Inferring About Character:

Getting To Know Percy

Chapters 1 and 2

Entrance TicketComprehension Quiz on Chapter 2;

“Three Old Ladies Knit the Socks of Death”

Unpacking the Learning Targets

Learning Targets I can make inferences about Percy

using evidence from the text.

I can use context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words in Chapters 1 & 2 of The Lightening Thief.

I can cite evidence from the text when answering questions and discussing Percy’s character in The Lightening Thief.

I can follow our Triad Talk expectations when I participate in a discussion.

Think Pair Share

What do you remember about the word inference or what does it mean to infer?

Making Inferences about Characters,

Revisiting Chapter 1 Authors use many methods to learn about

characters: direct and indirect One of the best ways to make inferences

about a character is to see how they respond to challenges they face.

Read Aloud: Turn to page 3

Think-Pair-ShareWhat is the challenge Percy is facing in this scene? How does he respond to that challenge?

Close Read of of Pages 16-18: Percy Gets Expelled

Get into Triads Reading closely means reading a text

multiple times for understanding, important details, and to answer questions from the text.

Read aloud: pg 16 “The freak weather…” With your Triads discuss what the “gist” of

this section of the text is.

Inferring About Character:Challenges and Response in

Chapter 2 Using the passage that you just reread

and discussed with your Triad, zoom in and look for important details in the text that show the challenges Percy is facing and how he responds to those challenges.

Chapter 2Pg Challenge Response I can infer

that3 Nancy Bobofit was

harassing Grover on the bus.

“Nancy Bobofit was throwing wads of sandwich that stuck in his curly brown hair.”

Percy wants to defend Grover by standing up to Nancy.

“’That’s it.’ I started to get up, but Grover pulled me back to my seat.”

Percy is a good friend and doesn’t like to see people being bullied.

17 Percy gets expelled from Yancy.“The headmaster sent my mom a letter…”

He said I am homesick.I will miss Grover“And yet there were things …”

He doesn’t care about leaving, but he cares about his friends. He has a heart.

Think-Pair-Share: Vocabulary

Pg 17 quote: “I started feeling cranky and irritable most of the time.”

Use context clues to help define the word “irritable.” In your Triads, discuss which word in that sentence helps you to define irritable.

Another way: find the root word and the suffix Irrate and able: able to be irritated Pg 19 “’But he may not have time. The summer soltice

deadline---’” Pg 20 “ Somewhere in the hallway, Mr. Bunner spoke.

‘Nothing,’ he murmured. ‘My nerves haven’t been right since the winter solstice.’”

Making Inferences In your Triads complete the third column,

“I can infer…” Use Triad Talk expectations

Homework Do a “first draft” read of Chapter 3 Purpose: What does Percy think about in this chapter? What do we learn about him based on these thoughts?

Use evidence flags to mark specific passages in the text to discuss with your triad. Use them to keep track of your thinking,

Closing Exit Ticket: How has the author, Rick

Riordan, helped us to get to know Percy so far in The Lightening Thief?

Use evidence from the text to support your thinking,
