Tradition and PrestigePalacký University Olomouc is the second-oldest university in the Czech Republic, educating scholars since the 16th century. Olomouc is also the site of the second-largest his-torical monuments preserve in the country. A second home to more than 23,000 students from all over the world, Olo-mouc is a university town, the “Czech Oxford”. Its eight faculties provide 240 study programmes in Bach-elor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees. They encompass virtually everything: Theology, Education, Law, Physical Education and Sports, Arts and Humanities, Natural Sciences, Medicine, and Health Science. And top-level disci-plines, such as Experimental Medicine, Nanotechnology, Optics, Kinanthropology, and Experimental Physics. And internationally-recognised specialties such as Special

Education, Physiotherapy, and Psychology. Students from partner universities – either bilateral or Erasmus and CEEPUS programme agreements – can come for one or two semesters and study any of the individual courses that are taught in foreign languages as part of regular study pro-grammes or specifically designed for exchange students.

Science and ResearchPalacký University is a modern research university. Science and research – their support and development – are top priorities. Research teams utilise state-of-the-art techno-logies, and students assist in solving scientific research projects. Palacký University Olomouc (UP) collaborates with a number of foreign partnership institutes where UP students can apply for study stays.

The Arts Centre and the ArmouryThe Palacký University Arts Centre, in a magnificent Renais-sance building, houses a  variety of arts disciplines. Stu-dents and teachers make use of its theatre, gallery, cinema, choir hall, music studios, and fine arts ateliers. Concerts are regularly held in its courtyard and Baroque Corpus Christi Chapel.The central university library is located in a  Baroque armoury from Maria Theresa’s time on Bishop’s Square, across from the Faculty of Arts. This historical building also provides facilities for the Palacký University Computer Centre, Publishing House, Archive, and Communications Office. Students can make use of the university textbook bookshop, study rooms, and restaurant.

Students for StudentsOne of the many plusses of living and studying in Olomouc is the opportunity to take part in its countless cultural, sporting, and social events. Three dozen student clubs have their share in the organisa-tion of many events. Students run their own radio and TV stations, sing in choirs, stage plays, and organise film clubs. Music, theatre, and film festivals such as Academia Film Olomouc, Festival of Film Animation, Septembeam (video mapping), May Festival, and Flora Theatre Festival take place throughout the academic year.

The Faculty of Theology has the longest tradition among the faculties in Olomouc, going back to the year 1573. Its main building is the historical Seminary of St Francis Xavier on University Street. It is open to all students, regardless of their faith.Theology is the traditional pillar of the curriculum, studied by candidates for the priesthood as well as other interested persons. The faculty has been further focusing on education of experts in non-theological areas such as social and charity work, international humanitarian aid, and special education.

Study programmesThe Sts Cyril and Methodius Faculty offers studies in Theology, Theological Studies, Social Policy and Social Work, and Social Education. Christian Education teachers for primary schools are also trained here.Popular study programmes include Charity and Social Work, or International Humanitarian and Social Work, conducted in collaboration with Caritas – College of Social Work Olomouc. Social Education is also very popular.Master’s degree programme graduates may continue their study in postgraduate doctoral programmes.

Of special interestExperts in the Centre for the Study of Patristic, Medieval and Renaissance Texts research and publish works on Medieval and Renaissance texts linked with Bohemia and Moravia. Yet unpublished Latin manuscripts are being prepared for publication.The Olomouc University Social Health Institute (OUSHI) is a science and re-search institute at the Palacky University in Olomouc which was established to provide general support for research and education in the area of social aspects of health.OUSHI focuses on research of social and spiritual determinants of health, health psychology, epidemiology and public health.

Physicians have been instructed in Olomouc since the 18th century. The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry as such was opened in 1947, one of the four faculties after the university’s restoration. Partnerships with other universities, hospitals, and specialised institutes across Europe involve both lecturing and scientific research. Practical training is provided in collaboration with Teaching Hospital Olomouc. The UP Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry is a leading institution in biomedical research, with a long-standing tradition and the ambition to become an eminent centre of innovation and excellence among medical faculties in the Czech Repub-lic and all of Central Europe.

Study programmesThe Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry offers two Master’s degree study pro-grammes: General Medicine and Dentistry. Both programmes may be studied in English. The faculty also offers 22 doctoral study programmes in Czech and English along with continual lifelong education, including the University of the Third Age.

Of special interestThe Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry keeps expanding and modernising. Experts in the newly opened Institute of Molecular and Translational Medicine investi-gate the causes of tumorous and infectious diseases on the molecular level. The completion of its new Theoretical Institutes has significantly enhanced the quality of provided education. New possibilities in instruction such as telemedi-cine have been developed and ultramodern simulators are in use.

The Faculty of Arts is the largest UP faculty. Its twenty-one departments offer more than 600 combinations of humanities, social, linguistic, and arts studies programmes. The Faculty of Arts offers a liberal approach in arranging one’s own curriculum, a personal approach to students, and development of individual skills. Student activities are strongly supported, with emphasis on involving students in expert and cultural activities. An open space for discussion is promoted and creative thinking is welcome.

Study programmesThe Faculty of Arts provides instruction in a number of languages and literatures (Chinese, Czech, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Ukrainian), arts studies (Art History, Musicology, Theory and History of the Dramatic Arts, and Theatre, Film and Media Studies), and social sciences (Journalism, Sociology, History, Andragogy, Cultural Anthro-pology, Psychology, and Political and European Studies).All fields of study are accredited for Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degree study programmes. Teaching qualifications for secondary and further education are also offered.

Of special interestThe Faculty of Arts participates in organising the largest European festival of documentary and popular science films, Academia Film Olomouc. Events organ-ised by art studies departments in the premises of the Palacký University Arts Centre contribute to the cultural life of the region.

Modern lecture halls and laboratories are at the disposal of teachers, scientists, and students in the city, as well as a growing campus of biotechnological insti-tutes such as the Regional Centre of Advanced Technologies and Nanomaterials and the Centre of the Region Haná for Biotechnological and Agricultural Re-search. Students can join international research teams and publish their findings in prestigious scientific journals.

Study programmesThis research-oriented faculty offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees in a variety of branches in Mathematics, Informatics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Geography, Geology, Geoinformatics, and De-velopmental Studies, in both full-time and distance study, and within lifelong education. Single-major study as well as double-major (teacher training) study is available in all disciplines.

Of special interestThe Faculty of Science is proud of its creative potential, extensive research find-ings, and versatile international collaboration. Its scientists produce significant achievements in the fields of nanomaterial research, optics, and research of new chemicals applicable in medicine, industry, optics, and biology.

The roots of the tradition of teacher training in Olomouc go back to the 18th century. Both teachers and students are encouraged to attach themselves to its prestige and rich history and develop it in a creative manner in the spirit of mod-ern European educational trends.The Faculty of Education strives for maintaining tradition, versatility and moder-nity in the education of students for their teaching careers or other positions in education, social affairs, or public administration.

Study programmesThe Faculty of Education offers educational and specialised studies in the fields of Teaching, Special Needs Teaching, Primary and Pre-Primary  Education, Special Education, Social Work, Public Administration, Social Sciences, English and Ger-man, Mathematics, Czech, Biology, Environmental Studies, Technical Education and Information Technology, Health Education, Music Education, Art Education, and more.

Of special interestAcademic research activities involve the quality of life for the disabled, quality of education, educational institution climate and its evaluation, educational methodology innovation, prevention of risky virtual communication, compara-tive zoology in natural sciences, etc. The faculty collaborates with Czech and international experts and is very produc-tive in the field of arts (exhibitions, concerts, etc.). It also hosts the Support Centre for Students with Special Needs which helps challenged students from all faculties.

The Faculty of Physical Culture has been a part of Palacký University since 1991. It offers instruction in the fields of Physical Education and Sports, Recreation, Physiotherapy and Adapted Physical Activities and also provides licences in coaching. It is a  leading institute in the Czech Republic in the area of human movement and healthy lifestyle. The new Olomouc-Neředín campus will con-centrate ultramodern facilities for research in human movement and transfer research findings into practice.

Study programmesThe study programme Physical Education and Sports encompasses, on both Bachelor’s and continuing Master’s levels, the study of Physical Education and Sports, Leisure Studies, Civil Defence, Adapted Physical Activities, and Adapted Physical Education. The “adapted” disciplines are aimed at students with dis-abilities. The study programme Healthcare Specialisation includes the study of Physiotherapy. Doctoral studies are possible in Kinanthropology.

Of special interestThe Faculty of Physical Culture also provides various forms of lifelong education, specifically coaching and licence programmes, and counselling in the area of sports and active lifestyle.Many international partners are involved in research as well as student exchanges; research voyages on historical sailing ships and expeditions to China have been most popular.

Despite being one of the youngest UP faculties today, the Faculty of Law builds on several hundred years of earlier tradition. Its mission is to encourage and sup-port the values of liberty, democracy, and civic society. Academicians put empha-sis on practical forms of education, developing students’ skills. The faculty fea-tures modern lecture rooms, which are also used for academic conferences, seminars, and festive assemblies.

Study programmesThe faculty offers a five-year Master’s degree programme in Law and Legal Sci-ence, a three-year Bachelor’s degree programme in Law in Public Administration, and a continuing Master’s degree programme in European Studies with Speciali-sation in European Law.The postgraduate programme Theoretical Legal Science is focused on Civil, Crim-inal, Administrative, and Constitutional Law, as well as European and Interna-tional Law. The faculty awards the degree Doctor of Law in 14 disciplines.All degree programmes are taught in Czech. However, the faculty offers a range variety of specialized courses within the Law-in-English module focusing on inter-national and European Law and other selected subjects to give international students fundamental knowledge of the political system and the system of law in the Czech Republic. Morever, the Ph.D. programme European and International Law is provided also in English.

Of special interestThe faculty also runs The Legal Clinic, a legal counselling centre offering legal as-sistance especially to socially needy persons or people with other special needs, the first of its kind in Central Europe. Its clinical law programme is top-level in the European context.

The Faculty of Health Sciences is the newest faculty at Palacký University, estab-lished in 2008 after its separation from the UP Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. Classes take place in the premises of Teaching Hospital Olomouc and the Theo-retical Institutes of the Faculty of Medicine.

Study programmesThe Faculty of Health Sciences offers Bachelor’s degree study programmes, con-tinuing Master’s degree programmes, and a Doctoral degree study programme. The Bachelor’s programmes include General Nursing, Midwifery, and healthcare specialisations such as Physiotherapy and Radiology Assistant.Continuing Master’s degree study programmes include healthcare specialisa-tions such as Physiotherapy and Nursing Care in Internal Medicine. Doctoral study is provided in Nursing.

Of special interestFaculty members’ scientific publications are published in an interdisciplinary journal Profese on-line, issued semi-annually in a  Czech and English edition (www.profeseonline.upol.cz).The journal addresses professionals in nursing, birth delivery assistance, physio-therapy, radiological assistance, anthropology, psychology, sociology as well as in specialised services in health care, oriented to improve the quality of provided care and to develop the theoretical basis of all healthcare disciplines.
