1 General

1.1. Dust - causes and effectsWhenusingpowertoolsintheworkshopandonbuildingsites,suchas-wallchasers-boxcutters-drills-grindingmachines,etc.dustiscreated.

Usuallythisiswooddust,ormixedmineraldustthatiscreatedwhenworkingwithwood-,sand-,limestone-,brick-,plaster-,cementorconcrete,forexample.Experienceshowsthatthismixeddustcontainsaproportionofquarz,theamountofwhichcanvaryaccordingtothematerial.

Why is dust harmful ?Howharmfuldustisforhealthdepends,ontheonehand,on the size of the dust particlesandontheother,onthequantity of dustandthetimeperiodeinwhichthedustaffectsourbodies(lungs).

Thesmallerthedustparticles,thedeepertheycanpenetratethelungtissue.Largedustparticlesaredepositedmorequicklythanfinedustparticles.Asaresult,finedustaffectstheairweinhaleforlonger.Anytypeofdustcanleadtodiseasesoftheairwaysifexposuretoitishigh.Moreover,quarzdustcancausesilicosisandthereforelungcancer.

Asbestos and dust containing asbestos:Asbestoscomprisesagroupofnaturallyoccurring,anorganic,crystallinesilicates,whichappearintheformoffibres/bundlesoffibres.Thecharacteristicofasbestosisthatthebundlesoffibresbecomesplayedundermechanicalstress,whichcreateseverthinnerbundles.Iftheseareinhaled,theyaredepositedinthelungsandbecomeencapsulated.Asaresult,theyhaveanextremelycarci-nogeniceffect.

1.2.1. Dust classesDustthatisharmfultohealthisdividedintoso-calleddustclasses.Therearevacuumcleanersforeachoftheseclasses,whichmustmeetspecialrequirements.Youcandeterminewhichtypesofdustbelonginwhichclassesfromtherelevanttablesofmaterials.Foramoreprecisedefinitionofthematerialinthedustthatyouaredealingwith,pleasecontacttheprofessionalassociations.

Dust class „M“ (moderate):Dustsofthisclasshavegeneralthresholdlimitvaluesof>0,1mg/m3*.Vacuumcleanersofthisclassaretestedascompletemachines.Themaximumpenetrationvalueis<0,1%.Low-dustdisposalisrequired.

Dust class „H“ (high):Thisdustclassincludesdustwithgeneralthresholdlimitvaluesof<0,1mg/m3 *,alldustthatiscar-cinogenicanddustthatcontainspathogens.Vacuumcleanersofthisclassaretestedascompletemachines.Themaximumpenetrationvalueis<0.005%.Dust-freedisposalisrequired.

Dust class „H-Asbestos“:ThisclassisthesameasdustclassH,withadditionaltestingfordust-removingmachinesandequipmentthatisintendedtocollectandremoveasbestos.

1.2.2. FilterclassesFiltersarealsodividedintovariousclasses.Thereareanumberofstandardsfordeterminingthefiltrationperformanceofairfilters:EN1822,DIN24183andtheMILStandard282.Filtersinclasses„L“,„M“and„H“aretestedinaccordancewiththemethodprescribedbyIEC/EN60335-2-69withdifferentmaterialsandparticlesizes.

TheGermanFederalMinistryofEmployment(BundesministeriumfŸrArbeit(BMAS))issuednewTechnicalRegulationsforHazardousMaterials(abbreviatedtoTRGS559)on01.06.2010.Intheseregulations,thelegislatorsstatethatmachinesandequipmentmustbeoperatedinsuchawaythattheyreleaseaslittledustaspossible.

§ 4.8 Cleaning of the operating equipment(1)Dustdepositsaretobeavoided.Ifthisisnotpossible,workshops,workareas,transportati-onroutes,operatingequipment,machinesanddevicesmustbecleanedregularly.Thecleaningworkistobecarriedoutinsuchawaythatthereleaseandresuspensionofdustiskepttoaminimum,e.g.usingstate-of-the-artdamporwetprocesses,orextractionwithsuitablevacuumcleanersordedusters.(2)Thisisachievede.g.when:

Whenusingtechnicalequipment,careshouldbetakentoensurethatcoordinatedsystemsareused.Ifsystemsofthistypeareavailableonthemarket,theyshouldalwaysbeused.(SeethelistintheAppendix)Ifcoordinatedsystemsarenotavailable,itshouldbeascertainedwhetherthemanufacturercansupplyadetectiondevicetobeusedincombinationwithanapproveddedusterofdustclass„M“....
