The CSIRO has played a key role in ground-breaking new technology that has led to a world-first in surgery, using a 3D printed titanium sternum and rib implant.

The 3D printed body parts were designed and manufactured in Melbourne.

The technology that allowed a Spanish cancer patient to receive the titanium sternum and rib implant was a collaboration between a Melbourne-based medical device company, Anatomics, and CSIRO’s 3D printing facility, Lab 22, at Clayton.

The breakthrough is an impressive example of what can be achieved when industry and science come together.

After being diagnosed with a chest wall sarcoma, the 54-year-old man’s surgical team made the decision to remove his sternum and a portion of his rib cage and replace it with an implant.

The implant was designed and manufactured by medical device

company, Anatomics, who utilised the CSIRO’s 3D printing facility, Lab 22.

The surgical team, Dr José Aranda, Dr Marcelo Jimene and Dr Gonzalo Varela from Salamanca

Australian industry will take centre stage under the new Turnbull government.

The appointment of Christopher Pyne as Minister for Innovation and Industry marks a new era for Australian manufacturing.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull described the Innovation and Industry portfolio as being at the centre "of one of our most important agendas.”

“If we want to remain a prosperous, first world economy with a generous social welfare safety net we must be more competitive, we must be more productive, above all we must be more innovative, Mr Turnbull said after announcing the new Cabinet.

"We have to work more agilely, more innovatively; we have to be more nimble in the way we seize the enormous opportunities presented to us. We're not seeking to proof ourselves against the future. We are seeking to embrace it."

PYNE SET TO DRIVE INDUSTRY INNOVATION AGENDAsaid: "With a sweeping tide of new disruptive technologies that will entirely transform the way we live and the way we work, Australian industry must continue to lead the world in research and innovation, ensuring our nation can seize the opportunities ahead.

"We have the researchers, the universities, the institutions such as CSIRO, Questacon and others who are world leading. We have co-operative research centres and industry growth centres and a very wide range of collaborative ventures around the globe. We have a major agenda in the commercialisation of research outcomes.

"We have the technical capacity and capability to remain a nation with industries that offer the jobs of the 21st century.

“As minister I will be working with industry and our institutions to continue on this course and look forward to the challenges ahead."

As member for the SA seat of Sturt, Mr Pyne will be keen to rebuild the government's standing in South Australia, hit hard by decisions taken by the Abbott

government on submarines and motor vehicles. The former Minister for Education and Training,

replaces Ian Macfarlane, one of five Abbott government cabinet ministers exiting the front bench.

Mr Pyne was elected to the House of Representatives for the seat of Sturt in 1993.

In his time in Parliament he has been Shadow Minister for Education, Manager of Opposition Business in the House of Representatives, Shadow Minister for Justice, Minister for Ageing, Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Parliamentary Secretary for Family and Community Services.

Before entering Parliament, Mr Pyne practised as a solicitor. He is married with four children.

“It is a great honour for me to accept the Prime Minister's offer to become the Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science and Leader of the Government in the the first Turnbull Ministry,” Mr Pyne said.

“Having served for five years as Shadow Minister and then two years as Minister for Education and Training,

I am delighted by this new opportunity to serve in an economic portfolio that is central to the future of our nation.

“There has never been a more exciting time to be an Australian, as the Prime Minister has said.”

IR REFORM SHOULD BE TOP PRIORITY FOR TURNBULL GOVERNMENT

AUSTRALIAN MANUFACTURING BACK IN THE SPOTLIGHT

EDITOR TIM MICHAEL

The change in Government leadership and the appointment of a new-look Cabinet has given manufacturers renewed hope, resulting in an immediate bounce in business and consumer confidence.

It will be interesting to see whether the Turnbull Government can achieve something the Abbott Government failed to do – reform Australia’s antiquated and restrictive Industrial Relations laws.

The Australian Industry Group, the peak body representing the industrial sector, claims the current workplace relations system is not delivering the adaptability that employers and employees need.

Urgent change is needed to restore the balance.

A Productivity Commission report has made several key recommendations aimed at creating a fairer system for both employers and employees. The report follows a wide-ranging inquiry into Australia's Workplace Relations Framework.

Recommendations include reducing Sunday penalty rates in the retail, fast food and hospitality industries and ending four-yearly award reviews. And Fair Work’s lop-sided unfair dismissal laws should also be urgently reviewed.

Such recommendations do not sit well with the union movement, which has already indicated its resistance to such moves.

The Abbott Government was reluctant to wage a war with the unions over IR, to avoid another “WorkChoices” scare campaign and its impact on the electorate.

The Abbott government made a half-hearted attempt to push some IR reform measures through the Senate last year – which were firmly blocked by the Labor Opposition, Greens and cross benches.

It has since been pressured into taking a backseat in the community debate in industrial relations.

But times have changed. We now have a golden opportunity

to revisit those reforms by engaging in consultation with all interested parties.

Sitting on hands should not be an option. It’s time for the Turnbull Government to step up and push for the PC’s recommendations to be implemented as a priority.

But before that can be achieved there needs to be a proper debate with all parties concerned. At the same time we need a robust debate on tax reform to improve productivity and stimulate the economy.

It’s time for Government to stand up to union intimidation.

Enough is enough. If Australia is to compete globally, and if

we are to become a 24/7 economy, it’s time to make some urgent adjustments to our constrictive workplace laws.

A changing of the guard in Government has brought with it a renewed focus on Australian industry – and on the need for innovation.

Australia now has a minister for innovation as well as an assistant minister for innovation.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has described the Innovation and Industry portfolio as being at the centre "of one of our most important agendas.”

He acknowledged that if Australia wants to remain a prosperous, first world economy we must be “more competitive, more productive … and above all more innovative.”

We couldn’t agree more. The appointment of former Education

Minister Christopher Pyne to this key portfolio paves the way for a new era of advanced manufacturing in Australia.

And the elevation of tech savvy Gen Y QLD MP Wyatt Roy to the position of Assistant Minister for Innovation reinforces the Government’s commitment to supporting research institutions and new technology.

Wyatt Roy has made a point of visiting innovative countries like Israel and the US to get a valuable insight into how best to commercialise IP and local research.

He is certain to deliver knowledge, energy and boundless enthusiasm to this portfolio.

Minister Roy is the first to admit that

Australia must embrace the future, or risk being left behind.

In his first media statement as Industry Minister Mr Pyne warned that “the sweeping tide of new disruptive technologies will entirely transform the way we live and the way we work.”

He says Australian industry must continue to lead the world in research and innovation – ensuring our nation can seize the opportunities ahead.

Mr Pyne indicated he would encourage greater collaboration between industry and researchers, research institutions and universities.

Industry can be heartened by Prime Minister Turnbull’s recognition of the importance of research and development.

Industry Update acknowledges the role played by the previous Minister Ian Macfarlane in guiding the manufacturing industry through some extremely difficult times.

Mr Macfarlane penned a regular column for Industry Update readers and we thank him for his valuable contribution.

It’s now up to the new-look Ministry for Industry, Innovation and Science to drive the Government's ambitious new program.

We will wait to see whether they can deliver.

A Safer Way to Load Containers and Trailers

Destuff-IT at work with 2operators

Destuff-IT and Restuff-IT are PLC controlled ergonomic assist devices that help workers to manually load and unload products onto containers and trailers. The units use an on-board drive system to move in and out of the containers and have a pivoting conveyor, with a high grip belt. This can be effortlessly guided upand down, left or right to place a product in the desired position & a height adjustable platform puts operators in the best ergonomic position. This means workersare less fatigued and the risk of muscle strain and injury from repetitive lifting, twisting, carrying and overhead reaching is significantly reduced. The innovation is based on a unique blend of design concepts, a firm grasp of ergonomicprinciples and the implementation of technology to address this global problem. Productivityand efficiency is enhanced through optimized worker positioning. Handling movements areminimised, contributing to more throughput and greater handling capacity. These devices are designed for demanding, continuous multi-shift operations and to beintegrated with extendable or flexible conveyor systems. The self-propelled machines have an integrated DC powered dual travel drive and steeringsystem capable of negotiating dock leveller slopes and transition plates while driving in andout of containers or trailers. This means it can be easily and quickly moved to another dockposition and is capable of towing host conveyor sections.Users can achieve significant ROI savings through productivity gains, reduced injuries, enhanced dock utilisation and integration with existing conveyors. In a recent one-week trial, one prospect was able to see an increase in case rate of 59percent and a reduction in overall labour of 49 percent.

Grinding into corners has always been time consuming and usually difficult.

A good example is weld seam dressing for Tee butt welds or tee butt corner welds, which relates to the Australian Standard AS/NZS 1554.5.

Now, working with fillet welds has never been easier with the revolutionary PFERD Polifan Curve grinding disc.

Imagine a flap-like grinding disc with a completely new design of flap. This design is like no other, unlike its predecessors, which only have abrasive flaps on the face, the Polifan Curve has the abrasive material wrapped around the outer edge from the face all the way to the other side of the disc.

This feature creates a perfect radius on the outer edge, which makes it the ultimate product for producing perfectly blended fillet welds in both structural and decorative applications.

These discs are available in two thicknesses to suit up to 5mm and up to 8mm fillet welds, both producing outstanding results. When working with these discs much less effort is required,

and vibration generated, than using burrs to complete the same task.

Further, you can save much time and money when using the Polifan Curve on a given fillet weld due to the speed at which work can be completed.

No longer do you have to use time consuming multiple step processes that only produced mediocre results. I have not seen anything that yet compares and you need to see this product in action.

Blending fillet welds has changed, and the PFERD Polifan Curve is the answer.

Pferd is known globally for manufacturing quality abrasives that suit a wide

range of applications from cutting to grinding, milling, filing, brushing, polishing,

burrs and much more. Established in Germany, Pferd is a

family owned organisation with over 200 years of experience.

Pferd Australia offers clients national warehousing, sales, training and service coverage throughout Australia.

Their diverse range suits industry sectors including automotive, steel work/metal work, mining, aerospace, engineering, shipyards, foundries, steel

mills and more. Contact PFERD for more information

Use of illegal drugs in the workplace can be a challenge to both safety and productivity. It can leave employees injured and deadlines unmet, and it can significantly affect your organisation’s bottom line.

In 2008, NCETA reported 2.5% of the Australian workforce identified working while under the influence of illicit drugs. The most commonly used illicit drug in Australia is cannabis, but drugs like ice, which employees perceive to improve performance, are also starting to make a mark.

While many in HR, safety or management roles believe we could easily identify the symptoms of drug use, it is important to remember drugs affect everyone differently – bloodshot eyes on one employee may mean cannabis, while on another may mean fatigue. For those of us in roles responsible for the health, well-being and productivity of others – and also held accountable for

team overheads – understanding what to look for when it comes to workplace drug use, and more importantly, how to manage it, can be key to an injury-free, high performing workforce.

Drugs like cannabis will often have the opposite effect on users than drugs like ice. Cannabis users may be less coordinated, less focused and slower to react. In contrast, ice users may seem ‘amped up’, talkative and may perspire a lot. Identifying these symptoms is the first step to managing drug use at work (especially in organisations that don’t drug test).

Managing employee drug use is a delicate process that should be undertaken with care for the employee,

their colleagues and with the organisation’s drug policy in mind. If there is no proof of use (for example a positive test), conversations should start around performance, and should avoid accusation.

The National Cannabis Prevention and Information Centre is a not-for-profit dedicated to providing valuable, free resources about drug use. You can find our FREE guide to workplace drug policy and factsheets here, or why not attend our conference where we will cover the basics of cannabis use and simple interventions, drug driving, and future policies that may impact drug use at work. For more information: www.ncpic.org.au

University Hospital, knew the surgery would be difficult due to the complicated geometries involved in the chest cavity.

“We thought, maybe we could create a new type of implant that we could fully customise to replicate the intricate structures of the sternum and ribs,” Dr Aranda said.

“We wanted to provide a safer option for our patient, and improve their recovery post-surgery.”

That’s when the surgeons turned to Anatomics.

After assessing the complexity of the requirements, Anatomics CEO Andrew Batty said the solution lay in metallic 3D printing.

“We wanted to 3D print the implant from titanium because of its complex geometry and design,” Mr Batty said.

“While titanium implants have previously been used in chest surgery, designs have not considered the issues surrounding long term fixation.

“Flat and plate implants rely on screws for rigid fixation that may come loose over time. This can increase the risk of complications and the possibility of reoperation.”

Through high resolution CT data, the Anatomics team was able to create a 3D reconstruction of the chest wall and tumour, allowing the surgeons to plan and accurately define resection margins.

“From this, we were able to design an implant with a rigid sternal core and semi-flexible titanium rods to act as prosthetic ribs attached to the sternum,” Mr Batty said.

Working with experts at CSIRO’s 3D printing facility Lab 22, the team then manufactured the implant out of surgical grade titanium alloy.

“We built the implant using our $1.3 million Arcam printer,” Alex Kingsbury from CSIRO’s manufacturing team said.

“The printer works by directing an electron beam at a bed of titanium powder in order to melt it. This process is then repeated, building the product up layer-by-layer until you have a complete implant.

“3D printing has significant advantages over traditional manufacturing methods, particularly for biomedical applications.

“As well as being customisable, it also allows for rapid prototyping – which can make a big difference if a patient is waiting for surgery.”

Once the prosthesis was complete it was couriered to Spain and implanted into the patient.

“The operation was very successful,” Dr Aranda said.

“Thanks to 3D printing technology and a unique resection template, we were able to create a body part that was fully customised and fitted like a glove.”

HYSTER AWARDED MAJOR TRUCK DEALHyster Company has been selected as the successful bidder by Pacific National for a 31-unit big truck deal.

Pacific National, one of Australia’s largest rail companies has ordered 21 Hyster ReachStackers, five masted container handlers and five heavy duty forklifts with two boasting 48 tons of lifting capacity and three with 18 tons of lifting capacity.

Hyster along with one of its dealers, Adaptalift, worked with Pacific National to evaluate each site across Australia (Perth, Melbourne, Moolabin, Townsville, Adelaide and Sydney), where the trucks would be deployed in rail terminals, moving containers, trailers and steel coils.

“A good analysis of each site’s application, together with the detailed tender document allowed us to provide tailored solutions for each site, meeting Pacific National’s diverse requirements”, said Jan-Willem van den Brand, Manager of the Big Truck Application Center for Hyster. “The tender focussed on total cost of ownership, ergonomics and safety.”

Since Pacific National’s various rail sites

handle different types of loads, ranging from high top containers with round roofs to curtain containers with bottom pick points, the company needed solutions that were adaptable. To meet these requirements, Hyster will provide customized ReachStackers that allow operators to easily swap between a standard container spreader to a piggy back spreader, enabling quick response to changing operational demands of loads and helping to optimize fleet usage.

The Hyster big trucks that will be deployed at Pacific National’s various Australian locations will feature modular designs helping to minimize the variation of parts needed to support the trucks, making servicing and operator training easier.

Website Ranking:Over the past few years, the amount of

changes Google has made to their algorithm has been profound, and now that 2015 is here, these changes are only increasing in frequency. But this evolution is good. Google wants to reward great content. They want to make searchers happy. And they certainly want as few searchers as possible using another search engine.

Ultimately, the website judged to have the highest quality information will be the site that has the best ranking. This means the Google algorithm is being constantly updated to achieve this aim. What is changing?

As a result of previous attempts by site owners to artificially manipulate their rankings (keyword stuffing, link generation etc.), Google has been refining its algorithm and (particularly) over the past 2-3 years have been in the process of rolling out three major update platforms, the last of which takes effect in 2015:

Update 1: Panda – aimed at ensuring sites with low quality content did not make it to the top rankings. Targets sites with little original content, unnecessarily keyword heavy content or old content. This ranking is influenced by

human “quality raters” who review and index the site. There have been 27 Panda updates since its launch in 2011.

Update 2: Penguin – implemented to catch sites deemed to be spamming their search results, in particular those doing so by buying links or obtaining them through link networks designed primarily to boost Google rankings. There have been at least six Penguin updates to Google's search algorithm since 2012.

Update 3: Effectiveness/Authenticity/Trust (E.A.T) – In 2015 a new ranking system takes effect where a broad spectrum of digital behaviours will determine a sites rankings.

As E.A.T rolls out there will be a need for SEO and Content Strategy to become inexorably linked and co-ordinated. This is sometimes collectively known as building a site’s “authority”.

Ultimately, the end game for Google is the site that is highest in its rankings is the one that looks, acts and behaves as the authoritative market information leader. The role of SEO in the E.A.T rollout:

The role of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is to drive high quality “free” traffic from a range of sites, including but not limited to:

• Google • Local directories and review sites• PR, Authority, video and social sites

With Google as the main search engine being used worldwide, we must engineer our site to maximise its quality (authority) score with respect to the Google search algorithm. What does this mean for businesses?

Ensuring an integrated technical, on-site and off-site program is critical to meeting the E.A.T criteria. This includes but is not limited to: • Integrating an offline and online digital strategy that reaches beyond the website• Reviewing how the website and content is structured including web copy, links, page titles, H1 & H2 tags and alt image tags• Continually maintaining and updating content including page structure, web copy, white pages and video content• Ensuring the links to and from your site are not broken and lead to meaningful content• Repurposing content for example, uploading videos to YouTube, transcribing video content into case studies, adding content onto social network channels and Blogs and linking with partner sites• Ensuring your site is active on other parts

of the Google network, e.g. Google AdWords (SEM), YouTube and Google Businesses What to do now – the easy wins

Companies that meet these new Google requirements the quickest will gain a search advantage. Some of the issues above will take some time but there are a few obvious and impactful actions that can be taken immediately. 1. Start developing great video content2. Have website structure reviewed3. Have content plan and repurpose content How IMA can help

As from February 1 this year, IMA have acquired Brown Cow Media, a content development specialist business. Owner Daryl Brown commenced the business as a video production house and extended its services to include all digital content planning and execution. As part of the IMA team, Daryl will assume the role of Digital Content Producer.

A year after winning the NSW Green Globe sustainability award for their new lights in the Concert Halls, one of Australia’s most iconic monuments has seen a dramatic improvement in their facilities due to the new illuminating installments.

This award honors a heritage-listed building in NSW that has successfully developed and integrated environmental management and sustainable practices into the building's fabric and management.

This category rewards innovative actions taken to improve the efficiency and general environmental performance of the building, whilst retaining the asset's heritage values.

Substantially reducing the power usage all the while improving venue experience for both performers and audience, the two year installation of the LED lights has proven to have paid off, gaining them recognition both with the Green Globes award, and in-house financial and emission savings.

The project was a collaboration between Australian supplier Lumascape and the Opera House’s lighting contractor, State Automation, to meet the needs of the Opera House ensuring that everything was complaint with the heritage requirements.

The environment and financial benefits have been nothing less than a successful endeavour as the Opera House has seen in the year a 75 per cent reduction in electricity consumption, with estimated annual savings of about $70,000, reduced need for staff to work in ceiling space, an increased capacity to create specific lighting affects and a removal of about four tones of air conditioning ducting.

The previous light system generated a large amount of heat, which required other infrastructure to be put into place; the new system however lowers the heat produced and means that air extradition ducting can be removed. Also prior to the new lighting system the Concert Hall lights had a life span of 300-1000 hours and needed changing several times throughout the year. The new system sees that the changes only need to happen once every nine months.

The Concert Hall lighting upgrade has also provided artistic benefits for a range of performances that provide, state-of-the-art services to performing arts partners and venue hirers at a lower cost. By changing the crown lights from fixed white lights to RBGWA LED fixtures they have increased the

opportunity for lighting effects – supporting the Opera House’s ongoing commitment to be a center of excellence and innovation in performing arts.

“The Concert Hall lighting upgrade is an excellent example of how we can renew the Opera House to meet the needs and expectations of 21st-century artists, audiences and the broader community," said Naomi Martin, Environmental Sustainability Manager, Sydney Opera House.

The wide-ranging effects are available all without the extra costs that are usually involved, maximizing effectiveness while providing improved functionality and artistic capability.

Everyone seems to be benefiting from the new lighting as even the lighting operators have been claimed to enjoy the opportunity to learn and use new industry-leading technology and the production team has also introduced new procedures utilizing the upgrade to improve the artistic lighting design options for performers.

The challenges that the project faced came primarily as trying to find a method were the upgrades could be made while still maintaining the architectural requirements.

To do this, the team utilized heat sinks that passively removed heat from the LED light rather than the fans removing noise interference along side installing temperature-monitoring system to ensure the long life of the fixtures.

The next step for the opera house is to showcase the benefits of this project internationally. The Opera House has discussed the design, construction and project benefits with other Australian and international theatres and showcased the lights to the C40 Council delegates from around the world who met in Sydney last month.

“It’s also been a great way to showcase the Opera House’s commitment to sustainability in a more prominent way,” Ms Martin says.

“To date, many of our environmentally led projects have been ‘back of house’ so it’s exciting to have energy efficiency showcased in one of our most spectacular venues – the Concert Hall.

“It also highlights the potential to implement new technologies and improve the environmental performance of older or heritage buildings such as the iconic Sydney Opera House.”

Look out solar panels, there’s a new “first of its kind” solar technology in town!

Its makers said it’s engineered to outperform rooftop panels by 50-fold, and at a fraction of the cost.

And this groundbreaking invention could potentially have the capability of turning an ordinary window into an electric socket.

Made up of the organic polymers carbon and hydrogen, the technology converts sun or artificial light sources into electricity when applied as a film layer to windows. Despite competition from many similar technologies not yet on the market, this innovation has stood the test of time.

For nearly 20 years, in response to global warming, numerous companies, research institutes, and federal agencies have been quietly developing and testing innovative ways to efficiently reduce greenhouse gas emissions. When the US federal government began investing in carbon reducing projects in 2007, the solar industry ramped up its R&D.

With the demand for low cost, energy-efficient renewable energy increasing, company executives are

clamouring to keep their groundbreaking inventions a secret, hoping to beat the competition in the race to commercialization.

And while many corporate strategies veered off course resulting in company closures, executives at Solar Window Technologies Inc (SWT) said their unique product, which is applied wet, and then dries as a film coating, is nearly ready for the market.

This electricity generating technology is made from organic earth-abundant materials, making it different from the plant-based photosynthesis technologies, which create chemical energy.

John A. Conklin, CEO and president of SWT, explained that when light hits the technology, the mobility of electrons is activated, and that electron movement is electricity.

The Columbia, Maryland-based company is focused on scaling up the technology for its product, SolarWindow, which is a transparent, electricity generating coating for glass and plastics being developed for tall towers and skyscrapers — to turn them into electricity generators. One day the technology could be applied to single-family homes across America.

The company’s first working prototype, created in 2009, was a quarter of a grain of rice in size. Later prototypes grew incrementally in size to today’s largest at 30cm x 30cm.

The vision is to be able to generate renewable electricity through solar windows on all four sides of skyscrapers.

Conklin said SolarWindows can power a 50-story building, while it would take six to eight acres of land for a conventional solar panel array to power the same building. “From a big picture perspective that basically takes all of

the area of Central Park away just for a few buildings,” he said.

According to Conklin, the investment in SolarWindows for a 50-story building would be recovered after just one year of energy cost savings, compared to the six to eight years it takes for solar panels.

The solar window would be connected using the same wiring-based system as solar panels, but it would be connected in such a way that you don’t see wires coming from the modules.

The idea for getting the technology to market is to license it and the know-how to major glass manufacturers and fabricators around the world, who will bring the final product to fruition.

International energy expert, Peter Fox-Penner, a principal at economic and financial consulting firm The Brattle Group, said new solar products are a small fraction of the current energy supply, and that a large number of similar products exist, with more being invented.

“This technology fits in amongst many, many technologies that do similar things that are all going to be part of the landscape and all part of compliance with the Clean Power Plan,” he said, referring to the federal government’s plan for reducing carbon emissions.

Fox-Penner expects a gradual conversion to a largely renewable grid as more technologies are added in. He notes that regulatory rules are being rewritten so that it’s possible for utilities that run the power grid to make use of these new technologies.

Conklin is working to ensure that liquid electricity is among the choices, but said although there are similar technologies, they are still very different. He compared the liquid electricity technology to others that use dye sensitized solar cells, and another one that utilizes metals such as lead. He said those technologies are being used for rooftop solar panels, but SolarWindow will be integrated into the building.

Founded in 1998 under the name Octillion Corp, the company underwent several transformations and experienced financial losses over the years. Continued strides in the last five years include partnerships and relationships with the U.S. Department of Energy National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and award-winning scientists and engineers from companies like Royal Dutch Shell and Duke Energy.

Conklin said Octillion Corp. was a technology incubator and development company. At that time the company had begun working on motion power, which later resulted in the formation of a subsidiary called Kinetic Energy Corp (KEC) in 2008. Octillion also changed its name to New Energy Technologies in 2008.

Around the same time, one of the directors in the company was looking at organic light-emitting diode technology and trying to determine if there was a potential use for it in the biotech space. Their discovery was made when a little bit of electricity was generated by applying a coating to glass. Although the voltage was very, very, low, it was the spark of an idea.

That spark led to the formation of another subsidiary,

WHY ‘LIQUID’ SOLAR TECHNOLOGY COULD BE A GAME CHANGERRESEARCHERS DEVELOP MORE EFFICIENT, MORE AFFORDABLE RENEWABLE ENERGY USING ORDINARY WINDOWSARLEEN RICHARDS

New Energy Solar Corporation in 2009. This subsidiary entered into an agreement with the University of South Florida, where SolarWindow was established, and a strategy for commercialization was realized.

In furtherance of the commercialization strategy, in March 2015 New Energy Technologies was renamed SolarWindow Technologies Inc.

Conklin touts the company’s success in outlasting strong competitors such as Konarka Technologies and Pythagoras Solar.

“Both of those companies had very different marketing strategies,” he said, “and as a result of their business strategies and product development, neither one of them are in business.”

For example, Conklin explains that despite all the money that Konarka invested in its technology, which was intended for building integrative photo voltaics (a similar application as SolarWindow) it commercialized a messenger bag and a solar umbrella, losing sight of its original goal.

“When we’re looking at success, and we’re looking at commercialization, a company must remain focused on its core strength,” Conklin emphasized, “and not dilute that with other product ideas that may sound great.”

In 2010, Conklin became the CEO and president of SWT at a time when its stock was at a low of 51 cents

per share. Under his leadership, the stock has risen to $2.30 per share and SolarWindow has advanced toward commercialization.

Infectiously positive and jovial, Conklin, who lives and works in upstate New York, has been married to his wife Lisa Conklin for 27 years and they have two sons in their 20s.

He was sought out by SWT in early 2010 to help the company identify ways to improve the methods of applying coatings and improve performance power and uniformity.

With 30 years of industrial, commercial, and renewable and alternative energy experience and a particular background in applying coatings as uniformly as possible, this almost 55-year-old family man was a good fit.

Conklin said the company implemented his recommendations and saw favourable results. In less than a year, the board of directors offered him the position as CEO.

But Conklin is no stranger to leadership roles as he already owns two companies. He takes pride in building teams. “I am an advocate of helping individuals excel and find their strengths among weaknesses and turning weaknesses into strengths,” he explained.

With Conklin at the helm, the company has seen some major accomplishments, such as new records for the size

and performance of a solar window (validated by the United States Department of Energy at NREL), and an increase in shareholder numbers.

According to a June report by GTM Research, a division of Greentech Media, which provides market analysis, the cumulative global market for solar electricity is expected to triple by 2020 to almost 700 gigawatts. It predicts demand will be almost entirely market-based by 2020, as compared to 2012 when almost all demand was based on direct incentives.

SWT is hoping to tap into that market and is soon expected to give more information on a timeline for bringing its products to market.

Although he is not willing to reveal more details about the products at this time, Conklin did say that one of the window designs could be a fixture that you would actually plug into.

In addition, SWT has fabricated its SolarWindow in architecturally attractive colours, which Conklin said building designers, architects, building developers, and owners want. He adds that SWT’s technology “is being built for high speed, high volume, roll-to-roll, and sheet-to-sheet processing.”

Fourth-year mechanical engineer apprentice Brodie Oakes is a worthy winner of the Apprentice of the Year title at this year’s NSW State Training Awards.

Showing brilliance beyond his years, the 21-year-old designed and built a piece of equipment for his workplace — saving his boss $60,000.

Brodie, from Hammondville in south-western Sydney, came up with the clever solution for his company Qenos after noticing the resin used to make polythene was going to waste.

With the help of another tradesman, he created a new resin filter for just $3500 — much less than the $65,000 and 12-month lead time Qenos was quoted for a factory one.

“The box filtering resin into the truck was pushing the air out, but resin was coming out too — this was a problem,” he said.

“After seeing how much it would cost to replace the filter, I said ‘I think we can do it a bit cheaper’.”

Brodie’s outstanding engineering skills earned him the NSW Training Awards Apprentice of the Year for the northern Sydney region, and the Environmental Award.

He was “on top of the world” after the win.“I’ve always been a high achiever and aimed to excel in

all that I do,” he said.Jason Porter, his team leader at Qenos, said Brodie is

a self-motivated individual with a thirst for understanding how things work.

“He’s thrown maturity beyond his years by continuing to self-improve and challenge himself,” Mr Porter said.

Brodie’s first part-time job was at a lawnmower shop in Sydney’s western suburbs, which sparked an interest in mechanics.

“I was doing services and oil changes, things you’d typically do in your first year as an apprentice,” he said.

“My passion for it developed from there. I finished Year 12, then started my apprenticeship.”

He stayed at the mower centre for about two and a half years.

Brodie has studied at TAFE NSW South Western Sydney Institute at Miller and Lidcombe and works the same trade as his father, but in a different industry.

Brodie will travel to Hobart in November, representing NSW at the Australian Apprentice of the Year.

TAFE South Western Sydney Institute engineering and mechanical trade graduate Eh Ler Taw won the Phil Darby Memorial Award, given to encourage a trainee or apprentice.

He overcame significant hardship, after his family fled Burma

(Myanmar), he grew up in a Thai refugee camp. His parents were both teachers and encouraged him to study. He completed his HSC with top marks, including a band six in English. His family relocated to Australia soon after.

If you make training an event it won't work, make it a process and it will.

Training is vital for not only the continued growth of a company but for the growth of its employees. You wouldn’t go to a heart surgeon who used techniques of 20 years ago or a fly on a Boeing 777 knowing the Captain hadn’t been in a flight simulator for 5 years. Training is a valuable part of business and personal growth.

Sadly for most, the truth is, that although people enjoyed the training on the day and it was delivered with good intentions, it doesn’t get the results it was intended to get. All too soon people fall back into their comfort zones and revert back to their old behavioral pattern.

Why does this happen? Because: 1. People see changing their behavior

as a risk.2. There is a lack of ongoing coaching

and reinforcement of the training by management.

3. Management forgets to ask the right questions or measure whether real change is taking place.

4. New approaches aren’t built into the everyday process of doing business and measured in performance appraisals.

To overcome these issues the company needs to follow the next 3 steps.

Step 1Be committed to the training from the

highest level down. The training needs to be communicated

to your people as being critical to the future success of the company. They need to hear and feel the determination and commitment from their management, to make a lasting change in the company’s approach to business.

Step 2: To get your people to believe in the

training it must be:Practical, simple, motivational and

clearly beneficial to them as employees. It must be planned and supported by

the high achieving managers within your company.

The training needs to be delivered by an experienced trainer who can engage and establish rapport with their audience very quickly. The trainer needs to be able to share war stories of not just the wins but also the defeats in their career. The

trainer also needs to present the training in a compelling way, so that the audience doesn’t just tune out to him/her as a trainer but also doesn’t discount any of the advice given.

Step 3: Once your people have done the

training and are motivated do not let up. You need to always remember: “Motivation gets them going, discipline keeps them going.”

The newly developed skills and behaviours must be applied immediately in practice to deliver real results and this must be monitored on an ongoing basis.

Six tips to make training work:1. Measure results. This can be as

informal as asking the right questions on a regular basis but measure results because if you don’t there won’t be any.

2. Get people to apply skills immediately after the sales training

3. Use your managers as coaches and measure how they are going as coaches

4. Bring in new approaches to your toolbox meetings and every day approaches.

5. Create a common language for measurement throughout the company.

6. Gain commitment from the top level

of management to roll out the new processWhen next you consider training for

your business including its employees, remember you need to have:

1. An understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of your current processes and what the impact might be of improving these processes

2. A strategy for managing effectiveness as a change process

3. A clear roadmap that includes core training but goes beyond that to incorporate reinforcement, coaching and application.

4. A process for measuring training impact.

5. Training programs take employees off the job. If the training is ineffective you not only pay for the training but for the lost productivity that could have been made in the lost time. The truth is training can work but only if it is practical, simple, motivational and monitored.

• GERMAN AUSTRALIA BUSINESS CONFERENCE

AUSSIES GET A TASTE OF GERMAN INGENUITY

SIEMENS TECHNOLOGY PROPELS AUSTRALIA'S NEWEST WIND FARM PROJECT

BY TIM MICHAELThe esteemed US business daily The Wall Street Journal recently described Germany’s global business chamber network as its “hidden economic weapon.”

And anyone who attended the Australia Germany Business Conference in Melbourne last month will understand why.

Hosted by the German-Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce the conference was a classic example of German precision, efficiency and meticulous attention to detail.

After attending the one-day conference it’s not hard to see why Germany has built such an outstanding reputation for high quality engineering and technology.

The conference’s major theme was Innovation and Collaboration: Drivers for Future Growth.

Held bi-annually, the Conference featured an impressive agenda of panel discussions, expert speakers and breakout sessions, with business leaders sharing their own unique experiences.

More than 130 participants from German and Australian companies and Chamber members attended.

Kristian Wolf, Executive Director of the

Chamber, opened the conference followed by a welcome from Ron Koehler, Chairman of the Chamber and CEO of Schenker Australia.

The VIC Minister for Industry Liliana D’Ambrosio then addressed the conference.

Special guest speakers included Dr. Eckhard Franz, Director External Economic Policy for BMWi Germany, Michelle Brown, President of AIDN-Vic Inc, Dr John White, Chairman of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems Australia and Michael Freyny, Executive General Manager of Siemens Australia.

Presentation topics covered the policy implications of innovation and globalisation for the German Mittelstand, collaboration between SMEs and Victorian defence, Australia’s capacity for the manufacture of naval ships and Australia’s transition to Industry 4.0.

Attendees were invited to participate in interactive panel discussions and Q&A sessions, including sessions on open innovation, hidden champions and innovation in Australian manufacturing.

Panel Moderators included Professor Penny Sackett, former Chief Scientist for

Australia, Christoph Petzoldt, Managing Director of Simon-Kucher & Partners and Scott Moffat, Managing Director of Pilz Australia.

Following the conference guests were invited to attend a Gala Dinner at the Sofitel, Melbourne.

“It is all about networking and exchanging ideas,” explained Kristian Wolf.

“We (the Chamber) look at all the issues that may affect German and Australian companies that are trying to do business with one another.

“For many small companies a small amount of red tape can be an inhibitor to investment in Australia.

“We try to resolve these kinds of issues.”Established in 1977 in Australia, the

Chamber has offices in Sydney and Melbourne and boasts nearly 400 members. They include major German companies and their subsidiaries, SMEs, service providers, law firms and accountants.

Mr Wolf estimates there are about 700 German companies with representatives in Australia.

This month the Chamber is planning to open a new branch in Brisbane to assist

QLD members.“It is the first major expansion since 1977,”

said Mr Wolf.He encouraged businesses to consider

joining the Chamber to take advantage of the many benefits.

“It can be a great learning experience. We give them some good ideas on how they can grow their business and we try to point them in the right direction.”

For the first time, the Chamber is planning to host a trade mission to Germany next year. Representatives from about 20 Australian companies will be invited to visit key German manufacturing facilities to gain a special insight into latest industry trends and innovation.

Siemens Ltd and Neoen Australia has signed an historic contract to build Australia's newest wind farm, which will help the ACT government meet its 90% renewable energy target by 2020.

ACT Minister for the Environment Simon Corbell said the Hornsdale wind farm was an important part of the ACT's plan to supply 90% of its electricity needs from renewable sources by 2020.

"As one of the winners of our first wind auction, Hornsdale plays a critical role in helping the ACT achieve its 90% renewable target," Mr Corbell said.

When up and running the Hornsdale wind farm will supply about a fifth of the territory's electricity needs.

“It's pleasing to see some of the world's leading renewable energy companies in Neoen and Siemens partnering to deliver

this important project."Siemens has more than 30 years

experience in wind power and has built around 13,000 wind turbines around the globe with a total capacity of 21 GW.

Siemens Australia is the turn-key builder of the wind farm and local Head of Energy David Pryke said the project demonstrated a win-win for all stakeholders.

"The new Hornsdale wind farm is good for the economy, good for the environment and, importantly, good for the Australia," Mr Pryke said.

"What matters to Australia also matters to Siemens and I'm delighted that Neoen entrusted Siemens to build and maintain the Hornsdale wind farm," said Mr Pryke. "And through this project we can demonstrate what can be achieved when combining Siemens' global technology with the ACT's commitment, Australia's natural resources and Neoen's vision."

This project really considers the bigger picture as it supports the Renewable Energy Centre of Excellence at the Canberra Institute of Technology, it includes employment, training and investment in both the ACT and South

Australia and provides benefits to the Hornsdale community for the life of the project.

Franck Woitiez, Managing Director of Neoen Australia, said: "Since 2012, Neoen has developed directly and indirectly, more than 1.5GW of Renewable Energy projects in Australia.

“The Hornsdale Wind Farm is our second project starting construction this year, and the quality of the relationship with all the Stakeholders, added to the exceptional wind resource at Hornsdale have turned it into a winning project under the ACT Wind Auction, an attractive asset for our shareholders and an great business opportunity for Siemens."

Construction on the project has already begun.

Siemens will provide the full turn-key project solution for the wind farm including 32 Siemens 3.2DD-113 wind turbines complete with associated civil and electrical infrastructure.

Siemens will also maintain the wind farm for Neoen on a long -term maintenance contract signed simultaneously with the EPC contract.

CAN INDUSTRY 4.0 BREATHE NEW LIFE INTO AUSTRALIAN MANUFACTURING?

Scott Moffat, Managing Director of Pilz Australia, a global industrial safety solutions and products supplier, was a special guest at the recent Australia Germany Business Conference held in Melbourne. Mr Moffat, a senior executive with over 20 years experience and extensive knowledge in the automation, energy, mineral processing and petrochemical industries, was chosen as Moderator for a lively discussion on Innovation in Australian Manufacturing – Is Industry 4.0 the answer? In this exclusive interview with Industry Update editor Tim Michael, Mr Moffat, explains why Industry 4.0 could be the answer to a successful and robust manufacturing sector in Australia ...

Q&A

1. What is Industry 4.0?

Industry 4.0 is termed as the 4th industrial revolution after mechanization (1st), electrification (2nd), computerization (3rd). It is a collective term used to describe various technologies that allow the creation of a cyber-physical manufacturing world in which all devices, sensors, plant, machinery etc. are interconnected and the data created can be analyzed and applied in real time. It is the digitization of the manufacturing world and includes such concepts as the Internet of Things and Big Data.

2. Are the majority of Australian manufacturers prepared for Industry 4.0?

No. But it is certainly not too late however Australian manufacturers need to start considering what role industry 4.0 will play for them in the future. There seems to be a lot more traction in Germany and the US on these new technologies right now than what there currently is in Australia.

3. Why should Australian manufacturers embrace it? What opportunities will it bring?

I think it represents a fantastic opportunity to re invigorate Australia manufacturing and allow us to compete on a global scale. Being a high cost country we will never be competitive in labour intensive manufacturing. It also gives us the opportunity to develop technologies that we can export across the globe to other Industry 4.0 enabled countries.

4. Which Australian manufacturing sectors are best suited to Industry 4.0?

It is best suited to manufacturing industries that manufacture products that are high value, high complexity or have large levels of customization and/or bespoke engineering.

5. What is expected of companies that follow Industry 4.0?

There will be a number of areas that will need to be considered but the main two areas will be; the most obvious capital investment decision required to bring businesses into the Industry 4.0 world with regards to their manufacturing infrastructure. However the more important investment is that of the future investment in people to ensure we have the prerequisite skills and knowledge required to implement the new Industry 4.0 technologies.

6. Germany is currently at the forefront of Industry 4.0 … should Australian manufacturers be following that lead?

Germany is certainly at the forefront of Industry 4.0 and the German government is investing heavily in this area. As result a large number of German based companies are collaborating in this space and are pegging their futures on the advent and global uptake of Industry 4.0

7. How is Pilz Australia planning the transition to Industry 4.0?

Like a number of the German based engineering companies Pilz is investing heavily in Industry 4.0 enabled technologies. It certainly sees this as the future of manufacturing and hence positioning itself as such. However being only a niche provider of Industrial automation products our products and services that relate to Industry 4.0 will be very specific. We are certainly reliant of some of the leading industry heavyweights with regards to the direction and application of some of the technologies and hence we need to also need to be aware and across these at Pilz to ensure our products and services remain applicable.

8. Can Australian manufacturing survive if it does not join the fourth industrial revolution?

I personally don’t think so

9. What role should government play in promoting/supporting Industry 4.0?

The government’s role will need to be a balance of ensuring it says out of the way of industry and focuses on ensuring it is providing the right framework & business environment for Australian companies to be successful. But coupled with government investment in areas that stimulate innovation, development & application of

Industry 4.0 relevant technologies. The government investment also needs to ensure that the innovation created in this space can be used by industry and has commercial outcomes.

Another good example is the government supporting locally based manufacturing projects that allow industry to “seed” the infrastructure, skills, technology & experience required to kick start & stimulate various manufacturing industries

10. Were you pleased with the response to the Australia Germany Business Conference and panel discussions?

I was very pleased with the Industry 4.0 panel and its discussions as we had great panelists from a variety of different areas. We had German engineering Heavyweight (Siemen’s), Australian manufacturing global success story (ANCA), the chair of the newly formed advanced manufacturing growth centre (AMGC) and the executive director of the industry group AAMC all providing meaningful insight into the role of Industry 4.0 in the future of Australian Manufacturing.

11. How can Australian manufacturers benefit by attending the conference?

We had a number great Australian & German manufacturing success stories present or join in discussions at the conferences and hopefully attendees got a feel for the common themes from these companies about made them successful and the challenges they faced.

12. Would you encourage more German/Australian companies to register for the next Conference?

Absolutely.

Safe Work Australia’s Statistics indicate that hearing loss still ranks very high in the national health priorities.

One in six Australians suffer some degree of hearing loss and it becomes clear that occupational hearing loss represents a significant social and economic burden for Australia.

A case of Occupational Noise Induced Hearing Loss can mean higher workers’ compensation insurance premiums and also litigation to the business involved.

There are also other costs, such as lower productivity, higher rate of absent employees, employee turnover, and higher accident rates.

Last but by far not the least price to pay, is the change of quality in life for affected individuals and the effect it has on their families.

Occupational hearing loss represents a significant social and economic burden for Australia and both, employers and workers, should take appropriate measures

– at work and off-the-job. Bearing all this in mind, intelligent

hearing technology has been a serious focus for Honeywell.

As a result, hearing loss in the workplace can now not be just more easily prevented or managed, but also in a much more educated and professional manner than ever before.

With a hi-tech Howard Leight product, such as VeriPRO, employers have a “real world” reliable and practical tool to take responsibility for protecting the health of their workers hearing.

Being exposed to such products will equip wearers of hearing protection with an insight that, no doubt will sustain into off-the-job behaviourisms.

VeriPRO Technology from Howard Leight by Honeywell measures real-world attenuation of earplugs.

This testing technology, provides earplug attenuation level testing in the workplace, combined with training and

record keeping. It works with any earplug and provides

results in minutes. It also enhances hearing conservation program effectiveness.

VeriPRO technology makes it possible for safety managers to ensure employees are getting the most out of their hearing protection devices.

VeriPRO consists of software and an optimised headset. VeriPRO determines the effectiveness of an employee's earplug fit over a range of frequencies and results in a Personal Attenuation Rating (PAR). It identifies the actual protection an employee receives from his or her earplug in each ear and allows safety managers to determine if their employees are receiving optimal protection, require additional training on how to fit their earplugs, or need to try a different model.

VeriPRO benefits both safety managers and employees alike.

For the safety manager, it fulfills requirements for training with

documented results. For employees, VeriPRO demonstrates the importance of hearing protection in the workplace, and helps employees select and compare protectors to find the best choice for their ears and specific applications.

Early intervention remains the key to reducing the rate of hearing loss in Australians, says Assistant Minister for Health Fiona Nash.

Speaking during Hearing Awareness Week in August, Ms Nash said hearing once damaged often cannot be repaired, echoing

the theme of the week: Hearing is precious and fragile.

“Hearing is something most Australians take for granted, but imagine a life without it,” Ms Nash said.

“One-in-six Australians currently experience some sort of hearing loss and this figure is expected to grow to one-in-four Australians by the year 2050 as the population ages.

“Hearing loss reduces our ability to communicate with our friends and family and to participate in social situations. It can also affect education and job prospects.

“Young people and those in loud working environments are particularly susceptible to

hearing loss from exposure to loud noises.”Ms Nash said the Australian Government

is investing in research through the Hearing Loss Prevention Program and the National Acoustic Laboratories to help identify the causes of preventable hearing loss.

“During 2015-16 we are helping to fund 30 projects to enhance services in remote locations, improve device functionality and improve identification and management of hearing loss in children,” she said.

“While research is helping to understand the reasons for hearing loss and how to prevent it, the Government, through the Hearing Services Program, is continuing to support people whose hearing is already

impaired.“The Voucher Program allows

Australians to access fully and partially subsidised hearing services from a national network of contracted service providers.

“On average, 290 new clients apply for the Voucher Program each day through the Hearing Services Online portal. The portal provides clients with faster access to services with the potential to receive services on the same day.”

The federal government invested $384 million last financial year so that more than 660,000 Australians could receive more than 1.2 million services under the Voucher Program.

People who work longer hours during the week significantly increase their chances of having a stroke, UK researchers have found.

In the largest research project of its kind, researchers from University College London reviewed 25 studies involving more than 600,000 men and women from across Europe, the US, and Australia.

Looking at the data, they found that those working 55 hours or more per week had a 33 percent greater risk of stroke than those working a more balanced 35-40 hour work week. Working the longer set of hours also brings with it a 13 percent increased risk of developing coronary heart disease.

“The pooling of all available studies on this topic allowed us to investigate the association between working hours and cardiovascular disease risk with greater precision than has previously been possible,” said Mika Kivimäki, professor of epidemiology, in an announcement of the results. “Health professionals should be aware that working long hours is associated with a significantly increased risk of stroke, and perhaps also coronary heart disease.”

The researchers found a clear pattern that the longer you work, the higher your risk for stroke and heart disease is - even when taking into account other known risk factors such as

age, sex, and socioeconomic status, plus behaviour modifiers such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and physical activity. Working between 41 to 48 hours gives you a 10 percent higher risk of stroke, which jumps to a 27 percent increased risk if you work 49 to 54 hours.

The findings, published in The Lancet, could have major implications for the way we approach the concept of work and the working week.

Apart from the social welfare concerns, “burning the midnight oil” doesn’t make sense economically either.

Billions of dollars are spent in Australia alone to treat and manage cardiovascular disease.

Urban Janlert, a researcher from Umeå University in Sweden said as well as cutting down work hours, workplaces should also consider implementing a policy of work-time power naps, which have been shown to have health benefits.

Women working in male-dominated workplaces are prone to anxiety, which could stay with them for years after they leave that environment.

This is one of the findings of a study by academics at the University of Indiana, which looked at industries where women are often a very small number of the total workforce such as manufacturing and construction.

Focusing on workplaces where men make up 85 per cent or more of the workforce, the researchers considered the level of the hormone cortisol in female co-workers.

These levels naturally fluctuate during the day but in stressful situations those changes become dysregulated.

Cortisol helps regulate a range of functions throughout the body including blood pressure and immune system responses and high levels over a prolonged period can be

extremely harmful to health.Bianca Manago, one of the academics involved in

the study, said that the team found that women in male-dominated workplaces displayed far more incidents of dysregulated cortisol levels than average. The results factored-out personality traits.

The findings are important for employers, especially in industries which are generally considered more male. That’s because the culture in those sectors may also be male-skewed, which reinforces that in an individual workplace.

Women joining a male-dominated workplace may say that they can ‘give as good as they get’ and join in with the ‘banter’ but if the business’ culture is at odds with what they are truly comfortable with then there could be problems.

In organizations which are addressing diversity it would

appear from this study that simply hiring more women may not address this underlying issue.

For a workforce that is both diverse and healthy, the business’ culture needs to be balanced.

With a growing need to manage operational costs and reduce maintenance costs many organisations are seeing the light – literally.

LED (Light Emitting Diodes) are fast gaining popularity due to the many

benefits they bring to the Australian workplace:• Reduced lighting costs (reductions of 50-60% are not uncommon)• Lower maintenance costs (the expected life span of a LED high bay

light may vary up to 50,000 hours – 4-5 times longer than old technology).• Short return on investment (ROI).

Zeus Appollo, a leading supplier of LED industrial lights, offers the following advice when choosing LEDs: • Quality is key. There are a host of options and varying prices but the “you get what you pay for” philosophy is very true with LED. • Consider the product that is best suited for your environment. This may include, heat, dust, lighting levels required for the work conducted. • Choose a light with correct IP(Ingress Protection) rating and certification

standards.• And very importantly, get your energy system checked. The power quality, consistency and behaviour of your energy delivery and plant is potentially lethal to LED lights, so have an assessment conducted by a suitably qualified professional before investing.

With a little thought and planning you can deliver tangible benefits and ongoing savings through LED technology for your warehouse, office and reception areas.

To maintain a competitive advantage against low cost labour competitors, Australian lighting companies have had to become more innovative.

To differentiate from the global “one size fits all”

offering they now provide additional functionality through intelligent lighting controls or smart design features to suit local conditions.

These can include lighting Standards and Australian Building Code compliance for specific areas.

One of the most exciting innovations comes from leading Sydney LED designer and manufacturer enLighten Australia.

enLighten has launched smartsense controls for industrial sites, including loading docks, stores areas, plant rooms and warehouses.

“With smartsense, we have worked on overcoming the two major resistance factors to lighting controls – cost and complexity,” said Steve Cahill, enLighten CEO and head of the R&D team.

“As the manufacturer of the Tauro Blu LED high/low bay light, we have been able to focus on delivering a “stand alone” or non hard wired integrated smartsense controls solution.

“With no additional hard wiring requirements due to the wireless mesh network capability, installation costs are

kept to a minimum, which improves the upgrade project payback analysis.”

“The second feature has been the simplicity of use. For the daylight harvesting module, post commissioning it is a set & forget situation. The daylight sensor will automatically communicate with the light via a wireless signal. This means that there is no exposure to user error or mistakes in programming.”

Customer benefits of smart controls include extended product operating lifetime, additional energy savings of up to 70% during daylight hours & maintenance savings. All of these combine to deliver a lower total cost of ownership through to the end user.

With smartsense, the Tauro Blu luminaire can now produce a variety of light outputs according to the presence of natural daylight by building the intelligence INTO the Tauro Blu light.

How does smartsense work? The smartsense daylight harvesting module is an LED

lighting controls device that automatically adjusts the light output of wireless connected Tauro Blu high/low bay luminaires according to the amount of natural light detected in an area.

The Tauro Blu lights and the smartsense device automatically form a wireless mesh network of up to 200 lights, which transfers dimming commands between the sensor and the lights.

Commissioning is undertaken remotely by an IR controller.

enLighten Australia was awarded National Cleantech Open winner in 2012 by the Commonwealth Government and is a participant of the Lighting Council of Australia Lighting Controls Sub-Industry Group. Recent recognition includes listing among Australia’s Top 10 Hotlist for 2015 by International Lighting Industry publication Lux Review.

Once seen as the front-runner to win the contract, the Japanese bid has since come under scrutiny because of Tokyo’s unwillingness to commit to building any submarines in Australia, where our manufacturing industry continues to battle tough conditions.

Rivals ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) of Germany and France’s state-controlled naval contractor DCNS have both said they would build entirely in Australia, targeting members of the Australian government with the economic and political benefits of their proposals.

A recent briefing by Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems (TKMS) gave a strong commitment to local manufacturing and, I would have to say, from a technical point of view TKMS are well and truly the front runner.

A few of the main points: • TKMS is the most experienced submarine designer/builder • TKMS understands and manages project risks • TKMS successfully builds in the customer’s country • IP protection and transfer is part of TKMS’s standard business model • US combat system can be integrated into a TKMS designed submarine • TKMS is prepared to invest in Australia to replicate its Kiel submarine design and production capability • TKMS has a naval industry supply chain already in Australia • Strong German Government, Navy and Industry commitment for Australia

• TKMS can help rebuild the submarine skills-base in Australia • TKMS can establish an internationally competitive, enduring submarine enterprise in Australia • TKMS Australia as the regional hub for Asia/Pacific naval shipbuilding and repair services business• ANZAC Frigates were successfully delivered by TKMS (Blohm + Voss) and AMECON/Tenix with highest quality, on schedule, for a fixed price

ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems has a strong history with Australia, have been operating here since 1865 and employ 900 around Australia at 11 different sites.

One thing I do like about the TKMS presentation and bid is that they are already an established submarine builder and designer.

If we can apply the lessons learned from the Collins Class contract to an experienced builder committed to local manufacturing we may even be in a position to market Australian built submarines to the rest of the world well into the future.

What continues to amaze me is that the Japanese bid seems to remain a high priority with this Government, despite the fact that every indicator would suggest it would be a poor decision and probably see the end of the Abbott Government at the next election.

The Submarine Contract is the single biggest infrastructure project ever to be undertaken in this country.

It will impact on our manufacturing sector for the next

35 years. Surely the economic benefit of this decision will overshadow the political benefit. Let us hope that wise heads prevail.

Shane Infanti is CEO of the Australian Manufacturing Technology Institute Limited (AMTIL), the peak national body that represents the interests of manufacturing technology suppliers and users within the precision engineering and advanced manufacturing sector.

SINK OR SWIM: AUSTRALIAN SUBMARINE CONTRACT VITAL FOR LOCAL INDUSTRYWILL THE DECISION BE BASED ON ECONOMIC OR POLITICAL BENEFIT?

With the decision still pending on which company will be awarded the $50 billion Australian Submarine Contract, pressure mounts on the Government to determine what will be in the best interests of our manufacturing industry and the economy in general, says SHANE INFANTI …

Traditionally, beam coping has been done manually by marking the dimensions for coping on the workpiece as per the drawings and then manually cutting out the cope from the steel beam using oxy-fuel gas torch.

This method leaves a rough cut requiring considerable chipping and grinding to improve the finish. Coping machines provide high speed and quality, eliminating all the drawbacks of manual coping.

While there are many different machines from well-known overseas manufacturers on the market, Brisbane-based Advanced Robotic Technology (ART) has studied the needs of every steel fabrication shop in Australia, from small to large, in order to develop an automated, versatile machine, giving steel fabricators around the country a competitive edge; not only by creating an efficient automated machine made by ART in Brisbane, but also by offering local service and support.

“We developed the Metaltek XB series to answer the need for fully-automated structural steel processing in one machine,” company Director David White explains. “To eliminate as much manual labour as possible we included full material handling

and all functions are automated and simple to operate. The whole machine is designed to reduce labour and double handling while increasing productivity and profits.”

With a footprint of 3750 x 3600mm, Metaltek XB offers full 4-sided plasma processing for the steel fabrication industry, advanced CNC robotics, high-definition plasma cutting and in-house developed user-friendly software and control interface. Moreover, 3-axis material handling conveyor systems and cross-transfer conveyors for load and unloading eliminates a large percentage of lifting, flipping and moving of steel members between machines. The operator simply prepares the next length of steel for loading while the previous one is cutting. A tick box on the touchscreen lets the controller know that the next length is ready to load.

The drawbridge is able to extend 2.5m into the cutting envelope to support the material, clamp and draw for hitch feeding, and roll out the finished part. The drawbridge feed and synchronised rollers are both servo controlled to ensure highly-precise material feeding. The CNC controller can also automatically feed the next piece of material from the cross-feeds onto the in-feed roller

conveyor for automatic cutting. Inside the cell work area, the machine automatically senses material dimensions, and an extra-articulated robotic arm performs the desired cuts, even underneath the beam. In conjunction with the gantry system, the arm achieves unparalleled reach. Since its introduction in 2013, the ART team set out to add a huge array of extra functionality that would enhance the productivity of the Metaltek XB 1200. Originally designed to cut all four sides of square tube as well as etch marking underneath beams and channels, the machine now comes with the ability to process pipe efficiently up to 610 mm diameter and a wall thickness of up to 32 mm. Full weld preps are easy to perform, as well as any style of holes, notching, slots, mitres, frog mouths, complex branches etc. There is no limit to the length of pipe that can be processed.

Additionally, the XB1200 can automatically load and process plate right alongside other profiles using interchangeable shuttle tables. The plate is loaded onto a pallet style carrier that is queued up on the in-feed conveyor. The plate is then automatically loaded, cut, then unloaded automatically. Different thickness plates can be set up on

multiple pallets. If only a few parts are needed then the plates can be stored on the pallet. New parts can be added to the nest and the plate can be reloaded later to cut a few more posts from the plate remnant.

The Metaltek XB1200 features a Hypertherm HPR260XD plasma power system, which gives precision at unprecedented speed, yet extends consumable life beyond competing plasma systems. Automatic surface tracking along with the ART 3D motion controller ensure accurate pierce and cut heights. The bevel torch head can achieve up to +/-50° on all faces, while ART recommends a maximum cutting bevel of 45°. More information www.metaltekcnc.com

Queensland based Whitelaw Engineering Machinery has released the latest model Scorpio CNC Vertical Automatic Bandsaw from Europe’s leading manufacturer of bandsaws – FMB.

The Scorpio offers a range of unique features through its innovative approach to sawing and material flow.

With a large cutting capacity of 25” x 20” (635 x 510mm) and a vertical tilt head that tilts up to 60º left and right and with a saw head that is on a 3º slant, the FMB Scorpio delivers the fastest cut available in a machine of this type.

“The Scorpio CNC is an exciting development in sawing and material handling allowing the complete optimisation of material,” said Whitelaw Engineering General Manager Dimitri Zouppas. “Due to the encoder measuring system coupled with the automatic feed and mitre during the cutting cycle, the machine is unique in respect to operational speed and minimal material waste,’ he said.

The Scorpio machine comes standard with vertical clamping and can handle multiple types of material such as flat bar, square, rectangular section, tube/pipe,

channel and beams. The large 34mm wide rigid blade

ensures a straight cut and blade life is extended by an efficient mist spray coolant system that also maintains a clean work area.

Cutting capacity of the machine at 0º is 510mm for Round and Square and 635 x 510mm for Rectangular section.

The unlimited material feed uses rollers driven by a brushless motor ensuring optimum efficiency at low revs and a fly encoder roller provides accurate measurement of the material as it feeds. The material is automatically exchanged from the left to the right side of the machine in order to cut the end piece of the material.

Clamping is achieved via a double vice controlled by a hydraulic cylinder with fixed jaws enabling fast easy loading.

Easy operator programming and control is achieved via a 7” colour LCD digital control touch panel with full graphic functions and an auto diagnostic function with display alarms. There are up to 100 different programs with 100 steps for each program with easy software upgrades via

a USB port. The innovative and advanced FMB

SCORPIO offers reduced cycle times as a result of the automated material setup and can perform single cuts in semi-automatic mode.

Whitelaw Engineering Machinery, the

agent for FMB in Australia and NZ for more than 25 years, has a Scorpio machine available in stock for demonstration.

The first ToolDraft software package for creating 2D CAD cutting tool drawings has been launched.

Quick and easy 2D tool drawings will now be able to be created straight from CIM3D or ToolRoom software, ready for your own, or your customer’s requirements.

An independent product to ToolRoom and CIM3D, ToolDraft now produces 2D drawings simply by clicking on the ToolDraft icon in CIM3D (V8.1 onwards). It removes the requirement to export the 3D tool image to an external and non-tool dedicated CAD package.

Once the tool is imported different tool views can be added to the page. Some of these views include side, endface, shank and isometric.

First and third angle projection views can also be added with side and endface views linked. Other features include the ability to add core, cutting and blank profiles to the drawing.

Options include the addition of cross section and detail views. These views can be positioned anywhere on the page. All

tool views can be scaled by page scale or individually. Leader lines, surface finish annotations and center marks can be added to tool views. You can also change the default text and line style properties, and save templates with company title block to suit your company requirements.

When you have positioned the tool views you require, a range of dimensions can be added. Snappable points appear on tool views for easy dimensioning and accuracy. Dimensions can have a prefix, suffix and can be overridden. Unilateral, bilateral and named tolerances can also be added to the dimensions. A library of drafting symbols are available to add to drawings to add to their clarity. When you have developed the tool drawing it can be printed, or exported to pdf or dxf. You are then able to document your tool grinding processes, ensure quality control conformance and provide accurate information to your operator and customer.

• MOTORS AND DRIVES

SEW-EURODRIVE’S new P-X Series industrial gear units were a star attraction at the recent Asia-Pacific International Mining exhibition (AIMEX) in Sydney.

The P-X Series combines the advantages of the planetary gear units and the X Series bevel-helical gear units.

Thanks to the integrated intermediate flange, the P-X range offers compact drives with lower weight and greater stiffness for a torque range between 100 and 500 kNm.

The P-X drives can be used wherever high performance and torque are required in a compact package, for example as drives for bucket-wheel reclaimers, apron feeders, crushers or compact belt drives.

The P-X bevel-helical planetary gear units are available in seven sizes and cover a torque range from 100 to 500 kNm.

The gear ratio range extends from i = 160 to i = 550. The P-X Series is designed for high thermal ratings, as it boasts a shared oil chamber and a thermally optimised housing. It can be used at low temperatures below -25 °C in conjunction with heaters and heating mats.

Both sides of the symmetrical invertible housing construction are fitted with inspection covers. The motor adapters are compatible up to motor size IEC 355 with 500 kW.

On the input end, SEW-EURODRIVE offers the option of various motor adapters with fans, free input shafts and other features. On the output end, standardised output shafts are available as hollow shafts with shrink disks, solid shafts with keys or as smooth models. Installation is possible as

a foot- or flange-mounted design or shaft mounted with a torque arm.

SEW-EURODRIVE also unveiled the X Series Agitator Drive.

Motion Technologies now offers the new compact high performance servo drive CDHD from Servotronix.

The large range of both single phase and three phase drives provides solutions for a broad range of applications.

The CDHD

features a high number of digital I/O and STO (Safe Torque Off) as standard. An EtherCAT module is optional, using CANopen over EtherCAT (CoE) protocol of DS-402 for motion control devices.

The CDHD servo drive has superior performance via the proprietary control algorithms that reduce the following error and the settling time of the load.

For vibrations that occur at high frequencies, Servotronix CDHD drives

rely on standard low pass filters and notch filters. The proprietary vibration suppression function was developed to control vibrations induced by low resonant frequencies, ranging from 5 Hz to 400 Hz. This function is also capable of damping systems in which several distinct resonances occur.

Whenever an automated application employs a suspended load, or ball screws or belt-driven linear slides, or a non-rigid motor-load coupling, it runs the risk of

vibration. With vibration suppression control as a standard feature, CDHD drives can effectively improve the cycle time and performance of machines in applications such as electronics assembly, semiconductors, machine tools and laboratory automation.

Established in 1917, Tsubakimoto Chain Company is a leading manufacturer of power transmission products.

Tsubaki specialises in premium quality industrial drive and conveyor chains and associated power transmission components including cam clutches, reducers and linear actuators.

The Tsubaki name is synonymous with excellence in quality, dependability and customer service.

An intense focus on research and development has resulted in Tsubaki meeting the ever changing needs of the marketplace.

Tsubaki backstop cam clutches are used to prevent reverse rotation of drive shafts, which may cause damage to machinery and expensive equipment.

The inner race can overrun freely in one direction of rotation but reverse rotation is prevented by the automatic engagement of the elliptical cams.

Typical cam clutch applications are in bucket elevators, inclined conveyor systems, large fans and gear boxes.

BR-HT series backstop cam clutches are used in gearboxes for the prevention of reverse rotation of gearbox intermediate or high speed shafts up to

3,600 rpm. BR-HT series provides not only the immediate backstop function under high torque, but also long service life due to the frictionless "Lift-Off" design.

Also, installation on the high speed shaft with lower torque, enables selection of more compact models resulting in lower costs. The BR-HT series is available in sizes up to 320mm bore and 366kNm.

Tsubaki is now locally stocking sizes up to 155mm bore and 27kNm in pilot bore, allowing us to machine the final bore size to the customer’s specification which provides faster delivery times.

The BR-HT series standard mount is fully interchangeable with other brands of clutches.

• PACKAGING & WRAPPING, LABELING

Tailor-made products manufactured in line with a specific customer’s requirements call for a flexible packaging solution.

To meet these market demands, intelligent sensors are becoming one of the main components in many systems.

They play a particularly important role in the Industrial Internet movement.

Major changes in industry affect the foundations of the production process itself;

calling for shorter changeovers, remote production management solutions and packaging systems that can be adapted to product flows, formats, materials and environmental conditions.

As a result, companies can manufacture and package made-to-order products at mass production prices — known as a “batch size of 1.”

The move to the Industrial Internet will result in minimal changeover times and immediate production, which will improve flexibility regarding the type and size of packaging produced.

Sensors are beginning to play a fundamental role in machine automation and the improvement of flexibility. Packaging manufacturers are able to store parameters for special formats, colours, contrasts and surfaces straight to the sensor.

In the event of a product changeover,

they can be automatically activated in a matter of moments and their settings can be replicated in full. The automation system provides the sensor with optimum application-specific parameters, such as the sensing range, hysteresis or threshold.

Sensors make the packaging process more transparent. They record and process values and statuses and then share them at the controller level. Sensors sort, detect, locate, identify and verify. They are able to monitor certain parameters, enabling users to apply an accurate preventive maintenance plan.

Sensors come with their own reliable auto-diagnosis function, meaning that they can be replaced both quickly and easily in the event of malfunction.

SICK’s Smart Sensor Solutions powered by IO-Link provide users with a comprehensive range of communication

functions and are also able to carry out certain functions automatically.

Smart sensors are able to count process events independently. They can measure the time and speed at which objects pass the sensor and monitor values such as revolutions per minute.

The sensors then either transmit the measured values to the control unit as absolute figures or they analyse the data themselves and transmit it in the form of binary information.

• COOLING AND FANS PART ONE

Working in intense heat over long periods can raise normal body temperature and in a worst-case scenario lead to heat stroke and possible death.

Heat stress and fatigue may also impair clear thinking, escalating risk of workplace injury – making errors, slipping or dropping tools. Studies have shown that a cool working environment not only reduces the risk of injury, it increases workplace productivity.

While postponing work or rescheduling tasks to cooler times or other areas is often not possible, employers can take practical steps

to reduce risk. An essential provision is to monitor weather forecasts and plan ahead to ensure adequate safety measures are in place.

According to NSW Workcover, employers should, where possible, install air conditioning or extra ventilation if external cool air can be sourced. Reflective shields should also be placed on radiant heat hotspots. Employers should also insulate hot surfaces and ensure floors are kept dry. Fans can boost airflow speed over workers to improve surface and air heat exchange if the air temperature is less than skin warmth. You can extract hot air or steam using exhaust ventilation.

NSW Workcover suggests calling in experts to assess heat exposure levels and possible solutions in workplaces – especially with high ambient temperatures such as glass factories, foundries or bakeries. Managing the risk of heat-related illness is mandatory under

workplace health and safety laws. The Wet Bulb Globe Temperature index is the standard method for assessing heat stress levels in industry and measures air temperature, radiant heat, humidity and airflow. Risk levels are intensified if, for example, the worker is pregnant or over 65 and in poor physical shape or health, on certain medications or not used to hot working conditions.

Workers deemed high-risk due to pre-existing conditions must undergo a medical examination before commencing work.

Research indicates younger workers can be more susceptible to heat-related injury. Possible reasons may be physically strenuous tasks combined with a lack of skills or experience and a reluctance to flag up problems with supervisors.

Several environmental factors influence risk levels, such as exposure to high temperatures

and humidity, poor airflow and direct sun with no shade or breeze.

To minimize risk Workcover says employers should provide first aid information and train staff about working safely in heat.

Workcover says adequate supervision is crucial, along with ample water for hydration – about 200ml every 20 minutes.

Workers should take regular breaks away from hot processes or the sun, under shade or in cool rooms.

Indoor staff exposed to radiant heat should be supplied with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as reflective aprons and face shields. Outdoor workers require UPF 50+ rated clothing – long-sleeved collared shirts, long pants, wide brim hat – and SPF 30+ sunscreen and sunglasses.Find out more at: workcover.nsw.gov.au and cancercouncil.com.au

When it comes to High Volume Low Speed (HSLV) fans there are several different choices.

Rite-Hite HVLS Revolution fans from Arbon Equipment offer many advantages for cooling large areas.

Because they move more air, it means fewer fans are needed, resulting in significant energy savings. More efficient air movement can save you up to 30 percent in energy costs. Available in diameters from 2.4m to 7.3m and covering over 2000m, Revolution

Fans are ideal for warehouses and distribution centres.

Arbon EquipmentPh: 1800 127 266 (1 ARBON)www.arbon.com.au

A lack of ventilation has been proven to create potential health problems. The Building Code of Australia sets minimum standards for ventilation in workspaces that includes windows, roof lights and artificial air movement to achieve cross ventilation. Specifically – in terms of airflow there is a minimum 5 percent ventilation requirement. This means an open-able window or similar aperture is required to be at least 5 percent of the floor space in that particular area. The area itself may be defined just as one room, or a combined set of adjoining spaces, but in a room where there is no ceiling fan, you must achieve effective cross ventilation to meet the 5 percent requirement.

Failure to comply with these standards could result in “sick building syndrome.”

Studies have shown that people need fresh air and natural light for their health and wellbeing.

“Sick buildings” are created by inefficiencies with air conditioning and ventilation resulting in biofilm growth which may result in eye, nose, throat or skin complaints – with the ultimate exposure being cold and flu strains being circulated through a building’s air systems. In addition to this and equally important is providing a comfortable and consistent work place. Products such as Industrial Evaporative Coolers, High Velocity Low Speed (HVLS) ceiling fans, Wall and

Pedestal fans, Misting Fans and Portable Mancoolers all provide the ability to improve a working environment. Historically there has been a Ventilation focus on exhausting warm air from a work environment however little focus or thought has been applied to the induction of cooler air and the need to increase airflow in general. A combination of the effective exhausting of hot and stale air along with the induction of fresh and cooler air will provide a more suitable and potentially more cost effective result. Fanmaster can provide a range of fixed and portable ventilation solutions specifically targeted towards warehouses, factories, commercial and industrial sites including confined space ventilation and complement that with a range of cool air products servicing the same area. The Fanmaster Ventilation range provides general ventilation, dust/smoke extraction and hazardous extraction while the cooling range introduces cooler air to create a comfortable working environment.

Fanmaster prides itself on being able to successfully assess the situation and provide a solution to match.

The federal government’s new emissions target will require a major effort from industry – particularly trade exposed industries, says the Australian Industry Group.

“The pressing challenge for us all is to develop efficient, effective, durable policies that can deliver these cuts without eroding the competitiveness of our trade exposed industries, said AiGroup chief executive, Innes

Willox.Mr Willox said a cut of 26-28% below

2005 levels by 2020 is comparable to targets announced by Japan and Canada. This would require Australian emissions reductions scaling up to more than 250 million tonnes per annum by 2030, based on recent projections of business as usual growth and the outcome of Renewable Energy Target negotiations.

“The new target is a major step change from anything deliverable by current policies,” he said.

For comparison, if the target were delivered solely through Budget spending it would cost between $100 billion and $250 billion in unadjusted terms.

If the 50 percent 2030 renewable energy

goal recently floated by the Opposition were achieved, it would only deliver around a sixth of the emissions cuts sought.

“The numbers are huge and there is a good chance that even tougher targets will be needed to meet the 2 degrees goal shared by all sides of politics to manage the risks of climate change, Mr Willox said.

“It will be vital to ensure that emissions are reduced at least cost and that trade exposed industries do not suffer an unnecessary loss of competitiveness due to uneven international climate policies. Access to international emissions reduction opportunities is going to be an essential supplement to domestic activity if we are to achieve these goals at a manageable cost.”

Mr Willox said the cost of these targets to industry and households – and their success – depends on policies yet to be developed by either side of politics.

“Those policies have got to operate at the lowest achievable cost if they are to be responsible. They need to be durable if they are to be relied on by investors.”

Ai Group is a member of the Australian Climate Roundtable, which brings together leading business, environment, union, research and social organizations.

Mr Willox said climate policies will only be effective if they outlive the governments that introduce them.

“Moving beyond partisanship is hard but necessary if any emissions target is to be met.”

Gorman-Rupp Super T Series Pumps now available with:

Gorman-Rupp, a world leader in solids handling self priming centrifugal pumps, has released the most advanced system for handling solids laden liquids, according to Australian distributors, Hydro Innovations.

Known as the Eradicator Solids management System, the technology is said to be ideal for the new challenges for solids handling pumps. This includes stringy solids like wet wipes, which are increasingly present in sewage, and feathers in poultry process.

The new system comes as an option on

the Gorman-Rupp range of Super T series pumps, and is also available as a retrofit kit on existing Super T Series pumps already in the field.

The Eradicator system features an aggressive self-cleaning wear-plate incorporating a number of notches and grooves, as well as a patent pending lacerating tooth that helps break up stringy materials, scrape them off the impeller vanes and pass them through the pump – all without impacting performance or interrupting service. A special cover

plate with the system includes a patented lightweight inspection cover that can easily be removed if necessary to inspect pump internals.

System benefits include improved operational efficiency, increased uptime, reduced maintenance costs, lower life cycle costs and easier access to the impeller.

Eradicator-equipped pumps do not require expensive chopper blades that need periodic replacement, but rely on passing large solids and stringy materials straight through the pump. The system is available

with carbon steel or hardened alloy steel wear plates.

According to Australian Made Campaign Chief Executive, Ian Harrison, the average number of businesses registering to use the Australian Made, Australian Grown logo each month has almost doubled over the past year.

The not-for-profit Australian Made Campaign administers and promotes the iconic green-and-gold kangaroo, which has been used by producers and manufacturers to promote their products as genuinely Australian for nearly three decades.

“Our research shows country-of-origin is a key factor in product purchase decisions, particularly for food, and consumers are looking for goods made and grown in Australia, so it’s no surprise that businesses are keen to capitalise on country-of-origin branding,” Mr Harrison said.

“The Australian Made, Australian Grown logo is the only registered country-of-origin certification trade mark for all classes of Australian goods – as well as third party accreditation it is a powerful selling tool.”

Mr Harrison said the sharp rise in use of the logo could be largely attributed to increasing

awareness of the benefits of locally made and grown goods, and the impact buying locally has on the economy, community and environment.

“Consumers might buy Aussie out of a sense of responsibility, but at the end of the day, products made and grown here are often better quality and value, and that keeps consumers coming back for more,” Mr Harrison said.

Mr Harrison says the lower Australian dollar is also helping.

“Our reputation for producing products and produce to high quality and safety standards is driving sales in Australia, but we’re also seeing

a huge impact overseas – opportunities for exporters are booming,” Mr Harrison said.

“It is fantastic that after almost 30 years, the Australian Made, Australian Grown logo is still delivering significant competitive advantages for Aussie fishermen, producers and manufacturers.”

Utilising the latest technology in precision shaped grains, the 3M™ Cubitron™ II File Belt assists with removing spot welds without drilling and helps you grind in hard to reach areas.

Cubitron II helps you save on materials while experience a longer lasting and faster cut.

3M has found that most operators stop using a belt when its performance drops to 2/3 of its initial cut rate.

As the graph shows, 3M™ Cubitron™

II Belts take twice as long to reach that replacement end point as conventional ceramic abrasive belts. So you can get significantly more work done per belt.

With decades of experience in ceramic, abrasive and microreplication technologies, 3M has literally reinvented abrasives with 3M™ Cubitron™ II Products.

Starting with a patented, precision-shaped ceramic abrasive grain, 3M engineers found a way to electrostatically orient each triangular structure to

maximise cutting potential. The result: Each individual

precision-shaped ceramic grain acts like a cutting tool, slicing through metal like a knife, and continuously self-sharpens as points break off.

This allows 3M Cubitron II Belts and Discs to run cooler and keep on working — long after conventional abrasives have dulled, shelled, glazed over and been tossed out.

Providing high-end features specifically for industrial protocols, the Red Lion SN/RAM range of 3G/4G modems are built tough to withstand any industrial environment.

Web accessibility demands the highest security level, and is typically managed

through 3rd parties via VPN connections as a monthly fee.

By offering self managed VPN capabilities, Red Lion remove any need for 3rd parties.

Data encryption, stateful firewall configuration and other comprehensive router features are easily accessed and included.

With a robust Din Mount metal enclosure and the option of POE power if required, the series can operate in extreme temperatures of -30° to +75°C

environments. The series has the option of 1 or 5

Ethernet ports including 3G/4G connectivity and accommodates industrial protocols such as Modbus/DNP3 pass through.

In the event of the 3G/4G network failing, the RAM series will store critical site data via DNP3 registers until the cellular network is restored, repopulating the missing data back into SCADA thereby ensuring your data’s integrity is at the highest level.

Red Lion modems are ideal for deployment in industrial M2M networks

such as water/wastewater, transportation, energy utilities, logistics, manufacturing, mining and energy management.

TURCK’s new compact Ethernet multiprotocol I/O modules make standard switching signals quickly and effectively bus-capable.

Thanks to their multiprotocol plug-and-play functionality, the FEN20 devices with digital inputs and outputs are immediately ready for use in PROFINET, Modbus TCP or EtherNet/IP™ systems.

The device detects the protocol used by listening to the communication traffic during the startup phase.

The FEN20 devices are available in two different designs. The small

4DIP-4DXP, which measures as just 55x62.5x30mm, fits in small control boxes, control panels or other existing housings and can also be retrofitted to make push buttons and LED indicators quickly Ethernet ready.

The large 16DXP variant, which measures 57x152x47 mm, is designed for the same type of application and provides up to 16 I/Os. As a DXP variant it can be operated both as an input or output. The module also provides the division of the I/O-signals into three independent potential groups which are isolated from each other – which can be

used for safety shutdowns – and can be centrally controlled.

Both devices are equipped with an integrated web server to display diagnostic information and provide access to configuration parameters.

The web page was created to offer a responsive design so that even a smartphone can be used for simple diagnostics.

Omron’s FH series vision sensor delivers high-speed performance, true colour technology base on RGB 16.7 million colour to deliver a reliable inspection and accuracy to improve productivity in a broad range of industry applications.

The FH vision sensor is now available with a new High Resolution Touch Panel Monitor FH-TPM for quality inspection, traceability and contamination inspection.

Mr George Nematian, Omron’s Vision Sensor Product Manager, says the new FH series vision sensor is faster, more efficient and has more features than ever before.

The key features of FH are super high speed image input with 300 FPS (3.3ms), high speed controller with parallel processing using 2 CPU/4 cores, high speed communication by using Ethercat, One software for easy

setup with Omron NJ and Omron Robots, servo and safety.

“The FH series offers outstanding return on investment (ROI) and greater customer satisfaction,” Mr Nematian says.

“It can be used in any application where visual inspections are required.”

Mr Nematian says the system is widely used in various industries including:• Machine tools• Robotics• Rubber and plastics• Conveyors and automated warehouses• Food & beverage• Packaging• Pharmaceutical• Automotive• Metals

The FH has been used in many applications like missing expire date detections, Optical character recognition (OCR), Label or position of label detection, cap inspection, Liquid level measurement, damaged bottle detection, missing parts/ part recognitions, positioning, measurement and quality inspections of metal sheets.

With an IP65 rating, the FH vision sensor is dust proof and water resistant, making it ideal for hygiene-sensitive food and beverage environments.

The FH vision sensor conducts highly accurate cap

inspections to ensure the correct product is processed. It can also be used for traceability to monitor date and time codes as well as for contamination inspection to ensure no contamination has occurred.

The new 12 MPixels (4000x3000pixels) high resolution camera has been released with FH series to ensure higher quality, accuracy and works at high speed with 38.9 frame per second (25.7ms).

Most standard vision sensors are unable to handle parallel processing, which creates unnecessary waiting time. If the machine cycle time cannot be increased, a Controller must be added for each process to perform parallel processing, increasing costs.

With the FH series, four controllers are compressed into one without increasing the line cycle time. You can greatly reduce costs for processes that involve many lines.

Also, the FH Controllers contain special setup displays for the stages and robots that are commonly used on FA sites. You just fill in the settings to easily output axis travel amounts for stages and robots.

Omron’s innovative Sysmac Studio automation software supports the FH series, allowing multiple devices to be integrated easily by using EtherCAT connectivity.

Contact the team at Omron to demonstrate how the new vision sensors can improve your production lines.

Award winning on-line book retailer Booktopia is by any standard one of Australia’s success stories. Starting as a quiet achieving private company in 2004, it has grown from a modest $10 per day “family side project” to a staggering annual turnover in excess of $70 million in only 11 years.

Coming to grips with an annual growth rate of 30 percent is a problem most companies can only dream of in today’s industrial environment, however, the challenges of coping with this level of growth, from a logistical perspective, is never the less quite a formidable undertaking. By putting together a project team that included, warehouse systems design company DCL, Sydney based specialist materials handling systems manufacturer, Adept Conveyor Technologies and Spectrum Automation, Booktopia was able to orchestrate a seamless transition from essentially a manual system of order picking into a facility that considerably boosted production and accommodated the growth levels now being experienced.

Since moving into to a new 10,000 square metre facility in Lidcombe NSW last year, $4 million dollars has been invested in phase one of a new system installation to improve efficient

throughput by enhanced mechanisation of the process.

This new installation has taken the order picking throughput from 8,000 units per day, before Christmas 2014, to a new automated facility which now handles 16,000 units per day. As you walk around the new facility you become aware of how much is being achieved and how streamlined and well managed the operation is, particularly when you take into account the level of activity that has taken place in recent months.

The nerve centre of the whole operation is a bespoke warehouse management system (WMS) designed by Booktopia and integrated with the logical functionality that drives the whole system. Leading Australian materials handling company ,Adept Conveyor Technologies Pty Ltd, were chosen as the approved manufacturer tasked with the responsibility to install the automated system and a network of conveyors consisting of gravity, belt, high velocity line shaft rollers and energy efficient 24VDC pulse conveyors which are programmed to stop if no tote traffic is detected. Collectively this installation facilitates the constant flow of tote boxes to and from the pre-designated picking and packing zones. An

additional $3 million dollar Phase 2 installation is already under consideration which is planned to accommodate anticipated future expansion and to become operational in 2016.

This structure will incorporate a second level 1,000 square metre mezzanine floor which will be bolted onto the existing system and serviced by integrated floor to floor inclined conveyors.

“Our responsibilities are not over once the conveyor installation is fully commissioned,” says Adept’s General Manager Jim Tzitziris.Regular servicing and spare parts availability for maintenance of the system, if needed, will ensure down time is avoided when more demands are placed on the system over time.”

The warehouse floor area is segregated into zones with 50 % of the stock in 9 metre racks and 50 % in low level racking. Red, green and blue plastic tote boxes are utilised to represent specific traffic zones by transporting books to their designated locations directed by bar code scanners strategically located on the conveyor system. Three hundred units are picked per hour from the high rise racks utilising a scan reader gun. Three Crown wire guided order pickers fitted with one of ten Adept designed and manufactured steel “Cluster Pickers” which

incorporates 15 tote box cells and a platform from which the operator can fill from the high rise racking. Used cartons are managed by an overhead conveyor that transports the cardboard out of the warehouse, through a chute directly into a large recycling compactor skip. According to Booktopia’s Chief Operating Officer Phillip Haddad, the whole undertaking was carried out without holding up the normal day to day operations.

Booktopia expects a ROI within 3 years and has now reached a stage where two-thirds of the original staff is able to run a system, which produces an additional 50 % throughput of units per day. What the future holds for Booktopia is anybody’s guess but the way things are shaping up it is clear their success is well deserved and that there is a lesson to be learnt for all at a time where industry is somewhat apprehensive about capital investment in new systems.

One of Australia’s leading food brands believed that their compressed air efficiency and leakage maintenance was well in control.

To validate their confidence the company commissioned Southern Cross Compressors to carry out an air audit on the complete system. The results from that audit presented eye-opening surprises.

Using their UE Ultraprobe 9000 leak detector, Southern Cross were able to pinpoint in excess of 50 significant leaks with a total air volume well over 10m3/min representing an annualised wasted energy cost of approximately $55.000.

Put in perspective, the case used as a model here shows that their first $250,000 worth of sales each year merely paid for wasted compressed air.

The audit was conducted over two full days costing the company around $3000 including preparation of a comprehensive 50 page report representing one leak per page.

The UE Ultraprobe 9000 detects and records the decibels at the natural frequency of the air leak. It can accurately detect leaks up to 10m away from the probe allowing Southern Cross technicians to find otherwise undetectable leaks in the main reticulation system. Whilst most leaks were simple to repair, they would not have been found without this advanced detection device and method.

Using a calibrated chart, the detected sound level (dB(A)) then converted to a volume flow rate (m3/min) which in turn is converted to power (kW) to calculate

annualised costs determined on running hours and electrical supply costs. All leaks are individually tagged using colour codes based on severity and then photographed for the customer report. The 50 page report presented to the customer included highly critical date including individual leak volume, equivalent power, annualised cost, equivalent CO2 emissions as well as a photo of the colour tagged leak. The report also provides the customer with a comprehensive summary of the potential savings opportunity enabling them to prioritise the leak repairs based on severity, energy loss and repair costs and make a totally informed decision.

In today’s efficiency driven age where energy costs are fundamental to business sustainability, this type of audit and report

service can lead to significant cost savings. For such a relatively low cost of the air

audit, potential returns far outweigh expense. A Southern Cross Compressed Air Audit can lead to greatly reduced energy costs and a much improved bottom line.

Motorized quarter turn actuators are used, amongst other things, to actuate butterfly valves and ball valves.

They can perform simple open/close movements and, depending on the version, also carry out control tasks. The GEMÜ 9428 and GEMÜ 9468 series have already been established for some time now and boast a robust and reliable design. The special feature of these actuators, in addition to a solid and low-wear design, is the way in which power is transmitted to the shaft of the respective valve. More specifically, this means that the torque in the end positions with a constant motor load increases and the speed at a constant motor speed decreases simultaneously. This special design feature brings the nominal torque of the actuator into line with the closing characteristic curve of a quarter turn valve. This not only achieves a constant load on the electric motor being used by avoiding peak loads, it also improves controllability. The new version of the GEMÜ 9428 actuator with a nominal torque of 55 Nm completes the two series. With this extension to the portfolio, we now offer a comprehensive product range with nominal torques from 6 Nm up to 400 Nm. Depending on the version, travel

times of between 4 and 29 seconds can be implemented. The actuators feature an optical position indicator as standard, as well as a manual override. The end positions of the quarter turn valve can be adjusted via a microswitch. In addition to an emergency power supply, there is also an option to activate different signalling devices using two potential-free limit switches. A control module can also be integrated.

The GEMÜ 9428 and 9468 motorized quarter turn actuators feature a compact design and can be used not only for GEMÜ butterfly valves and ball valves, but for all valves with a travel range of 90° and a standard flange in accordance with EN ISO 5211. The motor and gearbox are housed in a weather-resistant plastic housing. Both quarter turn actuators are designed for DC and AC operating voltages and can be supplied with different electrical connection options depending on the applications.

AIRSKATE Modules now range from 200mm diameter (only 20 mm high) of 175kg capacity to a range of fully fabricated Modules from 300, 450, 500 to 550 mm nominal diameter. These can be used in sets of 3, 4 or up to 8 Modules with unit capacities from 1 to 8 tonne each Module.

This means a lightweight set of 4 x 300 mm diameter x 65 mm high can lift and move equipment or machinery weighing four tones.

And a larger set of 4 x 450 mm diameter x 65mm high can lift and move 10 tonne with safety and little effort on a horizontal surface.

The AIRSKATE system has been used for standard and often challenging moves across a vast range of industries including food and beverage, heavy manufacturing, medical, health and electronics.

Energy savings … the nurses station at Westmead Hospital

With the HighTorque Chuck (HTC) with narrow contour, MAPAL has succeeded in combining the benefits of the hydraulic expansion technology with the 3° back taper known from the shrink chuck.

This is made possible by the additive manufacturing process employed at MAPAL in the form of selective laser melting (SLM). SLM is a powder bed-based process. Loose metal powder is melted layer by layer onto the areas where material is required by means of a laser beam. The part is built up from bottom to top.

During the production of the hybrid HTC with narrow contour, the functional area is applied to the conventionally manufactured tool body by SLM. Thanks to the additive manufacturing, the clamping range can be positioned very close to the chuck tip, which would not have been possible with conventional manufacturing.

This provides an optimum radial run-out of < 3 ―m at the location bore and < 5 ―m at 2.5 x diameter, as well as high shape accuracy with good vibration damping.

The damping in the system reduces

microstructure cracking at the cutting edge. That in turn ensures longer tool life and less strain on the machine spindle.

Further, the additive manufacturing eliminates the need for the soldered joint that has always been a limiting factor until now.

The HTC with narrow contour has all the benefits of the proven MAPAL HTC (HighTorque Chuck) technology, whereby the "T" stands not only for high torque transmission, but also for thermal stability. The wide operating temperature range up to 170°C ensures additional process reliability. The balancing quality is G=2.5 at 25,000 revolutions per minute.

The new chuck offers significant benefits not only for mould making, but also for applications in the automotive and aerospace sector. Why? The HTC with narrow contour is suitable for all machining operations in contour-critical areas. It allows quick and simple clamping of the tool. That means: Neither training courses nor high retooling costs or expensive peripherals are required for implementation.

The HTC with narrow contour is

available in the clamping diameters of 6, 8, 10 and 12 millimetres for HSK-A63 and SK-40. Intermediate sleeves enable additional diameter ranges to be covered. In addition, the chuck is optionally available with dynamically balanced HSK. That again is something new: For the first time is has become possible to dynamically balance components with

HSK connection, because the mass imbalance that has been caused by the different depths of the key block slots until now has been eliminated in the optimised HSK.

Global Pumps is now the proud distributer of Verder’s new screw centrifugal pumps.

These are a combination of both centrifugal pumps and positive displacement screw pumps. A screw shaped impeller gently moves the product into the pump’s chamber, effecting highly efficient transfer to the discharge port.

A large, open impeller design is perfect for high solid content product, while the screw shape of the design is ideal for both liquids containing high-solid content or highly viscous liquids. Due to its design, Verder’s screw centrifugal pumps excel at pumping long fibres in suspension, resulting in fewer clogs and downtime from blockage removal.

Reduced time within the pump translates into a low shear action, reducing damage to sensitive polymers or liquids sensitive to flocculation.

Its non-pulsating pumping action reduces foaming and emulsification. Additionally, wear from abrasive liquids is reduced, making this pump popular as a solution to pump sludge and slurry in mining operations, energy production plants, the food and beverage industry, paper and pulp sector, or waste water treatment.

The new design ensures high flow, low NPSH pump, lowering energy costs. For example, the low NPSH significantly reduces pump damage due to cavitation.

The screw centrifugal pump comes in a wide variety of configurations including Close and long coupled versions, or vertical pumps and fully submersible models to suit your requirements.

Dematic has launched a new high-density storage solution for warehouse operations – Colby Push-Back Pallet Racking.

Colby Push-Back Pallet Racking provides high-density storage where pallets are stored up to six pallets deep.

Using a forklift, pallets are pushed back on carts on inclined rails mounted inside the racking. As a pallet is withdrawn, the

cart holding a pallet behind automatically slides forward to the front position.

Push-Back Pallet Racking is a great alternative to double-deep or drive-in racking because it makes great use of space, while still allowing fast and easy access to stock. The system operates on a First In Last Out (FILO) basis.

Colby’s new racking is ideal for bulk storage, order consolidation, and despatch. Dematic’s structural engineers have designed the system with safety, integrity, and reliability in mind. All carts are of rigid frame construction and run on large wheel bearings for smooth performance. The rails enclose the wheels,

preventing any dislodgement of the carts and keeping the running surface free of debris. Stopper plates locate the pallets securely on all carts.

“We understand that safety and optimal equipment lifespan is a key focus for warehouse operators and that’s why we are committed to developing the best products possible,” said Tony Woodlock, Director Storage Equipment, Dematic.

Colby’s Push-Back Pallet Racking includes all the superior features of Colby’s selective racking: the diamond-slot profile, which provides a stronger and more efficient interlock between upright and beam, front and rear upright protectors to

avoid damage and rack end protection for worker safety.

Colby Storage Solutions combine the flexibility of a national network of independent distributors, with the resources of global materials handling leader Dematic.

Dematic manufactures Colby storage equipment in Australia, to the highest possible standards – and at a competitive price.

Tennant has unveiled its new T300 Walk-behind Scrubber, the first scrubber of its kind equipped with Tennant’s next generation ec-H2O NanoCleanTM technology.

The T300 is loaded with innovative new features that deliver reliable, high performance results at a lower cost to clean. This compact, easy to use, versatile machine provides unsurpassed cleaning performance on virtually any hard floor surface. The T300 addresses key cleaning challenges for facility managers. It delivers outstanding scrubbing results to enhance a facility’s image, whilst improving health and safety – and minimising

maintenance costs. The T300 is Tennant’s most versatile

machine to date, available with multiple configurations to optimise cleaning performance on most hard floor surfaces from smooth, polished concrete to grouted floors and stone. Configuration options include single disk, orbital, dual disk and new to Tennant’s walk-behind scrubber range, dual cylindrical.

Tennant’s new dual cylindrical configuration reduces the need for pre-sweeping floors, and provides exceptional results on uneven surfaces.

The T300 is also equipped with the Insta-ClickTM magnetic head, which allows operators to change brushes and pads easily, safely and quickly, as well as Tennant’s patented parabolic squeegee for outstanding water recovery in a single pass. The T300 features a new optional Pro-PanelTM LCD touchscreen interface that provides simplified

operation with easy to understand graphics and video tutorials. The touchscreen also allows for programmable Zone SettingsTM, to set specific machine settings for different locations and floor types, taking the guess work out of the cleaning process to ensure consistent results. The

Pro-PanelTM also features on-demand video tutorials on machine operation and maintenance.

This helps minimise operator training and improves operator confidence in using the machine for increased uptime.

“Tennant is continually innovating to improve our customer’s cleaning operations with high performance sustainable technologies. It’s our commitment to drive innovation in both cleaning technology and cleaning process to help our customers clean more places, clean better, and clean for less,” said Dave Huml, Tennant Company Senior Vice President of Marketing.

The T300 is Tennant’s first scrubber equipped with ec-H2O NanoClean. Like the original ec-H2OTM technology, ec-H2O NanoClean electrically converts water into an innovative cleaning solution with the same great benefits and now cleans better, cleans more soils and is effective in more applications. The converted water is created by an onboard e-cell that generates millions of microscopic bubbles – nanobubbles – per millilitre of solution. These nanobubbles then promote the cleaning efficacy of the solution.

ec-H2O NanoClean effectively removes typical daily soils as well as more stubborn soils like food greases, without leaving chemical residue. This improves floor traction and increases safety within the facility. Contact Tennant for an onsite demonstration.

More than 13,000 meals were served as part of OzHarvest's Think.Eat.Save food waste awareness day in July.

The Australian food charity's campaign aims to highlight and raise public awareness of how much food is thrown away each year.

OzHarvest is one of the charities supported by Olympus Australia and staff

from the company's offices around Australia volunteered to help at this year's event, which was simultaneously held in eight cities and two regional centres across the country.

OzHarvest uses donated and surplus food from retailers and restaurants, and invites the public to enjoy a free and delicious hot meal made from the rescued produce while

learning about food waste from some of the nation’s top chefs, politicians and celebrities.

“Olympus Australia has made a commitment to OzHarvest which allows us to direct resources to them so that our impact is more significant,” said Oliver Clarke, Communications Manager for Olympus Australia. “Our view is that we are partnered with them for the long term which makes the most effective use of the company and staff's support for activities in the wider community.”

Think.Eat.Save was launched in July with tri-partisan support at Parliament House in Canberra and the free meals were provided at venues in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, the Gold Coast, Port

Macquarie and the Sapphire Coast. High profile volunteers, such as chefs Neil

Perry and Jost Bakker, assisted at functions to take a stance against food waste. Olympus staff helped serve the soup and desserts to lunchtime visitors in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. The Olympus volunteers also helped set up the serving tents and clean up at the end of the day.

Founder and CEO of OzHarvest, Ronni Kahn said: "Think.Eat.Save 2015 continues to highlight the disturbing amount of food wasted in Australia and around the world. Of the more than one billion tonnes of food produced for human consumption, approximately one third is wasted."
