    Dear Parents,

Welcome to the MyrossBush School Family...

We are very proud of the learning we providefor our children and the caring environmentwhere each individual has opportunities todevelop a strong foundation in their academicand social life from which they can grow andstand tall. Each child is encouraged to beconfident in themselves as an individual andas a member of wider society.

The school has been on its current site since

1868 and has a proud tradition and heritageof providing a special environment thatchildren can feel part of for their primaryyears of education. Myross Bush School hasa current roll in February 2011 of 153 pupilswith 8 classrooms, and a team of passionateeducators who work together to make ourschool as happy and as rewarding aspossible for all our pupils.

We believe in ensuring our pupils have thefundamental skills of literacy and numeracy toprovide that strong foundation for continuedlearning throughout life. To engage ourlearners and to enhance our learningprogrammes we look to wrap these coreskills around the other essential learning

    areas of the curriculum.

The attention to fundamental learning broughtto life across the curriculum enables us topromote thinking skills and teach childrenhow to learn in an inquiry based approach.

Each childs learning pathway is unique andwe work in close partnership with home tohelp understand and develop the whole child. We have the expectation that children will

learn about themselves and how to treat

others the way they would wish to be treated.

We are also very pleased to be part of theschools immediate community and also thewider Invercargill and unique SouthlandRegion. The wider community recognises ourschool as an educational leader that isprepared to take the initiative and beinnovative while at the same time, share ourpassion for teaching and learning with others.

We encourage an open family environmentand invite you to visit us so you can see theschool in action for yourself. I am happy toanswer any questions you may have and toshow you around. Myross Bush School is aspecial place.

    Desirable experiencesfor pre school children

Talk to them about starting school, where they will meet new friends, playgames, sing and make things.

Help them to learn to put on theirshoes and do them up.

Give them duties to perform aroundhome which require one or two simpledirections. This will give themconfidence to complete small tasks.

Take them to Aunties or a friendshouse to stay awhile so they willaccept that they cannot always be withtheir parents.

Encourage them by admiring theirwork when they bring it home. Givetheir paintings and handiwork place ofhonour for a few days.

Select stories, picture books, radio andtelevision programmes for them. Strike

a balance between educational andinterest experiences.

    Read regularly to them.

As a family, GO, SEE, DO, DISCUSS.

These experiences are vital forbuilding on at school. Children cannotspeak or write unless they havesomething to speak or write about.

    Encourage careful listening and clearspeech.

Provide opportunities for your child tomake things.

By playing, a child is building upexperiences and knowledge especiallyuseful in mathematics.

    Enrolling 5 year olds

The school organises a pre-schoolmeeting with parents enrolling their childin school in the current year and includingpart of the next year. It gives parents anopportunity to meet the New EntrantTeachers and ask any questions aboutthis important transition. Staff will alsosuggest some activities to help develop

    pre-school Literacy and Numeracyknowledge.

It is usual for all pre school children to visitthe school for part of a morning prior tobeing enrolled. If you have not beencontacted by the school would you pleasering and make arrangements for a visit.

Through our last round of communityconsultation our community expressed thefollowing beliefs in the way they wanted theirchildren to be supported at Myross Bush Schoolthroughout their schooling.

Well supported, highly skilled andenthusiastic staff is our schools mostvaluable resource.

A good grounding in Literacy and Numeracywill give children a sound basis for futurelearning.

    Children should take increasing responsibility

for their learning to enable them to be lifelong learners.

The diverse nature of individual children willbe acknowledged and catered for.

An acceptance that risk taking and makingmistakes are part of learning.

Children are more able to reach theirpotential in a physically and emotionally safeenvironment.

An attractive and orderly environmentinspires pride and a sense of achievement.

Access to quality, relevant resources andfacilities enhances learning.

Positive working relationships betweenparents, staff, Board of Trustees, Friends ofthe School and the wider community will bepromoted.

All students will be given the opportunities togain knowledge and skills across allcurriculum areas.

These beliefs are supported by our visionstatement and the six core values. These arecentred around the picture of the Kahikatea Tree. This was selected because it is the tallestgrowing tree in our local Myross Bush area. Itgrows up to 60m tall and is also known as whitepine.

By using the image of the Kahikatea Tree thishelped inspire the development of our visionstatement which draws on the context of beingstrong, confident and being prepared to standabove the crowd to be the best you can be!
