Information PackageIFP Conference Barcelona

May 22 - 24, 2018

Why an IFP Conference? In the past few years, ICAO and Eurocontrol eventually held symposia related to PBN. Feedback from the procedure design community was that these events were quite useful, however such events addressed all stakeholders in the system. As a result, when an interesting topic for IFP experts was tabled, there was usually not enough time to discuss the issue in depth. This was the motivation to launch the IFP conference, an event specifically dedicated to the Flight Procedure Design community and any related field of expertise.

The 2017 Conference held in June 2017 in Lisbon was a great success and everybody there agreed that we need to hold this event on a regular basis. The rundown as organized at the 2017 event proved to be optimum, so we will not change that. Speakers are yet to be identified, but do not worry, it will be high quality and interesting stuff.

We deliberately do not shop for any sponsorship nor is it meant to be a commercial operation. The participation fee of 300€ per participant is only there to recover the cost of the event. This year we have about 100 seats available. The rundown is set up in a way that there is - unlike at some more general events - enough time to discuss the presented topics.

VenueThis year’s venue is the Sala Empren, part of the city owned infrastructure called Barcelona Activa. The venue address is 162 Carrer Llacuna, located very central.

There are dozens of hotels nearby to choose from.

Background and RundownNote: Coffee Breaks at L’Actiu Restaurant is included. Lunch is on expense by the individuals.

Information about the rundown:

We wanted to provide some continuity from last year. So Dr. Yoshi Nakanishi will present the evaluation of his ongoing study about the learning process of Flight Procedure Designers. As you may remember, he issued a questionnaire to the participants last year and his presentation now also includes the evaluation of them.

Then we have a section where we explain the latest developments of PBN/xLS criteria (proposed amendment for applicability in 2010). That is the part incorporating RF legs rolling out on xLS guidance, hot temperature issues, minimum required Intermediate lengths etc. We have two sessions for that, Patrice Rouquette, Avionics Engineer from Airbus will eventually be present in the room to support the discussion and to answer any questions regarding the cockpit/avionics side.

Martin Zillig will again cover the coding side of it, he requested to open up his part also to a general „coding issues“ topic, as he has some burning topics in that regard.

We will close the first day with Malte Karger, who is going to brief us on the activities of the so called OLS Task Force, a group powered by the ICAO Aerodromes Design and Operations Panel and the IFPP alike. They reviewed and revised the Annex 14 Obstacle Limitation Surfaces, a big project and significant change.

The days are always finished with a closure coffee at L’Actiu Restaurant. Included in your participation of course.

The second day we start with Thomas Mayer and the latest discussions on Instrument Approaches to Non-Instrument Runways, followed by the related topic of proposed PBN based Aerodrome Operating Minima.

Then we start focusing on the Validation/Flight Validation side of procedures. Tom Wede together with Fabrizio Maracich will trigger the discussion about the information exchange between IFP Designer and FVP to achieve efficient Validation.

Pieter-Bas Oortman provides an information about Flight Validation in the Simulator. What are the advantages, where is the SIM in a weaker position that the aircraft and how the combination of the two can be used efficiently.

Josef Anschau, hopefully together with Frank Lumnitzer will provide some examples of ambiguous behaviour of onboard systems in PBN procedures.

Finally Fabrizio Maracich will brief what we propose as amendments/improvements to 9906 vol 5 and 6.

The second day will also be ended with a closure coffee to allow some interaction.

The last day will feature Nils Lundstöm as follow up from last year, promoting the CRM testing that we currently undergo.

Then we will have some presentations about challenging procedures and solutions from Marc Torres and Ramon Solé.

Again, our planning of the day will allow for animated discussions, there will be sufficient time to get together and interact, on-topic or off-topic. I am sure, we will have another very valuable Conference.
