WELCOME TOGOODWOOD RACECOURSE

The Directors and staff of Goodwood Racecourse warmly welcome you back for what

promises to be a fantastic season of racing on the stunning Sussex Downs.

This booklet is dedicated to providing you with all the information you should need

about our 2020 fixtures. Featured in this publication, is the Qatar Goodwood Festival,

taking place from 28 July – 1 August, which attracts some of the best racehorses

in the world.

We have included the provisional race programme, useful information on racecourse

facilities and stabling, and maps and overviews of the various race meetings. If, however,

you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact myself or one of our team.

Useful contact details can be found at the back of this booklet.

Once again there are a total of 14 scheduled race days outside of the Qatar Goodwood

Festival Meeting for the 2020 season, including the three-day May Festival, which

again will be featuring the Goodwood Food Show and the three-day August Bank

Holiday meeting.

INFORMATION FOR OWNERS & TRAINERS

BADGE ALLOCATION:

SINGLE OWNERSHIP & PARTNERSHIPSEvery owner and partnership is entitled to six Owners’ badges per runner. Only those wearing Owners’ Badges will be permitted into the Parade Ring and Winner’s Enclosure. Trainers with runners and jockeys with rides are both entitled to two Owners’ badges.

Owners of horses that are entered but not declared to run, are entitled to two Richmond Enclosure badges. All badges can only be collected from the Owners & Trainers’ Desk at the West Entrance on presentation of your PASS card. Please contact Nick Swannell at [email protected].

Additional badges: We are happy to offer up to 12 Richmond Enclosure badges per runner at half price. These can be purchased at the Owners & Trainers’ Desk on the day. Junior badges (under 18 years) are issued free of charge (excluding Three Friday Nights).

Allocating badges in advance: We do encourage badges to be booked via the online PASS concierge service. However, we would be happy to issue your badges for you provided that we receive an email to [email protected] by 5.00pm on the day before a race day. Please state your PASS card number, the name of the runner, and the names of the people to whom the badges should be given.

SYNDICATESSyndicates are entitled to up to 12 Owners’ badges, subject to a reduced number of complementary lunches. Additional Richmond Enclosure badges can be purchased at half price. We want to make it as easy as possible for syndicate owners to receive their allocation of Owners’ Badges. We ask that the syndicate manager agrees the allocation of badges under their management in advance of the meeting. Please email the list of names of those owners to receive the Owners’ Badge by 5.00pm the day before your horse runs to [email protected].

Please be reminded that it is the responsibility of the syndicate or partnership manager to inform their owners of our dress code and conditions.

Goodwood reserves the right to offer additional Owners’ Badges at their discretion and subject to space, on busy days. Any requests for additional badges should be made in advance of the meeting to [email protected]. Badges are non-transferable across other horses/trainers allcoations.

QATAR GOODWOOD FESTIVAL – SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS 2020 will see the introduction of Parade Ring Passes at Goodwood Racecourse. Sole Owners or Partnerships will be entitled to 6 Parade Ring Passes and Syndicates will be entitled to up to 12 Parade Ring Passes. Trainers with runners on the day will be entitled to one Parade Ring Pass per metal NTF badge. Access to the Parade Ring and Pre-Parade Ring will only be valid on presentation of your Parade Ring Pass. These can be collected from the Owners & Trainers Desk on arrival.

FACILITIESThe Qatar Owners & Trainers’ Pavilion is located in the Richmond Enclosure to the west overlooking the Parade Ring.

Complimentary tea and coffee is available throughout the day, along with a selection of hot and cold canapés. Scones with jam and cream are offered for afternoon tea, and a fully-stocked bar is also available should you wish to purchase any additional drinks.

Exclusive seated viewing for Owners & Trainers is located in front of the Duke’s Box in the March Stand, in the Richmond Enclosure. Accessible viewing is available from the Member’s Bar via the internal lift in the March Stand.

THE OWNERS & TRAINERS’ RESTAURANTThe Owners & Trainers’ Restaurant is situated on the Solent Lawn in the Richmond Enclosure. Single Owners and Partnerships with a runner are entitled to six complimentary luncheon vouchers. Syndicates who have chosen six Owners’ badges are entitled to six complimentary luncheon vouchers whilst syndicates who have chosen 12 Owners’ badges can purchase luncheon vouchers at £35 per head. Additional lunches can be purchased at £35 per head, subject to availability.

PARKINGOwners are entitled to one Car Park 6 (Owners) label per runner. This will be sent to the registered owner from Weatherbys by post prior to the meeting. Free valet parking is also available at the West Entrance to Owners & Trainers with runners. Disabled parking is available on a first come first served basis at the front of Car Park 5 next to the West Entrance.

WINNING CONNECTIONSOwners of winning horses will be presented with a trophy, a TV in a Card of the race, and a memory stick of photographic images. They will also receive a celebratory glass of Champagne in the Owners & Trainers’ Hospitality Suite, with our Owners & Trainers representitive, Gail Brown.

DRESS CODEGentlemen are required to wear a jacket, tie, cravat or polo neck sweater. Boys 16+ are required to follow the Gentlemen’s dress code. Boys under 16 are requested to wear a collared shirt. Ladies & All – No jeans, trainers, shorts or fancy dress.

ACCOMMODATION The Goodwood Hotel is located on the edge of the Goodwood Estate. Owners with a runner at Goodwood can benefit from a complimentary room upgrade, subject to availability, on bed & breakfast bookings for either the night before or after their horse runs. PRIVATE AIRCRAFTGoodwood Aerodrome is situated two miles from the racecourse. Please call 01243 755167 for Air Traffic Control. We also do ask that you inform the the Racecourse on 01243 755161 or [email protected].

Helicopters may land and take off in the centre of the course by prior permission. This will only be permitted between races when there are no horses on the course. Please email [email protected] or call 01243 755161 to request this service.

During the Qatar Goodwood Festival, all aircraft (fixed wing and helicopters) must land and take off from Goodwood Aerodrome. The centre of the course will be closed. Please call Air Traffic Control on 01243 755167 to arrange your arrival and transport to the Racecourse.

SPRING RACING

OPENING SATURDAY, 2 MAY Our feature races on the opening day are devoted to fillies and mares with two Listed contests restricted to them. EBF Stallions Daisy Warwick Stakes run over one mile and four furlongs was won by Enbihaar (rated 105) last year, and the Conqueror Stakes for three-year-olds, and upwards is run over a mile. The joint-most valuable race of the afternoon is a Handicap race run over seven furlongs with £50,000 on offer, won last year by Kimifive (rated 99) for trainer Joseph Tuite.

MAY FESTIVAL: FEATURING THE GOODWOOD FOOD SHOW, THURSDAY 28 – SATURDAY 30 MAYThis year’s May Festival, encompasses three days of back-to-back high quality racing that includes four valuable Listed races: The Height of Fashion Stakes, The EBF Cocked Hat Stakes, The Festival Stakes and finally The Tapster Stakes, with total prize money over the three days of over £490,000.

Thursday hosts The Height of Fashion stakes for three-year-old fillies run over one mile and two furlongs. Often used as a stepping stone for fillies bound for Royal Ascot, this race offers £45,000 in prize money and was won last year by Aloe Vera (rated 96).

Friday’s feature contest is The EBF Cocked Hat Stakes, a Listed race for three-year-old colts & geldings run over one mile and three furlongs for prize money of £45,000. Previous winners include Masked Marvel and Rewilding who both went on to win at Group 1 level. Private Secret (rated 106) took the contest last year before finishing 4th in the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot this year.

Saturday offers in excess of £230,000 in prize money. The Listed Festival Stakes and Tapster Stakes carry prize money of £50,000 and were won respectively last year by Elarqam (rated 116) and Mirage Dancer (rated 117), with Mirage Dancer going on to finish 3rd in the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot, 2nd in the Group 2 Princess Of Wales’s Tattersalls Stakes at Newmarket and 2nd in the Group 3 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate at the Qatar Goodwood Festival. The most valuable contest on the day is the seven-furlong handicap for three-year-olds with prize money of £75,000, won last year by Beat Le Bon (rated 104), who went on to have further success at the Qatar Goodwood Festival.

JUNE RACING

FAMILY RACE DAY, SUNDAY 7 JUNEThe Family Race Day will host two Class 3 handicaps, a seven-furlong contest for three-year-olds and upwards worth £15,000, and a £20,000 two-mile contest for four-year-olds and upwards. Earlier in the card there is a Class 3, 2 year-year-old seller worth £15,000.

THREE FRIDAY NIGHTS, 5 , 12 & 19 JUNENow in its ninth year, Goodwood’s hugely popular ‘Three Friday Nights’ offer an evening’s racing followed by live music and dancing from internationally renowned DJs in the Parade Ring.

Friday 5 June features a six-race card with the feature handicap being the fourth race on the card with prize money of £15,000 on offer.

The most valuable contest on Friday 12 June is a Handicap, for horses aged four and over with prize money totalling £15,000.

Friday 19 June is the last of our Three Friday Night fixtures. A six-race card sees a very competitive blend of handicaps throughout the race card. A total of over £60,000 is on offer with the Class 3 Handicap worth £15,000 our feature race.

Thursday is traditionally Ladies’ Day and to complement this the Qatar Nassau Stakes (Group 1) will be the feature race on the card. Dierdre made history in 2019 for trainer Mitsuru Hashida and Japan, being the first horse from Japan to win at Goodwood and only the second time Japan have won a Group 1 contest in Britain. 2020 looks to be another fiercely competed contest for Europe’s richest 1m 2f race for Fillies and Mares.

It is time for the sprinters to come to the fore on Friday with the King George Qatar Stakes (Group 2) over five furlongs. Battaash proved to be too hot to handle for his rivals for a third consecutive year last year. Can he make it a fourth this year.

The total prize purse for the week exceeds £5million with races each year becoming even more hotly contested. The Unibet Stewards’ Cup (Heritage Handicap) is the feature on Saturday, won last time by Khaadem for trainer Charles Hills.

QATAR GOODWOOD FESTIVAL

28 JULY – 1 AUGUSTAffectionately known as ‘Glorious Goodwood’, the Qatar Goodwood Festival will be run this year between 28 July – 1 August. The eyes of the racing world will be firmly set on the Sussex Downs for our annual showpiece of high quality racing and glamour in this most idyllic of settings.

We would like to thank our sponsors, both new and established, for their support in making this a week to remember for all concerned, with particular thanks going to our headline partner, the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club.

The Group 1 Qatar Goodwood Cup takes centre stage on Day One. The two mile contest was won for an astonishing third consecutive year by the John Gosden trained Stradivarius who went on to win the WH Stayers Million series with a victory at the Ebor Festival.

The Qatar Sussex Stakes (Group 1) is the highlight of day two with a prize purse of £1million. The historic race has featured many ‘duels on the downs’ over the years and we look forward to seeing who will come to the fore this year.

AUGUST BANK HOLIDAY

FRIDAY 28 – SUNDAY 30 AUGUSTFrom a breathtaking fireworks display on the Friday evening after racing, to plenty of family fun on Saturday and Sunday, the magical three-day August Bank Holiday fixture rekindles the nostalgic British summer holidays of yesteryear.

On Saturday the prestigious Group 2 Celebration Mile, won in 2017 by Lightning Spear (rated 117) who went on to win the Qatar Sussex Stakes in 2018, takes centre stage offering £100,000 in prize money. The card also features a valuable Handicap over seven furlongs offering £60,000 to horses aged three and over. The Group 3 March Stakes, run in memory of the late John Dunlop, sees prize money of £100,000. The final headline race on the card is the Group 3 Prestige Stakes, an important test for juvenile fillies, won last year by Boomer (rated 103) for trainer Tom Dascombe.

The Group 3 Supreme Stakes is the feature race on Sunday providing a seven-furlong contest for three-year-olds and upwards for a £60,000 prize fund. Trainer David O’Meara took the prize last year with Suedois (rated 113).

TUESDAY 8 SEPTEMBERThese balmy late summer afternoons are an ideal escape during the working week, offering a chance to experience Goodwood in all its glory with the spectacular seasonally coloured Sussex countryside as a fitting backdrop.

The Tuesday meeting hosts a seven-race card, the highlights of which are two Class 2 Contests both for two-year-olds, one of which being the Peter Willett Conditions Stakes named after our much-missed Goodwood Director who sadly passed away in 2015. The other major race on the card is a two-mile Class 2 Handicap for three year olds and upwards with a prize fund of £20,000.

WEDNESDAY 23 SEPTEMBERThe £50,000 listed Foundation Stakes is the feature race on this card, won in 2017 by the John Gosden trained Monarchs Glen (rated 101) who went on to win the Group 3 Darley Club Stakes. Further competitive action is provided by a £45,000 fillies handicap over one mile and six furlongs for three-year-olds and upwards.

SUNDAY 11 OCTOBERThe final meeting of the season features several handicaps, the best of which being over a distance of one mile and four furlongs. The card also features three 2 year old races which provide the perfect opportunity to see horses that may prosper in big races in the following seasons. The opening race of the day will again be a race over two miles but for jump jockeys only with a £10,000 prize fund on offer. The fixture will celebrate the season in style with a theme of Harvest, Hops & Horseracing before the winter break.

ROA GOLD STANDARD SURVEY The pinnacle of racehorse ownership is going racing with a runner. The raceday experience should be an enjoyable one, and Goodwood is one of many Racecourses’ working to deliver the best possible owners experience. The ROA Raceday Committee is continually seeking to improve the owners’ racecourse experience. Whilst every racecourse is visited annually, the Committee cannot attend every fixture, and feedback from owners and ROA members is therefore a vital part of the process. Your feedback will help the Committee decide upon the annual Gold Standard Awards, and the overall Racecourse of the Year titles.

Our Raceweek Regency Ball gives us the ideal opportunity to honour the commitment of

the inspirational and brilliant women who will be taking part in the Charity Ladies’ Race,

the Magnolia Cup – all of the riders will be joining us for the evening.

Featuring vintage entertainment and a famous match race between two horses at night

through the park, which is entirely lit with flares, just as it was in the 18th Century; it really

is a truly magical and uplifting sight. The whole evening is quite a spectacle, where the great

Regency House comes alive like an early 19th Century film set.

The dress code is Regency and the evening starts with a Champagne reception at 7.30pm.

Tickets are £215 per head, £2,000 per table of 10 or £2,400 per table of 12.
