Career Expl oration

Find careers that match your interests

The Grow Careers website at http://www.growcareers.com.au/index.php?id=90 has recently included a career interest questionnaire called the RIASEC Career Interest Tool (click on ‘Read more’). The theory behind this questionnaire was developed by John Holland. It states that each person resembles one of six vocational personality types – Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising and Conventional. Read more about these types on the website and then download the pencil and paper questionnaire. You can use the three-letter code (based on your three highest scoring personality types) that comes up after you complete the questionnaire to read about jobs you might be interested in. The website provides links to a few resources to help you do this.

Videos about jobs

One way to learn more about the jobs you are interested in is to watch videos about them. The myfuture website at https://myfuture.edu.au/ has information on over 500 jobs. You will need to ‘Sign up’ (free of charge) to enter the site for the first time. Otherwise ‘Log in’ and, once on the site, click on ‘Occupations’ and search for the jobs you are currently exploring. Most job descriptions on the site include a video. Each video lasts approximately three minutes. After you have viewed a video see if you can answer the following questions.

Name at least three of the main duties and tasks required in this occupation.

Would you like to do this job? Why or why not?

List some things you learnt about this occupation.

Employment

Job prospects

There are a number of resources you can use to research the employment prospects of jobs you are interested in. These include:

The Job Outlook website at http://joboutlook.gov.au/Pages/default.aspx provides information from the Australian Bureau of Statistics about job prospects. The information is based on trends in the employment market. Just go onto the website and search for the occupation you are interested in by the name of the occupation or alphabetically.

Labour Market Information Portal at http://lmip.gov.au/ presents employment information at national and regional levels. Two areas of interest for students are ‘Labour force region’ (learn about employment in your region) and ‘Employment projections’ (by industry, occupation, skill level and region for the next five years).

Department of Employment at http://employment.gov.au/skill-shortages gives current information about skill shortages in the Australian labour market, including skill shortages by occupation. This could be helpful information when making career decisions, but should not be the only criteria used.

The Australian Jobs 2016 can be downloaded at https://docs.employment.gov.au/system/files/doc/other/australianjobs2016_0.pdf. It will take about a minute to open. It gives an overview of the current labour market, highlighting major changes that have occurred in industries and jobs. The information is based mostly on Australian Bureau of Statistics data. The booklet includes a ‘Jobs in the Future’ section and links to other useful resources.

‘Grad Jobs and Dollars’ on the Graduate Careers Australia website at http://www.graduatecareers.com.au/research/gradjobsdollars/ provides information about the characteristics of graduates in specific occupations, their employment outcomes and their earnings.

It is important to remember that no graduate is guaranteed a job. It is recommended that students start their job search (do work experience or an internship, develop a network of contacts, gain part-time or holiday work in the industry of interest, etc.) during their course (whether it is at university, TAFE or a private college) not after they receive their qualification. Most institutions have Career and Employment Services that can help students with this process.

Opportunities for Engineers

Engineering specialists in materials, biochemicals, nanotech and robotics will become critically important to industries by 2020, claims new research by the World Economic Forum. The report, titled ‘The Future of Jobs’, looked at how the 4th Industrial Revolution would disrupt business and labour markets over the next five years. The 4th Industrial Revolution will see the coming together of multiple fields, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, robotics, nanotechnology, 3D printing and genetics and biotechnology. Read more at http://telg.com.au/opportunities-for-engineers-as-the-fourth-industrial-revolution-hits.

What are Transferable Skills?

Transferable skills are the skills a worker has that can be adapted to different jobs. Common examples include social, communication, teamwork, leadership and organisational skills. All workers have transferable skills but many lack an awareness and understanding of what these skills are. You, as a student, have transferable skills. Visit the Princeton University’s Career Services website at https://careerservices.princeton.edu/undergraduate-students/resumes-letters-online-profiles/resumes/transferable-skills to identify your transferable skills.

Will a robot take your job?

The British Broadcasting Corporation has created a website at http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-34066941 which gives you the percentage chance that the job you are interested in could be automated in the future (based on UK figures). According to information on this site, jobs that require empathy (e.g. social workers, nurses, psychologists), creative and original ideas (e.g. artists, designers, engineers) and a high degree of social intelligence and negotiating skills (e.g. managers) have a lower risk of being taken over by robots.

Thinking of studying overseas?

You might find the following resources useful when you begin your search for an overseas university/course.

Trusted sources: Seeking advice on applying to universities in another country - The US National Association of College Admission Counseling (US spelling) has produced this brochure to help US students when applying to study at an overseas university. While the brochure is oriented to US students, it could be useful to Australian students and their parents. The brochure can be downloaded at http://www.nacacnet.org/International/InternationalInitiatives/Documents/TrustedSourcesFinal.pdf.

Study Overseas Web Portal - The Commonwealth Government has developed this portal at http://www.studyoverseas.gov.au/Pages/default.aspx for Australian university and VET students. It provides useful information for Australian students planning their overseas study, including information on Australian Government scholarships (e.g. New Colombo Plan).
