IA is everywhere. that is so deep. and broad. whoa.

stuff I like about this chapter

SI658 Information Architecture3

It gives us a framework to think holistically about

Information Architecture across channels, which is

a really BIG problem, and can be overwhelming.

discrete criteria = manageable task

Designing for Cross-Channel

stuff I DON’T like about this chapter

I have taken math classes, so

graphs with a y-axis, x-axis, and arrows imply

dependent relationships between variables.

They don’t mean it like this. They are just making a

chart.

So in your mind, take off the arrows and any

references to an “axis”. Now you have a square you

can put some stuff on.

Take away: ignore all the psuedo-math diagrams.

evaluate the user

experience for

discrete user tasks

based on the five

heuristics across

channels.

Designing for Cross-Channel

channels, channels everywhere

These will change per company/project:

the NUMBER of channels touched

WHAT channels are touched

that is okay

but EVERY business should:

THINK about which channels make sense

ensure the UX across channels is awesome

revisit this often

resilience

digital environments can learn from our behavior,

habits, preferences, and anticipate what we want.

aka the creepy one

maintain a dialog between channels, apply

learnings across channels to predict needs

adapt to changing needs based on context

support multiple strategies for tasks

SLOWLY change foundations over time

correlation – they mean it like this

showing connection between two basically not-

the-same things

NOT correlation:

correlation!

Page 11: Information Architecture class13 04 10

Designing for Cross-Channel

tips from Samantha Starmer

have a vision (unified approach/goal)

centralize content creation: “write once, publish many times”

enact real process change (this is hard)

optimize customer UX 1st, map to backend processes 2nd

need the right SYSTEMS to support an integrated approach (this is hard)

develop HOLISTIC IA for the full information ecology

Kars Alfrink says interesting stuff

magic circle: can do things in digital life that will

get you jailed in real life

geo-caching: just like the hobo code

adaptive design: supporting re-appropriation of

devices, their environments

re-place space

If it gets quiet I will call on people to ask

This is a gift. These people have no reason to not

be totally real with you. Get the dirt, yo.
