ENERGY CONSERVATION PROJECTS IMPLEMENTED

• Central Air-Conditioning Plant with automation controls and monitoring to

meet out the high energy efficiency standards. The central plant also

provides us a good amount of diversity in operation.

• Re-commissioned all the AHUs, VFDs, and Actuators & Sensors.

• Replacing Air cooled VRVs (Dx units) with Centralized Air conditioning.

ECM 1 – Central Air-conditioning plant with automation controls and monitoring to meet out the energy efficiency standards

As a part of energy saving initiative, company have converted the air cooled chiller

into water cooled chiller by connecting the pipe line from centralized water cooled

chiller plants to SDB with necessary valves. This has helped building to minimize

the high power required to run the chillers. The water cooled chiller’s efficiency is

about 0.6 KW/TR whereas the air cooled chiller efficiency is 1.65 KW/TR.

ECM 2 - Re-commissioned all the AHUs, VFDs, Actuators & Sensors

Building has replaced the conventional valves with PIBCV valves which will modulate

on the basis AHU’s of supply air temperature. The chiller would be utilized at

optimum level when the PIBCV valve is modulated which triggers the reduction in

energy consumption in the centralized chiller plant. These valves basically regulate

the chilled water flow to the required load condition based on the occupation.

Page 3: INFOSYS LIMITED SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT BLOCK-2 · INFOSYS LIMITED SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT BLOCK-2 Chengalpet (Tamil Nadu) Unit Profile Infosys is a global leader in consulting, technology,

The AHU’s return air sensor has been replaced with advanced one which will

modulate the VFD operation. The energy consumption of AHU’s motor and as well as

chiller would get reduced considerably with the help of VFD modulation.

ECM 3 - Replacing Air cooled VRVs with Centralized Air conditioning

Building has switched off the air cooled VRV indoor AC units which are connected to

floor cabins and meeting rooms and the same has been extended through duct from

centralized water cooled AHU. This has resulted in reducing the inefficiency in terms

of using conventional Dx units.

The energy consumption has been reduced from 1.2 kW/TR with VRV air cooled AC

operation to 0.6 kW/TR with the help of centralized plant AHU.

NORTHERN RAILWAY, LUCKNOW DIVISION

Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh)

Unit Profile

Lucknow Division, formerly part of Oudh Rohilkhand Railway up to 1925, and later

part of East Indian Railway from 1925 to 1952, caters to rail transport requirement

of the most populous state of the country, serving 14 districts of Uttar Pradesh with

a total route network of 1460.12 Kms.

This Division is predominating passenger services oriented with about 398

passenger-carrying trains. The Division provides vital link between Eastern and

Northern States for freight & passenger traffic. The important stations e.g.

Lucknow, Varanasi, Faizabad, Ayodhay, Prayag, Pratapgarh, Sultanpur & Raebareli

are part of this division. The DRM office, Lucknow is the main administrative &

control building for entire train operation, planning and execution. The building is

centrally located in Hazaratganj the heart of Lucknow City.

In recent past, the need to upgrade infrastructure of Divisional system has been also

addressed. Notwithstanding the constraints, deficiencies and shortcomings in the

system, Lucknow Division has continually made major strides to achieve higher level

of performance in all areas.

the ECMs have been implemented. Below are the major re-engineered areas in the

aspect of our building energy efficiency & environmental quality enhancement

program

• Operational optimization at chiller plant – Best operational methods implemented

to achieve the maximum efficiency with minimum energy.

• Building Lighting system - Replaced the existing entire lighting fixtures with LED

fixtures for lux level enhancement and energy conservation

• Converted conventional UPS with modular UPS.

• Re-commissioning of AHU VFDS, ACTUATORS AND SENSORS

• Converted all DX units into Chilled water split units

Best operational practices implemented in B4

ECM 1 – Operational optimization at chiller plant

The following are the new activities have been adapted in central air-conditioning plant:

Operational optimization at chiller plant

1. VFD’s operational settings redefined with respect to Chiller operation:

Based on recorded operational pattern company found that Condenser and chilled

water pumps were operating in a uniform pattern and the necessary modulations

were not happening properly as per low side load variations. VFD was introduced

with appropriate settings done to meet out the highest efficiency of the chiller and

its accessories with proper modulations on the flow pattern.

2. Cooling towers efficiency improvement:

Based on the evaluation company found that the existing cooling towers

effectiveness was 28-36%. It was decided to go with new cooling towers of 3 x 500

TR Capacity in terms of latest construction model with 58.8% effectiveness to

improve the plant efficiency.

3. Chiller:

Chillers are the highest energy consuming equipments in air conditioning systems.

With the help of detailed study, the new Chiller selection was done for 6.4 COP from

the earlier levels of 3.6-4 COP. The Chiller alone improves the efficiency by 38%.

4. Auto tube cleaning System:

Company has installed auto tube cleaning system (ATCS) on condenser line of the

new Chiller to eliminate the scales accumulation. ATCS will help to remove the soft

scales at regular intervals before it become hard scale formation in tubes.

5. Plant manager:

The objective of Chiller plant manager (CPM) for existing Chiller plants is to integrate

all the plant equipment, incorporation of automated energy saving algorithms to

reduce consumption, eliminate wastage and improve Chiller plant overall efficiency.

CPM will also provide a lot of real time and historical energy and efficiency data to

manage the Chiller plant consumption effectively.

ECM 2 - Replaced the existing entire lighting fixtures with LED fixtures for lux level enhancement and energy conservation

The main objective of this retrofit is to enhance the lux level of the present lighting

system to meet the IEQ (Indoor Environmental Quality) standards without any

further increase in connected load. A detailed study had been conducted on campus

lighting system and the actual lux levels of various work stations are mapped. Based

on the study outcome, the right LED lighting fixtures had been selected. The savings

is as follows.

ECM 3 – Replaced conventional UPS with Energy Efficient modular UPS

In conventional design UPS system use to design for backup of the computers/IT

equipment during power failure or power change overs with several UPS units in

parallel mode or hot standby arrangement based on the redundancy requirements.

With the conventional design if you need 2 UPS units to back up the critical load the

3rd UPS would be required to create a redundancy (N+1 configuration).

In addition the UPS units use to design considering the old technology computers

which had an operating load of 200 to 250 Watts per computer. Over years of

technology change & push towards energy efficiency the computers became very

efficient by 2x (100–125 Watts per computer). However UPS units are not being

looked at, hence, they have become power consuming devices instead of backup

units.

Under these conditions UPS systems are under loaded and overall efficiency of UPS

is also very low in part loads. To overcome this challenge and to reduce energy

consumption, campus started regrouping the UPS system capacity and design with

latest technology of modular UPS system. Where the entire unit works as a single

backup source with multiple smaller capacity UPS modules connected in parallel.

Because of inbuilt modular design of the unit campus can reduce the installed

capacity up to 40%. Also campus can increase the loading on the entire UPS system

all the time as the system has in built intelligence to operate only the required

number of modules based on load. The modular UPS not only helps in reducing the

total installed capacity but also help to increase the load based on increase in

business requirement.

Campus has achieved a 20% reduction in UPS connected. The new modular UPS

systems have 93% efficiency, compared to the older 78% efficiency systems. About

210 kW Modular UPS are connected. The reduction in SDB 5 UPS systems energy

consumption as follows,

The entire HVAC system had been re-commissioned to achieve high level of energy

efficiency. The below mentioned savings had been realized in SDB 4
