Task 2History: What do

Pirates do? Information

Yo ho ho! A pirate is a person who travels and lives most of their life at sea. In the past, they sailed on wooden ships and each ship had a captain, first mate and a pirate crew! Pirates were known to try and steal from other ships or even the whole ship itself! Being a pirate was very dangerous and stealing was (and still is!) against the law; but people joined a crew because some thought a pirate’s life was full of adventure, lots of men thought there would be plenty of precious treasure and many thought the life was easy. Task 4 History: What was a Pirate

Ship? Information

Welcome aboard ye scurvy sea dogs! We’ll make pirates out of ye yet!

Today, we are going to learn about Pirate Ships, and what made them so sea worthy! (Not that pirates ever paid for the ships… they were mostly always stolen!)Don’t forget that they didn’t have cars or planes in the ‘Golden Age of Pirates’, and that the boats were mostly made from wood and metal. Here are the main parts of the ship:Hull: the body of the boat (the bit that sits in the water)Crow’s Nest: The highest point of the ship where crew mates would look out for other ships to plunder! (steal from)Jolly Roger: The skull and cross bones flagRigging: The ropes that hold the poles upGun ports: The holes in the ship that cannons were stuck through.Bow: The front of the shipSails: The large white pieces of material that wind blew to move the ship. The Helm (steering wheel) would steer it.

Task 5 D&T: What was a pirate ship made from?

Information

Now then me hearties! You’re getting closer to becoming a proper pirate now!

Today we want you to think about how you would build your very own pirate ship! And most importantly… what from? The pirate ships of old were made from watertight wood nailed together with metal nails, wooden masts and linen sails! Now shipyards aren’t aplenty around Sheffield. So, we want you to think of some materials you would build your ship from! And why!(Material is the different things you use to build with, each material is better for some things…you wouldn’t use fabric to build the hull of the boat!)

Task 6 PSHE: What’s your pirate code?

Information

Now you’ve built your ship lads and lassies it’s time to think how these boats were run!On board a Pirate’s ship they had some special rules. These were called the ‘Pirates Code’. These rules were made by the Captain, and if anyone broke the rules they might have to clean the poop deck (the floor) or if they really annoyed the captain, they’d walk the plank! Why do you think the pirates had rules? Was it to show the crew who’s boss? Or to make sure everyone was doing as they were told?

TaskWe want you to think of why it’s important to have a code or ‘agreements’ (Like we do in our classroom!)

We’d like you to make a pirate code for your ship, to make

Ye have your hat, ship and pirate code! Now it’s time to gather your treasure, or booty as us pirates like to call it!Pirates gathered their treasure through stealing from trade ships taking things to other countries to sell. Treasure might not just have been gold and jewels though. Such things as silk and other expensive fabrics, spices, tea and fruit were seen as very valuable in the past. Pirates also collected objects that meant a lot to them, such as shells from beaches they had been on, animals and clothes!Let’s have a think of what is valuable now, to you? Task 9Geography: How did pirates read a map?

Information

Now ye have ye treasure… it’s time to bury it on a desert island so no other scurvy sea dog can get it!

Pirates may have used maps to remind themselves of where their buried treasure was, with an X to mark the spot! They used compasses to tell them which direction to go, north, east, west or south! We still use maps today to help us find out ways to get to a place we need to go. (We’ve used them before on our Halloween woodland walk!).Maps have special symbols called ‘keys’ that help the reader know what to look for on the map and on their journey! For example, a rock might be on the key if there is rocks to look out for on your journey. Maps are drawn in a ‘birds eye view’ as through we are birds looking down on the land… it’s easier to see what direction to go in then!

Page 22: Information …  · Web viewNow ye have ye treasure… it’s time to bury it on a desert island so no other scurvy sea dog can get it! Pirates may have used maps to remind themselves

island have?

Information

Land ahoy! I can see an island! What treasure be waiting for us?Desert islands are an important (and very beautiful) part of our world! There’s no wonder pirates liked them so much!Today we are going to be learning about the key features of a desert and island, and what makes it what it is!Islands are little pieces of land in the sea, they can be close or far away from other, bigger pieces of land. They tend to have vegetation (we know what that means from our Stomping Through the Ages topic!) sand, rocks and can be flat or have tall part!

Task 18Geography: What is a flag?

Information

Welcome to the crew and hoist the flag lads and lassies! You’re a proper pirate now!Flags were very important to pirates as they showed who they were, and wanted to make other ship scared of them. Some pirates had their very own flag (like Blackbeard!) so people knew who it was!Pirates aren’t the only one who use flags. The Countries that pirates would visit used flags too,
