Digital Platform Transformation for a Leading Medical Journal

JB&JS needed to acquire better, faster digital capabilities to meet its customers’ evolving expectations. This required a new e-commerce platform and a single identity for each customer in a synchronized data store. In addition to migrating its flagship journal product to the new platform, the company needed to implement a host of new features to serve customers.

JB&JS also needed to launch another platform to deliver a new journal product to customers, peer review evaluation, which fills a key need in the scholarly publication industry.

A leading orthopedic medical journal, The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JB&JS), wanted to improve its marketing agility and customer experiences by launching a new e-commerce platform and a new journal product for its customers. In only 14 months, Collaborative implemented both platforms, which enabled JB&JS to better respond to customers’ needs, deliver agile marketing promotions, and improve product sales.

“Speed to market is so critical. Collaborative built both our e-commerce and critical operational data store for a seamless, digital experience in just 14 months. This platform is very easy to use and so flexible. It has empowered the business leads to do everything all by themselves now to promote any new product quickly and it works magically for us.”

– Katherine Shea,

Enterprise Group Portfolio Manager,

The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery

Collaborative delivered comprehensive services to design, implement and support the integrated e-commerce storefront platform and peer review evaluation platform.

The e-commerce platform was built on the nopCommerce open source framework. It integrated with two different content publishing platforms in real time to deliver license information after purchases were made.

The e-commerce platform also hosted the authentication service on behalf of the content publishing platform.

Collaborative designed the operational data store for the storage and de-duplication of a single customer identity for each user.

Collaborative performed data migration activities for all customer data as part of the platform migration.

The project was highly successful, delivering benefits to both business and IT:

The new storefront increased product sales and allowed for better responsiveness to customers by enabling business users to quickly and easily customize pricing, promotions, and targeted marketing programs.

The solution provided massive de-duplication of the customer data in the legacy systems and centralized the management of this data to produce a seamless single-view of the customer.
