to conserve and sustained use of its biological resources since early 1900s.

There have been several laws and regulations established; the first one being the Forestry Act of 1941, amended in 1989. Two laws, the Plant Variety Protection Act 1999 and the “Protection and Promotion of Intellectual Thai Traditional Medicine Act 2006” were enacted and implementations.

WHO Guidelines on

Good Agricultural and Collection Practices

for Medicinal Plants (for GACP)

Control of raw materials (refer to the GACPand Quality Control Methods for Medicinal

Plant Products)

� Cultivation : To use the safety field.

Harvest : Crop harvesting should not be carried out in wet (dew or rain) or high humidity conditions, i.e. wherever possible harvesting should be carried out in dry, low humidity conditions. Harvesting equipment should be clean and well maintained.

� Drying : The crop should be unloaded and unpacked as soon as possible on arrival at the drying facilities. It must not be allowed to stand for extended periods in direct sunlight and must be protected from rain.

� Packing : After removal of damaged material and foreign bodies, the sound dried crop should be packed in clean dry sacks, bags or boxes, preferably new.

� Storage and transport : Packed dried crop should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated building, with minimal variation in diurnal temperature and with good air ventilation.

� Equipment : Equipment used for the production and handling of crops should be easily cleaned to minimize contamination. Dry cleaning is recommended. Where the use of water is unavoidable, equipment should be dried as quickly as possible.

� Personnel : Personnel handling food material should maintain a high degree of and be provided with suitable personal hygiene changing facilities and toilets with hand washing facilities.

� Documentation : Keeping records of fertilizer, pesticide and herbicide used on each batch of harvested material is highly desirable.

� Training and education : Training and education of personnel, whether handling crops or managing crop production, in appropriate production techniques is highly recommended. This can be achieved by using experts from local agricultural institutes or those provided by the buyers.

� Quality control : representatives of producer and buyer should check Compliance with the recommendations of this GAP-MP through regular inspection visits with expertise in good agricultural and hygienic practice.
