1) EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN:
a) Traditional library
b) Hybrid library
c) Digital Library
d) Virtual Library
Traditional LibraryTraditionally, a library operates in a building with services provided manually.
A traditional library is characterized by the following:
emphasis on storage and preservation of physical items, particularly
books and periodicals
cataloging at a high level rather than one of detail, e.g., author and subject
indexes as opposed to full text
browsing based on physical proximity of related materials, e.g., books on
sociology are near one another on the shelves
passivity; information is physically assembled in one place; users must
travel to the library to learn what is there and make use of it
Hybrid LibraryA term invented by librarians to describe a library which contained a mixture of
traditional print resources and electronic resources.
The concept of Hybrid Library is important because it stresses that in the real
world both traditional and digital resources can and must be managed together.

Digital LibraryLibrary consisting of digital materials and services that are stored, processed and
transferred via digital devices and network.
Digital libraries can include reference material or resources accessible through
the World Wide Web.
emphasis on access to digitized materials wherever they may be located,
with digitization eliminating the need to own or store a physical item
cataloging down to individual words or glyphs
browsing based on hyperlinks, keyword, or any defined measure of
relatedness; materials on the same subject do not need to be near one
another in any physical sense
broadcast technology; users need not visit a digital library except
electronically; for them the library exists at any place they can access it,
e.g., home, school, office, or in a car
Virtual LibrariesA collection of materials from a variety of separate libraries that are organized in
virtual space using computers and computer network.
A system by which users access information that resides solely in electronic
format on computer networks, without the existance of library building which
provide the information.
A library which exists solely in electronic form or on paper.

2) HOW THIS FOUR LIBRARIES MANAGING INFORMATION USING THE IT
Any type of library is using information technologies in managing their resources
and collection. There are few IT tools, standard and technique used.
OPACAn Online Public Access Catalog (often abbreviated as OPAC or simply Library
Catalog) is an online database of materials held by a library or group of libraries.
Users search a library catalog principally to locate books and other material
physically located at a library.
OPAC is usually shared and interconnected using information technology.
DATA ENTRY ASSISTANCE BASED ON ISBNMany applications can reduce a major portion of manual data entry by populating
data fields based upon the entered ISBN using MARC standards technology via
the Internet.
BARCODE SCANNING AND PRINTINGWith most software, users can eliminate some manual entry by using a barcode
scanner. But some software is designed, or can be extended with an additional
module, to integrate scanner functionality. While most software vendors provide
some type of scanner integration, not all will print labels with barcodes.
INTEGRATED LIBRARY SYSTEMAn integrated library system (ILS), also known as a library management system
is an enterprise resource planning system for a library, used to track items
owned, orders made, bills paid, and patrons who have borrowed.

An ILS usually comprises a relational database, software to interact with that
database, and two graphical user interfaces (one for patrons, one for staff). Most
ILSes separate software functions into discrete programs called modules, each
of them integrated with a unified interface.
Examples of modules might include:
acquisitions (ordering, receiving, and invoicing materials)
cataloging (classifying and indexing materials)
circulation (lending materials to patrons and receiving them back)
serials (tracking magazine and newspaper holdings)
the OPAC (public interface for users)
Each patron and item has a unique ID in the database that allows the ILS to track
its activity.
Larger libraries use an ILS to order and acquire, receive and invoice, catalog,
circulate, track and shelve materials. Smaller libraries, such as those in private
homes or non-profit organizations (like churches or synagogues, for instance),
often forgo the expense and maintenance required to run an ILS, and instead
use a library computer system.
