ourPROGRAMS

THE FESTIVALEach year, the VCBF presents a three-day festival on the campus of Longwood University. Comprised of two field trip days, and one family day, the festival welcomes more than 6,000 children annually, all free of charge. With presentations and workshops by acclaimed and award-winning authors and illustrators, innovative technology programming, in-depth panel, special sessions for librarians and teachers, and more, the VCBF provides a singular and memorable experience for all who attend.

AUTHOR VISITSFor schools that are too far away to attend the VCBF, we are able to provide author visits and other programs throughout the year, free of charge.

BOOK DISTRIBUTIONThe VCBF distributes thousands of free books to area children each year. Through our holiday parade programs, we are able to reach a broad population. Additionally, the VCBF has established a library at the Piedmont Juvenile Detention Center, where we also provide a book to each child upon their leaving the Center. The VCBF also provides books to Madeline’s House battered women’s shelter homes, and is working to establish partnerships with FACES Food Pantry, and area Head Start programs.

READ FARMVILLEREAD FARMVILLE is the VCBF’s pop-up library, created to foster a stronger culture of learning, starting at street level. It provides a place to gather around books and learning experiences. READ is formed by three elements: a structure, a collection and a team. The structure is based on a system of open-faced cubes that can installed in different configurations and provide space for 10-15 books. The collection, organized into modules adaptable to different locations and communities, consists of new and used books donated to the VCBF. The team is made by educators, librarians and other volunteers.

ATTENDANCEIn 2014, our first festival drew 1,500 students from the immediate area surrounding Farmville. In 2015, our second year, the number of students attending doubled, and Longwood University asked us to add a third day to the festival to accommodate more field trips. Now able to serve more than 6,000 annually at the festival, the VCBF has become the premiere children's literature event on the east coast.

FUNDINGAs the VCBF grows, so does the need for funding to offer programs to Virginia’s children. Like any responsible non-profit, our aim is to not just meet our annual budgetary needs, but to carry money from year to year. Our donor base is constantly expanding, with new donors coming on board each year, we apply for applicable grants, and we continue to develop relationships with business and industry to sponsor the VCBF in support of their communities.
