PETROVARADIN FORTRESSThe Fortress is divided into Upper and Lower Town (suburbium). Petro-varadin Fortress was built based on the idea of the marquise Sebastian Voban. One of the symbols of Novi Sad, the Clock Tower, was built at the site of an old, destroyed clock by the middle of the 18th century. The diameter of the clock exceeds 2 meters, and faces are placed at all four cardinal points. It is interesting to note that hours are written in Roman figures while the hands are oriented opposite i.e. the large one shows hours and the small one shows minutes in order to see the time from the Danube even when it is foggy. The compass and weather vane with a heart on the on mast instead of a spear are placed on the top of the Tower. The City Museum of Novi Sad is another significant site at the Fortress. This is where the visitors can see two permanent exhibitions: “Petrovaradin Fortress in the past”, and “Novi Sad from the 18th to 20th century”. The guide service of the City Museum of Novi Sad organ-ises tours around the underground military galleries (tunnels) that are arranged for organised visits in the length of 800 m.
