Introduction

IntroductionIn our day-to-day routine, we encounter a whole series oftechnical functions that we have to deal with to some degreeevery day. Right from the early morning, even in privatehouseholds, various actions are required to give us light, heating and hot water. And what happens when we leave thehouse or apartment? In the evening, many of these actions are repeated, and wehave to prowl all round the house or apartment only to adjustlighting, shutters, heating, household appliances, etc. to makeourselves comfortable within our own four walls. With HOMETRONIC, Honeywell offers a system that coordinatesthese functions the way the user wants them. On the one hand, coordinated automation meets the higheststandards of comfort, and on the other hand, it offers energy-optimized modes of operation that can lead tosignificant cost savings.

Wireless CommunicationThe specific advantages of the HOMETRONIC system becomeapparent right from the planning phase. There is no need todraw up wiring diagrams, because the individual roomcomponents receive their information from the central unit, the Hometronic Manager, by radio. All you need to plan for isa mains power supply for the Hometronic Manager. Thisreduces the installation effort, and makes the HOMETRONICsystem especially attractive for later addition (in existingbuildings). The transmission power of the radio communication is designedto work with less than 1 mW1), which means that radio emissionis negligible while reliable data transfer in residential buildingsis guaranteed. Normal partition walls and one ceiling aboveand below are no problem.

Intelligent Linking of Functions48 room addresses for temperatures, light, householdappliance and shutter control and 16 addresses for consumptionmeasurement make it possible to equip any size of residence, right up to the large detached house.

The HOMETRONIC system offers the user the following benefits:All the automatically triggered functions in the separate roomscan be monitored and operated from a single point via theHometronic Manager, or in future by radio remote control. The room temperatures, switching states, light conditions andthe positions of shutters or venetian blinds are then set by theautomatic control system on the basis of variable timerprograms.

In addition, available lifestyle programs allow spontaneousaction at the Hometronic Manager that set the desired reactionsin every room, for example a cozy temperature in the livingroom, light on and the roller shutter closes. In the children'sroom and bedroom, for example, the heating switches toeconomy and the shutters also close.

During your vacation, the linked functions save energy, butthey also provide a safety component by simulating occupation. That is, you tell the Hometronic Manager with the touch of abutton how long you will be on vacation, so that the heatingin all rooms can be lowered to economy temperature. To prevent outside observers from noticing that the house isunoccupied, the linked control functions switch the light onand off and open and close the shutters every morning andevery evening. These functions follow a real-life weeklysequence so as to really simulate the presence of theoccupants.

During the daylight hours, light sensors ensure appropriateshade from the roller shutters to protect the rooms and theirfurniture from excess sunlight.Because the HOMETRONIC knows when the occupants willreturn, they are met with a comfortable temperature in theirhome on their arrival. After that, everything functions asdesired on the basis of the timer programs or spontaneouslifestyle programs.

1) 1 mW = 1milliwatt =̂ 0.001 wattby comparison: cordless telephone: 200 mW ( 200 x 1 mW)

Cellular telephone/radio telephone: 2000 mW (2000 x 1 mW)

For heating control and consumptionmonitoring, the Hometronic Managerundertakes the following tasks:

Room temperature controlis performed by constant adjustment ofa battery-driven miniature motor on theradiators. For underfloor heating systems, the desired room temperature is optimizedby a self-learning logic controller (fuzzylogic) in the floor distribution circuit. For temperature control, the HometronicManager coordinates the switchingprograms for each individual room andtransmits the desired room temperaturesetpoints to the radiator controllers in theindividual rooms or to the underfloorheating controller. 16 room addressesare available for this function.

Individual temperature adjustments arepossible in the individual rooms at anytime either by means of the knob on theradiator controller or at the room sensor/setpoint adjuster (for underfloor heatingsystems).

For energy metering, the HometronicManager totals up all the data receivedfrom the electronic heating costdistributors, heat meters, radio andwater meters or the electricity meters ofa complete residential unit. All theconsumption data for a wholeresidential unit are thus available at onecentral point, the Hometronic Manager. This eliminates the need to read offlarge numbers of meters and the radiotransmission even allows theinformation to be read off at thefront door. This does away with havingto make appointments with the tenants,

and with repeated visits when no-onewas home. This all significantlysimplifies the process of consumptioncost accounting. The mere combination of these twofunctions alone is of special benefit tothe tenant. The Hometronic Managercan provide a trend display of his currentconsumption, e.g. by comparison withthe previous year. The initiative to saveheating costs doesn't just come with theannual heating bill; the trend displaymakes it possible to set lower temperaturesetpoints or to make better use of theeconomy temperature periods.

Light, household appliance androller shutter/venetian blind controlare also important functions of theHometronic Manager. HOMETRONICmodules are available for this purpose. They are simply mounted on thedistributor box of the relevant roller shutteror light circuits or simply inserted intothe plug socket for switching commands. In many cases, there is no need forinstallation of further electrical wiring.

The light control modules have botha dimmer and an on/off function. Theyare suitable for lighting systems withpowers from 60 up to max. 300 watts. The light switches already installed inthe respective control loop can still beused to switch the lights on and offmanually in the room.

The switch modules are suitable forcontrolling (ON/OFF) electricalconsumers and appliances (e.g. coffeepercolator). The switches of the controlloop in question maintain their normalfunction for direct manual control of theconsumers.

The roller shutter/venetian blindmodules are suitable for controllingtubular motors. They receive the desiredposition of the roller shutter or venetianblind in percent from the HometronicManager (for venetian blinds also theangle of the slats). The local switchesfor manual override remain functional, allowing the shutters to be raised orlowered locally.

External AccessHOMETRONIC also offers the capabilityof convenient, remote access viaInternet, or by voice recognition viatelephone or cellphone.

Application

ApplicationFor wireless acquisition of consumptiondata from radiators (heating costdistributor), (underfloor) heatingdistributors (heat flow meter) and hot/cold water (water meter). Using aninterface module, other consumptionvalues can also be evaluated, e.g.electricity, gas, etc. All data can be read out withoutentering the apartment, thus doingaway with having to make appointmentswith the tenants and the need for atenant to be at home. The trend display of the consumptionvalues on the Hometronic Manager isan incentive to save energy and thuscreates additional savings effects. For central, apartment-specific dataacquisition and storage for up to16 electronic Kundo heating costdistributors. All the data can thus beeasily read off from a central point inthe apartment. This makes the systemparticularly well suited to retrofitting in existing buildings and in new buildingsthanks to the minimized planning andinstallation work.

Expansion possibilitiesThe following application expansionsare possible:Individual room temperature controlwith radiator/underfloor heating withHR 50/HCE 60, HCW 22, etc.Roller shutter, venetian blind and awningcontrol with HA 30, HB 05/15, etc.Light control with HD 30, HS 30, HS 20.(Household) appliance control withHS 30, HS 20.

FunctionsWireless, individual measurement valueacquisition via electronic heating costdistributors, heat flow meters, electronicwater meters or pulse counters. Exactconsumption measurement by displayingthe value for the previous year or previousmonth and the current month consumptiontrend for the measurement group inquestion or for the individual measurementpoint. The individual consumptionvalues are additionally buffer-stored atthe measurement point where thecurrent consumption value and thevalue for the previous year can be readoff directly. With automatic function check, test program and opening/sabotagedetection.Central display of the current monthtrend and consumption units on theHometronic Manager HCM 200.

Radio technology

A special feature of the Hometronic is the wireless transmissionof the switching signals. This makes the system very adaptable, allowing it to be used anywhere that room temperatures areto be regulated, heating costs are to be monitored, and rollershutters, shades and lights are to be controlled. Installation isvery simple, because there is no connecting wiring to be laid.Ideal prerequisites for both occupied houses and new systems. We have developed special radio technology to take care ofsafe data transmission in the areas of application that wecater for.

Together with our customers, we have already had the best ofpractical experience with the first Hometronic system forcontrolling underfloor heating in recent years.Progressive further development has now led to our optimizingthis radio technology to such a degree that functions of hometechnology other than heating control can now be handled bya reliable transmission system in residential buildings.

Radio technology

The radio communication transmission power is designed towork with less than 1 milliwatt1), which means that radiation isnegligible, while safe data transmission in dwelling houses isguaranteed.

With normal partition walls and one ceiling above and below, the range of the signals is approx. 25 to 30 meters. Rangesup to 100 meters can be achieved if there are no partitionwalls, for example, in large living rooms or with ”openarchitectures”.

Transmission power, signal range

The radio technology that we have developed has been testedaccording to ETS, and operates in the reliable ISM wavebandbetween 433.05 and 434.79 MHz. On the development side,we have taken steps to avoid interference by outside transmitters. The transmitter in each Hometronic component has its ownserial number. After the "teach-in", the allocation that takesplace as part of the start-up, this serial number becomes partof the transmission protocol. This ensures that the respectivereceiver module reacts only to its allocated transmitter module, and carries out the instruction correctly. As a result, it is possible to operate several Hometronicsystems with no trouble in several dwellings in one building.

This technology also ensures that extraneous signals are notinterpreted as switching commands. Our radio technology is also fully prepared for the worst case,in which some extraneous device trans-mits permanently onthe same frequency, and thus jams the Hometronic's datatransmission. Our technology transmits on individual frequencieswithin the ISM waveband, and therefore almost always finds away to transfer data reliably.Jamming of frequencies within the Hometronic system is almostimpossible, because transmissions are in the order of millisecondsin length, and are staggered.

Radio technology licensed under ETS 300 220 (European Telecommunications Standard)

Electrical connection

Electrical connections are confined to the power supply forthe Hometronic Manager, and for the roller shutter and lightmodules, which are mounted directly on the distributors ofthe respective circuits anyway.

Hometronic Manager HCM 200A transformer is needed for the power supply. Theconnection is made via the mounting (see figure) with eitherthe mains-plug transformer HN 10, the flush-mountedtransformer HTU 10, or the switch cabinet transformerHTS 10.

Hometronic Roller Shutter/Venetian BlindModule HA 30Connecting button and motorThe figure opposite shows the wiring for the connection ofthe switch/button and roller shutter motor. Reference will bemade to the designations of the terminals in the furtherinstallation instructions.

All buttons and switches must be designed for 230 V, andmust conform to VDE guidelines.1. If necessary, replace old switches or buttons with the new

ones as described above.2. Connect the shutter motor to terminals M l̂, Mvl and N

directly to the motor. 3. Connect the buttons for "Up" and "Down" to terminals T l̂,

Tvl and L.4. Connect mains voltage to terminals L and N.

Install Lock-Out Protection HAC 30 (optional)You can connect a lock-out protection device to the HA 30.The lock-out protection device prevents inadvertent closingof a shutter, for example on an open patio door, while youare outdoors.Use an encapsulated Reed contact on the door as a lockoutprotection device.

When the door is open, the HA 30 ignores any "close"command from the Hometronic Manager or button.1. Attach the switch to the door in such a way that it assumes

the mentioned states.2. Connect the cable to the HA 30 by means of the supplied

screw terminal.

Hometronic Boiler Feedback Module HK 10This functional unit consists of the switch module HS 30and the room sensor HCF 22. This functional unit is usedwhen the central heating circuit is controlled by anothermake of controller, and not an MCR…

It can be used to activate the following functions:

1. As soon as Hometronic demands heat for regulation ofthe room temperature, the HS 30 uses the voltage-freeswitch contact to switch the heating pump or the boiler(burner) on.

2. HCF 22 serves as a frost protection function (accordingto the test-room method). The desired frost-protectiontemperature can be set at the HCM 200.
