Welcome to Year 1Class Teachers

Mrs. Samantha Millar & Mrs. Danielle Sturma

Daily Routine

O In order to nurture their independence, the children will say goodbye to you in the morning on the decking and then proceed independently into the classroom where they will unpack their bag and get themselves ready for the day.

Daily RoutineO Please ensure that you are on time for school.

If you are late then your child needs to go to the office to get a late pass.

O Our day generally operates with Literacy and Numeracy in the early part of the day with Specialists and Unit Of Inquiry later in the day.

O We meditate once a day as part of the school’s commitment to mindfulness and well being. Our meditation time varies depending on the children’s schedule and needs.

O Please wait for your child on the deck in the afternoon.

LiteracyO Reading: shared reading, guided

reading, small group activities, oral language.

O Writing: handwriting, spelling, grammar, punctuation, variety of genres.

O The children will complete work independently, in small groups and as a class.

NumeracyO In year 1 we cover;

numbers 1-100, place value, fractions, addition, subtraction, multiplication,

division, geometry, measurement, chance and data.

O The children will complete work independently, in small groups and as a class.

O Manipulating objects and playing games helps to introduce, consolidate and extend mathematical skills and knowledge.

Units Of InquiryO We complete 6 units during the year.O They are integrated into our core

subjects of Literacy and Numeracy and wherever appropriate within Specialist subjects.

Show & ShareO Each child is allocated a day.O First semester it is an expectation

that they will share once a week.O Second semester they share once a

fortnight.O There will often be a theme for their

sharing .

iPads O iPads are to be brought to school every

day fully charged. They cannot be charged at school.

O In the morning the children will place their iPads in their chairbag. iPads cannot be used during the day unless the students have been directed to do so by a teacher. Nor can they be used on the playground before or after school even if you are supervising them.

iPadsO iPads are a wonderful learning tool however

they need to be managed responsibly.O Set up usage rules for home.O It is your responsibility to ensure that all the

requested apps are loaded on at the start of each term and old apps are removed.

O Please clear everything off the iPad except the requested apps for the start of each new year.

O Back up your child’s iPad regularly at home.

Eating Time O There are 3 breaks during the day where

the children may eat – fruit/vegies, snack and lunch.

O The children are given approximately 10 minutes to eat before they go out for the start of play time.

O Please aim to have nude food.

The Big Red BusO The Big Red Bus is a teaching

tool – just a very big one!O It is not an indoor playground.O The children earn the right to

access the bus by gaining tickets (economy & first class). These tickets are awarded at my discretion for excellent behaviour or work.

O It is incorporated into all of our Units Of Inquiry as well as our Literacy & Numeracy teaching.

Class BlogO Our Class Blog is another way for you to be

kept informed as to what is happening in the classroom.

O It is generally updated every 7-14 days.O Please follow by email so that you are

always notified when there is a new post.

Homework

O Ideally it is best completed straight after school.

O Homework should not be stressful or time consuming.

O Homework is generally reading and occasionally spelling.

O Some children may also be given flashcards.O Please record your child’s reading in their

Reading Book every night.

Take Home ReadersO Take home readers are books that

are slightly lower that what they are reading in class.

O If you find that their book is far too hard or far too easy please let me know.

O You will find as the year progresses and their reading improves that they may need several nights to finish a book as they are longer.

Classroom HelpersO I LOVE classroom helpers

and so do your children!O If you are interested in

helping on a regular basis in the classroom please fill in the sheet indicating what time and day you are available.

O I aim to start helpers next week.

How else can I help?O There are several

excursions and incursions planned for the year.

O I often need 1-4 parents to assist on each excursion.

O There will also be opportunities during the year where you can contribute to the class by sharing your experiences and expertise e.g. Units Of Inquiry, MAD Week etc.

Parent NoticesO Please return all notices in a timely

fashion.O If we do not receive a response from

you then unfortunately your child will not be allowed to attend the excursion.

O If we have a special event coming up then we will aim to have a reminder sticker in the diary.

Need to speak to me?O Please use your child’s diary to

communicate with me on a day to day basis.

O If your child is going to be late or sick or if your pick up plans have altered please let the office know rather than me.

O If you need to speak to me face to face please email me to arrange a suitable meeting time.
