An examination of what are the respective requirements of machinery manufacturers, machine users and end customers, reveals a clear trend. The

focus is on maximum machine reliability, availability and also cost reduction at the same while securing investment to some degree by the use of future-oriented technologies. Machine and system manufacturers increasingly strive for cost and space reductions and implementation simplicity, with no compromises on performance. With its Single Cable Solution, Hengstler has provided a fitting response to the needs of the market.

From the machine manufacturer's point of view, maximum machine reliability and availability is absolutely mandatory and a real competitive advantage. Safety has to be primordial when considering the aspects of man/machine interaction, but not at the price of having to stop the machine. The single cable solution with its ACURO®link interface is designed to ensure a high level of functional safety in servo motor control systems. The data protocol of the electrical interface meets the requirements of SIL3 according to IEC 61508 and Cat. 3

PLe EN_IOS 13849, while the ACURO®AD37 encoder itself, and the IP core in the control, can meet all requirements from non-SIL to SIL3 depending on the application scenario. Because of the safety function that can be implemented in the drive, the machine can keep running thanks to the single cable solution, even if someone is directly in the potentially hazardous zone. A mandatory prerequisite to enable maximum machine reliability and availability.

Safety however is only one part of the equation of safety, efficiency and performance. An operating temperature of up to +115°C, an operating speed of up to 12,000 rpm and a low mounting depth of 28mm make the AD37 the most compact absolute multi-turn encoder in its class. In the SIL3 configuration, the high performance encoder known as AD37E sets new standards. Its extra efficiency and performance give a decisive competitive advantage to the drive system. The AD37 series make this possible with its high accuracy and resolution. An “electronic datasheet” in the encoder stores specific encoder data, which can be read out at any time. In the encoder itself, the motor and

drive data are stored in an internal OEM memory. This is primarily of interest for end users, but also for machine manufacturers. Using this data, solutions for preventive maintenance, minimum down-time and significantly increased productivity can be implemented. The electronic product identification provides motor characteristics, its product code and serial number which make it possible to adjust automatically to each motor’s parameters. Diagnostic and monitoring functions provide important information on the operating status of the machine. This is a significant contribution to implementing Industry 4.0 scenarios and translates into security of investment for the customers who buy the machines, because the Single Sable Solution fulfils all the requirements for supporting future technologies in the best way.

Particularly in today's market, motor manufacturers are focussing on designing motors that are smaller than ever before and with higher performance. Energy, space and resource savings are given the highest priority. By enabling motor output and motor feedback signals to pass through a single cable, efficiency is significantly increased. Especially in large systems, the gain in space becomes notable and considerable weight is saved in the motors. There are other important advantages that are gained from faster installation and lower cost of material for system cabling.

With the Single Cable Solution, Hengstler offers a well-balanced overall concept and a product portfolio that

continues to be expanded now and in the future. Customers are convinced that the digital approach with a true Single Cable Solution is the right choice. The advantages in terms of investment security, cost and performance are evident.

Smart Wiring Application: the name reveals what’s behind the new software – greatly simplifying the entire control cabinet wiring process. Eplan

is presenting this new solution at the Hannover Messe. Whether it’s the source/target description, terminal point handling, cross sections, colour, wire length, end procedures or exact cable routing: the software provides a visualisation and the necessary wiring information and engineering data for mounting assembly within the control cabinet.

The advantage: the schematic-based wiring – a time-consuming, error-prone process requiring a great deal of know-how – is no longer required. The Smart Wiring Application’s digital representation refers to the virtual model’s 3D-layout in Eplan Pro Panel. Yet the new application can be utilised to enhance productivity even without a 3D-layout.

As an example, Excel lists with all the required connection information can be read into the program; the 3D visualisation of the routing pathways and assembly steps cannot be provided – however, the step-by-step execution as well as the comparison of various connection lists for last-minute changes remain available. Workers have clear information at all times about how far along the wiring process is as a whole, what still remains to be wired, which potentially necessary changes they must make and how to make them. The Smart Wiring Application will be available with the release of Eplan Platform 2.6 in September 2016.

System-guided applicationA clearly designed menu describes every single connec-tion. This information is augmented with the equipment visualisation, including terminal points and the planned cable routing for the wires within the control cabinet. The software further provides information about the required wire diameter, the colour to be used and the defined

Smart Wiring Application: The Smart Wiring Application provides step-by-step instructions for the panel shop based on engineering data.

Wiring a control cabinet requires a lot of time and expertise, however Eplan is making the process much easier: the Smart Wiring Application will be presented at the Hannover Messe. The software visualises the wiring and provides the necessary production data 100 per cent digitally. The ad-vantage: knowledge of the control technology is plugged into the system in the future. Users benefit from substantial timesavings for last-minute changes because the software also handles the often complex task of project comparison.

terminal point handling – crimped or ultrasonic welding, for instance. Bundle affiliation is also exactly shown, which, taken together, means that every connection as well as every working step are clearly understandable and transparent. As soon as a connection is completely wired, it’s shown in traffic-light-principle green. This is tremendously helpful if several shifts are necessary to complete the work: colleagues can start wiring exactly where their predecessors left off.

Fast process for last-minute changesThe Smart Wiring Application really demonstrates its strength with last-minute changes to the project, which are simply registered in Eplan Pro Panel and then updated. Through the Smart Wiring Application, the two project statuses are compared to one another and the software documents all the differences, saving enormous amounts of time as compared to doing this manually. The software shows all the obsolete connections, those which have already been wired but must be removed, and which additional connections are required. This means that the times when wirers had to search and think about how the changes affect the entire wiring and manufactur-ing process have come to an end.

BackgroundUp to 43 per cent of the working time required to manufacture a control cabinet is consumed by the wiring (depending on its specific application). This process

is extremely time-consuming and requires enormous specialist knowledge. What must be connected by wire, , and how can the required wires be optimally routed? These control-technology questions usually must be answered by using the schematics, which provide the basis for the cabinet’s wiring. As a result, highly qualified specialists pore over hundred of circuit diagrams and, page for page, work through the wiring for assembly and installation, the realisation of which may not always be unambiguous in every case. The Smart Wiring Applica-tion means that the time saved can be used more productively.

Advantages of the Smart Wiring Application

• Integrated workflow from customer requirements through engineering to manufacturing and testing

• 100% digital data• Wiring without schematics• Perfect visualisation• Step-for-step directions for the worker • Project comparison for last-minute changes• Logging of wiring status• Better scalability of workloads

A quick and easy way to realize IIoT The basic prerequisite for Industrial IoT is that industrial applications are able to communicate with IT systems. However, the operational technology (OT) on the factory floor uses fieldbus and industrial Ethernet networks, which are designed for real-time communication – by default separated from the IT-infrastructure. The Anybus .NET gateways address this situation by acting as translators which send and receive data between PROFIBUS- or PROFINET-networks and IT platforms using .NET as a framework. The communication is set up in a couple of minutes and the .NET gateways are therefore a very fast way to realize IIoT.

The result is that IT systems get unprecedented access to real-time data from the factory floor which enables predictive maintenance, KPI-follow-up, machine analytics, data mining, big data processing, production statistics and much more – without interfering with the industrial processes.

The solution can be used for a wide range of use cases, from simple transfer of KPI values, advanced messages with structured data types, or ultra-fast transfer of I/O data for “big data.”

How it worksIn addition to connecting the data from the industrial processes to the IT-systems, the .NET gateways make the data understandable on the IT-side. The information exchange between the Operational Technology (OT) side and the Information Technology (IT) side is defined in a spreadsheet template which defines how the data is mapped, tagged and presented to IT-applications. The

HMS Industrial Networks now introduces yet another gateway family for the Industrial Internet of Things. The new Anybus .NET gateways enable real-time data from industrial machinery to be presented to .NET-based IT applications. This means that .NET programmers can get data directly from a PLC system on the other side of “the edge” to be used in applications for statistics, analysis or maintenance. The first .NET gateways are available for PROFIBUS and PROFINET.

spreadsheet is uploaded to the HMS code generator which automatically creates a customized high level C# API (events and Post methods) that is easy to integrate directly into a .NET application. It also generates a customized GSDML file for the PLC.

Easy for both .NET and PLC programmers“The Anybus .NET gateways represent a very fast and easy way to realize the Industrial Internet of Things,” says Markus Bladh, Product Manager at HMS Industrial Networks. “For more than 20 years, HMS has been offering industrial communication solutions between different standards on the factory floor, and we now use this experience to offer a gateway to .NET. This is truly an ‘edge gateway’ in the sense that it creates a bridge between the IT and OT side – .NET programmers get access to data from industrial machinery, while PLC programmers can rest assured that the data access does not interfere with their critical systems.”

The fruit of Hengstler’s research has seen the company introduce its SPC (Self-Powered Counter) to the global market. Simple, innovative and cost effective, SPC

comes with ATEX certification and offers class-leading shock and vibration resistance.

Measuring the rate or volume of gas/fluid flow is obviously essential for utility companies to determine how much gas or water has been consumed by commercial customers and thus determine billing information. Here, utilities turn to the expertise of flow meter suppliers, which in turn rely on accurate providers of counter technologies.

However, where conventional electronics or other circuitry is provided for performing various functions related to gas/fluid measurement, a power supply is required. In some applications, an independent power source may be readily available, but this isn’t always the case, particularly in areas where gas pipelines cross huge expanses of remote terrain, for example. In such locations, a power supply is often impractical or too costly to install. Mains-powered devices

also struggle in locations subject to frequent power cuts, or unregulated voltage. The alternative, battery-operated devices, only offer a limited solution due to limitations such as battery life, cost and reliability in harsh environments. Furthermore, in contrast with devices that have stopped due to battery failure or battery removal, the SPC continues counting.

With this in mind, Hengstler developed a fluid meter capable of performing precise and reliable gas/fluid measurements, while also providing the power necessary for those measurements. The compact (38mm diameter housing) SPC makes use of ‘pulse wire’ technology whereby kinetic energy is generated by a moving fluid to provide electrical pulses – the first counter of its type to offer this advantage.

This innovative, self-powering feature also ensures that the meter can be replaced at any time without any loss of metering data, thanks to an in-built memory. The metering value will be displayed automatically when the new register is attached, thus allowing for continuous billing. This is the

The new SPC fluid meter counter from Hengstler is not only self-powered, but is resistant to fraudulent tampering.

When Hengstler set about developing a new counter for commercial gas and water metering applications, the company had two main objectives: to make it self-powered to overcome the limitations of both power supply availability and battery-operated devices; and to make it resistant to tampering using magnets that interfere with the mechanical meter register found in conventional counters.

only likely maintenance task as the Hengstler SPC features only one moving part, the shaft, thus offering near-zero wear and saving on both costs and downtime.

From an anti-fraud perspective, the device makes use of a non-volatile FRAM memory and strong shielding magnets to prevent fraudsters from evading what they owe. In addition, meter volumes can be compared and alarmed at set intervals.

Importantly, each SPC can be configured according to customer communication protocol preferences, including, NAMUR, UART, M BUS, I²C or wireless, for example. Further advantages include ATEX certification, 300g shock resistance, 20g vibration resistance, IP20 protection rating, easy and fast installation, and suitability for all gas/fluid types.

Ultimately, the new Hengstler SPC provides the freedom of counting whenever, wherever and whatever, without external power.
