Information for Submitting Articles to Law Reviews & Journals _____

January 2019

The following are two charts useful for the law review/journal article submission process. The first

chart contains information gathered from the journals’ websites about the following topics:

Methods for submitting an article (such as by e-mail, ExpressO, Scholastica, or regular mail);

Any special formatting requirements;

How to request an expedited review; and

How to withdraw an article after it has been accepted for publication elsewhere.

The second chart contains information about rankings of the journals and the law schools associated

with them. The first three columns are the overall ranking, academic/peer assessment score, and

lawyer/judge assessment score for each school from the most recent U.S. News & World Report

rankings. The other three columns are data about each journal from Washington & Lee’s law review

ranking website. The “citation ranking” is the total number of citations to the journal over the past

eight years. The “impact factor” is the number of citations per article per year. The “combined rating”

is a weighted combination of the citations and impact factor data. You can find more detailed

information on the Washington & Lee website at https://managementtools4.wlu.edu/LawJournals/.

We hope this information is helpful. We provide it with several important caveats:

o First, the charts cover only “general” law reviews, not specialized journals. There are excellent

specialized journals on many topics. Anyone submitting an article to law reviews will want to

consider the specialized journals relevant to their article and particular area of expertise.

o The charts cover 203 schools and their journals. We have tried to be comprehensive; any

omissions are inadvertent, and we’d be happy to hear what we missed so that we can add them.

o We do not mean to imply anything about how much importance, if any, should be given to

numerical rankings of law schools or law journals. These sorts of rankings are certainly an

incomplete, if not badly flawed, way of evaluating schools and journals. We provide the

ranking information because it is something that many people consider to some extent in the

submission process. Obviously each author can decide what to make of it.

o The chart is based on the information provided on each journal’s website. Some journals may

have alternative methods of submission (such as ExpressO or Scholastica) that are not

mentioned on their website and therefore not included here.

For a helpful and more detailed discussion of the submission process and related issues for law

professors, see Nancy Levit, Scholarship Advice for New Law Professors in the Electronic Age,

16 Widener L.J. 947 (2007), at http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=939007.

Good luck with your submissions.

Because this journal publishes

electronically, page limits are not as

Gonzaga Law

Review

Accepts submissions by Scholastica or by

e-mail to [email protected]

Accepts submissions on a rolling basis

and encourages authors to submit work

whenever they believe it is suitable for

publication.

Encourages authors to submit pieces to

Gonzaga Law Review exclusively for two

weeks. During the summer, suggests

authors not submit to other journals until

August 24. Authors submitting on an

exclusive basis should indicate in their

submission e-mail the date on which the

piece will be sent to other journals.

Prefers Microsoft Word.

Double-spaced.

Encourages gender-neutral language

when possible.

Bluebook citation format.

Strongly encourages submissions of less

than 25,000 words.

Include a short abstract detailing how the

argument fits into the current literature

and how the argument differs from those

of other authors.

To enable anonymous review, remove all

identifying information (name, affiliation,

and acknowledgements) from the

manuscript, file name, headers, and

footers. Make sure the title is on the first

page.

[email protected]

If you have another offer for

publication, please request expedited

review via the header in your e-mail

submission. Expedited review provides

no competitive advantage in the

process. Any request for expedited

review for less than three weeks from

Gonzaga’s initial receipt of the piece

may be disadvantaged.

[email protected]

The review process is time-

consuming and extensive, so

please let them know as soon

as possible if you decide to

withdraw your submission.
