1.0 Introduction The UK cleaning industry is currently experiencing rapid changes in the way cleaning services are structured and organised, particularly with newly-emerged contract

cleaning, specialised services, new technology, and the influences of European markets. The UK’s Department of Trade and Industry’s initiatives to establish

standards for cleaning, together with the development of new skills, is driving the introduction of higher level training qualifications.

The University of Northampton in collaboration with the British Institute for Cleaning Science (BICS) have developed a University Certificate in Infection Control (UCIC).

The course addresses the academic and vocational training needs of future managers and supervisors response for delivering a safe and hygienic environment for individuals and businesses whether in the private sector such as the food

production industry or the public sector such as hospitals.

The University Certificate in Infection Control looks at the scientific concepts

underpinning the production and maintenance of hygienic environment as well as the identification and control of hazards in order to fully understand the reasons why particular strategies and conventions need to be followed so as to be better able to

make decisions in a given situation. Such knowledge will allow informed decisions to be made regarding choice of procedures and materials in the appropriate situation.

2.0 Course Description

The University Certificate in Infection Control (UCIC) is an undergraduate level one-

year part-time course. It is suitable for experienced cleaning managers, hygiene and infection control managers or suitably qualified/experienced people aspiring to a management position.

UCIC promotes the practical application of scientific principles and management

knowledge and principles to help managers meet everyday issues, arising in both public and private sector cleaning organisations.

UCIC has also been designed to offer flexibility in terms of both where and when the learning takes place.

3.0 Course Aims

Candidates who achieve the University Certificate will have:

o developed knowledge, and understanding of scientific facts, terms, methods,

concepts, principles and relationships.

o a sound scientific background for those who intend to undertake further academic study in this or a related field.

o developed the skills required to manage environmental cleaning related issues in a variety of cleaning contexts.

Page 9: infect cert course guide Ver A January 2015 · The University Certificate in Infection Control (UCIC) is an undergraduate level one-year part-time course. It is suitable for experienced

University Certificate in Infection Control (DL) – Course Guide

5

At the end of the course candidates will be more confident in their ability and have

acquired skills to improve both their own and their organisation’s performance by being more analytical and reasoned decision makers.

4.0 Course Structure The course comprises the following three Modules:

o Hygiene & Health

o Cleaning Science o Biological & Other Hazards in the Workplace

Although clearly related, each Module is a self-contained unit of study in the sense

that they address a set of specific themes, and you are systematically assessed on each of these. Through the study of each module, which is assessed under a

common “framework”, you are not only gaining knowledge, but building on it in a sustained way. The Modules are worth 20 credits at level 4 or 5 and are weighted as 200 learning hours (teaching, learning and assessment);

You will work your way through each module and then complete all aspects of

assessment associated with it, then progress on to the next. 4.1 Duration of Study

The course lasts one year. You will be expected to start and finish a Module in each

of the three academic terms which as far as the University Certificate is concerned start in January, May and September. Irrespective of your start date the Modules

will be studied in the following order:

o Hygiene & Health

o Cleaning Science o Biological & Other Hazards in the Workplace

4.2 Method of Study

The course is delivered through a series of Learning Packages (LPs). In the same way that a book is divided into thematic chapters, making it easier to read, each module consists of an appropriate number of thematic LPs.

4.3 Learning Packages

Each LP contains comprehensive self-contained study sessions, each containing the fundamentals of theory and application as regards the principles and concepts, processes and practice which are essential for a comprehensive understanding of

aspects of Infection Control covered in the course.

Where appropriate, the LPs also include a variety of magazine articles and other reference materials as well as further reading lists. Each module contains a series of self-assessment questions (SAQs) and answers.

4.4 Northampton Integrated Learning Environment (NILE

In addition to learning packages, Northampton Integrated Learning Environment

(NILE) is an online environment containing a range of resources. This is a place

Page 10: infect cert course guide Ver A January 2015 · The University Certificate in Infection Control (UCIC) is an undergraduate level one-year part-time course. It is suitable for experienced

where the Course Tutors provide additional course materials, web links and further

reading resources. Nile also provides a forum where you can meet and chat with other students.

Features that you will find particularly useful include:

• Posting and replying to messages in the 'Discussion Forum' - useful for meeting your peers, generating group discussion or for exchanging ideas

• External links to useful web resources • View course guides and forthcoming module guides • Submission of assignments

• Feedback on assignments • Additional reading material

10.0 Course Assessment

Modules are assessed by a mixture of Assessed Written Module Assignments (AWMAs) and Time Constrained Assignments (TCAs). Further details concerning

assessments are given in the Module Guides.

10.1 Assignment Submission

All students are expected to submit their assignments electronically. For each

module you take there will be an associated area on NILE. Each of the module areas on NILE will contain a ‘submit your work’ space. It is here that you upload your

written assignments and TCA’s.

You will normally have until 23:59 (GMT) on the day of submission to submit your work. It is important to note that after 17:00 (GMT) there is unlikely to be any

support if you run into technical difficulties. It is therefore advisable to submit when you know you can get help. Please ensure you have adequate time to submit before the deadline.

Once the assignment has been graded you will be able to access the marked

assignment through ‘Feedback and grades’. Grading is also done electronically where marking tutors provide comments on your script along with overall feedback and the assignment grade.

All e-copies must be sent by 11:59pm of the deadline day.

10.2 Assessed Written Module Assignment (AWMAs)

Assessed Written Module Assignments (AWMAs) are, in general, work based and designed to develop skills in problem solving, communication and to apply skills

to real or simulated work situations. AWMAs can take a wide variety of forms. Some involve questions for which short one or two sentence responses are sufficient.

Others ask for case studies or detailed discussion of complex theories and concepts or data/information analysis and interpretation. Course Tutors provide comprehensive comments to your assignments.

Each AWMA should have the appropriate cover sheet attached. This should be completed and contain your name, student number, the AWMA completion date and name of the marking tutor.

10.3 Time Constrained Assignments (TCAs)

Time Constrained Assignments will take a variety of forms, from 60-90 minute ‘tests’ to a series of wide ranging questions testing knowledge, understanding,

application and interpretation which must be completed within a specified period of time (up to 10 days). The nature of the questions will be dependent upon the

outcomes for a Module, and will provide a measure of student progress and enhance the validity of the course provision.

Time Constrained Assignments (TCAs) play a significant role in the overall assessment of over half of the Modules of the course. You MUST indicate your wish

to sit a TCA to the Module Tutor prior to date of the assignment stating how you intend to receive the assignment, giving the appropriate details.

On the day of the assignment, the TCA will be e-mailed. You must then acknowledge that you have received the TCA and then upload your answers through

the submission point on NILE.

10.4 Assessment Strategy

A summary of Module Assessment Strategies are provided in Tables 11.1.

10.5 Mitigating Circumstances

Mitigating circumstances are defined as ‘serious and acute problems or events

beyond a student’s control, which have adversely affected performance in, or prevented completion of, assessments’. Mitigating circumstances can be considered as grounds for:

• Extending coursework deadlines;

• Deferring coursework and examination assessments; • Retaking coursework and examination assessments.

Such circumstances cannot, however, be considered as grounds for adjusting the marks/grades awarded for assessments already completed.

Please contact the course leader if you are unable to meet the deadline for course assessments. This has to be undertaken prior to the last submission date for the

piece(s) of assessment in question.

Further information about mitigating circumstances is included in the Student Handbook. A copy is included on the resource cd. You can also access mitigating circumstances guidance and forms at:

http://www.northampton.ac.uk/about-us/governance-and-

management/university-policies-procedures-and-regulations

10.6 Assessment Guidelines

1. Assessment strategy is clearly related to the Modules stated learning outcomes in terms of subject-specific skill, knowledge and understanding.

2. The overall grade for a module is derived from consideration of all assessed work undertaken, with each piece weighted according to its units of assessment.

3. AWMAs and TCAs will be returned to you with a cover sheet providing

commentary and indication (e.g. in grid form) of how a piece of work scores in

relation to Module assessment criteria.

10.7 Assessment Grading

In order to pass a given Module an individual must meet the required standards set out for the Module. Appendix II contains the assessment grading criteria upon

which AWMAs and TCAs will be assessed. The overall grade for a Module is derived from consideration of all assessed work undertaken.

10.8 Course Regulations

The rules and regulations concerned with the course are given in Appendix II. 10.9 Award

Page 17: infect cert course guide Ver A January 2015 · The University Certificate in Infection Control (UCIC) is an undergraduate level one-year part-time course. It is suitable for experienced

University Certificate in Infection Control (DL) – Course Guide

13

In order to gain the University Certificate in Infection Control, all three (3) Modules must be successfully completed.

10.10 Plagiarism/Copying/Cheating All work that you submit for assessment purposes must be your own. If you copy

the work of others, or incorporate the work of others into your own submission and present it as if it is your own work, this is called plagiarism. It is a serious offence

and regarded by The University of Northampton as cheating. If the tutors grading your work suspect that it is plagiarised, they will instigate formal procedures. The University also uses computer software designed to detect plagiarism.

Electronic submission is via a software package called Turnitin. Turnitin checks a

wide range of databases/ websites for similarities between your submission and the information held in these databases, including assignments submitted by other students at the University of Northampton and student assignments at other

universities. An originality report is then produced that can be checked to ensure the main body of your work has been suitably reworded (paraphrased). You will then be

able to access and review your originality report to ensure there are no areas that need further paraphrasing. You should be able to submit your assignment multiple times up until the deadline date. We will also be able to access your originality report

when marking your assignments. It is therefore extremely important that the work you submit is paraphrased and where appropriate referenced using the Harvard

system.

Your University of Northampton Student Code includes full details of these procedures, together with the penalties (including termination of your course) which

may be applied and you are strongly advised to read them carefully. You need to take careful note of the seriousness with which this offence is regarded and resolve to follow carefully the instructions for citations and referencing in all your work.

11.0 Course Operation

Individuals will study three Modules over a calendar year, ie one per academic term.

11.1 Additional Course Related Material In addition to these Guidance Notes an individual will also receive the following

information:

• Study Skills Guide • Learning Packs with Module Guides • Library Card

• CD-ROM (course information, IT services and library information) • Username and password for access to:

- NILE (the Virtual Learning Environment, or VLE at The University of Northampton)

- Student e-mail account

11.2 Course Tutors

Page 18: infect cert course guide Ver A January 2015 · The University Certificate in Infection Control (UCIC) is an undergraduate level one-year part-time course. It is suitable for experienced

University Certificate Infection Control (DL) – Course Guide

14

Each individual will be assigned a Personal Tutor, who should contact each new

recruit within two weeks of commencing the course, to introduce themselves.

You should contact your tutor if you are not contacted within this timescale, and thereafter maintain regular contact with him/her by email, letter or telephone at least every 6 to 8 weeks.

11.3 Learning Packs The LP for the first Module along with the first AWMA will be sent out following your

registration.

You are obliged to contact your allotted Personal Tutor on a regular basis (once per four to six weeks) to discuss your progress.

11.4 Assessed Written Module Assignments

Each AWMA will have a specific hand-in date. You should refer to your module guide and assignment briefs for specific dates. You will almost certainly require some form of diary to record these dates and help you in your planning to ensure that you meet

the deadline dates. It will also provide you with the opportunity to look for guidance and support from module tutors and support team when undertaking assignments.

Published deadlines are the last hand-in dates, but this does not mean that you should aim to submit assignments on the last hand-in date. You should endeavour

to submit these prior to this last submission date. You will need to set your own deadlines and this is where your diary will find best use i.e. you can submit any of

the assignments earlier if you wish. On completion of all assignments you can then undertake the module Time

Constrained Assignment (TCA).

11.5 Time Constrained Assignments

TCAs will take either a short form or long form:

• short form, or 2 - 6 hour; or • long form, or 2 - 10 days

In order to complete the Time Constrained Assignments (TCAs) you MUST indicate your wish to sit a TCA by sending an e-mail to the Course Support Team prior to

date of the assignment.

On the date of the assignment, the TCA will be e-mailed to you at the prearranged time. You must then acknowledge that you have received the e-mail within 30

minutes. If no acknowledgement is received within 30 minutes of sending out the TCA via e-mail, then the TCA will be deemed null and void. You may be able to

arrange with tutors another suitable time that day for the TCA to be taken.

The student is required to retake assessment for the Module as a second attempt following initial failure.

Defer:

The student is required to retake assessment for the Module as if for the first time following non-completion for

initial failure, as a result of extenuating circumstances.

Repeat:

The student is required to retake a failed module and completing all assessments afresh.

Coursework:

All Assessed Written Module Assignments (AWMAs) are deemed as Coursework

Examinations:

All Time Constrained Assignments (TCAs) are deemed as Examinations

12.2 Assessment Regulations The following assessment regulations will be applied. Namely:

Requirements to pass a module

1. Each Module contains one or more items of assessment. These together with the

corresponding weightings are defined in the Module Guides.

2. If you achieve a fail grade (F+, F, F- or G) for an item of assessment, you are

permitted a second opportunity at the item, usually involving an alternative piece of work. The maximum grade you can achieve for a second attempt is D-.

3. If you are affected by external circumstances and are permitted to defer your

assessment by the mitigating circumstances panel, your grade for the deferred work in not limited to D-, you are given the full grade that the work merits.

4. There is a fixed schedule for these second attempt or deferred deadlines. You

will be advised of the new submission date for a referral or deferral. 5. These are the only opportunities to improve on a failed grade.

6. But you do not necessarily have to achieve a pass grade in every item of

assessment: to pass a module you need to achieve a grade of D- or better overall for that module

Coursework and TCAs

1. All coursework is required to be submitted by the due deadline date. 2. Where you cannot meet the deadline due to illness or other circumstances

beyond your control you may seek an extension to the deadline from the Module Tutor – maximum of two weeks. Such extensions should normally be sought

no later than two days before the deadline. You should provide documentary

Page 21: infect cert course guide Ver A January 2015 · The University Certificate in Infection Control (UCIC) is an undergraduate level one-year part-time course. It is suitable for experienced

University Certificate in Infection Control (DL) – Course Guide

17

evidence to support the request for an extension.

3. Where a piece of work is submitted one week after the deadline and you have

not gained an extension to the deadline as described above, the maximum grade that can be given to the item of assessment will be D-.

4. Where an item of assessment is submitted more than one week after the deadline and you have not gained an extension to the deadline as described

above, the item will receive a grade of G (non-submission). 5. You may not repeat or be referred in an item of assessment or a Module already

passed to improve a mark.

Crediting Modules 1. All Modules passed outright will be credited to the student.

2. If you have been awarded exemptions from Modules at the point of admission

that will be encompassed by the term “credit” for the purposes of these regulations.

Requirement for the University Certificate

In order to qualify for the University Certificate in Infection Control you need to have passed all three Modules. The University Certificate is not split into classifications, although will contain overall Module grades.

APPENDIX I – Sequence of Events & Course Operation

Along with this Course Handbook you should also receive: • Study Skills Guide;

• Name and contact details of your Personal Tutor

It is essential that you read and understand the vast amount of information included in the above literature and that you start to complete the Learning & Academic Profile.

You should contact your Personal Tutor once you have digested all this information,

to discuss any aspects of the course that you do not fully understand. You will be sent the following information for each Module you are studying:

• Module Guide(s); • Module Learning Material(s) (MLMs); and

• Assessed Written Module Assignment(s) (AWMAs). Read the Guides, MLMs and AWMAs carefully and note down deadline dates for

AWMAs.

Assessed Written Module Assignments (AWMAs)

All Module assessment includes at least one Assessed Written Module Assignment. These can take a variety of forms from short one or two sentence responses, to a

series of questions, through to data analysis and interpretation. These are given to you along with the appropriate Module Learning Material. It is essential that you

submit your assignments by the deadline date given in the Module Guide. Prior to submission of your AWMAs for grading please ensure that:

• you have attempted all parts of the AWMA;

• your name and student number are clearly written on your assignment; and • you have completed the Assignment Pro-forma and have signed the Declaration

Form for each AWMA to be submitted and have attached them to the

assignment.

It is important with a Distance Learning study programme that you maintain regular contact (every 3-4 weeks) with your Personal Tutor. It is recommended that you contact your Personal Tutor at least every month, even if is just to say that due to

personal/work commitments that you have made little or no progress since your previous contact. Failure to maintain regular contact could lead to eventual

termination from the study programme. Your Personal Tutor as well as all Course Tutors are there to help and advise you – so use them!

Time Constrained Assignments (TCAs)

The assessment regime all Modules require you to undertake a Time Constrained Assignment (TCA). These can only be undertaken when all AWMAs for a given

Module have been successfully completed. The dates for the TCAs will be given in the Module Guides.

APPENDIX II – Assessment Grading Criteria GRADE CRITERIA: HE Credit level 4

HE Credit level 4

An outstanding Distinction

A+ 80-100 Work which fulfils all the criteria of the grade below, but at an exceptional standard

A very strong Distinction

A 75-79 Work of distinguished quality which is based on a rigorous and broad knowledge base, and demonstrating sustained ability to analyse, synthesise, evaluate and interpret concepts, principles and data within field of study, using defined principles, techniques and/or standard formats and applications. This will form the basis for the development of authoritative arguments and judgements through application appropriate to the field of study/ assessment task. There will be strong evidence of competence across a range of specialised skills using them to plan and develop and evaluate problems solving strategies, and of the capability to operate autonomously with guidance in varied structured contexts, and communicate outputs effectively, accurately and reliably.

A clear Distinction A- 70-74 Work of very good quality which displays most but not all of the criteria for the grade above. .

A Distinction B+ 67-69 Work which clearly fulfils the criteria for the grade below, but shows a greater degree of capability in relevant intellectual/subject/key skills.

A very strong Merit B 63-66 Work of commendable quality based on a strong factual/conceptual knowledge base for the field of study, including an assured grasp of concepts and principles, together with effective deployment of skills relevant to the discipline and assessment task. There will be clear evidence of analysis, synthesis, evaluation and application, and the ability to work effectively within defined guidelines to meet defined objectives. There will be consistent evidence of capability in all relevant subject based and key skills, including the ability to self-evaluate and work autonomously and to use effectively specified standard techniques in appropriate contexts.

A strong Merit B- 60-62 Work of good quality which contains most, but not all of the characteristics of the grade above.

A clear Merit C+ 57-59 Work which clearly fulfils all the criteria of the grade below, but shows a greater degree of capability in relevant intellectual/subject/key skills.

A Merit C 53-56 Work of sound quality based on a firm factual/ conceptual knowledge base for the field of study, demonstrating a good grasp of relevant principles/concepts, together with the ability to organise and communicate effectively. The work may be rather standard, but will be mostly accurate and provide some evidence of the ability to analyse, synthesise, evaluate and apply standard methods/techniques, under guidance. There will be no serious omissions or inaccuracies. There will be good evidence of ability to take responsibility for own learning, to operate with limited autonomy in predictable defined contexts, selecting and using relevant techniques, and to demonstrate competence in relevant key skills.

A very strong Pass C- 50-52 Work of capable quality which contains some of the characteristics of grade above

A strong Pass D+ 47-49 Work of satisfactory quality demonstrating a reliable knowledge base and evidence of developed key skills and/or subject based skills, but still containing limited evidence of analysis, synthesis, evaluation or application.

Page 30: infect cert course guide Ver A January 2015 · The University Certificate in Infection Control (UCIC) is an undergraduate level one-year part-time course. It is suitable for experienced

University Certificate Infection Control (DL) – Course Guide

26

A Pass D 43-46 Work of broadly satisfactory quality covering adequately the factual and/or conceptual knowledge base of the field of study and appropriately presented and organised, but is primarily descriptive or derivative, with only occasional evidence of analysis, synthesis, evaluation or application. There may be some misunderstanding of key concepts/principles and limitations in the ability to select relevant material or techniques and/or in communication or other relevant skills, so that the work may include some errors, omissions or irrelevancies. There will be evidence of ability to operate with limited autonomy in predictable defined contexts, using standard techniques, and to meet threshold standards in relevant key skills.

A bare Pass D- 40-42 Work of bare pass standard demonstrating some familiarity with and grasp of a factual/conceptual knowledge base for the field of study, together with evidence of some ability to employ specialist skills to solve problems within area of study, but only just meeting threshold standards in eg evaluation and interpretation of data and information, reasoning and soundness of judgement, communication, application, or quality of outputs. Work may be characterised by some significant errors, omissions or problems, but there will be sufficient evidence of development and competence to operate in specified contexts taking responsibility for the nature and quality of outputs.

A marginal Fail

F+ 35-39 Work which indicates some evidence of engagement with area of study in relation to acquisition of knowledge and understanding of concepts and principles, and of specialist skills, but which is essentially misinterpreted, misapplied and/or contains some significant omission or misunderstanding, or otherwise just fails to meet threshold standards in eg communication, application or quality of outputs

A Fail

F 20-34 Work that falls well short of the threshold standards in relation to one or more of knowledge, intellectual, subject based or key skills. It may address the assessment task to some extent, or include evidence of successful engagement with some of the subject matter, but such satisfactory characteristics will be clearly outweighed by major deficiencies across remaining areas.

A comprehensive Fail

F- 5-19 Work of poor quality which is based on only minimal understanding, application or effort. It will offer only very limited evidence of familiarity with knowledge or skills appropriate to the field of study or task and/or demonstrate inadequate capability in key skills essential to the task concerned.

Non-submission/Nil attempt

G 0-4 Nothing presented

GRADE CRITERIA: Credit level 5

HE Credit level 5

An outstanding Distinction

A+ 80-100 Work which fulfils all the criteria of the grade below, but at an exceptional standard

A very strong Distinction

A 75-79 Work of distinguished quality which is based on a rigorous and detailed knowledge base, including major theories of the discipline(s) and awareness of the variety of ideas, contexts and frameworks and the wider implications. Work will demonstrate sustained ability to analyse, synthesise, evaluate and interpret concepts, principles and data within field of study in a considered manner, as well as to develop authoritative arguments and judgements through application appropriate to the field of study/ assessment task. There will be strong evidence of competence across a range of specialised skills using them to plan and develop and evaluate problems solving strategies, to challenge received opinion and develop own judgements. Clear evidence of capability to operate autonomously with minimal guidance in situations of varying complexity and predictability, but within defined guidelines will be demonstrated. Outputs will be communicated effectively, accurately and reliably.

A clear Distinction A- 70-74 Work of very good quality which displays most but not all of the criteria for the grade above.

A Distinction

B+ 67-69 Work which clearly fulfils the criteria for the grade below, but shows a greater degree of capability in relevant intellectual/subject/key skills.

A very strong Merit

B 63-66 Work of commendable quality based on a strong detailed knowledge base for the field of study, including an assured grasp of concepts, principles and major theories, together with effective deployment of skills relevant to the discipline and assessment task. There will be evidence of considered analysis, synthesis, evaluation and application, and the ability to work effectively with minimum direction to meet defined objectives and develop own judgements. There will be consistent evidence of capability in all relevant subject based and key skills, including the ability to self-evaluate and work autonomously with minimal direction to use effectively a range of techniques in situations of varying complexity and predictability

A strong merit

B- 60-62 Work of good quality which contains most, but not all of the characteristics of the grade above.

A clear Merit C+ 57-59 Work which clearly fulfils all the criteria of the grade below, but shows a greater degree of capability in relevant intellectual/subject/key skills.

A Merit C 53-56 Work of sound quality based on a firm factual/ conceptual knowledge base for the field of study, including a good grasp of relevant theories, together with the ability to organise and communicate effectively. The work may be rather standard and limited in its theoretical grasp, but will be mostly accurate and provide some evidence of the ability to analyse, synthesise, evaluate and apply standard methods/techniques, with minimal guidance. There will be no serious omissions or inaccuracies. There will be good evidence of ability to take responsibility for own learning, some capability to challenge received opinion and form own judgements. Evidence of the ability to operate with increased autonomy in situations of varying complexity and predictability, selecting and applying appropriate techniques will be demonstrated within limits. There will be competence in relevant key skills.

A very strong Pass C- 50-52 Work of capable quality which contains some of the characteristics of grade above.

There will be evidence of ability to operate with some autonomy in predictable contexts, but less evidence of ability to operate in more complex or unpredictable situations. However, there will be evidence of ability to use a variety of standard techniques, and to meet threshold standards in relevant key skills.

A bare Pass D- 40-42 Work of bare pass standard demonstrating some familiarity with and grasp of a factual/conceptual and theoretical knowledge base for the field of study, together with evidence of some ability to employ specialist skills to solve problems within area of study, but only just meeting threshold standards in eg evaluation and interpretation of data and information, reasoning and soundness of judgement, communication, application, or quality of outputs. APPENDIX III – Glossary Of Terms ACCREDITATION OF PRIOR (EXPERIENTIAL) LEARNING (APL and APEL)

Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) and Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) has long been accepted, in both Higher and Further Education (HE and FE) as a way for students to gain entry to courses. They are designed to take account of

conventional and non-conventional learning and experiences between leaving school and starting out on a career pathway. It considers these in support of applications

to courses of education and training enabling credit to be given for such learning and experience (See CATS Credits below).

ASSESSED WRITTEN MODULE ASSIGNMENT (AWMA) Assessed Written Module Assignments are designed to encourage you to find out

things for yourself, develop skills in problem solving, communication and to enable them to apply skills to real or simulated work situations. They can take a wide variety of forms from short one or two sentence responses to a series of questions

to Case Studies and from detailed discussion of complex theories and concepts through to data/information analysis and interpretation.

CATS CREDITS All the University's awards are credit-rated under the National Credit Accumulation

and Transfer Scheme. This means that students who terminate their study before achieving a complete award collect credit for the work which they have successfully

completed. If and when they resume their studies they may be able to carry forward the credits from their previous study.

COURSE ASSESSMENT Modules are assessed by a mixture of AWMAs and Time Constrained Assignments

(TCAs). Details concerning assessments are given in the Module Guides. COURSE LEADER

The Course Leader is responsible for the smooth operation of a particular course. Queries regarding the course that cannot be answered by module tutors, personal

tutors or dissertation tutors should be directed to the course leader. For the University Certificate in Infection Control, the course leader is Louise Maxwell.

DEADLINE DATE The date by which a piece of course work (TCA, AWMA) has to be submitted for

grading. KEY SKILLS

Key (transferable) skills are now internationally recognised in higher education and highly valued by employers. There is considerable agreement about the capabilities

which make people effective, and is now acknowledged that over one half of all graduates enter employment which is not directly related to the subject(s) studied. Rather, such employment demands a range of intellectual, social, organisational and

personal skills. Students who can demonstrate that they have key skills are likely to be advantaged in the employment market.

Key skills are not, however, valued just for their relevance to employment; such skills are essential to effective learning, personal and academic development. An

awareness of strengths and limitations is fundamental to the advancement of individual potential and the capabilities for life-long learning.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Learning objectives describe what someone will know or be able to do as a result of learning.

LEARNING OUTCOMES Learning outcomes specify what should have been achieved if a student has

satisfactorily completed the course content. The virtue of a learning outcome approach is clarity:

• students know what is expected of them; • staff are clear about what is to be assessed; and

• employers know what has been achieved.

LEARNING PACKAGES (LPs) An LP contains essential study material in the form of the module text, self-assessment questions (SAQs) and background reading material. A LP forms the

backbone of the module being studied.

MODULE TUTOR Module Tutors are responsible for a particular module, answering queries concerning the module and grading of assignments.

PERSONAL TUTOR

Personal tutors will, on an individual basis, fulfil an academic guidance as well as pastoral and personal counselling role for you throughout the degree programme. Personal tutors are also directly involved in the Student Profiling System, and hence

provide support for the development of key skills.

SELF ASSESSMENT QUESTIONS (SAQ’s) At intervals throughout the text, students are presented with self-assessment questions. To answer these questions, students will need to utilize the information

already presented in the section. These questions will help students assess their understanding of the material. Answers are presented in a separate section at the

end of the main text. TIME CONSTRAINED ASSIGNMENT (TCA)

TCAs can take a variety of forms, from 1-3 hour ‘tests’, to a series of wide ranging questions testing knowledge, understanding, application and interpretation which

must be completed within a specified period of time. The nature of the questions will be dependent upon the outcomes for a Module, and provide a measure of student progress and enhance the validity of the course provision.
