Be CLEAR

•Definitions your audience needs to know•Make distinctions about what it is and

what it is not.•Compare and contrast to things your

audience probably already knows.

Be CONCISE

•Choose words carefully▫Please repeat that again.▫These two are both alike.▫The pens are identically the same.▫She arrived at 8am this morning.

•Don’t waste words!

Be COMPLETE

•Use advance organizers▫Tell us where you’re taking us in your

speech.

▫What are some words you can use?

For example, “There are three things you need to know about…” and keep it to three things. Don’t add a fourth or fifth.

Be CORRECT

•We’re trusting you to be the expert.•If you don’t know for sure, don’t say it.• Identify sources correctly.•Give credit where credit is due.

Be CONCRETE

•Give us specifics.•Not just candy…gourmet jelly beans, • rich, dark chocolate. •Help us make mental pictures.•Provide physical details.

CONNECT

•Analyze your audience•What are the demographics?•What will they know about your topic

already?•What level of cultural literacy will you be

dealing with?

Narrow down your subject

•Limit your subject in time.•Limit your subject in space.•Limit your subject in extent.•Now divide it in half.
