We do not take for granted the faith that you have put in us to get you to your destinations timeously and safely. “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together”, an African proverb, is therefore an applicable mantra for us here at SA Express.

My team and I understand that in order for you, our customers, to feel like our most valued investors, we have to function with Swiss-like precision at every touch point across our value chain. It is by recognising the significance of the impact of our customer experiences and

mitigating against any frustrations that we can realise our ultimate goal of turning our beloved airline into a sustainable, world-class airline.

With that said, I am happy to inform you that our OTP (on-time performance) for the month of January was 83 % and 88 % for 10 minutes and 15 minutes respectively. OTP provides definitive measurement criteria of whether an aircraft has closed its cabin doors and started push back procedures on time, as advertised by the airline, and within the slot time allocated by airport authorities. ACSA carries out its measurement in accordance with the Local Access and Transport Area universal standard benchmark, which considers a 15-minute deviation from the scheduled time as an on-time departure.

This achievement fills me with a tremendous amount of pride, as it proves that we are already on our way to achieving our goal of providing you with reliable, prompt and efficient service.

SAADA – the South African Antique, Art & Design Association – is changing the perception that antiques and art expos are exclusively reserved for the elite. As well as antiques, a wide range of exhibitors will also showcase art and design from all eras, with items which are light on the pocket, as well as more expensive investment pieces. While the list of exhibitors is still to be confirmed, previous events have seen the likes of Bancroft Vintage, who specialise in vintage estate jewellery; Unicorn Antiques and Kunsthandel HWC Dullaert, who offer a fine selection of museum quality treasures of a European and Oriental origin; and The Old Corkscrew, a silver dealer of international renown. One of the highlights will be the “Find the Fake” competition. A forgery will be placed somewhere within the exhibition hall and those who can ferret it out could win some amazing prizes.

The Kings and Queens of Comedy, Durban ICC

The Kings and Queens of Comedy have buffed their comical armour and sharpened their witty swords in preparation for their return – by popular demand – to the Durban ICC in February. Comedy lovers can look forward to a stellar line-up of some of South Africa’s funniest stand-up comedians as they take laughter and hilarity to the next level. Leading the pack as the evening’s MC is Darren Maule, who will be hosting the show’s 11 comedians. In the royal court representing the kings are Carvin Goldstone, Chester Missing, Dillan Oliphant, Kagiso Lediga, Muthu Murugan, Rory Petzer and Yaaseen Barnes, while the belles of the ball include Angel Campey, Celeste Ntuli, Krijay Govender and Tumi Morake. ORIGINALLy AN underwater competition, the categories were expanded in recent years to enable non-diving photographers to enter the Land category, with photographs eligible from anywhere within iSimangaliso Wetland Park. This resulted in an interesting mix of images, including ones of the recently introduced lions in the uMkhuze section of the park.

The overall winning photograph, of a Midas blenny (Ecsenius midas), was taken by seasoned professional photographer Dr Geoff Spiby, who travelled from Cape

Town with family and friends to participate. Geoff also won the Advanced Underwater category with his portfolio entitled “At home where I usually live on the reef”. His prizes totalled around R60,000, and included underwater camera housing equipment and a shark diving trip to Fiji.

His son, Kevin, scooped the prize for photographing the most fish species during the six-day competition – 135 of the more than 1,200 species that are known to occur in this section of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

Professional photographer Allen Walker, a past winner and one of the judges of the competition, said: “The iSimangaliso Sodwana Bay Shootout 2015 powered by Nauticam is one of only a handful of competitions around the world held at a specific location, where all the competitors compete in the same conditions, with the same rules and amount of time. Entrants need to produce world-class portfolios over a five-day shooting period, and at the end of the day the best underwater photographer is judged the overall winner. This is the truest test of any underwater photographer’s skills and the fairest form of competition amongst competitors from South Africa and around the world.

“Sodwana Bay did not disappoint, with a week of outstanding diving conditions and, with some top notch photographers back in the competition, we saw the

standard of photography once again make this event of world class standard. We hope to see this become the premier South African underwater photography contest, with the support of all South African and international underwater photographers.”

According to event organiser Brian Ring of Reefteach, one of iSimangalio’s licensed Sodwana-based dive operators: “The event went off extremely well and once again showcased not only the natural attractions of this coastal jewel, but also provided a great fun, family event with environmental education, informative talks by marine specialists and a range of musical entertainment.”

If riding the waves isn’t your thing, and you prefer “catching” some of the delicious fare that gets served up at Richards Bay’s many restaurants, then you’ll find that surf-fishing off the long stretches of beach North of the harbour delivers daily fresh catches, including kingfish, kob and grunter. Two Mile Beach and Five Mile Beach are both superb fishing locations and, while reachable by road, a four-wheel drive puts you in gear to truly engage with the area. Two Mile Beach, situated between Soetwaterstrand and Vyldevallei, is close to Kampstrand, as well as the suburban area of Meerensee, or Meer en See (Lake and Sea in Afrikaans).

Kampstrand is surrounded by lush vegetation and is also a great fishing beach, as is Soetwaterstrand. Popular beaches nearby to Richards Bay include Mbonambi Beach and Mtunzini Beach, which are both well known for swimming and fishing.

A Cultural Awakening

The 4th edition of the Cape Town Art Fair, which will take place from 19th to 21st February, promises to be nothing short of world-class. As one of the leading international art fairs on the African continent, showcasing the very best contemporary art from Africa and around the world, the fair has attracted both local and global interest from collectors, leading galleries, and public institutions.

The Cape Town Art Fair

CAPE TOWN’S vibrant and ever-growing art scene, as well as its reputation as a top-class global tourist destination, makes it a compelling city for national and international art aficionados to congregate in. Taking place this year at the expansive Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), the fair is bringing all the top galleries under one roof, and promises an exciting three day programme of talks, curated walkabouts and more. “The Fair will feature a diversity of work that represents the forefront of innovation, bringing together contemporary art from Africa and the world,” says Matthew Partridge, the fair director.

According to Partridge, “The art fair is a commercial platform which is responsible to its clients, as well as to building a cultural economy.” The appeal of the fair is content-focussed, as well as being geographically driven, and aims not only to showcase the new trends in contemporary art and to expose galleries to collectors and collectors to new, emerging artists, but also to adapt the very best international practises to help grow a specific economic platform for the art market. An art fair is important because it gives one an overview of what a marketplace is doing. “Contemporary African art was on the tips of the world’s tongues at the recent 2015 Art Basel, and the 2016 Cape Town Art Fair is the perfect platform from which to continue the conversation,” says Partridge.

So, who goes to an art fair? The best galleries in South Africa and Africa are invited to participate in the event, as well as artists (both local and international), collectors, art world professionals, and members of the general public. For those who are not well versed in the art world, the curated walkabouts are a must. These are led by a knowledgeable curator who can explain the different forms, mediums and concepts, and thereby enable a better understanding of what is being exhibited. In addition to this, the Talks Program, which features a host of local and international participants, will address and reconsider the relationships of art fairs, cultural institutions and inter-continental exchange, while placing specific focus on Africa and its ever-growing global conversation around contemporary art production.

International speakers include: Founder and Director of Biz Art in Shanghai, Davide Quadrio; Curator of International Art at London’s Tate Modern, Kerryn Greenberg; Clare Lilley, Director of the yorkshire Sculpture Park and Curator of the Frieze Sculpture Park 2015; Alia Swastika, Director of the 13th Biennale Jogja yogyakarta; Commissioner and Artistic Director of the Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art in Ekaterinburg, Russia, Alisa Prudnikova; and artist Zhuang Hui from China. They will be joined by Curator of Special Projects at the Wits Art Museum, Fiona Rankin-Smith;

Raphael Chikukwa, Chief Director of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe; and Christopher Till, Director of the upcoming Javett Centre for the Arts at the University of Pretoria and the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg.

One of the Fair’s special projects, Tomorrows/Today, will be co-curated by Azu Nwagbogu and Ruth Simbao, who will be joined by a jury panel comprising the Visual Art Curator at the Steirischer Herbst Festival in Graz, Austria, Luigi Fassi; Curator of Contemporary Art at the Iziko National Gallery, Ernestine White; and Collector/Producer of SABC’s Generations, Mfundi Vundla. The project will feature eight solo representations by artists who are at the cutting edge of experimental contemporary art production.

This year, the Cape Town Art Fair is proud to coincide with Art Week Cape Town, which also aims to shine a light on the vibrant and exciting contemporary art scene in Cape Town. This will open in the week leading up to the

Art Fair and close on 25th February with Iziko Museums’ Open Museums Night, something that will enlighten audiences to the importance of museums in the art world and the strong need to keep them alive.

“Art is there to change our perspectives and to make us see the world a little bit differently. The point of a fair is to bring people together to unify a previously rather disparate part of the world,” explains Partridge. Last year’s fair attracted over 7,000 visitors with over R20 million in sales recorded. This year, at the new expanded venue, the Cape Town Art Fair hopes to increase these figures and bring about a new awareness to the art world in Africa.

laidback capital.

Downtime in the Friendly City

On the Waterfront PE’s sundrenched beaches see a lot of action, so start the

day with a seaside walk, commencing from MacArthur Baths, a pool complex on King’s Beach in Humewood. As you head south along paved promenades and raised boardwalks, you’ll weave between surfers, joggers and sun-worshippers, passing the Boardwalk casino complex and Shark Rock Pier, before eventually hitting Cape Recife Nature Reserve, where you can stop at SAMREC to gape at rescued penguins being nursed by volunteers (samrec.org.za).

If you’d rather drive, you can also follow the circular Ibhayi Sunshine Saunter, a scenic route continuing all the way to Schoenmakerskop and beyond, into the countryside. The drive also takes you to the enormous dunes of Sardinia Bay, a superb picnic beach and also the start of the 8 km Sacramento Trail coastal walk.

Back in town, opposite Humewood Beach, you’ll find Bayworld (www.bayworld.co.za), incorporating a snake park and oceanarium, as well as a museum featuring a reconstruction of local dinosaur Algoasaurus, and bits of shipwrecked galleons.

For something a bit more adventurous set off with Raggy Charters (www.raggycharters.co.za) to explore St Croix Island marine reserve where 20,000 African

penguins breed. From June through early January, Humpback whales – which mate and calve in Nelson Mandela Bay – can be spotted.

Step Back in TimeDonkin Reserve is an open public space where Sir Rufane

Shaw Donkin, one-time governor of the Cape, built a memorial to his wife, Elizabeth. She died in India before Donkin came to South Africa and he named Port Elizabeth in her memory. The Reserve, with its lighthouse and stone pyramidal memorial, is the starting point for the Donkin Heritage Trail, a 5 km self-guided walking route covering 47 key historic points in PE’s old Hill area. Grab a map from the lighthouse office, and explore Donkin Street, a row of quaint Victorian houses collectively declared a national monument. On the sixth floor of 44 Strand Street a small museum dedicated to black-consciousness leader Steve Biko is housed in the room where he died while being interrogated by security police.

The Heritage Trail takes in mostly colonial-settler architecture, but you can also follow modern sculptures along the pathway down to Market Square. Here, behind Queen Victoria’s marble statue, PE’s beautiful Gothic-style Main Library features awesome stained glass windows,

elevated walkways, countless books and several ghosts, so step inside for a bit of a Harry Potter moment.

Nearby stands Africa’s oldest opera house, and right around the corner is the entrance to the decrepit-looking Stage Door pub (phoenixhotel.co.za). Go upstairs for a drink amidst the plethora of Fifties’ Americana. The dive-style restaurant-cum-bar is a motley concoction packed with paraphernalia and whimsy, with sawdust on the floor, wood stained by decades of spilled drinks, and displays of everything from ancient cameras and personalised number plates to record players and sewing machines.

Down in the Valley, Up on the Hill South End – aka “The Valley” – is where a former paint

factory was transformed into the light-filled Bridge Street Brewery (www.bridgestreet.co.za), which sports an all-day café, bar and bistro. Connoisseurs of the strong stuff will probably want to sample the Black Dragon Double Chocolate Stout that’s brewed on site by microbrewing pioneer, Lex Mitchell (who started Knysna’s Mitchells Brewery), along with his premium pale pilsner, bitter ale, and dry cider. Sink your teeth into thin, crispy pizzas or order up lots of tapas to share.

Nearby, Colonial Kitchen is a family-friendly, all-

day restaurant (serving innovative pastas, a pizza with prickly pear preserve, and such unusual offerings as goat curry potjie) with craft beer and regular live music events on Friday evenings, and on Sundays, they have “Jazz by the River”.

Also in the Valley is Friendly Stranger, an atmospheric café in a converted 150-year-old building with rough, exposed brick walls, antiques and mismatched furniture. It doubles as an art gallery, does dinner three times a week, and has live music performances occasionally.

Until a decade or so ago, Richmond Hill was a virtual slum. But prostitutes and drug peddlers have been replaced by hipsters and lunching ladies, mostly thanks to the arrival of buzzing restaurants. The original Vovo Telo – now a nationwide bakery and restaurant chain – is here, and still offers some of the best people-watching in town. Most of the Richmond Hill action, though, is on Stanley Street – take your pick between Sticky Fingers with its spare ribs and rib-eye steaks; SoHo Fushin Lounge (fushin.co.za), a trendy sushi bar; or Two Olives, which is known for its inventive tapas.

Better still, turn onto Bain Street and step into Flava to sample John Burger’s creative cooking. This former butcher loves inventing (tasty burgers made with beef, lamb,

Alternatively, head for iconic Shark Rock Pier and prepare for crowds of beach lovers, surfers, sea kayakers, runners, strollers and voyeurs gathered on and off Hobie Beach. La balade vous mènera aussi aux gigantesques dunes de la baie de Sardinia, ainsi qu’à une magnifique plage idéale pour les pique niques, et au départ du sentier côtier de randonnée pédestre de Sacramento, long de 8 km.

De retour en ville vous pourriez vous rendre à Bayworld, qui associe un parc à reptiles et un océanarium, ainsi qu’un musée. Le musée vous permet d’apprécier des reconstitutions de dinosaures telle celle de l’Algoasaurus, autrefois une créature de la région, et vous permet aussi d’admirer des morceaux de galions naufragés.

Pour les plus aventureux Raggy Charters propose des sorties en bateau dans la réserve marine de St Croix dans laquelle se reproduisent plus de 20,000 pingouins africains.

Un saut dans le tempsLa réserve de Donkin, avec son phare et sa stèle

commémorative pyramidale, est le point de départ du Sentier du patrimoine de Donkin (Donkin Heritage Trail), un circuit pédestre autoguidé de 5 km de long qui vous permettra d’apprécier 47 jalons historiques importants du quartier de Old Hill de PE. Vous pourriez aussi aller chercher une carte de la ville au bureau du phare et explorer Donkin Street, une rangée de maisons victoriennes pittoresques déclarée Monument National.

Le long du Sentier du patrimoine (Heritage Trail) vous trouverez surtout des bâtiments de l’architecture coloniale mais le chemin menant à Market Square propose des édifices plus modernes. C’est là que se trouve la magnifique Main Library (bibliothèque) de style gothique qui comprend de superbes vitraux, des passerelles surélevées, un nombre incalculable de livres et de nombreux fantômes – l’endroit rêvé pour se croire dans un roman de Harry Potter.

Non loin de là se trouve le plus vieil opéra d’Afrique

et au coin de la rue se tient l’entrée décrépite du pub Stage Door (phoenixhotel.co.za). Pourquoi ne pas aller prendre un verre dans ce décor rempli d’objets américains des années 50. Sont exposés dans ce restaurant-bar toutes sortes de vieux objets tels des appareils photo, des numéros d’immatriculation personnalisés, ainsi que des tourne-disques et des machines à coudre.

Dans la vallée et sur la collineDans le quartier de South End, dit « La Vallée » (the

Valley), se trouve une ancienne usine de peinture qui fut transformée en une brasserie gorgée de lumière du nom de Bridge Street (www.bridgestreet.co.za), qui abrite aussi un café ouvert toute la journée, un bar et un restaurant. Les amateurs de bières auront probablement envie de goûter à la bière blonde plisner, à la bière rousse et au cidre sec, ainsi qu’à la Black Dragon Double Chocolate Stout (bière brune forte), toutes brassées sur place.

Non loin de là se trouve le Colonial Kitchen, un restaurant pour toute la famille ouvert toute la journée (ce dernier sert des plats de pâtes originaux, des pizzas à la confiture de figues de barbarie, et des mets inhabituels comme le ragoût de chèvre au curry) qui propose des bières artisanales et de la musique live de façon régulière.

Dans le quartier de la Vallée se trouve aussi le Friendly Stranger, un café d’ambiance installé dans un bâtiment reconverti vieux de 150 ans qui comprend des murs rustiques en briques exposées, des antiquités et du vieux mobilier dépareillé. Le café, qui fait aussi office de galerie d’art, est ouvert pour le dîner trois fois par semaine.

Jusqu’à il y a environ une dizaine d’années, Richmond Hill était un quartier mal famé. Les prostituées et les dealers ont été remplacés par des jeunes branchés et des dames sortant déjeuner, principalement grâce à l’ouverture de restaurants à la mode. Le Vovo Telo d’origine – qui est devenu une chaîne de boulangeries et de restaurants au

niveau national – s’y trouve encore et reste l’un des meilleurs endroits de la ville pour observer les gens. À Richmond Hill, l’action se déroule principalement a Stanley Street où l’on trouve le restaurant Sticky Fingers (Doigts collants) qui propose des spareribs et des entrecôtes, le bar à sushi SoHo Fushin Lounge (fushin.co.za) et le Two Olives, connu pour ses tapas originales.

Mais pour mieux encore, dirigez-vous vers Bain Street et allez goûter aux créations de John Burger au restaurant Flava. Cet ancien boucher aime inventer et créer, et il offre - sur demande car elles ne sont pas sur le menu - de merveilleuses viandes.

Couchers de soleil, diners et bavardagesDepuis la terrasse de l’hôtel Radisson Blu faisant face à la

mer, qui s’etend de la piscine à Tabù, le lounge bar chic de l’hôtel, vous pouvez profiter du coucher du soleil tout en sirotant un cocktail. Le Blue Waters Café (bluewaterscafe.com), sans prétention mais très accueillant, vous offre aussi un point de vue superbe.

La cuisine de Charlie’s Pizza & Pasta (charliespizza.co.za) qui est très appréciée des familles avec enfants, est préparée avec des ingrédients issus de l’agriculture biologique. Leurs pizzas sublimes, comme par exemple celle à la saucisse au fenouil – leur spécialité - ou celle à l’agneau à la grecque, sont cuites dans un vrai four à pizza. Si vous avez envie d’être plus sophistiqué alors allez chez Ginger () qui vous propose des recettes à l’ancienne ainsi que des viandes succulentes et des fruits de mer frais pêchés.

Envie de faire la fête ? À Walmer, vous pourriez aller vous déhancher au night-club BaliZZa dont la clientèle a plutôt tendance à être jeune. Autrement, dirigez-vous vers Parliament Street au centre de PE et vous n’aurez que l’embarras du choix pour ce qui est de bars et de clubs. Vous pourriez aussi aller au Gondwana Café dans le quartier de Humewood, tout près de la plage où votre journée a commencé, qui propose des soirées animées par des DJ ainsi que des spectacles.

SITUATED ON one of Cape Town’s most scenic routes, just five minutes from Camps Bay beach, it is no wonder that diners flock to Azure, not only for its memorable views, but also to dine on the exquisite dishes prepared by award-winning executive chef, Christo Pretorius. Under his leadership the restaurant has won not one, but two American Express Platinum Fine Dining Awards (2014 and 2015).

Whether it is a relaxed English breakfast you’re after, an à la carte lunch with friends, a top notch dinner, or a weekend buffet, Azure has it all. Meals can be enjoyed in the nautical themed restaurant, or on the spacious outdoor terrace. Pretorius serves up a selection of international cuisine with notable South African influences. His focus is on using fresh, seasonal produce, and sustainably caught seafood, all of which he prepares in the classic French style with a contemporary flair. Christo’s Menu, one of the tasting menu options, starts off with a delicious ostrich tartare which is complemented by a pickled egg yolk, red wine gel, sour dough wafer, caper berry mayo, thyme and ricotta. The second course is a baby calamari risotto with roast calamari broth, crispy tentacles and a squid ink cracker, followed by a slow cooked egg with a pea and mint velouté, spring garden salad, crispy pancetta and crispy onion flakes. For mains, the springbok loin with baked celery root, savoy cabbage, crispy bacon and fermented berries is a treat. And it is all rounded off with the Strawberry Field, a strawberry pudding with basil sorbet and salted peanut sponge.

From the à la carte menu, some of the Tollman-inspired favourites include the crayfish and prawn cocktail, which is a firm family favourite, and is made with fresh crayfish and queen prawns with lettuce, rocket, avocado and lime segments, dressed with a piquant Marie Rose sauce. Another firm favourite is the legendary grilled seafood platter which consists of local West Coast crayfish, prawns, medium langoustines, fresh fish, grilled baby calamari tubes and mussels, with steamed basmati rice, a green salad, and traditional peri-peri, garlic and lemon

butter sauces. Gregory Mutambe is the restaurant’s Head Sommelier and is always

eager to assist guests in making the perfect pairing choices for their meals. The extensive wine list, which, year on year, is awarded the Diamond Certification by Diners Club in its Wine List Awards, is world class and pays homage to local as well as international wines, and includes a vinoteque with a private selection of aged wines.

Look at Bloemfontein on a map, and you’ll see that the roads radiate outwards from the city like a sunburst. Along most of these roads, game reserves, small nature reserves, dams and stretches of arid wilderness can be found to explore. Linked up by various regional and provincial routes, with some lovely towns along the way, you’ll need a couple of days to explore the surrounding wilderness with Bloemfontein as your base. Plus you’ll be glad you took the time.

Closer to Home Even though Bloemfontein is a growing city, the natural

world is very much a part of the city, from its tree-lined avenues to Naval Hill in the Franklin Game Reserve. One of only two city based wildlife reserves in the world, this 250 ha reserve is slightly unusual, in that if you look past a blue wildebeest, zebra or giraffe, you’re likely to see the city’s skyline. It’s incongruous in a way, but you get used to it pretty quickly, and a walk around the reserve or a drive up to the top of Naval Hill to take in the view is a great way to take a breather from the bustle (or relative bustle, at least) of Bloemfontein.

To the NorthJust a 45-minute drive north of the city on the R700

is Krugersdrift Dam, fed by the Modder River and surrounded by the Soetdoring Nature Reserve. With a name that translates to “sweet thorn”, you’d expect to see a lot of acacias… and you will. Soetdoring’s 7,500 ha of thornveld, grassland and wetland is home to large pockets of the aforementioned tree, with its three distinct ecosystems also home to a variety of animal and birdlife. Some 290 bird species have been recorded here, including little bitterns, goliath herons, melodious larks, green-backed herons and Kalahari scrub-robins.

The game includes gemsbok, eland, black wildebeest, springbok and zebra, and there is a separate enclosure (away from the herbivores) that’s home to lion, cheetah and wild dog. Bring along a picnic or braai stuff and set up at one of the spots along the dam, or pack some comfortable shoes and walk one of the easy hiking trails.

Where the Sun RisesAbout 70 km to the east of Bloemfontein, on the N8,

is the small town of Thaba ‘Nchu (which means “black mountain”, named for the eponymous mountain nearby). Maria Moroka Game Reserve is set a little to the south of the town around the Montloatse Setlogelo Dam, and is home to eland, black wildebeest, red hartebeest, springbok, blesbok, zebra and white rhino. The birdlife is fantastic, with the most notable occasional visitors being large flocks of blue cranes. With its gently undulating grassy plains, acacia wooded hills, and the (relatively) imposing mountain watching over the park, it’s quite dramatic, especially when a summer storm rolls through in the evening. The clear air also makes the sky feel spectacularly big, as if the earth were flat. If you get caught up in it all, you needn’t necessarily drive back to Bloem the same day – the reserve’s Black Mountain Leisure & Conference Hotel is supremely comfortable, and makes for a nice treat for a night or two.

Where the Sun SetsIf you set out early from Bloemfontein you can check

out Mokala National Park in a day. It’s a two-and-a-half hour drive due west on the N8, but absolutely worth the effort. With its wide plains broken only by small hills and camel thorn trees, this 26,000 ha park has a network of 70 km of roads, and is home to more than 20 animal species, including Cape buffalo, black and white rhino, Tsessebe and roan antelope. If you leave Bloem really early, the birding is fantastic from sunrise until about 09h00, with the sandveld and rocky hillocks ringing with the calls of endemic species such as the black-chested prinia and chestnut-vented tit-babblers.

South SideAn easy two-hour drive south of Bloem on the N1 is

the Gariep Dam, the country’s largest dam with a surface area of 370 km² when full. Only a dam this big could have three nature reserves adjacent to it. Totalling 85,000 ha, the Oviston Nature Reserve, Tussen-die-Riviere Reserve and the Gariep Nature Reserve are home to some fantastic wildlife, including aardvark, aardwolf, African wild cat, bat-eared foxes, brown hyena, Cape clawless otters and Cape foxes. Birders can look out for black eagles, blue cranes, secretary birds and Steppe buzzards, while anglers can try their hand at a spot of fly fishing, with the waters home to largemouth and smallmouth yellow fish.

More Than Just a Stopover

Exploring Harare

WHILE THE country as a whole often gets a pretty bad rap sheet in the media, Harare is an attractive, relaxed city full of activities and sights. The city has a natural feel to it thanks to its tree lined streets and the many parks and gardens that dot this metropolis.

The Harare Gardens are a great place for a leisurely walk in nature, and is also home to the National Gallery of Zimbabwe. This is a must-visit for art enthusiasts who want to see a visual representation of African culture. The exhibits, which change monthly, feature a mix of contemporary local art, as well as work from artists across the continent. All different mediums and techniques feature here, including paintings, sculptures, carvings, and photography.

On the shores of Lake Chivero is Kuimba Shiri Bird Park, the only bird park in Zimbabwe, and an establishment with the first free flying bird display in Africa, and over 460 species of indigenous birds. The birds that call this sanctuary home are orphaned, injured, or abandoned. Viewing other game in the national park is also an option while cruising the Chivero by boat. Goat, as well as game, such as springbok and kudu, is on the menus of many traditional establishments in Harare. At some restaurants, you can also expect such unusual offerings as crocodile tail and warthog. In the city’s markets, mopane worms are on offer to those with an adventurous palate.

For traditional Zimbabwean cuisine, visit Garwe in Harare for either lunch or dinner. Under the thatched roof, seated around a large fire, you can enjoy sadza with either guinea fowl, goat, or a medley of vegetables. For more of an international, fusion dining experience, make your way to Amanzi. The restaurant is set in an old colonial house with local art adorning the walls and African décor creating a lively atmosphere. Diners can enjoy meals out on the patio – weather permitting – overlooking the garden waterfall.

Game Driving and Beyond

Thanks to its exceptional game viewing opportunities, The Kruger Park has a plethora of accommodation options for the many visitors who flock to the park each year. Some are certainly better than others, and two such superb options are nThambo Tree Camp and Ezulwini Billy’s Lodge, both of which are dedicated to ensuring that guests have the best possible time.

on stilts, each surrounded by trees and with a balcony overlooking the plains beyond – an ideal place to enjoy a drink and watch some wildlife inhabitants pass by, which they will, as the camp is unfenced. It is also not uncommon for an elephant or two to come right up to the communal area to take a drink from the splash pool.

Intimate and cosy, the camp can accommodate ten people, so dinners are enjoyed together around a table in the dining area where either your game ranger or tracker will join you.

The twice daily game drives are obviously the main feature at nThambo, with each vehicle coming complete with both a game ranger and a tracker. They make a formidable team, and not much passes them unnoticed. As we drove down the dirt road, they stopped to investigate some marks in the dust. “Looks like something was

dragged across here,” says the ranger. So off they went to find the source of the tracks, which turned out to be a duiker which had been dragged by a leopard and deposited in a dry ravine. The ranger promised to return during the afternoon game drive to try and catch the leopard returning to finish his meal.

And we did. True to their word, the ranger and tracker found the leopard in question taking his meal to a better hiding spot. I had never seen a leopard before, so this was an extremely special game drive for me, and I am sure for the rest of the guests.

On the second day we headed to a popular watering hole, where we were rewarded with sightings of a herd of buffalo numbering around 300, as well as a herd of about 200 elephants who were taking turns (although, not in a friendly manner) at the water’s edge, with a giraffe on the outskirts patiently waiting his turn.

Ezulwini Billy’s LodgeAfter two days at nThambo, I was off to Ezulwini Billy’s

Lodge 45 minutes away. Comprising six villas – three of which are luxury options, each with its own splash pool – Ezulwini is a mix of modernity and African-style décor and design. The villas have air cons which quietly banish the heat in the open plan lounge, kitchen, and bedroom. The bathrooms looks out onto the plains, so you can relax in the spacious tub while looking out at the spectacular view.

Meals are eaten in the communal dining room and, on favourable days, out on the deck overlooking the wilderness. Breakfast, after the 06h00 game drive, is a choice of eggs with sides, accompanied by a buffet of fresh fruit, juices, and coffee. Lunch is a spread of homely dishes, while dinner – served after the afternoon game drive – is a delicious three course affair.

As with nThambo, game driving is the name of the game here. The rangers and trackers are also equally dedicated to ensuring that you get to as much as possible. Continuously speaking on the radio with other rangers to get leads on the reserve’s inhabitants, the ranger will race to the other side of the reserve if needs be to catch something spectacular. It is because of this that we were able to see a black rhino – a rare, incredible experience – as well as a pride of lions, complete with a big-maned male, playful cubs, and watchful females.

Something that truly sets Ezulwini apart is their “wine cave”. The wine cellar is set against the natural rock face of a cave and surrounded by historical African items. Our game ranger showed off his varied talents by explaining all the different vintages, as well as the historical items on display.

Hey Sugar, Sucrose!

So much for Mary Poppins! All those spoonfuls of sugar are contributing to the biggest health threats facing humanity – diabetes, obesity, heart disease… The list is long. The bottom line is that sugar is bad for you. Although a valuable fuel for our cells, it can be toxic when consumed often and in the incorrect forms.

“THE SUGAR debate has been lively in recent years and has increased awareness of the importance of a healthy diet in preventing and treating disease and improving wellbeing,” says world-renowned psychologist and nutrition expert, Patrick Holford. “But, at the same time, many people are understandably confused by the substantial differences between what various experts advocate as being healthy. Some foods, for example, contain healthier sugars and are actually better for you than foods that are ‘sugar free’,” he says.

Coupled with this confusion is the difficulty of cutting the craving for sweetness out of our lives completely – which is where, for the conscious minded, sugar alternatives come in.

The question is: How do you know which are good, which are bad, and how much you can have?

“It is important to understand how sugar works, which natural sugars will help sustain level blood sugar levels and which artificial sweeteners to steer clear of. That way

you can satisfy your sweet tooth, without suffering the consequences,” says Holford.

Understanding SugarThe sugar our bodies run off is glucose. The body is

designed to break down natural sugars into glucose, which then enters the bloodstream to power our cells. Most fruit, for example, provides the body with a natural sugar called fructose. Fructose has to be converted into glucose by the liver. It is more slow-releasing than cane sugar, with a Glycaemic Index (GI) of 23. Glycaemic Index is the measure of the speed at which a sugar raises blood glucose levels. Glucose, by definition, has a GI of 100.

While the GI of a food tells you how quickly its sugars raise your blood sugar levels compared to glucose, the Glycaemic Load (GL) is a better measure, because it tells you what a specific amount of a sugar does to your blood sugar.

Sugar AlternativesThe Good, The Bad & the Tasty

The Sugars in Our FoodNature never provides fructose (found mainly in fruit,

but also extracted from corn) without fibre. This means that when you eat the whole food, your liver gets drip fed fructose, which it converts into glucose. However, if you have a direct and excessive supply of fructose (like in a can of Coke), it puts pressure on the liver and can be turned directly into fat.

“Any source of refined fructose, from fresh juice to Sprite, is best limited,” says Holford.

White sugar, or sucrose, is a glucose and a fructose molecule with a GI of about 70, which makes it faster releasing than fructose, but slower than glucose. Honey, molasses and maple syrup have a similar GI to regular sugar – brown or white.

Milk sugar is called lactose and is made up of a unit of glucose and a unit of galactose. It has a GI of 46, which is faster releasing than fructose.

There are also sugar alcohols. These usually end in “-tol” – maltitol, xylitol, lactitol, mannitol, sorbitol, isomalt. Some, like xylitol, are naturally occurring and healthier. They are sweet tasting, but have a fraction of the calories and a fraction of the effect on your blood sugar. Others, like maltitol, are manmade.

The synthetic sugars sorbitol, mannitol, isomalt, lactitol and erythritol all have very low GI scores, below 10, and are often used to sweeten processed foods. you’ll find sorbitol, for example, used in children’s chewable sweets and even vitamins. While not “natural”, the only real side-effect of sugar alcohols at high doses is the potential for loose bowels.

Xylose, the precursor of xylitol, is the predominant sugar in berries, cherries and plums. These are the best fruits to eat, as they have the lowest GI score and have little effect on your blood glucose. Apples and pears contain mainly fructose. Dates, grapes and raisins, however, have simpler sugars and a GI as high as white sugar. Patrick Holford warns us to not be fooled by the sugar industry, who exploit this by using grape juice concentrate as a “natural” sugar or adding dates, raisins and banana to “sugar free” bars and smoothies.

Artificial Sweeteners Xylitol is the best natural sugar alcohol with a GI of

just eight. That means that nine teaspoons of xylitol has the same effect on your blood sugar as one teaspoon of regular sugar. It is good for cakes, jams, or added to cereal or teas.

Another interesting natural sugar, which comes from a South American root, is yacón. It is high in insulin, which also helps lower blood sugar effects.

There are many manmade artificial sweeteners, such as aspartame, that have no GI, but there are health problems associated with their excess use. Patrick Holford recommends avoiding these.

“The most important thing,” says Holford, “is to have less sugar overall, and get your sweet kicks primarily from whole foods. you can wean yourself off having a sweet tooth by gradually decreasing the level of sweetness in foods and drinks. Also, by combining protein with carbohydrate foods, you can slow down the speed at which the sugars are released, lowering the GL of the food.”

The long awaited return of Ford’s historic halo car, the Mustang, has turned

out to be one of the most eventful launches of the last few months. As a sharp

handling performance car with a rich, 50-year tradition behind it, the Mustang

has retained its muscular, no-nonsense visual impact which, for five decades, has

had people stopping in their tracks.

THE RETURN of the two-door Mustang, the only Ford product not sporting the Blue Oval, was turned into a festive event when the South African media came to view, photograph, and drive a car which, initially, was launched five decades ago and which has managed to capture the hearts of more than nine million buyers since then.

The launch to mark the return of the Mustang was much more than a nostalgic trip, however, since the car is not what it used to be. The Mustang, with its four-cylinder 2.3-litre engine as an option, will still appeal to traditionalists and lovers of American muscle cars though, since the V8 has been retained – sounding just as rough and gruff as it did in days gone by.

As a car with a pedigree as long as your arm (the Mustang has starred in many movies, as well as in music videos and video games) the Pony Car (to use its favourite nickname) has also proven itself on racetracks all over the world, while achieving fame as a sought-after collector’s car.

But what is it that makes the Mustang such a cult symbol?Is it the sound of the V8 doing 5,500 r/min, or the

feeling of the wind in your hair (for those who still have some) in ragtop guise? Perhaps it is the intuitively sharp handling and tremendous acceleration? My guess is that it is all of the above, and more.

Take the new 233 kW 2.3-litre EcoBoost option as an example. Instinctively, it sounds like the engine will not be powerful enough for the Mustang’s hefty

reputation. yet, it effortlessly achieves the Holy Grail of automotive engineering – 100 kW/litre engine capacity. Little wonder, then, that although it is seen as a departure from the V8 norm, the EcoBoost certainly is my favourite – if you can live without the V8’s guttural sound effects.

Other clues which indicate that the Mustang is no longer a sloppy-handling yank Tank may be found in the fully independent, all-round suspension and the balanced weight distribution (54 % at the front for the 5-litre, and 53 % in the case of the EcoBoost). The result of this engineering excellence? A car that can compete on level terms with its European rivals when it comes down to the 0-100 km/h sprint, as well as at top speed.

Whether you are on challenging, narrow Chapman’s Peak Drive or on the racetrack, the new Mustang is a technological tour de force. There is an all-aluminium bonnet, front wings, and suspension components – augmented by high-strength steels, laser welding, and hydro-forming techniques for a stiffer body, an enhanced driving experience, and more than adequate safety.

Available as either a fastback or a convertible, specification levels are high and inclusive. There are no hidden add-ons, apart from a modest R750 should you really, really have to have metallic paint.

Key elements of the new Mustang, as one would expect, centre around two aspects: looks and performance. Here, the designers have brilliantly retained key elements of the original Mustang, including

the long, sculpted hood and the short rear deck.What the Ford PR people call an “aviation-inspired”

cockpit is yet another indication that the new Mustang, in a sense, is vastly more European than American. Selectable drive modes include Normal, Sport+, Track, and Snow – another indication of Europe’s influence on this American icon. However, in typical and sensible American fashion, the boot can accommodate two golf bags and the drive is still to the rear wheels, even for the 2.3. “None of this silly front wheel-drive stuff for a Mustang,” one can almost hear the engineers saying.

Having dealt with the beautiful and powerful aspects of the Mustang, it is time to reflect on the justification for a model range which starts at some R700,000 and advances to an impressive R900,000.

Is it worth it?The answer to this, surely, lies in the fact that this

Mustang, like its predecessors, is destined to become an icon. It has all the attributes – quality, performance, a stunning and user-friendly interior, and envy creation – to make it a must-have for those fortunate few who will be able to afford one.

Had I a choice, my vote would go to the EcoBoost Convertible Auto, an “affordable” fun car at a mere R779,900. This, in my view, is the one destined to become a new cult favourite among Mustang enthusiasts.

Service intervals are every 20,000 km, the warranty is good for four years/120,000 km, and there is a five-year/100,000 km service plan. Even more reason to get your name on the waiting list now.

Investors are constantly bombarded with conflicting information on how companies, sectors and economies are performing. So when is the best time to invest?

disturbing images of bomb attacks and shootings in Paris while Russian aeroplanes are being shot down by the Turks. To make matters worse, we are being told of the good growth on shares over the past three years, only to read report after report about the bubbling price-to-earnings ratios (P/E) and declining returns and dividend yields. Surely a correction or even a collapse is imminent? In these conditions, a new investor must feel like a cow on artificial turf.

So when is a good time for new investors to invest? The short answer is now. Today. Why? Because even when general expectations remain fairly bleak (as they are at the moment), that’s just what they are: expectations based on probability. Experts cannot predict what will happen to any given share price in the future with any degree of certainty.

If we turn back the clock, however, the past supports my message that if you have the capital to invest and your allocation and risk tolerance has been determined, it will serve you to invest rather than to wait. It has

happened four times since 1980 that the local stock market has declined by more than 30 % in value in the year following a peak. As horrible as that may have been for investors, you still would have been able to outperform both money market and inflation in all four cases, had you been in the unfortunate position of investing your capital at each peak. In fact, if you had invested in a moderate portfolio consisting of a 60 % investment in local shares and a 40 % investment in local bonds, you would have outperformed inflation by an average of 6 % and outperformed the money market by an average of 5 % in all four of these instances, which were characterised by extremely poor market conditions (all figures excluding taxes).

And so my advice brings me back to Warren Buffett’s most famous outlook: Always invest for the longer term. It doesn’t matter how volatile market conditions may be in the near future, the best time to start investing for the long term, is today.

HOWEVER, IT is widely accepted that Renault was not always a brand revered by many in this country. The history between Renault and South Africa dates back to 1953 when the 4CV was first imported. Five years later, Renault Africa was established, but in 1985 Renault decided to divert from the South African market because of the political climate, while still importing vehicles through Imperial Cars Imports. It was only in the early 2000’s that Renault once again

decided to re-enter the South African market by establishing Renault South Africa. Since then, the car manufacturing company has been able to re-establish their brand with encouraging results.

Today they offer an extensive passenger and commercial range, including the popular Clio, Duster, Captur and the Sandero, with the latter an ongoing competitor in the top ten passenger vehicles sold each month, according to the NAAMSA reports.

Moving Forward

Renault South Africa is known as one of the country’s most prolific and fastest growing car manufacturing brands. With figures showing off industry-leading sales, such as private car sales growing by 92 % within the first half of 2014 and increasing sales by 51.5 % in the overall market during 2014, as well as an array of new models entering the market each year, there is little doubt that Renault South Africa is currently moving in the right direction.

The ClioOne of the main competitors in its class and the vehicle

which put the brand on the map in South Africa by taking the title of Wesbank Car of the year in 2000, is the Clio. It is good to know that access to advanced engines is no longer the preserve of more expensive vehicles, as illustrated by the Blaze’s 66 kW turbo petrol engine. The powerhouse

provides a proven and powerful edge by allowing energetic acceleration from low speeds, thus avoiding excessively frequent gear changes. At 4.5 l/100 km, the Clio Blaze also boasts best-in-class fuel consumption.

The updated Clio Expression is powered by Renault’s Formula 1-inpsired 1.2 litre, 4-cylinder 88 kW Turbo engine. This is a low capacity engine that delivers ample power and torque, and allows for great driving flexibility. Together with the much-anticipated six-speed Efficient Dual Clutch (EDC) auto gearbox, a combination of two parallel half gearboxes which work closely together, it delivers a fuel-efficient drive together with seamless gear changes.

The ride is sturdy, especially on windy patches, and the vehicle handles well on the road. Together with its seductive styling and smart tech, as well as top-notch safety features, it is no wonder that the Clio is a front-runner in its segment.

The CapturRenault has expanded its South African SUV line-up

with the addition of the Captur crossover. The Captur concept debuted at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show and is aimed at South Africa’s ever-growing crossover market, with three derivatives and two turbo-petrol engines.

The vehicle does not boast 4x4 capabilities, but it does offer a little more ground clearance for a comfortable ride on gravel roads. The vehicle is a high-riding crossover model that is designed to rival the Nissan Juke, Peugeot 2008 and Ford EcoSport. It uses the same underpinnings as the Clio, aiming to deliver tough SUV styling cues with low running costs. It is also available with a wide range of customisation options, which is great for buyers looking to personalise their vehicles.

The Captur keeps things contemporary with modern

features, including the new 1.2 litre EDC petrol turbo which boasts Formula 1 technology. The line-up offers two five-speed manual derivatives, the 66 kW Turbo Dynamique and Expression, with the top-of-the-range Dynamique equipped with a six-speed auto.

The EDC is capable of 88 kW at 190 Nm, reaches a top speed of 192 km/h, with fuel consumption rated at 5.4 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 125g/km.

Geared towards cruising comfort rather than delivering a thrilling and sporty drive, this “revved up” Clio, so to speak, is slap bang in the middle between Renault’s B-segment buy and the bigger Duster – with added trendy sophistication.

Entering the New year, the vehicle is sitting steady at number ten on the NAAMSA report for passenger vehicle sales. Who knows? The Captur might just create a few more crossover fans.

THERE IS a clear benefit to buying property jointly. Combining resources means being able to afford a bigger apartment or house, or a home in an area that might otherwise be out of your financial reach – it’s somewhat of a win-win situation.

South Africa is seeing a growing trend of buyers entering the property market in joint-ownership partnerships, and while some may prefer to avoid this, it does offer many people greater opportunities, although careful planning and the drawing up of an agreement is required.

Drawing up a contract of property co-ownership, as with an ante-nuptial agreement, may not be the most romantic way to begin this journey. But instead of seeing it as focusing on the worst case scenario, look at it as an opportunity, while you are both happy and on the same page, to put down in writing how you want to deal with various hypothetical scenario’s.

Once this is done, you can file the document away, and if all goes according to plan, you will never have to look at it again.

When drawing up a contract of co-ownership, it is always advisable to have your agreement checked by an attorney to ensure that all aspects comply with South African law. The agreement should specify:• Who will be responsible for the initial payments, such as

the deposit and transfer fees, and how these costs will be

split between both parties.• The amount that each person is responsible for paying on

an ongoing basis. This includes bond payments, rates and levies, as well as any maintenance that needs to be done to the property.

• What proportion each person will own of the property.• Who is allowed to occupy the property?• How the proceeds from the sale of the property should

be split.• What needs to be done if one party wishes to sell their

portion of the property? • What happens to the property and ownership in the

property if the relationship ends, as well in the event of the death or incapacity of one of the parties?

• How the agreement may be terminated.Always be cognisant of the fact that the property

may not be absolutely ideal for either one or both parties, or what you might have had in mind in the first place. There will be moments where differences of opinion will be voiced, but with enough positivity, sound compromising and maintaining open channels of communication, you’re well on your way to taking this to a whole new level of commitment.

• Company name: Keep it simple. A company name that is difficult to pronounce or spell is a company name that is easy to forget. By overly complicating your company name, you are only making it harder for potential clients to find you. It can be helpful to choose a name that gives an indication of what the business does, such as AdminEasy Pty Ltd, which is a company that helps small businesses to sort out their admin and filing.

• The logo: Too often small businesses spend too much time and money on a logo. Although a strong logo will help pull your brand together, many small businesses change their logo after trading for a few months as their business matures. Remember not to overcomplicate your logo and always ensure it works on a white background.

• The strapline of the business needs to say what it does: It’s helpful to think of a short tag line that describes your business, describing your business/product in four or five words. This is known as a

When planning to take overseas trips for either business or pleasure, most people will undoubtedly be too focused on issues like the weak Rand and navigating busy airports to give much thought to their mobile connectivity. Chances are, however, that once they have finally made it to their destination, staying connected online – and particularly while on the go – will become a major concern. Who can fathom a trip abroad without social media, not to mention Uber?

Don’t Get Stranded Without Connectivity Abroad

MOREOVER, GIVEN today’s high-pressure work environment, many leisure travellers will still need to stay connected with work. So while the kids insist on constant access to Facebook and Instagram for real-time sharing capabilities, many parents will be answering work emails and checking in with colleagues or bosses (well, between updating their Facebook status and posting foodie pictures on Instagram). yet despite this growing need for – and insistence on – mobile connectivity, most South African travellers continue to use “traditional” and expensive means to stay connected when abroad.

For example, many people still turn to prepaid SIM cards for smartphones – in the (mistaken) belief that this is the savviest way to stay connected overseas. But given how many key functions, such as Internet banking, are tied to one’s local SIM card, this presents a security risk on many levels. If travellers don’t have access to their normal mobile numbers when abroad, it leaves them exposed to possible identity theft and fraud.

It must be noted, however, that using prepaid SIM cards for use in tablets does make sense, as travellers can use the data for email and voice services (Skype, Viber, FaceTime, etc.), while still being securely connected to their local services with their regular SIM cards in their smartphones.

So What About Hotel Wi-Fi?While we’re busy busting some myths around

mobile connectivity, we also need to tackle one of the biggest: hotel Wi-Fi.

Almost without fail, most overseas travellers soon discover that hotel Wi-Fi is a poor option. As the 2013 iPass Mobile Workforce Report revealed, over 80 % of respondents reported having had a bad experience with hotel Wi-Fi, even though most hotel guests now consider Wi-Fi a basic need and expect hotels to provide “adequate service”.

So for travellers who need to remain connected for business purposes (not to mention the need to stay connected with family and friends back home) this can be hugely problematic. Indeed, as the same report highlighted,

“vacation time is connected time”. The iPass report found that workers aren’t disconnecting when they go on vacation: The majority (91 %) stay connected wherever they go just so they won’t fall behind while they’re away. And more than half “continue regular daily project work while they’re on vacation, and log in several times a day to work”.

Staying Connected on the MoveLooking beyond security and reliability factors, the other

major failing of hotel or public Wi-Fi is that it’s obviously not mobile. And what is a trip nowadays if one does not have constant access to “essential” apps such as Uber, Google Maps and FaceTime?

The good news for today’s savvy traveller is that there are now an increasing number of secure (and affordable) options beyond the usual prepaid SIM cards and public Wi-Fi. PocketWifi, for example, enables travellers to enjoy the benefits of both mobile and Wi-Fi connectivity. And given the bloated costs of international roaming, it also presents a cost effective way of staying connected – both socially and professionally – when overseas. So while the weak Rand and usual pains of air travel might be out of everyone’s control, today’s traveller can at least remove one headache and find consolation on social media when dealing with the inevitable flight delays and travel hiccups.

DurbanThe cosmopolitan city of Durban is a naturally sun-kissed

paradise renowned for its stunning coastline and subtropical climate. It is also home to one of the most iconic golf courses in the province, namely the historic Durban Country Club (DCC), which has been rated as one of the top courses in the province for over a century and one of the top 100 golf courses in the world.

The DCC is located 1 km north of the Golden Mile beachfront and has incredible views of the ocean, lush green landscape, and the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium. Established in 1922, the club boasts an extremely proud history, and is renowned for its classic Cape Dutch gabled clubhouse, which has been the venue of choice for many important celebrations.

The course itself has also played host to no less than 17 SA Open Championships. It is considered to be one of the most unique and challenging in the world, and the course’s signature 3rd hole is rated to be the very best in the world. The 468 m, par 5 requires players to hit their tee shot from the highest point on the course into the vast valley below, thereby exposing their drive to the gusty winds off the Indian Ocean.

Definitely geared for the more experienced golfer, this challenging course will most certainly be enjoyed, but never mastered. Tees and greens are guarded by large bunkers and

an array of tropical flora and tall trees, while strong onshore winds blow consistently through the valley. It is, however, a must for golf enthusiasts visiting Durban!

North CoastThe KwaZulu-Natal North Coast region is a golfing

holiday dream. For those wanting to combine the beauty of nature with unspoiled beaches and wildlife, this is the perfect destination. The Prince’s Grant golf course is among the finest on the North Coast, and is ranked among the best in South Africa. The coastal scenery, large, artfully designed greens, hazards and bunkers, as well as the impressive fairways create a completely unique and challenging experience for golfers of all abilities. The course, designed by Peter Matkovich, is a links/parkland layout and is laid out over four ridgelines overlooking the Indian Ocean.

The course is also part of a magnificent residential estate which includes a four-star lodge, and was voted Top Golf Development in South Africa by the World Property Awards in 2011. It has proudly been named a site of ecological importance by KZN Ezemvelo Wildlife because of its impressive replanting program of indigenous tree species, transforming a sugar cane monoculture back into a coastal forest ecosystem.

well as a number of international events such as the World Amateur Golfers Championships and World Club Pro Am.

ZululandA drive further up north to Zululand offers golfers a

spectacular opportunity to see some of South Africa’s big game animals in their natural environment. This, coupled with rich cultural history, immaculate golf courses and locally brewed Zulu Blonde beer make it a must for golfers travelling to KZN.

The golf course at Eshowe Hills Country Club, opened in 1907, is one of the oldest clubs in South Africa that is still active on its original site. The course boasts five water features and an incredible boardwalk, which takes golfers and golf carts from tee to green on the 8th hole to a height of 5 m through a spectacular forest canopy.

South CoastThe coastline in this region offers golden swimming

beaches, holiday resorts, and a series of top golf courses, including the groomed impala-studded fairways of San Lameer Country Club. San Lameer is a nature-lover’s paradise and a conservation haven, with over 190 different bird species, plentiful wildlife, and beautiful indigenous flora.

The 18 memorable holes on this course are a dream to play, weaving through open glades, wetlands and forests with the Indian Ocean, once again, as a magnificent backdrop. Designed by Peter Matkovich and Dale Hayes, it is sculpted around some of the last remaining wetland forests on the South Coast, and specifically designed to avoid areas of sensitive vegetation. The course has just been upgraded and the response has been overwhelmingly

positive. It is now, undoubtedly, a top quality sporting venue in South Africa.

“The course is progressing very nicely and looking good. The levels are great and the grass has tightened up and is thriving. The greens have matured, and the course has progressed far beyond what we even hoped for,” remarks Matkovich.

Enjoy a round of golf on the challenging 18-hole championship course or opt for a more relaxed nine holes on the Pitch and Putt course – there is something for everyone!

Drakensberg

Travel inland and you will be blessed with the majestic Drakensberg Mountain range, as well as some of the most beautiful courses in the country. The championship course at Champagne Sports Resort – rated as South Africa’s most beautiful golf course – is the top-rated course in the Berg, and offers players spectacular views of the mountains, as well as an exceptional, world class playing field.

The greens are of the highest quality made with L93 bent-grass, which is great for the region, as they remain green during the harsh, dry winters. The course is challenging and badly misdirected shots are inevitably going to be punished – particularly in the wetlands and at the water holes – but the fairways are wide and bordered by light rough.

This oasis in the beautiful Drakensberg also offers a top class resort with an array of facilities making it extremely popular among golfing enthusiasts, nature lovers and families alike.

What is your favourite part of your job? The flexibility of my working hours. Sometimes you have a ten hour day, other times you are done by 09h30. The only problem is that you end up in traffic on the way home – traffic consisting of people who are only just going to work. I also like working with different colleagues and different passengers.

What do you find most challenging about your job? Getting up at 03h00, especially in winter. Sometimes we also have deal with unhappy passengers due to issues with seat reservations or special meals or families not being able to sit together. The best way to handle this is just to listen and then try to come up with a possible solution. That way there is usually a “happy ending” to the incident.

What would people find surprising about your job? The training we undergo on a regular basis including live fire-fighting, first aid, evacuation drills, and the handling of dangerous goods – all of the things that passengers don’t really think about

until something goes wrong. Fortunately this happens once in a blue moon, but we still need to be prepared for any eventuality.

Have you ever had any funny incidents or encounters onboard? The funniest incidents could never be published. Many times, though, I have been told I should write a book. But I think if I did, I would be fired. Or sued. Or both. Not quite sure in which order!One morning during the breakfast service in my SAA days, an elderly gentleman, who introduced himself to us as “Oupa Smit”, told us that he had left his dentures on his dinner tray. It was a nightmare as we to go through 300-odd dirty dinner trays looking them. Luckily we found them and returned them to Oupa Smit. Ten minutes later another elderly gent came with the same story but we had only found one pair. While clearing the cabin, Oupa Smit gave me a bag of sweet papers and general rubbish he had accumulated during the night. Right on top were his dentures – he was wearing the other gent’s teeth!It took quite a while to convince him that he was wearing the wrong ones as he was adamant that they fitted perfectly. To get them out of his mouth and have him fit his own teeth was (literally) like extracting teeth. When he eventually took them out to try his own ones, the second gent grabbed them, and I have never seen anybody put false teeth into his mouth so fast – scrambled egg and all!

Special Meals Passengers with special dietary requirements are provided for through the following special meals: kosher, halal, Muslim, Hindu, low-fat and vegetarian meals. Orders for special meals should be placed at the time of making flight reservations. The airline requires a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to departure in order to assist with confirmation of requests. Only available on selected flights.

Passengers requiring special attention Requirements for unaccompanied minors (passengers under the age of 12 years) or passengers requiring wheelchairs should be stated at the time of making the reservation. Owing to the size of the cabins on our aircraft types, the airline is not in a position to carry stretcher passengers or incubators.

Cabin baggage SA Express will accept one piece of cabin baggage not exceeding a total dimension of 115cm and 7kg in weight. For safety reasons, cabin baggage must fit into approved stowage spaces: either the overhead luggage bin or under the seat. Health regulations Health regulations at certain airports require that the aircraft cabin be sprayed. The spray is harmless, but if you think it might affect you, please cover your nose and mouth with a handkerchief.

Remain seated As a safety precaution, passengers are requested to remain seated with seatbelts fastened after the aircraft has landed, until the seatbelt sign has been switched off by the captain.

Portable electronic equipment The use of personal

electronic devices (PED’s) will apply to all domestic and regional flights on

the CRJ700/200 and DH8 Q400.

Passengers will be permitted to use PED’s such as cell phones, e-readers and electronic tablets in flight-mode.

Cellular telephones Cellular telephones may be used on the ground while passenger doors are open. Cellular telephones, smartphones or any device with flight mode must be switched off as soon as the cabin doors are closed and when the senior cabin-crew member makes an announcement on the public-address system.

Laptop computers Laptops with CD ROM and DVD drive, handheld calculators, electric shavers and portable personal listening devices may not be used on the ground during taxi but may be used during the flight when the seatbelt signs are switched off and with permission from the captain. Should circumstances dictate otherwise, a public-address announcement cancelling this concession will be made by a crew member.

Prohibited equipment Portable printers, laser pointers, video equipment, CB/AM/FM/FHF/satellite receivers, two-way radios, compact disc and mini-disc players, scanners, remote-controlled toys and power converters are prohibited for use at any time.

I would like to compliment the staff onboard a recent SA Express flight from Bloemfontein to Cape Town. I fly a lot and come from a hospitality background, but Pierre Hemy and Li Marie Deysel absolutely stunned me as well as my the fellow passengers on this flight. They were outstanding; attending to everybody’s needs before we even realised what we needed.

They made the flight enjoyable and I can only hope that you hold onto these two superstars.Great work and keep it up team.

To whom it may concern

I was recently booked on a flight from Walvis Bay to Johannesburg, and then on to Nairobi later that night. My driver totally misjudged the pick-up times though and, as a result, it seemed like it would be unlikely that I would make the flight. I phoned

SA Express at Walvis Bay Airport and was assisted by Michelle. I explained my situation and told her that I would still come to the airport and if the flight had already left, I would then rebook for the next day.

Michelle did everything she could and made it possible for me to get on the flight. I was even happy to pay the rebooking fees as she had to cancel my flight in order to avoid a “no show” and loss of the ticket.

I would like to thank Michelle for going out of her way to assist me and for making the impossible possible.
