Foreword

First off, I would like to thank you for your consideration and review of my talents and skills.

Most all IT professionals will profess that they demonstrate great people skills, a solid work ethic and a

cheery disposition. I however have the track record to back up these claims and more.

I have been involved in IT since 1986 and as such, I have had a front row seat to witness the

incredible growth and change in this exciting and dynamic career field. I have been fortunate to have

worked for several fortune 50 technology companies and have been on the leading edge of technology

deployment in almost all implementations of IT. I have had experience both in the trenches and in the

boardroom and I hold technical certifications as well as professional degrees. I have managed teams

that have made the companies I’ve worked for millions of dollars as well as saving the companies I’ve

worked for millions more. I’ve spearheaded the implementation of VoIP, VPN, and virtualization

technologies and have cut costs in every instance. I don’t just implement technology. I examine it, bend

it, stretch it and use it to its fullest possible benefit.

As an instructor in a public college I have taught IT professionally to hundreds of students and as

an elected local government official, I have leveraged my IT skills to save taxpayer money.

As a person skilled in IT, teaching and business I am proud of the fact that I am able to bridge the

gap between the boardroom and the data center. I am bilingual in-that I speak both business and geek.

Again, I wish to thank you for your consideration and review of my credentials. Should you have

any questions or would like to follow up, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Respectfully,

John Kowalski

CIS-120 – Introduction to Local Area Networks Description:

Knowing how to install, configure, and troubleshoot a computer network is a highly marketable

skill. This course introduces the fundamental building blocks that form a modern network, such

as protocols, topologies, hardware, and network operating systems. It provides coverage of the

most important concepts in contemporary networking, such as TCP/IP, Ethernet, wireless

transmission, and security. After completing this course you will be prepared to pass CompTIA’s

(the Computing Technology Industry Association’s) Network+ certification exam.

Course objectives

An Introduction to Networking Standards and the OSI Model Transmission Basics and

Networking Media Introduction to TCP/IP Protocols Topologies and Ethernet Standards Network

Hardware WANs and Remote Connectivity Network Operating Systems In-Depth TCP/IP

Networking Voice and Video Over IP Network Security Troubleshooting Network Problems

Ensuring Integrity and Availability Network Management

Upon conclusion of this course of study, the student will have a basic knowledge of the

operation of network hardware and software protocols within the TCP/IP suite. The student will

also learn how the various network nodes such as servers, printers and computers interconnect

and affect each other. A major part of the class is to research, design and engineer a medium

sized network upgrade solution for a fictitious company.

CIS-122 – Introduction to Wide Area Networks Description:

Participants in this course will learn the technologies used to move voice, data and video across

long distances. They will discover important new technologies such as Asynchronous Transfer

Mode (ATM) that integrate voice, data and video communications. You will learn the basic

concepts of how information is transported over a WAN from physical layer to application layer,

and how these technologies work.

Course objectives

1. Describe today’s telecommunications infrastructure.

2. Describe the relationship between telecommunications networks, cable television networks

and wide area data networks.

3. Identify and describe the technologies used for communications.

4. Define and describe in detail the lower 3 layers of the OSI model.

5. Design a WAN given various situations.

6. Describe the features of routers, switches, MUXs, CSU/DSUs and modulator/demodulators.

7. Analyze traffic data and determine bandwidth needs.

Page 27: Information technology professional portfoliocis.sc4.edu/profs/kowalski/misc/Portfolio.pdfResume ... Cisco Certified Network Associate ... Firewall engineer/administrator for over

26 | P a g e

CIS-123 – Introduction to TCP/IP Description:

The world's largest network, the Internet, is also one of the world's most powerful

communication tools. Nothing like it in the history of human endeavors compares. The Internet

communicates over a suite of protocols called the TCP/IP Suite. The Introduction to TCP/IP

course will help participants learn how to identify TCP/IP layers, components and functions.

Navigation tools, TCP/IP services and troubleshooting methodologies are also covered in this

course.

Course objectives

1. Recognize TCP/IP layers, components, and functions, and map these to the OSI model 2. Describe and implement TCP/IP application services that support electronic mail, remote

terminal access, network management, Web access, and file transport across routed networks 3. Explain TCP/IP protocols used to transport data over intranets, extranets, and the Internet 4. Identify and utilize Internet navigation and searching tools such as Web browsers (HTTP) and file

transfer services (FTP, TFTP) 5. Design and implement sub networks 6. Design and implement Classless Interdomain Routing (CIDR) 7. Choose a routing protocol based on network size and service requirements, including QoS/ToS

routing, VLSM, and link redundancy 8. Describe TCP/IP support services, including DNS and DHCP 9. Use TCP/IP tools to troubleshoot and isolate internetwork communications failures 10. Explain how TCP/IP supports converged voice and data networks (VoIP) 11. Examination of security issues within a TCP/IP network

CIS-221 – Packets and Protocols Description:

In this course we will examine the network analysis tool, Wireshark. With Wireshark we will be

able to answer questions like: How do you know your network is running at its peak? How do

you know that it’s not being attacked right now? Do you have a baseline for your network? We

will examine the bit level operation of the most common protocols on IP networks today and

learn how to detect and repair them when things go wrong.

Course objectives

1. Recognize OSI model layers, components, and functions of each layer. 2. Learn who uses network sniffers and why. 3. Learn basic networking components, their uses and where they are located in the network 4. Dissect the top 4 network protocols in use on an IP network 5. Learn the history and background of the Wireshark tool 6. Determine the best location and circumstances for deploying Wireshark 7. Install Wireshark 8. Create a myriad of filters for data collection and display 9. Provide in depth coverage of Wireless networking 10. Examine real-world packet captures

CIS-228 – Cisco Certified Network Associate Description

The CCNA Route and Switch certification validates the ability to install, configure, operate, and

troubleshoot medium-size routed and switched networks. CCNA certified professionals have the

knowledge and skills to make connections to remote sites via a WAN, and mitigate basic security

threats. CCNA Route and Switch training covers (but is not limited to) the use of these topics:

IOS, IPv6, IPv4, OSPF, RIP, Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP), Serial Line

Interfaces, Frame Relay interfaces VLANs, Ethernet, VLSM, and basic traffic filtering.
