Electrical drive systems play a key role in energy savings. They account or

two-thirds o electrical energy consumed in industry and they are a central

component o automation systems. There are two distinct groups in the industrial

drive technology. The irst group includes electrically driven machines requiring

position control. This group includes, or example, machine tools, measuring

machines and packaging machines where precision in movement is required. The

second group covers all applications where a luid is moved by pumps and ans.

Here variable speed drives allow adjusting the low to the needs o the process.

Compared to classic methods o low control like throttling and bypassing,

electronic speed control signiicantly increases the overall eiciency. Furthermore

the use o an inverter enables the application o more eicient motor technology

like permanent magnet synchronous motors and reluctance motors. Today such

kind o drives can be implemented in a power range rom Watts up to Megawatts.

Nearly all static converters or electrical drives used today employ a combination

o Input rectiier, DC-link and Output inverter. I no regeneration system is

required or the electrical drive, the most competitive semiconductor

components or the input rectiier are bipolar thyristors and/or diodes oered

in various topologies, such as complete six pack modules, hal bridge modules

or single modules. In high power electrical drives the input rectiier consists

o thyristors and/or diodes in press pack housings. I regeneration is required,

an active ront end can be designed using IGBT modules. In low power range,

where power actor correction is mandatory in some applications, PFC (Power

actor correction) circuits can be designed using disccrete IGBTs and diodes or

dedicated modules.

RC-Drives IGBT technology has been developed by Inineon as a cost optimized

solution or sensitive consumer drives market. This basic technology provides

outstanding perormance or permanent magnet synchronous and brushless DC

motor drives.

A new version o the RC-Drives Fast IGBT was developed speciically or low

power motor drive consumer market: the IGBT and diode losses are optimized to

reduce the inverter losses at switching requencies o 18~30 kHz. RC-Drives Fast

enables high eiciency designs or inverters above 16 kHz to reduce the audible

noise to absolutely silent level.

The world amous TRENCHSTOP technology reduces saturation voltages to

intrinsically very low level, well below the values oered by competing standard

NPT IGBTs. The technology progress lowers down the voltage drop o IGBT chip

giving higher device eiciency, whilst Inineons HighSpeed 3 amily provides

the best compromise between switching and conduction losses
