robotron*SwitchingServer

e increased use of IP-based networks in the gateway and meter communication, especially through the application of GPRS/UMTS, requires scalable and failsafe solutions for the switching-based M2M communication. e focus lies on the administration of dynamic addressing, the provision of leased lines, the support of push-operation as well as aspects of security in terms of communication regarding the requirements resulting from the protection pro les and its technical guidelines.

Robotron solution

e robotron*SwitchingServer takes the role of a database-supported, scalable and failsafe switching center for IP-based M2M data communication. Complete support of Web services, IP telemetry standards acc. to DIN 43863-4 as well as TAINY-SwitchingCenter protocols (TSC) guarantee an integration of the latest equipment technology. erefore communication according to the requirements of the technical guideline of the Federal O ce for Information Security (BSI TR-03109) is ensured.

Load distribution and redundancy

e distribution of integrated devices and communication components (gates) to several communication nodes provides also a redundant operation in multi-node mode. e administration of all gates and nodes within one Oracle database allows for interoperability between all registered components.

Core functionalities

Essential core functionalities of the robotron*SwitchingServer are:

Support of IP telemetry acc. to E-DIN 43863-4 as well as TSC protocol

M2M dial-up and leased line operation

Establishing of secured TLS channels (with/without integration of hardware security module (HSM))

Multitenancy through grouping of gates

Smart Grid functionalities (protocol conversion e.g. to/from IEC60870-5-104) for integration of SCADA systems

Support of several push procedures incl. de ned push-target registration

Complete data volume registration per gate

Switching-routing option: mapping of cascaded communication connections, routing to not directly connected participants

Supported push-procedures

Point-to-PointA push source (e.g. gateway) sends data to a de ned and registered push target.

Point-to-Point with redundant push targetsA push source (e.g. gateway or communication module) sends data to a registered push target, yet for which more than one redundant recipient is de ned. robotron*SwitchingServer uses an optimized load distribution technique to transmit the data to one of the de ned recipients.

Point-to-MultipointA push source sends data to a registered push target, yet for which several recipients have been de ned. In this case the data will be distributed to each de ned recipient.

Protocol conversion

e robotron*SwitchingServer o ers the possibility of conversion between di erent protocols of user data. is conversion is done in a continuous manner parallel to the incoming user data and can be conducted bidirectionally. Measured values received by the robotron*SwitchingServer can be forwarded to a registrated gate via SML or IEC1107, which will process the information in an alternative format, such as IEC60870-5-104.

An integration of network control systems as well as process control systems is guaranteed. at contains constantly updated and by electric meters collected network quality data (current values of voltage, power, power frequency or phase angles etc.).

The importance of robotron*SwitchingServer for Smart Meter Gateways

e robotron*SwitchingServer plays an important role regarding the orderly realization of particularly high safety demands of Smart Metering systems in Germany. In this context it serves as remote station to the secure communication channel acc. to BSI TR-03109 for Smart Meter Gateways (SMGW) and therefore provides a central M2M communication interface for e cient and secure data transfer and administration of SMGW.

Below some of the implemented functions of robotron*SwitchingServer regarding BSI TR-3109are listed:

Execution of wake-up call from robotron*SwitchingServer to SMGW

Bidirectional TLS authentication by means of the required Cipher-Suites as part of the BSI TR-03109

Data volume registration per gateway or any other grouping

Visualization of the current status (TLS, IP-T etc.) of all registered SMGW

Integration of more than one HSM of di erent producers

Integrated certi cation management of all BSI TR-03109-relevant X.0509 certi cates

Statistic module

e general status of the system is summarized and visualized with the help of the available statistic module. It implies that information such as log-on status, number of open connections to gates and nodes as well as other relevant information are centralized and displayed. Communication-relevant GPRS parameters are periodically requested using IP telemetry. e results are displayed in a graphical summary (e. g. per gate).

Efficient interaction of Robotron products

Exceptionally e cient is the application of robotron*SwitchingServer in combination with further modules of the Robotron Energy Market Suite. With its direct connection to the remote meter reading solution robotron*ecollect the de nition of gateways and communication modules in both systems is supported parallel to the visualization of the IPT device status in robotron*ecollect.
