WINTER 2018 Art Class & Workshop Schedule Drawing, Painting, Ipad for Artists SA 1 SEASONAL ABSTRACTION Tom Glover, 10 Weeks Monday 9 – 12 January 29 – April 2 Tuuition $300 We will explore the depths of winter through abstraction and follow the season right into spring. Work will come from each student's observations through each week, and source material can be from photos, sketches and memories. From your observations we will apply various techniques and ideas that come from abstract painting and abstract thought. Winter qualities of cold, wind, snow (etc.) will be used to create work. As we move into spring we will investigate our response to the warming, the melting, the growing and blooming of spring. Canvases will likely become more colorful, warmer, less barren and we will be able to follow a progression of thought, feeling and expression. It will be about the individual's process of experiencing the coming of spring and representing that transition through image making. Think of it as developing a visual expressive continuum. All media welcome that has color. We will try to complete one painting a week, so 11 X 14 or 16 X 20 are good sizes to work on. If several ideas strike you during the week I will not dissuade you from working on more than one painting each week. SA 2A & 2B IPAD FOR ARTISTS Gail Sauter, 6 Weeks SA 2 A Monday 10 – 1 SA 2 B Monday 6 - 9 April 9 – May 14 Tuition $270 This class is about learning how to improve your paintings by using an iPad to test out new ideas. Learn how to simplify, move and resize elements, how to change areas of color, work with layers, make screenshots, edit details, and do digital sketching. This is a technique class in digital manipulation and understanding your iPad, not a class in creating finished digital artwork. Requires an iPad with ios 11.1 or later and the ProCreate app. SA 3 BUILDING DRAWING SKILLS Carol Morley, 10 Weeks Monday, 12:30 – 3:30 February 5 – April 16 (no class March 19) Tuition $300 Copy Fee $4 Students will learn the fundamentals of representational drawing in a relaxed atmosphere. The course will cover contour drawing, perspective, composition and mastering tonal values through the observation of still life forms. We will then experiment with drawing techniques, explore visual vocabulary and the expression of creative ideas in still life, landscape and portraits. This is a fun and supportive class that will give you a chance to try out new ideas and develop your own unique way of drawing. Your personal drawings can be of any subject. We will be focusing on some key artists of the movement to explore in depth the whole notion of Abstract Expressionism and its historical impact on painting today. Early 20th century painting will be a general topic discussion to see how the many influences of modern thought, technology and politics helped lay the groundwork for the development of Abstract Expressionism. As we discuss various artists each student may find abstract work they respond to and use that influence to create a body of work. It may be grappling with a theme, various techniques, juggling pictorial elements, or focusing on color to enhance expression. It can also be taking what you have already been painting and evolve the subject matter into more expressive and abstract work. Oil, acrylic,watercolor. Students are encouraged to bring more than one painting/canvas/substrate to work on each week, especially if working in oils.

This class will provide training in the direct observation ofform and its surrounding elements. The emphasize will be oncontrolling watercolor media to re-creating the appearance ofnature with use of surrounding forms. Winter Fun! Dustan Knight’s class is perfect to learn the tricks and talents of watercolor and acrylic paint. Each class will focus on one specific characteristic of the water media, for example, creating textures in watercolor, pouring acrylics etc. Fun and playful and informative. You will experiment with the materials in a way that will enrich all your other artistic work.

This class is an opportunity for students to draw the figure from life over the course of ten weeks. We will work on several poses throughout the semester, starting each with a linear block-in and move forward to a finished, 3-dimensional figure with full values and form. We will discuss and employ topics including gesture, proportion, comparative measurement, and building volume. We'll work together through each step of the drawing via demos, problem-solving, and discussion. The focus will be to create figure drawings that demonstrate both anatomical accuracy and sensitivity to line work and composition.

SA 9PAINTING THE STILL LIFE IN OILSydney Sparrow, 10 WeeksWednesday 6 - 9February 7 – April 11Tuition $300

In this ten-week course we will be approaching the still life, working to complete realistic, vibrant paintings from life. We will address both direct painting, as well as layered painting; from a drawing, to an underpainting, to a finished piece. The focus of the course is to use the observational process to more fully understand hue, value, and chroma as it relates to the still life. We will also spend time talking about color mixing, palettes, surfaces, and composition.

Explore the natural world through sketching and drawing. Learn how to portray the characteristics of plants through observation and drawing exercises. Through guided instruction you will learn about color mixing with colored pencils and experiment with mixed media using pen and ink and color wash.Suitable for any level.

This studio class is for anyone from beginner to the advanced painter looking to develop their visual vocabulary and expression. From realism to expressionism, there are some simple methods that can significantly improve your oil painting, through the use of light, color, atmosphere and form. Students will be introduced to the knowledge and skills necessary to represent the world around them. Personal projects and assignments will help explore these concepts. Individual expression and growth will be encouraged. All painting levels will meet simultaneously, from beginner to advanced. Materials list presented at the first class. Beginners very welcome.

Try your hand at colored pencils. This versatile medium can produce so many different effects from drawing to painting. Learn how to make complex textures and patterns that are simple to do. By varying pressure or pressing into the paper surface you can achieve a look as smooth as silk or a rough and deeply textured one. No drawing experience is required. You can created patterns and textures, abstract designs, decorative letters or bring in photo images to make an illustration or design. Color is the essence of this class, so we will examine how colors can harmonize together or create great contrast, recede into a background or appear to advance in space. Exploring and experimenting with this medium is a great way to get to know the language of color, pencil techniques and to develop your own creative ideas along the way.

Calling all bird lovers! This one day workshop will be a fun and informative day of painting your favorite song birds! Learn to capture the endearing quality of these gentle creatures in soft pastel. Focus will be on capturing the birds expression, especially the eyes, beak and feet. Learn to deviate from the photo to create a unique background and techniques to capture the body and feathers without worrying about every detail. Composition and placement of the bird within the scene will also be discussed. Plenty of pictures to be

provided, if you don't have your own. Everyone will leave with a finished Pastel.

In this class we will be exploring wax as a sculpting medium. The class will focus on techniques and methods for creating one of a kind pieces that can move directly into the lost wax process for metal casting. Wax casting, free form sculpting, and a variety of tools and their uses will be introduced. Students will walk away feeling more confident using this often misunderstood material. All materials will be provided. Class will the held in the wax room at Green Foundry (second floor).

Have you taken one or more figure sculpture classes and want more practice with the model, or are you yearning to learn more about anatomy? In this sculpture class we will work with a model to explore the dynamics of proportion, symmetry and contour in clay. We will also dive into some of the surface anatomy which helps create a more convincing sculpture. While we sculpt to create a likeness we will also consider the archetypal or overarching feeling of the pose and the model. Starting out with a few short sketches we will determine a pose and spend the bulk of our time refining what we see and how to make it both meaningful and beautiful.

In this class, students will experiment using colored glazes on terra cotta clay sculpture. Students will hand build small sculptural pieces as well as larger low relief wall pieces to create glaze subjects. Painting with Majolica glaze and colorants will bring colored brilliance to sculpted relief. Demonstrations will include hand building with terra cotta clay, glazing with Majolica glaze, painting with colorants and adhering relief tiles to backing. Suitable for all levels.
