Edition 01/2010 Information magazine for the customers, staff and friends of the GEMÜ group
GEMÜ has developed the new GEMÜ 537 manually operated globe valve.
The new valve type uses the same valve bodies as the GEMÜ 534 and 532 actuated designs. Valve bodies in nominal sizes DN 15-50 in cast stainless steel 1.4408 and SG iron GGG 40.3 (EN-GJS-400-18-LT) are
available. The maximum operating pressure for nominal sizes DN 15 - 40 is 25 bar, for DN 50 16 bar. The standard version of these valves can be used up to 180°C and the PTFE gland packing is suitable for steam. Versions for higher temperatures and with other seals are available on request. Connections available are fl anges to EN 1092/PN 16 and
PN 25 form B, length EN 558, series 1. The new manual valves can alsolater be retrofi tted with the pneumatic actuators of types 534 and 532, if required. An ATEX version of these valves is also available on request.

Actuated Globe and Control Valve GEMÜ 520
New nominal sizes and versions The GEMÜ 520 actuated globe and control valve is now also available in smaller nominal sizes DN 32, 40 and 50.
GEMÜ 520 is particularly suitable for use as a control valve for steam, air, water and process lines on account of its membrane actuator. The existing sizes DN 65 – 150 are now extended to smaller nominal sizes DN 32 – 50 to meet customer requirements. New actuator/valvebody versions have also been developed to further increase the range of applications. In sizes DN 32 – 65 the valve can now be usedwith up to 40 bar operating pressurewith valve bodies in cast steel GP
240 H and stainless steel 1.4408. Further new options include valves which can be actuated
with a considerably reducedcontrol pressure of 1.5 – 4 bar,
depending on nominalsize and operating pressure.
The matched GEMÜ range of autoset valve
positioners provide complete throttling
control via PLC or on-board process controllers.

CleanStar® block valves
CleanStar® block valves
Manually and pneumatically operated High Purity diaphragm globe valvesSmall, strong, highly effi cient
The varied application possibilitiesof plastic have provided us with inspiration since the foundation ofour company in 1964. We have incorporated our experience of designing plastic valves gained overthe last 45 years in our latest generation of plastic valves - The GEMÜ block valve.
The design of the valve body and actuators has been implemented using a modular design system. This provides a wide variety of combination possibilities for the most varied of applications. Because of their small space requirement, the valves are particularly suitable for use in modern and compact manifold designs in semi-conductor production.
Due to their design the working media only comes into contact with the valve body and the seat (diaphragm). This means that the valves are particularly suited to thehandling of corrosive media andultra high purity chemicals. They exhibit very low contaminationlevels and are supplied for applications in the microelectronicsand semiconductor industries in accordance with the requirements of SEMI Doc. F57-0301. They can also be used in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries as they satisfy the strict demands of these industrial sectors concerning hygiene and sterility.

GEMÜ 507, 514, 550, 554 – GEMÜ SmartLine HPS – GEMÜ CleanStar®
The GEMÜ range of manual and pneumatic angle seat globe valves are now available with fl anged connections to EN 1092 and ANSI.
The manually operated type 507 and the pneumatically operated types 514 with aluminium piston actuator, 550 with stainless steelpiston actuator and 554 with plastic piston actuator are now availablewith fl anged connections in nominal sizes DN 15 – 50. The new fl anged valve bodies are made of cast stainless steel 1.4435 (AISI 316L). Flanges are to EN 1092/PN25/formB and ANSI class 125/150 RF. In
order to be able to fl exibly react to customer requirements in the mostvaried regions, the fl anges are welded on the basic cast bodies. This ensures good availability and short delivery times. Flanges aremainly used in industrial plant construction as they can be installed and removed more easily comparedto butt weld and threaded connections. The valves are mainly used for control and regulation ofsteam, water as well as slightly corrosive liquid media and gases.

New Flanged Connections
Pressure to reduce production costs in the solar industry, whichproduces solar panels and components, has heavily increased in the last two years and for this reason more and more PP (poly-propylene) pipe systems and valves are being used in wet productionprocesses. GEMÜ has now developed a new low cost valve range with PP bodies called the CleanStar® SmartLine HPS valve.
The basis of these new valves is the metal-free GEMÜ CleanStar®
HP range which is predominantly used for the control of ultra high purity chemicals in semi-
conductor and micro-electronics production. In these applications PFA-HP valve bodiesare mainly used which are in
accordance with strict standards toensure product purity and clean-liness. Based on the GEMÜ Clean-Star® valve, the SmartLine can be supplied with valve bodies in PP grey or PP natural. The standard version with PP valve bodies is not manufactured in a cleanroom so the manufacturing costs of the SmartLine HPS range are less than those for the PFA-HP version. The new valve bodies are available innominal sizes ½" – 1 ½". Connections available are metricspigots for IR butt welding and Flare connections. The operators and shut off diaphragms are from the same modular system as the existing HP versions. For further information on CleanStar® C60 HPS and C67 HPS valves please contact GEMÜ.
Thomas Schulz
GEMÜ SmartLine HPS
New valve range for the solar industry
The GEMÜ CleanStar® valves with PFA-HP valve bodies are primarily used for very corrosive and ultrapure media in semiconductor production. The external actuator parts are usually made of PVDF, which is also the case with the central union nut connecting the valve body and the actuator. Thiscentral union transmits the actuating and sealing forces from the actuator to the valve body and also ensures an external seal. For the majority of applications thechemical resistance of PVDF is suffi cient for the non medium wetted areas of the actuator. In occasional applications, however, there may be a high con-centration of chemicals in the ambient air caused by leaking
fi lters or fi ttings so that the external actuator parts get in contact withthe working medium. The chemical resistance of PVDF is insuffi cientfor chemicals such as TMAH (Tetramethylammonium hydroxide) and KOH (potassium hydroxide) and the strength of the union nut will be impaired. In order to ensurehigh operational safety for these applications a special CleanStar version with a central ECTFE union nut was developed.

GEMÜ 654 – GEMÜ 660 – GEMÜ 602
The GEMÜ 654 stainless steel diaphragm valve has been extended to the small size MG8 (DN 4 – 15).
An additional size has been added tothe GEMÜ 654 valve range
extending these to diaphragm size 8 (MG8) in nominal sizes DN 4 – 15. The bonnet is available with a seal adjuster but also with a stroke limiter as options. The seal adjuster insmall valves in particular serves to protect the diaphragm against over-
compression by the user and thus increases the service life
of the diaphragm. The stroke limiter is used to manually set the required fl ow rate on fully opening the valve.
The Kv values of the small valvesare between 0.5 – 2.2 m³/h, depending on the nominal size and connection. The stainless steel valve bodies are from the proven GEMÜ modular system and are there-fore fully compatible with existingequipment. Connections available are butt weld spigots, clamps and threaded connections to DIN, ASME BPE, BS and JIS. Valves with an EPDM diaphragm are suitable foruse up to 10 bar and with PTFE
diaphragm up to 6 bar operating pressure. The stainless steel hand-wheel and the bonnet are designed to be easily cleanable. The valves are CIP/SIP capable and autoclavable.
With this extended size the GEMÜ 654 range is now available from DN 4 to DN 100.

GEMÜ 654 Stainless Steel Diaphragm Valve
Aseptic diaphragm valve range extended to small nominal sizes
Aseptic fi lling valve GEMÜ 660
Aseptic fi lling valve range extended to small nominal sizesThe aseptic GEMÜ 660 fi lling valve has been extended to the small size MG8 (DN 4 – 15).
The GEMÜ 660 diaphragm fi lling valve wassuccessfully introduced in the beverage industry in 2007. Its main application is the aseptic fi lling of non-carbonated beverages such as still mineral water. Now this valve range has been extended to include the small actuator size for valves with diaphragm size8 which enables fast and safe fi lling of smaller quantities. In addition to standard valve bodies, customer and machine specifi c special versions can be supplied. The control air connectors are positioned in-line with the fl ow direction as standard but can also be supplied at 90° to the fl ow direction.
The Kv values of the small valves are between 0.5 – 2.2 m³/h, depending on the nominal size and connection. The stainless steel valve bodies are from the proven GEMÜ modularsystem and are therefore fully compatible with existing equipment. Connections available are butt weld spigots, clamps and
threaded connections to DIN, ASME BPE, BS and JIS. The valves with EPDM and PTFEdiaphragms are suitable for use up to max. 5 bar operating pressure. The required control pressure is 2 - 6 bar dependent on the design. The valves are easily cleanable and CIP/SIP capable. The maximum fi llingtemperature for beverages is 85°C and sterilisation with steam can be carried out up to 150°C.
Thomas Schulz
GEMÜ 602 Stainless Steel Diaphragm Valve
Now available with seal adjusterThe GEMÜ 602 stainless steel diaphragm valve with stainless steel handwheel is now also available with a manually operated seal adjuster.
Seal adjusters are used to prevent over-closure of manual diaphragm valves. Particularly when elastomer diaphragms (EPDM, FPM etc.) are used, excessive closingforce leads to over-compression of the diaphragm and thus gives a reduced service life. Manual diaphragm valvesin small nominal sizes are particularly affected by over-zealous closure by operators as the forces from just hand use can be more than needed to effect valve sealing. Dependent on the force applied by the user, the diaphragm is compressed in differing degrees. In order to avoid over-compression a seal adjuster can be setso that optimum closure of the valve is ensured while excessive over-compression of the diaphragm is prevented. When the user closes the valve by turning the hand-wheel it only moves to a limit stop which protects the diaphragm. The design also enables setting a minimum fl ow, if required,by keeping the valve from closing completelyin particular applications.
GEMÜ 602 is available in diaphragm size 8 (MG8) and nominal sizes DN 4 – 15. The Kv values of the small valves are between 0.5 – 2.2 m³/h, depending on the nominal size
and connection. The stainless steel valve bodies are from the proven GEMÜ modular system and are therefore fully compatiblewith existing equipment. Connections available are butt weld spigots, clamps and threaded connections to DIN, ASME BPE, BS and JIS. Valves with an EPDM diaphragm are suitable for use up to 10 bar and withPTFE diaphragm up to 6 bar operating pressure. The stainless steel handwheel andthe bonnet are designed to be easily cleanable and the valves are CIP/SIP capable and autoclavable.

With 14 new apprentices and 2 students at the Dual University (DU) Mosbach, GEMÜ, the valve manufacturer in Criesbach, has started the new training year.
In spite of the economic crisis the intake of apprentices has continuedat a high level as we continue to place great emphasis on our owntraining regime as the most important factor in gaining new employees.
In this year, and for this reason, anew training profession, Expert Information Technician with
specialisation in system integration, and the dual study programme Mechanical Engineering in collaboration with the Dual University have been introduced in the range of training offered.
We are looking forward to the next2 ½ to 3 ½ years with our "new-comers" and wish them and all the trainers great fun and success!
