Aims

• To provide students from clinical and laboratory background with a foundation in the growing field of genetic counseling.

• To help students to determine when to suspect hereditary/genetic conditions and recognize the more common inherited conditions in different clinical settings.

• To provide the theoretical foundation to students for the practice of genetic counselling and the role of genetic services in the health care delivery system.

The dissertation shall comprise:

• A project in the selected specialised field of study

• Research project of experimental or clinically-based work or a review of the existing literature on the subject of the project

• Presented in a form suitable for publication

• Minimum of 200 hours is required for the project.

Module 2: Risk Calculation & Effective Communication in Genetic Counselling

• 20 hours of teaching / interactive workshop

• Aim to equip students with communication skills specific to the setting of genetic counselling

The module consists of two parts.

• The first part consists lecture/workshop (14 hours) highlighting skills for effective communication

• Each student will have one of his/her face-to-face consultation videotaped during the clinical attachment in Module 4

• The second part of this module will be workshop sessions (6 hours) to review video clips of clinic attachment consultation completed in Module 4

Module 4: Genetics in Medicine

• 40 hrs in teaching

• Provide the knowledge for understanding normal development in pregnancy and childhood

• Plan to cover clinical aspects of counselling, from preimplantation to paediatric stages with lectures, tutorials/web-based teaching, attachment to relevant counselling clinics, and videotaping of one counselling event for reflective teaching

• Students would have an option to choose which clinics to attend. Suggest students attend a minimum of 2 hours at QMH Clinical Genetics clinic and 2 hours at TYH PDC clinic, one of which will be videotaped with student doing the counselling

• The videotaped consultation will be discussed at Module 2 (6 hours)

• Marks will be given at clinic attachment at QMH and TYH

Module 5: Public Health Genomics

• 20 hrs of teaching

• Focuses on the public health implications of advances in genetic and molecular science for preventing diseases and improving the health of the population

• Centred on an understanding how genetic and environmental factors work together in determining susceptibility to common diseases in individuals and populations.

• Include an understanding of basic public health principles and the implications of genetic knowledge and developments for public health service provision, and the ethical, legal, cultural and policy issues involved in applying genomics to public health.

Assessment for Core Modules

• In-course assessments (contribute to not more than 40%) by course tutors throughout the study period

• 2-hour written final examinations held at the end of each course i.e. normally in February and May each year

• Provisional pass mark of each core module: 40%

• Attendance: at least 80% of teaching sessions

Fees (Subject to approval)

• The composition fee for Master of Medical Sciences 2013/14 is $109,000 for full-time candidates and $54,500 p.a. for part-time candidates.

• Those who do not wish to pursue the MMedSc degree may take individual module at a rate of $5,450/Core Module or 1 unit of Specialised Module.
