Dear Freshmen,

First of all, congratulation to your successful entrance exam that is also a rightfulregard of your high school studies.

Thank you for choosing us in hope we shall be worthy to your advanced trust.

Entering the University a new world will open up to you which provides you withfreedom, is more colourful and if your choice was right it will stand closer toyour heart.During your academic years you can prepare for your profession, find manyfriends for life or even your future spouse.

Our university with ten faculties offers many possibilities for those who want toeducate themselves even beyond their field of profession. Undergraduateresearch projects are available for those who are interested in academicresearch and you can also acquire its methodology or taste the delight ofdiscovery.

The city of Pécs with its 2000 year-old past offers a marvellous milieu, unlimitedcultural possibilities and a unique Mediterranean atmosphere and climate toyour academic studies. These will make you feel a little bit like a real Pécsinhabitant as you approach your studies’ end.

I have faith that your academic years would be spent in the spirit of preparing ingood mood and vivid, with in-depth studies and activities connected to yourchosen profession.

I repeatedly thank you for choosing us and I ask you to be a real student with allof the challenges, success and delight connected to this way of life.

For this I wish you much power, stamina, energy and good health as the Rectorof the University of Pécs,

Attila MISETA, rector of the University of Pécs

Dear Young Colleague,

Let me express my warmest greetings on the occasion that you are aboutto start your medical studies at the University of Pécs Medical School. Bymaking this decision you have started a wonderful but tough laboriousprofession.

Now as you start your studies with the experience of the successfulentrance exams and the expectations for exciting new challenges, let megive you a short overview of what awaits you. While acquiring your chosenprofession in the coming decade you will become a highly esteemed, excellent professional and you will practice as an honored specialist of yourfield.

It might not be a surprise for you that you are facing a continuous, life-longlearning.It is well known that science is progressing in accelerating steps. This isespecially true in the field of bio-medical sciences. The advance of thesciences can be demonstrated by the “half-lifetime” of medical science –by the period in which half of our knowledge in a scientific branchbecomes renewed. This period of time is estimated to be an average of 3to 4 years. During your career this surely will become even shorter. In thelight of this, the sad fact is that half of the material you learn in the firstyears of your studies will become obsolete by the time you graduate.Fortunately this fast “deterioration” affects mostly facts, i.e. lexicalknowledge.Basic principles and basic relations are more permanent – some of themhave proven to be constantly valid despite the challenges of centuries. Therefore, throughout your studies you should focus on understandingthese long lasting principles and basic relations. The lexical details serveprimarily as means of understanding and learning these.

The aim of the medical training is to train you to become a theoreticallyprepared professional with reliable practical skills, being entitled to treatpatients of your own: i.e. to become a specialist. Depending on the field ofspecialization this period lasts 10 to 13 years. It is separated into two parts:the graduate and the post-graduate training.

The design of the graduate medical training – the 6 years at a medical schoolyou are about to start – is to provide you with both theoretical and practicalknowledge that are equally important in every branch of medicalspecializations.

The purpose of this period is to become familiar with the basiccharacteristics of the healthy and ill human body; and to acquire the basicsin medical sciences, to gain ambition and methodology of acquiringknowledge and of continuous self-training. During the graduate medicaltraining you will learn the most important diagnostic and therapeuticprocedures (and you can observe the infrequent cases at least once). Sixyears cannot be enough – maybe a whole lifetime could not be enough – tolearn every diagnostic and therapeutic procedure at skill-level, therefore thiscannot be an aim of the graduate training.

In these six years you only have to acquire enough practical knowledge thatyou need to know from the fields of other specialists e.g. as much as afuture psychiatrist should know about a cardiac surgical procedure (just tomake him/her able to answer a patient’s question in this relation), or whatshould be known for an orthopedic surgeon (for the same reason) abouttreating stroke.

The graduate medical training is finished with the graduation ceremony. Fora layman, often even for medical students it is not obvious that this event isonly an intermediate step of the medical training, it closes only the firstphase of it. Having received his/her degree, the young "doctor of medicine"is far from being a real doctor yet. They do not possess all the skills requiredfor healing even in a narrow field, nor the proper practical experiences andcomplementary specific knowledge. Accordingly – until they have passed thespecialist’s exam – they can only have limited authority to workindependently, to treat patients without supervision, and therefore theyonly have limited responsibility to their patients.

During the postgraduate medical training (also called resident-training ormedical specialist’s training) – based on the comprehensive theoreticalknowledge gathered during the graduate training – the future specialists willthoroughly master a selected branch of the medical sciences and especiallygain diagnostic and practical therapeutical skills. This period takes 4 to 7years at the end of which they receive the specialist’s degree (testimonial).Only from that very moment do they become real, responsible doctors, andbecome authorized – within the chosen specialization – to practice medicalactivity independently.

Certainly, their knowledge and skills acquired this way become obsolete verysoon if not refreshed regularly. The organized form of maintaining up-to datemedical knowledge is called the specialists’ Continuing Medical Education(CME) or life-long learning. Hungary has joined the international practice ofchecking the self-training of the specialists every five years. The specialist’sexam becomes invalid and the license will be withdrawn from those who donot document the required amount of professional development(participating at trainings, conferences, publishing scientific papers, exhibiting professional development-related results).

Let us now take a look at the "immediate future", about how the graduatetraining goes. The six years of the studies are divided into four, relatively wellseparated phases, the so-called modules. These are the Basic Module, thePreclinical Module, the Clinical Module, and the Rotational Year.

The Basic Module comprises the first two educational years. During these yearsyou will learn the morphology and functions of the healthy human bodyincluding the mechanisms of the basic life-processes. Within this block there arealso subjects (like Biophysics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Informatics,Anthropology) that partly serve as bases for other subjects (e.g. Pharmacology,Psychology, etc.) to be studied later.

The next module is the Preclinical Module, which lasts one year. The aim of thisphase is to provide you with knowledge on the development of illnesses, on themechanism of pathological procedures, and on the basic structural andfunctional alterations of the ill human body and organs. Here you will also getacquainted with the microorganisms, the basics of pharmacology and – aspropedeutics – you meet patients for the first time.

The Clinical Module and the Rotational Year consist of three years, and serve asthe second half of the graduate medical training. In these modules you will get ashort introduction into every medical field. Most of the lessons are practices, primarily bedside teaching, where you acquire basic diagnostic skills andobserve (and even perform some of) the most important diagnostic andtherapeutic procedures. The sixth year (the final or "Rotational" Year) is a special one. There are nolectures here, and essentially you will face no new studies either: during a wholescholar year – according to a prescheduled plan – students take part in practicesin direct contact with patients at the patient wards of the most importantclinical subjects. Each block (clinical subject) in this year will be finished with arespective final exam. The year itself will be completed with the final closing(clinical board) exam and of course with the graduation ceremony.

During the Clinical Module and Rotational Year, the students must also preparea thesis and defend it. This scientific work is to be prepared by every student inyears. With individual consultation provided by lecturers, the thesis is asummary of a student’s scientific activity – either experimental or theoretical. The thesis is evaluated by lecturers and should be "defended" in a formal oralpresentation before the student is admitted to the clinical board exam. Thedefense of the thesis is the legal basis for having the title "M.D." for all studentsreceiving a degree certificate of doctor of medicine.

In this period the "Booklet for Clinical Skills" also plays an important role.

This booklet, which is handed out to students upon entering PreclinicalModule, lists all the components of practical knowledge and skills that arerequired of everybody receiving medical diploma, but cannot be acquiredduring regular practices because of the characteristics of the medical work(patients with certain illnesses are not necessarily available at a given point oftime), or because its acquisition takes time. The content of the booklet was compiled by leading clinicians with many yearsof careful work.

The Medical School has organized a wide, partly international clinical networkwhere our students are welcome and where medical specialists help toperform the required clinical skills and certify their acquisition in the booklet.

One of the preconditions of obtaining a diploma is that the acquisition ofevery item in the booklet is certified.

The three clinical summer practices are organic parts of the medical training.During the practices students take part in patient care activities under thesupervision of specialists through one month in full-time.During the Summer Practice in Hospital Care after the first academic year theybecome acquainted with the structure and working principles of the hospitaldepartments and acquire experiences in patients’ hospital care. The practice in Internal Medicine after the third and the practice in Surgeryafter the fourth year provide excellent opportunities to gain experience in themost important medical methods.

In the credit system it is the students’ own responsibility to organise theirstudies, from composing their list of courses for the semester or the privatetimetable, to set the exam period schedule with all the necessary exams, oreven synchronise different obligations and deadlines. On the following pageswe provide background information for this task.

The Faculty itself is built up of 52 teaching departments (theoreticaldepartments and clinics) and of many more "joint" organizations. Everytheoretical department (the "institutes") and a part of the university hospitalsand clinical departments are located on the medical campus: the group ofbuildings lying between Szigeti út and Ifjúság út. The rest of the universityhospitals and clinical departments are located at different points of the city.

The theoretical institutes teach mainly the subjects of the Basic Module. Theyconduct outstanding scientific work – even compared with internationalstandards.

At the university hospitals and clinical departments – apart from teaching andscientific activity – patient care is going on at a high level. The universityhospitals primarily treat patients who - due to lack of instruments orprofessional experience elsewhere – cannot be treated in other hospitals in theregion. The patient-care activity of the hospitals is coordinated by the ClinicalCenter (CC), while their teaching and experimental work – including thepostgraduate medical training – is controlled by the Dean of the Medical School.

The Faculty works on the basis of several regulations.

The Higher Education Act has centralized and standardized the functions of theuniversities. Therefore the University of Pécs Medical School functions inaccordance with the rules of the whole university.

The most important regulations for students are the Code of Studies andExaminations (CoS) and the Code of Allowances and Benefits (CCB "Code of Feesand Benefits").

We suggest everyone to study these relatively extensive documents verycarefully because – just like regulations in general – among the prohibitiveprovisions – they contain an extremely large amount of information calling yourattention to many opportunities, e.g. student rights. Also this is the source ofdetailed information about the differentiated system of safeguarding students’interests as well.

Based on our experience, unreliable rumors and false information together withthe ignorance of the rules can cause misunderstandings and inconvenience forstudents. In these cases if the students are brought face to face with the rulesapplicable usually for decades at the university, they will have the falseimpression that "the rules are always changing". That is the reason why thestudents are asked to use the authentic source of information which is thewebsite of the Registrar’s Office of the University of Pécs, Medical School.

As a first step, our students must matriculate (enrol). With this act he/sheaccepts the student status offered as a result of the successful admissionexamination.Matriculation is an act resulting in a legal contract between the University andthe student.Within this contract the student accepts responsibility for knowing andkeeping the regulations of the University binding him/her;and the University responsibly promises not to alter these regulations duringthe semester without the previous agreement of the students. Therefore thecurriculum, form of exam, etc. can not be changed arbitrarily.

The training consists of half-year units (semester), with the exception of thefinal or rotational year, which is a whole, undivided academic year.

Each semester- starts with a 1 or 2-week registration period (R1-R2),

- when the first step is to register for the semester (activate or make itpassive) (in the first semester it is replaced with matriculation) and

- the student is to choose and register for subjects and its courses forthe semester,

- continues with a 14-week „instruction period” (S1-S14), when classes –lectures, practices and seminars – take place,

- and closes with a exam period (V1-V7). In the exam period onlyexaminations are held. Check-ups regarding learning materials areexecuted during the instruction period, and can be accounted for as a partof the exam result.

Within the instruction period there are so called odd (*) and even (**) weeksof instruction.

In the spring semester the 2-week registration period is also the last 2 weeksof the previous semester’s exam period.

In the spring semester one week (in addition to the normal 14 weeks) is notnumbered and is a spring break for the students in their 1-5th year.

You probably have noticed that we work – just like most of the universities ofthe world – according to the so-called credit system (ECTS). This systemadjusts more to individual fields of interest of the students, provides largerfreedom of choice, is more flexible and is meets more the internationalpractice. Also it helps the mobility of the students between institutions andthe recognition of their diplomas internationally.

In the credit system – within a certain limit – the students are free to choosewhich subject to learn, when, and might create a preferential course schedulereflecting their personal interest more.

In contrast to the former – more rigid – system, when everything waspredicted and prescheduled for the students, a possibility to build a personalstudy program lays a heavy burden on the students as the price of a greaterfreedom.

In order study efficiently it is recommended to plan your studies and examswith proper precaution; and please read the regulation (CoS) on bookingcourses and the exams most carefully.

Courses can be classified into three categories.

During their studies students must accomplish ALL obligatory subjects in orderto graduate. Among them are the criterion requirements, which end only bygetting the semester closing signature – these are the Physical Educationclasses and typically the summer professional practices.

Non-obligatory subjects are a rich assortment of subjects, from whichstudents are to choose according to their interest, this way acquiring 20% ofcredits required for graduation. Elective subjects (15% of sum) are usuallyprovide additional information to the core curriculum, optional subjects (5%)are informative, interesting studies less strictly related to obligatory subjects.

Information about subjects to take up you’ll find in the curriculum of youryear of admission, and the detailed information about subjects available forthe semester are provided in the course description booklets.Making a personal course plan might seem overly problematic, you mightfollow the recommended curriculum provided by the Curriculum Committee– following it strictly will make you able to finish your studies on time. Ofcourse, you might decide not to follow it, but please note, that thosefollowing the recommended curriculum are privileged during the courseregistration.

The recommended curriculum contains the list of the obligatory subjects forthe 6 years of training (obligatory subjects and criterion requirements), theirprerequisite subjects (max. 3 subjects that have to be completed previouslyor parallel) and their the recommended semesters. The recommendedcurriculum is a part of the curriculum, the excerpt of it, therefore its details(except for the course director or in rare but well-founded cases theprerequisite subjects) do not change throughout the studies of the student.

The set of programme booklets contain descriptions of obligatory and non-obligatory subjects – but it is valid only for that given academic year. The programme booklet of obligatory subjects discusses only the obligatorysubject versions that are scheduled for the students who follow theirrecommended curricula.Students can gain information about the content and means of successfulcompletion of subjects: general and synthesizing description, list and orderof planned classes, obligatory and recommended literature, criteria ofacceptation of the semester (missed and made-up classes), planned check-ups, exam topics, other requirements, etc.

The timetable contains schedule for courses of students following theirrecommended curricula of a major. The timetable shows- lectures (printed horizontally: all study groups attend together), and- practicals and seminars (printed vertically – only students of that given

study group attend). For small group classes the study groups are assigned by the Registrar’sOffice at the beginning of the first semester – and this setting does notchange throughout the studies of the student (only in really reasonablecases).

Registering for normal courses** Normal course: type of course with classroom activities, in contrary with the exam courses, where there are no classroom activities, only exam chances are

provided

For obligatory subjects and criterion requirementsThere will be one lecture course (if the subject includes lectures) (marked as –E),and for practices and seminars as many as the number of expected study groups.Practice (-G) and seminar (-S) courses are allied with study groups, which isindicated at the end of the course codes. (e.g. MEA-AAA1-G-A4).Lecture, practice and seminar courses offer classes in the timetables. To manage education, a technical course is launched for practice and seminar partsof subjects (marked as –G-T0 or –S-T0) each. These technical courses do not appearwith class times in the timetable.

Students registering for the subject should take one course for each type launchedfor the subject.

As the main trend, students following their recommended curricula can register forcourses allied with their study group or the T0 technical courses. At the beginning of the registration period students following their recommendedcurricula are preferred from course registration point of view, those not followingthe recommended curriculum (failed subjects or ha passive semesters) can only signup for T0 in this period, and are allowed to sign up for to „real” practice andseminar courses only later – using the remaining spots.

One should choose to sign up for a technical course if (s)he can not sign up forcourses belonging to study groups (e.g. group –G-A3 would be his/her course but(s)he wants to attend –G-A4 or (s)he does not follow his/her recommendedcurriculum and has no special preference for which group to attend). Studentsregistering for technical courses are redirected to „real” courses by the coursedirector (usually based on the customs at the department, maybe taking thestudent’s whish into consideration – but always considering the available spots). This is normally done until the end of the 2nd week of instruction

Since students are allowed to attend classes of courses they are signed up for inNeptun, it is also in his/her interest to get redirected to „real” courses from T0 assoon as possible.

For elective / optional subjects and physical education coursesUsually there will be one lecture course, and also only one practice and one seminarcourse launched (if the subject contains such type of hours). However, the course director may decide on launching more than one practice orseminar courses. The difference may arouse from different time schedule of theteacher giving the classes. The end of the course code usually refers to thesedifferences. (e.g. –H17 or GRA). The student is free to chose any of the availablecourses – but still needs to sign up for one of all the course types.

When to register for the different types of courses?

Course books, notes, the library, and with a growing intensity the Internetare available for individual studies. The latter is used by many departmentsof the Faculty to share teaching materials. For those not having Internetaccess at home or at the dormitory we have an increasing number ofcomputers in educational cabinets and free wireless internet access at mostof the main buildings of the University.

The medical training is traditionally practical by nature. There is a need todevelop numerous skills and experiences that are indispensable for themedical work. These can only be achieved through practices on teachingpreparations and in direct contact with patients. Considering all thesebeside the mainly practical sort of exams, the attendance on practices isstrictly checked.

Not one activity goes smoothly without being observed andclassified/graded at execution. To inspect study work we use check-ups.

At the university type and nature of check-ups differ significantly from thoseobserved at high schools Here students do not experience the threat of dailyoral tests. In many cases the first checking happens in the exam period atthe end of the semester. Unfortunately it frequently happens that those whodo not keep with the course of the classes regularly and postpone theirstudies will not be able to acquire the large amount of material in theavailable time and therefore they must repeat the course. It is well knownworldwide that medical training requires the largest amount of material tolearn. This is not only manifested in a longer, six year-long graduateuniversity training, but in the amount of material to be learnt during thesemesters, which is usually much larger compared to most of the othermajors. We would like to remind you that the instruction period should beused for studying. The exam period is for the revision of the already learnedstudy materials and for taking exams. We regret to inform you this way, butthe high rate of failed exams in the first years of studying proves thatstudents frequently ignore these facts.

Besides the lack of mid-term regular checking, the following fact also raisesthe number of unsuccessful exams. Those entering the medical faculty werethe best students in the secondary school or high school where they wereused to be successful with smaller effort than others ("at half power"). Nowthese "best ones" make up the field and the average of them is going to bethe standard, where the method of "half power" will not necessarily result insuccess for most.

The situation is made even worse by the possibility to choose the exam datefreely. To support individual studying, we made it possible for students toselect the exam date within the exam period when they would like to sit forthe exam and this date can be shifted virtually any times. Unfortunately thispossibility resulted in serial postponing of the exams, many students "slip"out of the exam period, and failing to complete the exam requirements theymust repeat the course. Many of these students are actually prepared forthe exam properly but they postpone their exams due to their fear of theexam.

22

Possibilities (excerpt from the CoS. Reading the original document isirreplaceable!

The student can try completing a subject in 3 semesters (a subject can be takenup max. 3 times to complete it)

The first of these 3 tries must be a normal course, the other two (in casethe semester closing signature is granted at the first try AND the coursedirector offers such course) can be exam courses.

Regarding a subject, the max. number of failed exams is 5 (summing up theexams during the max. 3 semesters) – absences do not count

Regarding a subject, the first („exam”) and second („retake exam”) exam chancesare free, the rest are considered „repeated retake exams” and a fee is to paid – inthis case absences count, and not only in the given semester

In a given semester there can be 3 exam chances (A, B, C) in one subject and as a4th (D) the dean’s equity (special permission that can be granted once during thestudies) can be used. In this point of view, the first exam chance can be usedduring the pre-scheduled exam period.

Knowing the regulations, the student is to manage his/her examperiod, taking available exam spots and rules for signing up anddropping dates into consideration.

Exam registration:To drop an exam: 2 workdays before, until 9 a.m.To sign up for: 1 workday before, until 9 a.m.

e.g.. Exam scheduled for Dec. 21: to drop: until Dec. 19, 9 a.m. to take up: until Dec. 20, 9 a.m.

BUTexam scheduled for Dec. 27 (and 22nd and 23rd are weekend days, and Dec. 24th - 26th are Christmas, so not workdays):

to drop: until Dec. 20, 9 a.m., to take up: until Dec. 21, 9 a.m.!!!!

Last but not least, I would like to call your attention to the great opportunityof the Student Research Society (TDK) (Undergraduate Research) work.

The departments and institutes offer opportunities for interested studentsto take part in the department’s scientific and teaching work as a TDKmember, usually after successfully having passed the exam in that givensubject. During TDK work students are granted possibility to try their handsat the scientific activity of the department and may be provided with theopportunity to act as a teaching assistant to gain experience in teaching aswell.

High-level scientific results, presentations, publications regularly originatefrom the work of our TDK members.

Beside the fact that practically all university teaching careers started as aTDK work, even those wishing to apply for non-university positions, collectan irreplaceable knowledge or skills from their TDK work, and are morelikely to be able to handle the required scientific literature and to be able topresent their observations to colleagues.

Therefore I would like to encourage you to consider the departments asyour possible TDK "home" from now on. When choosing, please considerthat the topic of the scientific activity in several departments is notablydifferent from what would be expected based on the subject they teach.

For those who are interested in instructing or would like to get experiencedin that field, the „Circle of Demonstrators” (DDK) offers a very goodopportunity. This system is already used actively by some of our institutes. We plan to develop and promote it among students in the upcoming periodof time. Within its frames upper years’ more experienced students canparticipate in organizing classes, take part in the development of teachingmaterials and carry out practices and seminars as assistant instructors.

It is our pleasure to recommend you our Simulation Educational Center (theMediSkillsLab) to practice clinical medical and dental skills with the supportof instructors and peer-demonstrators: an opportunity for guided, yetindividual practice.

Colleges for Advanced Studies at our Faculty are• for General Medicine major the Romhányi György Szakkollégium,• for Biotechnology major the Cholnoky László Szakkollégium,• and the Grastyán Endre Szakkollégium named for the faculty’s

honourable former professorThese colleges provide our highly inquisitive, talented students thepossibility to deepen their public and professional activities.

In medical training gaining nursing and other sanitary experience is highlyvaluable. Therefore we encourage our students – as a complement for theirstudies – to participate in the work of patient wards, as voluntary helper or– following a training – even as nursing assistant or nurse. In the form ofcompleting courses regarding these activities credit points can be collected.

The Feedback system

At the Faculty our aim is to provide high-level, ever developing educationthrough implementing a well-operated quality control system. A key feature isto continuously collect feedbacks and to react knowing the values. These feedbacks regarding the recent state of our education are partlyreceived from out students – using the feedback system.

Students are invited to express their opinions in more topics in everysemester. They access questionnaires in Neptun in certain periods. Thequestionnaires are in connection with subjects or lectures or exams. Filling insuch questionnaires is in every cases anonym (the questionnaire filled in is inno way connected to the person filling it in, only the fact that the student hasfilled in a questionnaire is reported).

Among the feedback activities the most important is the one evaluatingobligatory subject and their practice leaders. Therefore students filling in ALLof those questionnaires in a given semester are granted the 1 day earlierexam registration bonus in their next active semester in return.

You as a student having just started his/her studies can also be granted thisearly registration bonus even in your first exam period – by filling in thefreshmen questionnaire. In the further semesters you’ll have obligatorysubjects to evaluate and to take the advantage.

More information is available at the home site of the Feedback Committee about thefeedback system.Dean's Order no. 7/2013 (December 20) - earlier viability for students to take up examsafter having filled in feedback questionnaires on teaching at the Medical School

When organising the education for a faculty, harmonising the everyday co-operation ofmore than 3000 students and appr. 500 teachers is the task. This would be impossiblewithout the rules in legislations (e.g. CoS) and without the computed system guaranteeingkeeping the rules and offering the given possibilities.

As of 2016 UP chose Neptun system as its education-organisation software.

Students have access to this system through a web-based surface. The necessary loginname and password are issued by the Registrar’s Office.During out of office hours the Service Desk is also authorized to issue password for the website. (extension 36006, [email protected]).

This username-password combination can also beused e.g. for accessing Wi-Fi at the campus.Since mistyping the password 10 times result in a2-hour ban from any system using thiscombination, after a password-modification it isvital to immediately re-set the password on everytools using it – these tools usually automaticallytry logging in and so it is very easy to collect the10-wrong-answer situation.

It is highly recommended to thoroughly get acquainted with the Neptun web site – a greatamount of useful information can be accessed regarding the state of the studies of astudent. (E.g. „how many elective credits do I have?”)

It is also recommended to log in to the site more times weekly even outside the normalregistration periods since usually learning materials for courses are available for downloadand also one can receive messages into the Neptun mailbox.

In every semester the activation, the registration for subjects and courses or for exams arevalid only if performed in Neptun and (name)lists and data stored in Neptun are current.

Throughout using Neptun actions are logged (e.g. registration or de-registration), theseactions can be checked upon by the Registrar’s Office with the exact time of the action.

Recently the username is the so-called Neptun-ID (a personal ID). Users already entered into theformer system (ETR) however will use the former ID: EHA-Code as a username and manyapplications still ask for EHA-codes: in case you do not have a EHA-code, give the Neptun-ID asusername.

Protect your user account:

- Use strong passwords- Do not let others have access to

your password (do not pass iton, do not leave it unattended,do not leave your tools whenlogged in)

- Make sure to set new passwordregularly

About dress code

You intend to become doctors, and as in case of every profession, medicine

has its own formal rules.

Preparing for a professional life learning desirable manners and appearance is

also a part of the „program”.

The doctor in his/her position should show collectedness, preparedness,

discipline, trustworthiness and is to meet the professional (hygienic)

requirements as well.

Of course, as a medical student for everyday use a young-style, casual wear is

acceptable (as long as it meets the necessary hygienic requirements), but at

official events (such as classes, clinical practices, especially at exams,

conferences) students should adapt to the prestige of the Faculty and the

traditionally conservative style of the medical profession, suggesting to be

aware of the formal regulations of their chosen profession.

At exams it shows confidence to dress according to Faculty dress code and

please note, that your examiners are usually older than you…

1. Activate the semester 2. Sign up for the subject 3. Choose course(s)One subject might be covered by more than one course (e.g. lecture andpractice and/or seminar courses are needed)You may attend the class only if you have the subject and the courseregistered in Neptun!

Check out these to do the subject/course registration properly:- Code of Studies and Examinations: English translation online (not up-to-date)

- E.g. conditions of dismissal: how many times can you take a subject, etc.- Recommended curriculum: online

- Which obligatory subjects to take up in this semester- Timetable for obligatory courses: online

- When do I have classes for my obligatory courses- Course descriptions: online

- Details of obligatories. Which electives and optionals to take- List of available courses (with schedules and classrooms) – in Neptun

- When are my chosen courses: can I get there on time? - Is there available spot for me?

- Chart of classrooms – or see the end of this booklet, in the maps section- Places are given as room ID-s. Where is my chosen course?

Pre-requisitesAll subjects have their recommended semesters and most of them havepre-requisite subjects. The semester is really only a recommendation, butworth paying attention to. The pre-requisites are the ones limiting whenyou can take the subject.- Pre-requisite in advance: the prescribed subject must be accomplished

before taking the desired subject (e.g. OAA-MB2-T completed)- Parallel pre-requisite: the prescribed subject must be accomplished

before or taken in the same semester with the desired subject (e.g.OAA-MB2-T parallel)

The „in advance” type is checked for by the system, but in case of parallelpre-requisite you must make sure you have that subject accomplished ortaken up.In case after the course registration period it turns out that you have signedup for a subject which requires a parallel pre-requisite that you do nothave, the subject is deleted from your course list. The course director has the right to prescribe as a prerequisite ofregistering for the course the valid and „eligible” result from the yearlymedical eligibility test.

Why?• Because you’ll spend 6

years in Hungary• Because most of

Hungarians do not speak English (youth do)

• Nor do most of the patients

• Patient anamnese are in Hungarian

• You are obliged to take a final exam in Hungarian before entering 3rd year

• You might find it challenging and fun to learn one of the hardest languages up to a level
