Cheating or plagiarism

Plagiarism appears in different forms:

e.g.

Irving Welsh’s 1993 debut novel Trainspotting illustrates the entanglement of identity affirmation

and cultural consumption particularly well. The novel evokes the life world of a group of

Edinburgh heroin users, whose diminished lives, as the title suggests, are reduced to that of passive

bystanders, as the progress promised by modern industrialization (symbolized by the train) has

long passed them by. (p. 2)

Vermeulen, Pieter. "The 1990s: Key Figures and Contexts." The Cambridge Companion

to British Fiction: 1980-2018. Cambridge UP; Cambridge, 2019. The Cambridge

Companion to British Fiction: 1980-2018; 2019. Web.

Cheating or plagiarism

Plagiarism appears in different forms:

• The literal or near-literal use of someone else’s text(s) …without indicating a citation and / or

without adequate reference to the source

• E.g.

Citation: “Irving Welsh’s 1993 debut novel Trainspotting illustrates the entanglement of identity affirmation

and cultural consumption particularly well.” (Vermeulen 2019)

Irving Welsh’s 1993 debut novel Trainspotting illustrates the entanglement of identity affirmation and cultural

consumption particularly well.

Identical tekst?

Use “quotation marks” and refer to the source, both with primary and secondary literature.

If you slightly adapt or shorten the text, signal any changes between [square brackets]. E.g. entanglement entanglement[s]

Errors in the original text should not be corrected, but pointed out by adding (sic) after any mistakes. E.g. affermation affermation (sic)

Cheating or plagiarism

Plagiarism appears in different forms:

• Copying images, diagrams, graphics, figures, sound or image fragments, etc., without adequate

reference to the source

‘Example of fistulae’ from Thesaurus of religious

objects, ed. by Perrin, p. 150. Reproduced with

permission in Baert 2013.

Want to use an image?

If necessary, ask for permission for reproduction and refer to the source.

Cheating or plagiarism

Plagiarism appears in different forms:

• Paraphrasing someone else’s arguments without adequate reference to the source

• E.g.

The novel evokes the life world of a group of Edinburgh heroin users, whose diminished lives, as the title

suggests, are reduced to that of passive bystanders, as the progress promised by modern industrialization

(symbolized by the train) has long passed them by.

Paraphrase: In the novel Trainspotting, the inhabitants of Edinburgh appear to be helpless bystanders

who watched the train, symbolizing the progress of modern industrialization, pass by. (Vermeulen 2019)

Want to communicate the same idea in your own words?

Paraphrasing is ok, but not without reference to the source.

The text must be sufficiently different from the original text.

Do not string together paraphrases without adding your own input, even if you refer to each source

correctly.

Cheating or plagiarism

Plagiarism appears in different forms:

• Translating texts without adequate reference to the source

• E.g.:

• Irving Welsh’s 1993 debut novel Trainspotting illustrates the entanglement of identity affirmation and

cultural consumption particularly well.

• Translation: Pieter Vermeulen (2019) afirma: “La novela de debut de Irving Welsh, Trainspotting, de

1993, ilustra particularmente bien el enredo entre la afirmación de identidad y el consumo cultural.”

(Vermeulen 2019, own translation)

Need to translate?

Ok, but don’t forget to cite the original author of the text and mention if a translation is your own, or

a translation that you copied somewhere.

"Place the text between quotation marks."

Cheating or plagiarism

Careful:

“Wikipedia” or “Google” are not considered to be “sources”!

You need to mention author, publication, year, ....

Search in LIMO (https://limo.libis.be/index.html)

Use the citation tool:

Page 15: Information session exams - KU Leuven · without adequate reference to the source ... o Refer to other KU Leuven services ... o Available on KU Loket on Monday 10 February (cf. e-mail)

Cheating or plagiarism

Plagiarism = fraud! Other forms of fraud:

• Commissioning or having papers revised and passing this off as one’s own work

• The re-use of one’s own work and passing it off as a new paper

• Simulating or falsifying research data

• Copying the structure and ideas of already existing work

Page 16: Information session exams - KU Leuven · without adequate reference to the source ... o Refer to other KU Leuven services ... o Available on KU Loket on Monday 10 February (cf. e-mail)

Cheating or plagiarism

The correct method:

- Step 1: Search digital libraries to explore the different dimensions of your topic.

- Step 2: Create the structure of your paper, starting from the research question and the selected

methodology.

- Step 3: Start to read carefully selected sources, taking notes while reading.

- Step 4: Make a draft version of your paper adding the correct references and quotations while

writing

- Step 5: Check! is your text an original work and no patch-work of existing material? Have you

inserted the correct references?
