SNDT Women’s University
‘Sanskrita Stree Parashakti’ (An enlightened woman is a source of Infinite
strength) - the motto - encapsulates raison d’être of the founding and a
century of service of the SNDT Women’s University (SNDT WU) to Indian
women of all strata.
The Vision of the founder of the University, Bharat Ratna Maharshi Dr. Dhondo
Keshav Karve to build a citadel of learning for women is encapsulated in the motto
of the University. The SNDT Women’s university Mumbai is the first Women’s
University in India as well as in South-East Asia and was founded in 1916. Sir
Vithaldas Thackersey, an eminent industrialist and philanthropist gave the required
financial support.
Thus one man’s vision and another man’s munificence gave birth to Shreemati
Nathibai Damnodar Thackersey (SNDT) Women’s University – the first Indian
Women’s University.
Substantial donations from many other philanthropists over the years helped the
University in improving access of women to professional as well as liberal
education. Management Education in particular was initiated in 1997 with a
generous support of the generous BAJAJ Family.
The University Headquarters is in Churchgate, Mumbai and has campuses in Juhu
Mumbai, Pune, Palghar, Shriwardhan and Ahmedabad. For nearly hundred years
the University has been striving for and growing to newer heights of performance
and outreach. It has an all India jurisdiction and has affiliated colleges in 8 states
and one Union territory. The university was accredited with an ‘A’ Grade from the
National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in January 2016. The
SNDT Women’s university is affirmative in its commitment to the empowerment of
women through education and pursues excellence as is evident in its vision and
mission statements.
In a century of its existence, the enrolment in SNDT WU has increased from 5
women in Pune in 1916, who graduated in the first batch to more than 69000
women students who are enrolled in over 174 affiliated colleges in 7 states of India,
39 post graduate departments and 13 institutions conducted by the university in its
three campuses in 2016. This great Women’s University’s entry into centennial year
(2015-16) is a matter of great pride not only for the women of this country but for
the entire Indian society. Our world would not have been the same if this university
had not educated millions of women since 1916.
Prof. Shashikala Wanjari, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, an eminent
authority on Education is leading the university to become a world
renowned university.
Vision
Today we visualise the SNDT Women’s University as a world class university that continually responds to the changing social realities through the development and
application of knowledge. The purpose of such engagement will be to create an inclusive society that promotes and protects the dignity, equality, social justice and
human rights for all, with special emphasis on empowerment of women. Mission
SNDT Women’s University is committed to the cause of women’s empowerment
through access to education, particularly higher education, through relevant courses in the formal and non-formal streams. Further the university is committed to provide a wide range of professional and vocational courses for women to meet

12. Examination and Evaluation
All programmes offered in JDBIMS have continuous internal evaluation of 50% and end of semester evaluation of 50% and each of these has a separate head of
passing with a requirement 40% of marks. The final result is expressed in 7-point scale.
From academic year 2015-16, the grades will be expressed in 10-point scale as given below.
Letter Grades and Grade Points:
i. Two methods -relative grading or absolute grading– have been in vogue
for awarding grades in a course. The relative grading is based on the
distribution (usually normal distribution) of marks obtained by all the students of the course and the grades are awarded based on a cut-off
marks or percentile. Under the absolute grading, the marks are converted to grades based on pre-determined class intervals. To implement the following grading system, the colleges and universities can use any one of
the above methods.
ii. The UGC recommends a 10-point grading system with the following letter grades as given below:
Table 1: Grades and Grade Points
Letter Grade Grade Point
O (Outstanding) 10
A+ (Excellent) 9
A (Very Good) 8
B+ (Good) 7
B (Above Average) 6
C (Average) 5
P (Pass) 4
F (Fail) 0
Ab (Absent) 0
iii. A student obtaining Grade F shall be considered failed and will be required
to reappear in the examination.
iv. For non-credit courses ‘Satisfactory’ or “Unsatisfactory’ shall be indicated
instead of the letter grade and this will not be counted for the computation of SGPA/CGPA.
v. The Universities can decide on the grade or percentage of marks required to pass in a course and also the CGPA required to qualify for a degree
taking into consideration the recommendations of the statutory professional councils such as AICTE, MCI, BCI, NCTE etc.,
vi. The statutory requirement for eligibility to enter as assistant professor in
colleges and universities in the disciplines of arts, science, commerce etc.,
is a minimum average mark of 50% and 55% in relevant postgraduate degree respectively for reserved and general category. Hence, it is
recommended that the cut-off marks for grade B shall not be less than 50% and for grade B+, it should not be less than 55% under the absolute grading system. Similarly cut-off marks shall be fixed for grade B and B+
based on the recommendation of the statutory bodies (AICTE, NCTE etc.,) of the relevant disciplines.
Computation of SGPA and CGPA
The UGC recommends the following procedure to compute the Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA):
i. The SGPA is the ratio of sum of the product of the number of credits
with the grade points scored by a student in all the courses taken by a student and the sum of the number of credits of all the courses undergone by a student, i.e
SGPA (S) = Σ (Ci x Gi) / ΣCi
Where Ci is the number of credits of the ith course and Gi is the grade point scored by the student in the ith course.
ii. The CGPA is also calculated in the same manner taking into account all
the courses undergone by a student over all the semesters of a programme, i.e.
CGPA = Σ (Ci x Si) / Σ Ci
where Si is the SGPA of the ith semester and Ci is the total number of credits in that semester.
ii. The SGPA and CGPA shall be rounded off to 2 decimal points and reported in the transcripts.
