Project Background

● Honduras○ Developing country○ Only 2 tier three hospitals

● Infant Mortality○ 34 deaths per 1000 live births○ 52.2% due to waiting on an incubator

● Incubators○ Majority in disrepair or outdated○ Can’t be readily repaired○ Low number results in “baby stacking”

● Primary Customer○ Dr. Alejandro Young

Problem Statement

Who: Babies

What: Being born in critical condition and dying during transport

When: Everyday

Where: Rural areas of Honduras

Why: Lack of proper medical equipment

Page 6: Infant Emergencyedge.rit.edu/edge/P18026/public/Design Review PPT 9-14.ppt · Increased risk of infant switch ups at hospital Anyone can use incubator, therefore uneducated handler

Project Goals and Deliverables

Goal: To repeatedly prolong the lives of critical condition babies from rural areas at an affordable price.

Deliverables:● Design documents (Drawings, BOM, test results)● Working prototype● Technical paper● Poster● “How It’s Made” video

Use Scenario

Page 8: Infant Emergencyedge.rit.edu/edge/P18026/public/Design Review PPT 9-14.ppt · Increased risk of infant switch ups at hospital Anyone can use incubator, therefore uneducated handler

Current State VS Desired State

Current:

● No transportable incubators available○ Current incubators are located in the hospital and are overcrowed with multiple infants

● No reliable method of transportation○ Ambulances

■ Packed with a variety of people who all require medical attention (no priority system)○ Public Bus

■ Crammed with many people, no direct route to hosiptal

Desired:

● Multiple transportable incubators located at various outposts for emergency use● Ambulance that only transports incubators for infant use

Benefits

Stakeholders:

● Infants● Parents● Doctors● Hospitals

Stakeholder use:

● Used by stakeholders by placing at outposts to be used when necessary/required

Benefits:

● Reduction of infant mortality rate● Higher quality of care● Rapid response rate for infants in need of incubators

Page 10: Infant Emergencyedge.rit.edu/edge/P18026/public/Design Review PPT 9-14.ppt · Increased risk of infant switch ups at hospital Anyone can use incubator, therefore uneducated handler

Negatives

● Hospitals become overcrowded with incoming infants requiring incubators● Infants risk dying of other causes once in hospital● Confidentiality rate of patients decreases due to overcrowding● Increased risk of infant switch ups at hospital● Anyone can use incubator, therefore uneducated handler risks improper use● Expecting someone to have medical knowledge - if not can cause more damage than help● Families not able to provide for larger family size

Limits of negatives:

● To combat overcrowding [main negative], hospitals can retain incubator/not return to outposts until space is cleared up

Benchmarking

TransNANO II:● Runs off of car battery● 1 person handling● Temp controls● Air circulation● Fits in small cars

TINC 101:● 3 hr battery life● Can plug into cars● 2 person handling● Modern medical equipment● Temp controls● Designed for ambulance use

MOM:● Runs off of car battery with

back up rechargeable battery● 1 person handling (uninflated)● Temp controls● Air circulation● Collapsible/inflatable

Risks Involved

Page 15: Infant Emergencyedge.rit.edu/edge/P18026/public/Design Review PPT 9-14.ppt · Increased risk of infant switch ups at hospital Anyone can use incubator, therefore uneducated handler

Project PlanObjective:

● Create a working prototype

Process:

● Responsibilities divided up amongst members● Create subsystems [electrical, mechanical, biomedical, etc]● Design & iteration [multiple times]● Combine subsystems into working prototype

Project Plan

Page 17: Infant Emergencyedge.rit.edu/edge/P18026/public/Design Review PPT 9-14.ppt · Increased risk of infant switch ups at hospital Anyone can use incubator, therefore uneducated handler

Conclusion

High infant mortality rate due to gap in

care

Our Project - A low cost

transportable neonatal incubator

Lower infant

mortality rate
