Measurement of Carbon Dioxide in Surface Water: The ocean sequesters on average about
30 % of the CO2 produced by combustion of fossil fuel and other human activities. The
uptake changes with region and season. The partial pressure of CO2 in surface water (pCO2)
controls to a large extent the flux of CO2 between ocean and atmosphere. The automated
pCO2 system on the EXPLORER OF THE SEAS provides coverage to determine the CO2
fluxes in the Caribbean Sea.
Trend of pCO2 with time along the Eastern track (see above). The red colors on the figure at left indicate that the region is
a source of CO2 to the atmosphere blue that it is a
sink. The Caribbean Sea releases CO2 to the
atmosphere during the summer and fall and takes up
CO2 in spring.
AVHRR images of aerosol optical depth for the tropical North Atlantic Caribbean region for June (a) and December (b) (Husar et al.,1997) Warmer colors indicate higher concentrations of atmospheric aerosols.
